in the left corner we have a 1987 Toyota Corolla and in the right corner a 20??
Tesla Model X and accompanying me here is Bobby
so today's episode takes place in beautiful Vancouver British Columbia
well Richmond to be exact and for anyone who's not from there
here's a quick fact there's a lot of Chinese people there, many new mainland
Chinese and with their newfound money they purchase lots of investment homes
often with no one living in them a few of which I've actually had the luxury of
couchsurfing, this of course drives real-estate prices through the roof and
there are tensions as many Vancouverites including Canadian Asians that feel
Vancouver has become too expensive to live even though it continuously shows
up at the top of several best cities to live in the world risks, tensions aside
the bottom line is there's a lot of money and the Tesla Model X is a dime in
a dozen and funny enough the powerful Tesla Model X is the
favorite vehicle of choice for wealthy Chinese moms in Richmond
and on the other end of the spectrum the Rocky Mountains and the great outdoors
attract many climbing and snow sport enthusiasts to Vancouver, Squamish,
Whistler, the BC Interior, and beyond, I'm particularly familiar with Squamish as I
try to climb there whenever I'm there, you see the mild weather attracts
several vanlifers and it's pretty common to have RVs on the street right
next to the QQ monster trucks and like Chris McCandless these dirtbags are out
there on the fringes of society doing what they love while scrounging by, so
I'm joined today by my friend who lives between Shanghai and Vancouver and who
happens to be in the know about all things mainland Chinese, ok so let's
figure out this Tesla, so no that's neutral. What are you doing? I'm not used to driving
with the camera, man. let's talk about this car first
accelerates fast. that's the thing that's the thing you're gonna learn when
you start driving electric cars is that like it's a different way of driving you
you hardly ever use the brakes, yes you notice that you just hit the brake here so it
uses almost no brakes right
notice that I left the window open. no one's gonna break in and it
keeps the car airy, cuz it's kind of old and doesn't smell so bad. I guess someone
broke in before, this is my favorite this is how old school it gets, so to lock the
door so you don't lock yourself out, you gotta do it like this and you gotta hold
hold the handle up to lock it otherwise it'll pop up watch so if I
pop this down it'll pop back up see and it doesn't lock so this is an old-school
way to keep your car, this is the old school way to keep you from locking
yourself out. how many are there in Van? I've seen about three
or four. You've only seen three or four?
I can't tell they're all white ones, yeah everybody bought a white one yeah that's
exactly what happened the white pearl option it looked really nice online it
looks pretty nice in real life and it also was one of more expensive paint
jobs right, people want to flash it they want to show off so
basically everybody that bought the Tesla , like the first round. You get tax breaks?
Not in Canada, you're supposed to go like 11 grand off but it hasn't applied to
luxury cars, in China we've got a good deal in China when we bought ours
because of Trump, he lowered the import tax in China
let's check the interior. Window looks cracked but that's not too bad
considering and only happened in the past year or two. this I'm surprised the
transmission hasn't blown as my dad used to own a newer corolla, he had a 91 corolla and
the transmission blew after a few years, it's got a special button
you pull your key out then the lights kind of stay on unless you press
this button but I think this is supposed to keep your key locked in but it's not
really holding pretty well anymore, this old school dash - I like this little tray thing
here it actually holds a phone perfectly so as you can see old school becomes
useful for the new generation if anyone's got a car like this one, okay it's
getting hot in here ,so I gotta start running the car. but if you take the shinkansen in japan
it's incredibly clean super quiet no cell phones
you take it for 4 hours and your sleep. it is like incredibly relaxing and then you
take you know a gaotie which is a shinkanesen for China, a bullet
train, it was about two years ago, brand-new train already like fall apart
water everywhere on the floor, bathrooms are filthy, people are on their iPads full
volume watching whatever drama they're watching and it's like a
madhouse and I'm like, what can you do? you tell this guy to quiet down there's
a hundred people on the car doing the same thing. headlights kind of stopped working so they kind of
have to go on high beams but honestly the high beams aren't intense it's
at two hundred and fifty seven four four seven kilometers not miles so actually
it's not pretty high by... its high but not high for its age, for you
Millennials who don't know what this is , I'll demonstrate, this is how windows go down
and up okay so this time I'm accompanied by Bobby.
Bobby you gonna come in the video? so one thing I'm surprised that is this car still has its
power steering it's not as strong as it used to be or
maybe it wasn't so strong as it was, accelerates pretty slowly and I can't
drive faster than 50 kilometers an hour, it just doesn't feel like it wants to go, I
probably don't want to make left turns in this car cause it accelerates
so slowly. Here in Richmond everything is close, you
don't really need to drive it anywhere else like
already I'm driving out and already passed a supermarket, good dim sum
places , Chinese restaurants in Richmond, how are you doing Bobby?
have you taken like a Chinese airline? did you get the message, like the People's Republic
of China does not take kindly to violence on the on the plane, if you are
found to be in a physical altercation, we will prosecute you to the full extent of the law
did you hear that? no. It does happen. they
have it in Chinese and in English and it's only in a Chinese
flight you will get that, maybe it's only when you take it in China or to China
you get this because there was all these incidences like a couple of years ago,
yeah hit it man, and yeah like all these grandmas were fighting and kicking,
you can see a video of a girl doing a jump kick, she'll kick yeah like over
the seats like it's Street Fighter, I don't know how it sounds for you guys but it's fairly loud
but not deafening
like I said I looked under the car, the pipe above the muffler before the cat so
it's not spewing toxic fumes, the pipe has a hole in it
so one of my pet peeves about driving in Vancouver, traffic's not bad it's a lot of stop and go
not really any highways, but there aren't too
many left turn lanes especially on where you really need it like
heading downtown, this might be one of the crappiest cars in Richmond right now so
today it definitely is, I haven't seen much
worse. Vancouver weather is nice and there's no winter therefore no salt on
the roads cars last longer and secondhand cars
have a higher value. that was crazy I accelerate so fast but I came to this
stop light, you just hit full power once it's green
I didn't step on the brakes and it was just like -again, this is a car that's like
a size of a light tank terms of weight right, this is like a French light tank
and drives like a Porsche.
Hit it! Woah! And then you slow down. This is not Germany.
