RADIO host Yumi Stynes has been in the public eye for more than a decade. But during her time in the spotlight, she's been harbouring a dark secret. Yumi Stynes has opened up about her battle with alcohol for the first time.
Yumi Stynes' booze battle: 'It was my medicine'
Stynes, 42, who hosts The 3PM Pickup, made the confession while presenting ABC podcast Ladies, We Need To Talk.
She admitted she'd begun drinking at the age of 12, and had struggled with it since she was just 15 years old — despite trying to quit several times.
As Stynes later wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald: "I loved to drink. Immediately. It was the medicine that got me through life. And that was perfectly normal.".
The issue escalated as she progressed through her teens, where she suddenly found herself with spending money and a fake ID.
"At 17, I passed out cold at a rock concert and had to be carried to safety by a friend's boyfriend," Stynes wrote. "At no point afterwards did I think I might have a drinking problem.
I'd just overheated and timed it poorly and been overwhelmed by the crowd.".
The media personality described having "glowing skin, lust for life, shiny eyes" after giving up booze when she fell pregnant at 26, but fell right back into her old habits once the baby was born.
"The pregnancy break didn't cure the addiction though, and I returned to drinking with a vengeance," Stynes said. "If anything, motherhood turned my thirst into a rage.
Stynes' lifestyle has made it hard to give up booze. During a two-year period where she gave up drinking completely, she claimed her entire life changed.
"I became effective at achieving things that mattered — like starting a new job, finally getting my driver's license, meeting deadlines. I was a better friend and better mother," she said.
Since then, Stynes has quit drinking two more times — and revealed in the podcast she quit for good earlier this year and began attending AA meetings.
"I quite like to imagine a world where I can enjoy a beer, or a glass of rose with friends. But I've been stone-cold sober since January, because when I drink, I don't know how to stop.".
