Lowe's is Closing Stores -- Can it Keep Up With Home Depot? - Duration: 5:44.
Hill: Let's move on to Lowe's.
Lowe's third quarter not nearly as good as Home Depot's last week.
Expectedly, shares of Lowe's falling today.
Part of the confidence that I think investors might want to have in Target is the fact that
despite the higher costs in the third quarter, Target didn't change their guidance for the
full fiscal year. That is not the case with Lowe's.
In addition to their third quarter numbers, they also cut their forecast.
Barker: As we just went over, part of the equation here traditionally would be that you
have good comp numbers, which allows you to open more stores.
Well, Lowe's is now in the process of closing stores. They're saying 31 stores in Canada, 20 in the U.S.
They're contracting, in terms of their store count. Where is the growth going to come from there?
I'm not saying that's the wrong business decision.
If you have over-supplied in terms of stores, you've got too many too close together --
I think most of the stores that they've announced that are going to be eliminated are within
ten miles of another store. They're going to be more efficient.
That'll help the comp numbers in the remaining stores once it's completed.
But you've got to take a big charge to earnings to close those stores.
That's what's befalling Lowe's stock today.
Hill: And, throw in the fact that previously, Lowe's had announced that it was closing all of its
Orchard Supply Hardware stores, which was a smaller brand in the Lowe's portfolio.
This can all make a lot of sense, and these can all be the right decisions, but if you're
looking at Lowe's in 2019, 2019 is shaping up as a year for Marvin Ellison and his team
at Lowe's where they really need to deliver.
If this year has been, "We need to take a hard look at how we manage our inventory.
We need to take a hard look at our locations. Yes, we're going to close Orchard Supply.
Yes, we're going to methodically close certain locations in North America," that's fine.
But they really need to deliver next year.
Barker: Yeah.
You can be more confident in that delivery occurring if the housing market is really healthy.
And the housing market is beginning to show signs, in the wake of interest rates moving up
and mortgage rates also moving up, of a softening in the housing market.
All these markets are really local, and some are doing better than others.
But nationally, there's been slowdown.
The numbers out yesterday showed that homebuilder confidence was at a two-year low.
That's an issue. Margins are also an issue.
The cost of lumber has been going up, in large part due to some of the tariffs,
and the lumber coming in from Canada.
There are a lot of different moving pieces, all of which are moving in the wrong direction for Lowe's,
other than the economy in general, which is still quite healthy.
That's more use than maybe just about anything, but the housing economy specifically is a problem.
Hill: If housing is really that bad -- Barker: I don't want to say housing is bad.
It's softening. It's different. I don't want to oversell the problems in the housing market.
Hill: I appreciate that.
But we've talked for years about how, for people who have not invested in housing, one
of the easiest entry points for an investor looking at individual stocks is Home Depot and Lowe's.
Over time, they've been steady businesses. At various points, one has done better than the other.
But generally, they have been seen as safer investments than a straight-up homebuilder
or that sort of thing.
Sorry to keep going back to last week, but if Home Depot is going to put up a third quarter like
they just did, and the stock is going to drop because there are all of these concerns
about the housing industry, that makes me wonder if there's anything related to the
housing market, in terms of stocks, that's worth buying right now.
Barker: I think Home Depot is still -- disclosure, I own some shares of Home Depot --
probably the place I would be most confident in a sustainable floor, that is housing builders, homebuilders.
Boy, you get some wild, wild swings there. When times are good, they skyrocket.
When times are bad, they look like they're going bankrupt.
Home Depot is a far lower ceiling, higher floor on that, and it's been doing a better job
than Lowe's for quite some time.
Although there was, as you say, weakness post-earnings-report,
I'd rather have a good earnings report and stock weakness than vice versa.

It is a very gray and rainy day outside,
so having a cup of tea is incredibly comforting.
And this is our first 'Tea-time Tuesday' segment in the new studio.
Finding happiness is something I was hoping we could chat about today
and I know that it's an incredibly difficult topic to cover because every person is so individual
when it comes to how they feel happy and what makes them happy.
And, the topic of happiness: I feel like it's been tackled by philosophers since the dawn of man
and there seems to be kind of no trivial answer when we are looking at how people can become more happy.
But when we look at something like social media or commercials, they make it seem like it's not even a question at all.
They give us the impression that, you know, if you buy a certain thing or if you look a certain way,
then you'll become happy.
They make it seem like happiness is conditional.
If you do this, then you'll be happy.
By now I think we've all learned, from one source or another, that social media is heavily curated.
We selectively, and very carefully, choose what we share with the world.
The content that I share is very much included in all of that.
So for example, I share with you meals that I authentically eat at home.
But I plate it in a way that I wouldn't normally do if I was eating it alone at home. Cause I grab some
artsy-looking bowls. I place it on a backdrop with some accent pieces that color complement the food.
I make things look a little bit messy.
I add garnishes to make it look really pretty.
And, I do all of that because it's an art form for me,
but I think it gives people the impression that, that's what my food looks like all the time. But it's not!
It's the whole expectation vs reality bit.
And the same thing happens when we are scrolling through social media
and we see these people who look like they're living exceptionally happy lives.
And we start to think to ourselves, "Maybe if I do what they're doing,
then I'll also be happy.
Maybe if I travel more, then I'll be happy.
If I buy that outfit,
that makeup, that jewelry, then I'll be happy."
"Maybe I don't have time for that, because I'm studying, but if and when I graduate then I'll be happy."
It's this game we're constantly playing and it's a game we're never winning.
And it's the If... then game. "If I get fit, then I'll be happy."
"If I find a loving and supportive partner, then I'll be happy."
If... then. If... then. If... then.
And it's a very toxic way of thinking.
And, I think it's toxic for a couple of reasons.
For one: it makes us feel like happiness is something that only comes later and as a result of something.
But, that is definitely not the case!
Happiness is something we can all tap into at any moment.
And the second reason it's toxic:
let's say we do that thing; we go travel,
we graduate, we buy that jewelry, we get fit, we have that partner.
Then what?
Cause from my experience, it's always something else.
The bar keeps getting set higher and higher, and happiness seems to be this thing that is forever out of reach.
And, that's how a lot of us can end up feeling like we're stuck in a rut.
So what can we do about it?
I think there are three things we can do.
For one: catch that thinking dead in its tracks. If you notice yourself doing the If... then thinking,
remind yourself that it's important to have aspirations and dreams and desires,
but achieving those things alone will not make you happy.
Other things can also bring about happiness!
Number two: in that exact moment when you notice yourself doing the If... then thinking
try to shift your mindset and, one way to do that is to just stop, look around you, and start saying "thank you."
"thank you, thank you, thank you."
for everything thats around you.
Maybe you live in a certain home,
or you're surrounded by certain people, you live in a certain country.
There is things to be thankful for.
I think that when we do the If... then thinking, we are focusing on the things that we lack.
But when we say "thank you," we are grateful for the things that we have.
And, so you might want to travel really badly, but we live in a country where a lot of people come to as tourists.
Is there a way that maybe you can be a tourist in your own country?
It's just about shifting the mindset a little bit.
We might not have graduated yet, but we have the ability to get an education.
We have the ability to advance our knowledge.
We might not have a partner, but maybe we have supportive friends or family.
The point of this is to focus on the things that we have instead of the things that we lack.
And number three:
I think it's really important to also mention, that it's okay to not be in the state of happiness all the time,
contrary to what social media makes you believe.
That's just being human! And, I think that's sometimes the flaw of some of the self-improvement movement.
It makes us feel like if we're not stronger, happier, faster, better versions of our former selves then we've failed in some way.
We feel guilty for feeling the ups and downs of life, but that's just characteristic to being human.
We need the ups and downs and hardships to learn and grow.
And those down moments help us appreciate the up moments so much more!
So if I can summarize: happiness is this very difficult and complex topic to explore but it's the state of emotion that we are all constantly striving to achieve.
And, I think one important way that we can do that is to be grateful for the things that we have instead of focusing on the things that we lack.
So trying to minimize that if... then thinking whenever we can,
and to realize that it's only human to feel down sometimes
and to not, kind of feel, guilty for feeling that way.
And, also, before I sign off, there is one more thing
I've been wanting to mention for a while now.

Americans have one serious question about the Robert Mueller investigation.
How did the FBI's probe into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia begin?
Now the real truth about the Mueller investigation is even more awful than anyone thought.
There has been a shifting origin story Deep State leakers planted in the press.
In April 2017, the New York Times published a story about how Carter Page's summer 2016
trip to Moscow is what tipped the FBI about suspicious contacts between Trump campaign
aides and Russians.
There was just one big problem with that story.
This trip was a focal point of the Christopher Steele dossier.
When it was revealed that the dossier was paid for by Hillary Clinton, the New York
Times then ran a story in December stating that the true beginning of the counterintelligence
investigation was when the Australian government passed along information to the FBI that Trump
foreign policy team member George Papadopoulos had discussed being offered information about
the Russians having Hillary Clinton's emails with one of their diplomats.
Now Americans are wondering if this is the truth in the wake of bombshell revelations
that the Obama administration sicced a spy on the Trump campaign.
The spy – allegedly Cambridge Professor Stefan Halper – approached three Trump aides
and tried to weasel his way into their good graces to earn a position on the campaign.
In light of the idea that a Democratic administration weaponized spies against the Republican nominee,
Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani declared on CNN that he no longer saw the Mueller investigation
as legitimate.
CNN reports:
"GIULIANI ALSO SUGGESTED THAT THE START OF THE MUELLER PROBE WAS ILLEGITIMATE, CITING
FIRED FBI DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY'S LEAKED MEMOS AND A LACK OF EVIDENCE OF COLLUSION
BETWEEN TRUMP AND RUSSIA.
"(Y)OU GET THE COMEY THING, WHICH IS THE LEAK OF A CONFIDENTIAL MEMO, WHICH IS ILLEGAL
FOR AN FBI OFFICIAL TO DO.
I'M NOT SAYING MUELLER IS ILLEGITIMATE.
I'M SAYING THE BASIS ON WHICH HE WAS APPOINTED WAS ILLEGITIMATE," GIULIANI REMARKED.
ASKED WHETHER THE MUELLER PROBE WAS LEGITIMATE NOW, GIULIANI SAID, "NOT ANYMORE," CITING
REPORTS OF AN FBI INFORMANT WITHIN THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN AS ONE OF THE REASONS FOR ITS DISCREDITING."
The media went into overdrive to try and spin the idea that the Obama administration deploying
a spy to snoop around the Trump campaign was a perfectly normal use of a "confidential
human informant."
But neither the FBI nor the Department of Justice will release the documents surrounding
the spy's covert activities.
Both agencies have consistently stonewalled Congresses oversight attempts and refuse to
make public the intelligence that led to the FBI launching the investigation into the Trump
campaign.
Critics contend this cover-up is taking place because the investigation – as Giuliani
stated – is illegitimate.
