2018 Audi A5 2.0T Coupe Automatic - Duration: 12:49.
2018 Audi A5 2.0T Coupe Automatic
Stealthy speeder.
The if-it-ain't-broke approach to fixing things apparently translates well into German because you have to squint your eyes to see how Audi has altered the A5 with this new-for-2018 redesign.
Wheelbase and overall length are a touch longer, while height is the same and width is down by a mere 0.3 inch.
The grille, headlamps, and taillamps all have broader proportions, and those zeppelin-like creases in the hood are apparently how Audi's metal benders earn their pay.
The clamshell hood is a lovely touch, and we're also fond of the subtle upward and outward sweep of the rear fender creases. If your lifestyle hungers for low-key elegance, this A5 delivers. Going Deeper. The best stuff is inside.
While the turbocharged, intercooled, and direct-injected 20-liter inline-four carries over its iron block and longitudinal orientation, there are worthwhile gains in both power (up from 220 to 252 horsepower) and torque (which increases from 258 to 273 lb-ft).
As before, Quattro all-wheel drive is standard, and buyers may choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with three operating modes and paddle shifters.
Audi claims the new multilink front suspension improves steering precision and that weight has been methodically trimmed throughout the car.
Dropping one gear from the automatic transmission, adopting new aluminum front-suspension components, and other measures yielded a 65-pound weight savings over a similarly equipped .
This 2018 edition has Quattro all-wheel drive, a huge sunroof, three-zone automatic climate control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard equipment. Interestingly, Audi charges the same $43,775 base price for both manual and automatic versions.
Our two-pedal test car was a Premium Plus model, which is a $3000 step up from the base Prestige (adding heated 10-way adjustable front seats, LED headlights, heated exterior mirrors, satellite radio, audio-visual parking aids, and other equipment).
It was outfitted with a $2600 navigation package (which includes Audi's Virtual Cockpit electronic instrument cluster), a $1250 S line Sport package (front sport seats with four-way lumbar adjustments, sport suspension, and a few décor items), a $950 Bang & Olufsen audio system, an $800 19-inch wheel and low-profile summer-tire package, and Florett Silver Metallic paint costing an extra $575.
The full $52,950 tab is less than you'd spend for a Ford Mustang Shelby GT350.
The indulgent option load didn't hamper the new A5 at the test track.
Its combination of lighter weight, more power, and greater torque multiplication in the first three gears clipped more than a second from both the 6.1-second zero-to-60-mph acceleration and the 14.7-second quarter-mile elapsed time we measured for the aforementioned 2016 A5.
In fact, this A5's 50-second-flat rush to 60 beats every 20-liter-turbo direct competitor we've clocked—a BMW 428i, a Cadillac ATS 20T, a Mercedes-Benz C300, and a Lexus RC200t—plus a few notable six-cylinder rivals—a BMW 435i, a Cadillac ATS 3.6, a 3.6-liter Chevy Camaro, and a Ford Mustang packing 3.7 liters.
Chalk it up not so much to the A5's 252 horsepower but to the dual-clutch automatic's quick handoffs during upshifts and the Quattro driveline that squanders not one iota of energy on wheelspin.
(The listed competitors all were rear-drive, and three were equipped with manual transmissions.).
Proving it's no one-trick pony, the new A5 excelled in other track tests. The Continental ContiSportContact 5P radials hung tight on the skidpad to the tune of 0.93 g, topping the field by 001 to 005 g.
Fade-free stopping from 70 mph in 152 feet bested BMW's 428i by 12 feet and the Lexus RC by 19. Its 76-decibel noise level during flat-out acceleration is quieter than Cadillac's ATS coupe by three to seven decibels. Real-World Ability.
What's more impressive is how the A5 blends its dynamic skills with a thoughtfully configured cabin to deliver impressive back-road strafing ability.
You're well restrained by a laterally firm seat, properly supported from shoulder to knee, and hanging onto a perfectly contoured and leather-clad three-spoke wheel.
If you're tardy clicking the plastic upshift paddle, the transmission delivers a crisp upshift at the 6750-rpm redline.
The brake pedal goes to work at the top of its swing and is calibrated to deliver predictable stopping force for each incremental increase in pressure. Body roll is tightly constrained, yet the wheels never go stiff-legged over bumps and swells.
When you crowd the adhesion limit, the front tires let you know what's up with a soft moan. Dial in more steering lock and the rears begin drifting wide half a step after the fronts.
Quick, well-weighted steering offering hints of what's going on at the pavement helps nail your desired line.
But the S line Sport package and the 19-inch wheels with summer tires—options totaling $2050—are essential if you're serious about exploiting all of this coupe's agility.
That investment also empowers the A5's street-stealth mode. You can bomb around town expeditiously because the engine is quiet at work, the tires never shriek, and body roll is so tightly contained.
While some sports coupes are a spectacle even at modest velocities, this silver bullet vectors through traffic like an unmarked patrol car.
Thanks to its yawning trunk space and split-folding rear seatbacks, the A5 is a fine weekend warrior; cargo up to six feet in length lies flat.
And although its roofline suggests otherwise, this coupe will accommodate four adults on date night. High-mounted switches on the front bucket seats release the backrests and power the front seats to their forward stops.
Squeezing through the entry crevice requires a yogi's flexibility, but the griping quickly subsides when rear passengers discover all the head-, leg-, and elbow room at their disposal.
The bottom cushions are contoured for comfort and raised high enough that knees aren't jammed into chins. Claustrophobia isn't a concern due to the svelte pillars and large expanses of side glass.
Unfortunately, the gap between front and rear center consoles is so tight that if a rear occupant wishes to change sides, they're better off exiting the A5 and repeating the entry rigmarole via the opposite door.
While panel gaps and overall interior quality were flawless in our test car, in terms of design, this A5 is more a placeholder than a great stride forward rivaling those Audi has achieved in the past.
Some staff members felt the matte-black leather and plastic surfaces accented by strategic bits of polished, knurled, or etched metal lacked warmth.
To appease those who feel the contempo-tech look doesn't jibe with the $50,000-plus price, the A5's options list includes three alternative leather hues and walnut or oak paneling in place of the etched aluminum.
At least every paddle, switch, and control knob is well placed and works in an intuitive manner. The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is reconfigurable to accommodate crystal-clear instruments and navigation displays.
The 70-inch center screen that begs to be touched is in fact commanded quite nicely by a large, console-mounted rotary knob with a couple of switches on the steering wheel to help with audio adjustments.
It's a shame this A5 isn't more of an extrovert because its class-leading performance warrants a serious look from anyone shopping premium coupes.
At least Audi is nurturing the A5 family with and editions, plus due next year to backstop the currently available. Clearly, those growing up and out of rowdy V-8 coupes have never had it so good.

The Secret To Being The Best Performer - Duration: 3:48.
It's so common as a performer to judge
the success of your shows on two things,
1: the amount of people in the room, and
2: what those people are doing. As a
performer, it's common to step up there
onto the stage and to give what you're
receiving, and by that I mean, if the
crowd is into it, you will get into it
and there will be this perpetual growth
of excitement in the room, but if the
crowd is not into it, if the crowd is
standing there, having a drink, maybe
chatting to one another, you'll feed off
that room energy and you're not going to
give it back, therefore you'll step
offstage and you'll think to yourself
this show was not a good show.
This mentality is based on an underlying
principle that as a performer, or an
artist, you are there to receive, in fact
your whole career is about receiving.
What can I get out of this industry? What
can I get out of the world? I'm going to
put my art out there so that I can
receive. What can I get? Where's my money?
Where's my label deal? Where's my team
that want to join me? Where are the
crowds that are going to jump on board?
Show me all those likes. Give me them
follows. It's all about that. But today I
want to flip that model of success on
its head because I truly don't believe
that great musicians, musicians that last
the long haul, musicians that go
the distance, I truly believe that they
have the opposite mentality, and that is
that as a performer you get out there to
give. As an artist you write to give to
people. You are actually the creator of
gifts. People love music, that's why we're
all in this. You write to give. You
perform to entertain. You don't perform
to receive accolades or affection or
love. You perform to give love. You perform
to entertain. That's what it's all about.
Because you see, if you can adopt this
mentality, and this is the greatest point,
this is just an outcome of this
mentality. If you can perform
and write and be an artist to give rather than
to gain or to get or to receive, then as
far as performance goes, you'll be the
best performer that you can be, because
the performance starts with you. If you
go to a crowd, if you go to a performance
and base your performance on receiving
what the crowds giving you, it will
forever be dictated by the room, but if
you can start with a giving mentality, it
starts in the mind, it starts in the heart,
that's my desire, to give not to receive.
If you can take to the stage with that
mentality, your performance will be the
same that it is for one person as it is
for a thousand people as it is for
10,000 people because like I said before,
the room won't dictate the performance
and in fact you will. And it will be out
of a better heart as well. So flip that
model of success on its head. The numbers
are important, the way people respond to
your show are obviously important, but that's
not why you're there, you're there to
give you're not there to receive.

2018 Audi Q5 Review – Preview Drive - Duration: 17:32.
2018 Audi Q5 Review – Preview Drive
Paul Horrell's 2018 Audi Q5 Review with pricing, specs, performance, ride and handling, safety, verdict and score.
: Audi cautiously evolves every aspect of its global smash-hit mid-size crossover.
From $65,900+ORC 3 years/unlimited km 20L turbo petrol 4cyl, 20L turbo diesel 4cyl 185kW at 5000-6000rpm (petrol), 140kW at 3800-4200rpm (diesel) 370Nm at 1600-4500rpm (petrol), 400Nm at 1750-3000rpm (diesel) 7-speed DSG (both) all-wheel drive 4663 (L), 1893mm (W EXC MIRRORS), 1659mm (H) N/A 750kg (UNBRAKED), 2400kg (BRAKED) 1795kg (Petrol), 1845 (diesel) 5 70 litres (petrol) 65 litres (diesel) space saver 7.
3 L/100km (petrol), 5. 3 L/100KM (petrol) combined cycle petrol, diesel.
AUDI'S FIRST Q5 was launched on the wave of the mid-size crossover boom, just at the time when millions of buyers worldwide decided they wanted something taller than a car, but not so clunky as a true SUV.
For this new one, the looks have changed only very subtly, but this is an almost all-new Q5. It's quieter, more high-tech, better-riding, safer, more economical, yadda yadda.
But hardly changed at all in role or character. Which means it's compact enough for the city but roomy enough for a family and useful enough for mild adventuring. All done with Audi's habitual civilised manners.
The new one is based on the same platform as the A4 and A5 series. It uses a quantity of aluminium in the body shell, plus steels with a better strength-to-weight ratio, and is 90kg lighter than before.
This helps performance, economy and agility. That same platform is related to the Q7's which means some very high-end electronic assistance features, which we've covered in the safety section below.
Audi Australia is so keen to get punters into this new Audi Q5 that it has flown a handful of cars Down Under and secreted them at dealerships around the place for test drives.
Because they're in such high demand here, we've sourced this review out of the UK – it will launch here properly in June. WHAT'S THE INTERIOR LIKE?.
I got out of an Audi S5 cabriolet and straight into a Q5. One a fast glamourpuss convertible, the other a family crossover.
And yet, apart from the fact I was sitting higher and had a hard roof over my head, almost nothing had changed.
(OK, if you look closely, the Q5 dash does show some extra height, by running a horizontal trim strip between the glovebox and heater control area and the vents above.
The A5 and A4 don't have this.) So Audi has striven to make it crossover cabin thoroughly car-like, and the same applies to the drive experience.
If you want your posh 4×4's interior style to be different from a car's then you need to see your Land Rover dealer about an Evoque.
It's damnably hard to find fault with this cabin. It's boring to say it over again, but Audi really is at the front of the pack with its fit and finish.
The driving position drapes you naturally in front of the wheel and pedals. The controls are logical, and meet your fingers with precise snickety-snick actions.
The infotainment is based on a screen that stands erect from the centre dash above the vents.
It's quite a way from you, but you don't have to squint because the graphics are clear, and you don't have to stretch because it's not a touchscreen.
You control it via a logical ops centre in front of the transmission lever. In fact, the lever itself is shaped to act as a wrist rest while you do so.
Even the base model in Oz, called Design, gets the same hi-res monitor as the upper Sport trim, and similar mapping.
But the system is 4G connected in the Sport versions, giving you Google satellite mapping (pointless while you drive) and live traffic from sunatraffic.com.au (handy).
The upper system also includes a touch pad so you can 'handwrite' destinations into the system, and a 10Gb music store.
Anyway, whichever you get, it's a logical infotaiment system that's easy to find your way around.
With one exception: phone mirroring (Apple CarPlay and Android) is included, and they work well enough, but there's no menu shortcut to switch rapidly between, say, the car-native system and the phone-mirroring system.
So if you want to check what track your phone has just shuffled to, then go back to the car's own navigation display, you face an intricate dance of knob-twiddling and button-jabbing.
Two USBs, an aux-in, Bluetooth streaming and the optional 10Gb storage mean you can take care of your music in plenty of other way than mirroring. Optionally a QI wireless pad will charge your phone too.
The Sport level gets Audi's virtual instrument display. It's a real wow factor, being able to change the size of the speedo and put on a huge map.
But the more I drive cars fitted with this system, the less I use its options. I just leave it in its clearest, simplest design, which apes real clocks. Go figure.
Much preferable is the head-up display, which comes in a Technik package with active LED headlamps and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo. Some of Audi's earlier B&O systems didn't really perform, but this one is a sweet-sounding belter.
Both front seats have power adjustment including in-out-up-down lumbar pads. They're trimmed partly in real leather, partly in fake stuff.
The back seat has a vividly contoured cushion that suggests there's space for two grown-ups with a plus-one child between. The kid is also less likely than an adult to grumble about the bulk of the transmission tunnel.
Legroom and foot space are fine for the outer pair. Optionally the rear can be had with a slide and recline function.
Back-seat life is improved by a local control for temperature, and map lights. For storage, second-row folks get seat-back nets, bottle holders in the doors and cupholders in the centre armrest.
The boot is deep. A 40:20:40 backrest split adds flexibility. On its walls are small nets, an elastic strap and a couple of hooks to keep small stuff from bouncing around. There's a bigger stretch net on the floor too.
An optional system of rails, sliding barriers and straps will secure heavier stuff. WHAT'S IT LIKE ON THE ROAD?.
If I were talking about a BMW, I'd always recommend a 3-series Touring wagon over an X3 crossover. With Mercedes I'd point you at a C-class Estate over a GLC.
That's because the cars are more engaging to drive than the crossovers. Not so at Audi. The A4 Avant is all about refinement and insulation over driver engagement, so you might as well have this Q5.
In any case it's a dynamically impressive crossover – more supple than an X3, more agile than a GLC.
I drove the car with the 20TFSi petrol engine. It's satisfyingly perky and very quiet.
There's decent punch in the middle rev ranges, and a keen smooth pull right out to the red-line at 6800. You're looking at a 6.3-second to 100km/h time.
But the Q5 doesn't always feel quite as fast as that, because the standing-start time is flattered by Quattro traction and the instant shifts of the twin-clutch transmission.
That's Audi's seven-speed box, and it acts quickly to commands from the paddles. Driven in auto mode, as most people will, it reads the road and your thoughts well.
Its shift strategy is determined by the Audi Drive Select switch, Audi's name for a configurable eco-comfort-sport selector. It will declutch and let the Q5 freewheel when you're gently decelerating or going downhill, saving fuel and dropping the noise further.
Also for saving fuel, the rear axle drive is completely disengaged when there's no call for rear traction. You don't notice this, which is entirely the point.
When you need some rear torque for slippery roads, quick getaways or hard cornering, it'll turn up without your having to call for it.
The test car had optional air suspension. It brings a decently supple ride. The dampers control body movements well, so there's no sense of excess roll in corners or heave on undulating roads.
Into and through bends, the steering is calm but progressive. It's an easy car to thread accurately through bends, or maintain a highway lane. It won't have you thinking about steering feedback or throttle-adjustability. It's not that sort of car.
The main impression on the move in the Q5 is quiet orderliness. It's brisk and well-controlled, but comfy. And above all else, remarkably quiet. Watch the speedo – you could be going quicker than you estimated.
The air suspension option comes with an off-road mode for the Audi drive Select, which raises the clearance a little and re-configures the traction systems.
There was no chance to try it on the route Audi suggested… make of that what you will. WHAT ABOUT THE SAFETY FEATURES?.
The Euro NCAP test was pretty praiseworthy, and in fact Australian spec vehicles get more airbags than the base European spec. The set supplied in Australia includes both side and curtain bags for front and rear.
Crash performance in the test was strong, protecting adults and children well. A five-star result.
Pedestrian protection is OK, helped by an active bonnet if the car hits someone. Far more significant, the Q5 tries to avoid hitting anyone, thanks to an effective auto-brake collision mitigation system that detects people on foot, cars and cyclists.
Australian-spec cars also get as standard adaptive cruise control, which is useful to save fatigue on long trips and avoid speeding. Strangely, there's no lane-keeping support.
The blind-spot warning kit is standard here – a good package that doesn't just warn of cars in the blind-spot, or that are crossing behind when you reverse out of a drive.
It also warns you not to open the door if you're parked at the side of the road and a vehicle is passing. And if you turn right across the path of another vehicle at a junction, it sounds a warning.
Your eyes are also supported in other ways: Audi's excellent LED matrix headlights are on the options menu, and a reversing camera is standard. WHY WOULD YOU BUY ONE?.
The Q5 is a conservative, risk-free crossover. It's expensive, but beautifully made. Your neighbours will be a little jealous, if that's what matters to you. But they won't actually hate you like they would if you bought a bigger bullying SUV.
Only in one way does it lose out to a rival – a Porsche Macan 20 is a bit more fun to steer. Editors Rating. Whats the interior like?. Whats it like on the road?.
What about safety features?.
