i want to take a few minutes
the brand-new iPhone 8 plus versus the iPhone 7 plus which one of these phones
is faster well obviously it's the iPhone 8 because it's a newer phone so the X is
faster than the iPhone 7 plus so think of watching I'm Daniel and I'll see you
guys in my next one so effects I know I'm hungry joking so
the iPhone 8 should be faster than the iPhone 7 but just how much faster is it
and should you upgrade alone just based on performance so welcome to my ultimate
speed test series and in this series I test out everything when it comes to the
performance of two devices so not just the usual epilim speed test but also
photo and video processing 4k video editing Wi-Fi speed test stores speed
test RAM management fingerprint speed test multiple GPU and multiple CPU
benchmarks JavaScript rendering performance and so so much more so
welcome to the ultimate speed test between the iPhone 8 plus and the iPhone
7 plus grab some snacks and enjoy
okay so we have the iPhone 8 plus on the left and yeah phone seven plus on the
right now before starting the actual comparison I wanna mention a few things
so I have exactly the same apps on both exactly the same settings and I've
turned the brightness up to 100% on both and the volume is also the same on both
I've disabled true tone and also auto lock is set to never on both devices
screen rotation lock is on I've also removed the SIM card on both I
put both of them on airplane mode I've enabled do not disturb mode and I've
also enabled Wi-Fi you should also pay attention at the battery life so at the
moment they're both fully charged at 100%
okay so section one let's start off with the actual specs so the iPhones phone
plus comes with three gigabytes of RAM and the Apple a10 processor the Apple
Eden processor comes with two high-performance cores clocked at 2.30
four gigahertz each and then also two low performance cores clocked at about
1.7 Gertz each and the Apple a 10 ship is based on a 60 nanometer process
moving on to the iPhone 8 plus Stefan eight plus comes with three gigabytes of
RAM and the Apple a 11 processor the appli 11 comes with nook to you but
actually for high performance cores clocked at 2.92 gigahertz each and then
also to low performance cores we don't actually know the clock for these but
they should be about the same as on the iPhone 7 around 1.7 1.8 or maybe one
point nine yards and the Apple 11 chip is now based on a smaller than an
ohmmeter process but the biggest difference between this still is that
the iPhone 7 only uses the two high-performance course when you run an
intensive app or when you're doing benchmarks whereas the iPhone 8 can
actually use all six cores when you're you know running an intensive app or
giving benchmarks of six cords usable on this one whereas on this one um we have
to when you're doing something press very heavy pence X number two let's do
the Apple on speed test so on the Left we have the iPhone eight plus and on the
right we have the iPhone 7 plus okay so the timer has started and I'm going to
start off with some more lightweight apps so maybe see CNN and as you can see
the iPhone 8 is so so so ahead of the iPhone 7 plus so it's already started
launching the 2d games so crossroad is the first one and this one for some
reason takes ages to load on the iPhone 7 plus even on the iPhone 8 it took
quite a while and only 20 seconds in and the iPhone 8 is
already done loading up Monument Valley which is basically one game ahead one
app ahead of the iPhone 7 plus next up the next game is hitman go this is
actually one of my one of my favorite games definitely give it a go so I'm
going to launch the first levels of first chapter level 15 actually on both
and as you can see the iPhone 7 plus interesting enough is actually catching
up to the iPhone 8 next up we have Temple Run 2 ok so I sped up everything
by 200% because I really don't want to bore you so tempo run to the iPhone 7
plus is still loading this up and timer run to actually ran at definitely 60
frames per second and was really fluid on the iPhone 8 plus and probably 5857
on the iPhone 7 plus so it really small difference from what I could tell at
least and GTA san andreas this one already finished loading on a con 8 plus
and it's only still loading only iPhone 7 plus so they phone 8 plus is already
loading that trailer 2 which is one of the most demanding games out there next
up I just want to run minecraft and yes I know minecraft is not a demanding game
but I just want to see how fast it actually they actually load the world so
they have the exact same world and now next up I want to do a Photoshop Express
test so this is a 5k resolution image I'm gonna add vibrancy and I want to see
how long it takes for each phone to export so obviously definitely a plus is
way way way ahead of the iPhone 7 plus and now we're into GarageBand and this
is a pretty complex project that I have and it's playing pretty smoothly on the
iPhone 8 plus and the iPhone 8 plus is finally on the final test which is
exporting a 4k video and when it comes to the 4k video so this is the same the
exact same video file on both devices so I've actually recorded this video with
the iPhone 7 plus and 4k 30 frames per second so definitely not 60 so same
video same exact file on both and the video was actually recorded on iOS 11
obviously in HEV C so the iPhone 8 should just smoke the iPhone 7 plus but
it's actually for some reason it seems that the iPhone 8 plus is slower than
the iPhone 7 plus this is weird seems like gay Phone 7 plus is actually
catching up when it comes to 4k video export this is weird and the video has
almost finished exporting and just take a look at this di Phone 8 did finish
first indeed iPhone 7 plus was only a few seconds
behind so now I'm going to stop the timer and just take a look at this only
a 1 second difference between a 2 phone so 4 minutes and 46 seconds and yek on 8
plus and 4 minutes and 47 seconds on the iPhone 7 plus this is really
really weird obviously the iPhone 8 plus was much
much quicker than the iPhone 7 plus the only difference the only big difference
was when it came to the 4k video I didn't think so I decided to do this
test again so I've recorded literally the couch so
there's just black so both phones face down one minute 4k
video at 30 frames per second on both HVC and I want to just do this test
again export in 4k and see if you know if I di phone it should be significantly
faster still than the iPhone 7 plus and the test is now finished and the iPhone
7 close finish first wait what and the iPhone 8 was quite a
few seconds almost a full minute behind the iPhone 7 plus I'll explain why this
is at the end of the video now let's move on to the RAM management test so I
just want to see how many apps both of these phones managed to keep open in the
background so both of them have three gigabytes of RAM and as you can see
Photoshop Express is open on both let's try garage bands exactly the same on
both the iPhone 8 did load up the conflict animation a bit faster now when
it comes to GTA san andreas same on both so I'm not really seeing any differences
here even when it comes to hitman this one still has to load on both so none of
these phones actually managed to keep it open in the background and when it comes
to Minecraft this one is still loaded on both actually it went into the menu the
pause menu that sugar 2 still load it on both if you resume the game it's fully
playable so pretty much the same the exact same experience when it comes to
RAM management on the iPhone 8 + and the iPhone 7 + now I'm going to close all
the apps running a background on both devices and I'm going to start off with
the actual benchmarks so starting off with a geek bench for this is the first
of the two CPU benchmarks that I'm going to do each bench for and Geekbench 4
seems to read the iPhone the iPhone 7s processor as they apply 10 fusion but it
doesn't really read the Apple 11 chip so let me just start up the CPU test run
benchmark and I'm not gonna give you the time because I don't think the time
matters in this benchmark only the actual score okay so I've just
about everything up and something really interesting just happened the iPhone 7
plus finished first and this is really strange but then the icon eight plus was
only a few seconds slower but it actually got a much higher score so 4250
as the single core and over 10,000 as the multi-core yes this is even more
powerful than a 13-inch 2017 macbook pro then you can also see that Geekbench 4
correctly detects all six cores on on the f-18 plus and then we also have
eight megabytes of level two cache on the icon eight plus and only iPhone 7
plus we have three megabytes so quite a really significant improvement when it
comes to level 2 cache we're really impressed considering that this is
essentially just a mobile phone now also when it comes to CPU benchmarks I want
to do an end to to benchmark now and to to benchmark this one actually tests
everything cell Ram CPU GPU and even the storage speed and UX and so on so
there's not upset a lot of tests in this and you can immediately see that the
iPhone 8 is a bit more fluid and also the iPhone 8 is ahead in the test so let
me just fast-forward this and the first one to finish the test was as expected
the iPhone 8 and got a score of one hundred and ninety six thousand and
fifty one whereas de France oneplus got 160 mm so there is indeed a significant
difference between it to interesting enough if you take a look at all the
tests the iPhone 7 plus actually has a higher CPU score which is pretty
interesting but overall I think this is just a mistake from intuitive overall DF
only does have a much higher overall score moving on section number five I
want to do a few tests that test out only the GPU performance of these two
phones so the first one is still Geekbench but in this case I'm going to
run the compute benchmark you can actually do this on the Macs and you can
run this on Windows and Linux as well so let me just fast forward this and the
iPhone 8 plus has finished first and got a really impressive score of 15,000
which is actually more than half the score of the Intel iris 630 graphics the
integrated one that's inside 2017 MacBook Pros for example next up I want
to do one of the most I think this is actually the most demanding GPO
test then you can do on a phone so this is the ice storm slingshot extreme test
so this one actually renders everything in 1080p on the iPhones only phone 7
plus or 1/8 plus atleast because they have attained if you display but if you
take a look at the graphics of the test and the effects everything looks this is
like console quality graphics obviously none of these are actually running this
set and even 30 frames per seconds that are running these at about 10 5 maybe 12
frames per second if you take a look at the iPhone 8 plus you can see that
everything is much smoother and much more fluid than on the iPhone 7 plus
I've skipped a few minutes into the test and the iPhone 8 plus is likely ahead of
the iPhone 7 plus not by much only by a few seconds so let me just fast-forward
all this and take a look at the results so a pretty big difference between the
two 2642 one gave on eight plus and a thousand 862 on the iPhone 7 plus okay
so taking a look at the actual frame rate the iPhone 8 plus scored 21:43 for
the best test that was the best result versus 17 frames per second on the
iPhone 7 plus and the worst test was actually the physic tests in which it
scored 10 frames per second versus 4 frames per second so about double the
performance when it comes to physics tests and in the frame rate we get about
5 extra frames per second now I also want to do one more GPU benchmark and
this is GFX bench and this is the Manhattan test 1080p and this is run off
screen which means that the tests aren't going to be affected by the devices
display resolution so this is going to be run in the background it's not going
to be displayed or anything and Eddie and will see the results which should be
significantly higher this time on the iPhone 8 plus so the test is now
finished and we actually have a pretty big
difference between the two so finally we do see eppley 11 GPU detected by GFX
bench and we have an average frame rate of 84 frames per second versus 61
only iPhone 7 plus so a pretty big difference here when it comes to
off-screen rendering infinity P now moving on to test number 6 I want to do
a JavaScript rendering performance in Safari and I want to see how big of an
improvement we get with the Apple II 11 processor and the test is now finished
on the iPhone 8 which was really really quick 146
seconds versus 187 so we also get the pretty significant gain in Safari when
it comes to JavaScript performance and now I want to do just one more
JavaScript benchmark and this is with Google octane and as you can see you've
already get real-time results and the ones on the iPhone 8 plus are much
higher than any iPhone 7 plus and the test is now finished
35,000 vs 29,000 again one more win for the f-18 plus movie on test number seven
now I want to test out and see how fast the SSD or the flash storage inside the
iPhone 8 and a phone seven actually is case on the iPhone eight we have a read
speed of 165 megabytes versus 162 so pretty much the same but take a look at
the read speed over one gigabyte per second on the iPhone 8 plus and 862
megabytes per second on the iPhone 7 plus doing this test again we have a
slightly higher right now on the iPhone 7 plus but still over over one gigabyte
per second when it comes to the rate speed on the iPhone 8 plus so definitely
a pretty big improvement on the iPhone 8 even more than a 10 to 50 percent
improvement that I was expecting and you know the one that I've kept mentioning
in my previous videos next up moving on to test number 8 I want to test out the
Wi-Fi performance and see if we have any differences here so I'm connected to the
same five cards Wi-Fi network and I'm obviously going to run the test
separately because both devices are connected to the same network so I don't
want any device to you know affect the other so first one is the iPhone 7 plus
and we have 119 down and 127 up the iPhone 8 plus actually scored lower so
let me just run this test again and on the iPhone 7 plus we are getting about
117 and about 134 for the upload speed so both of these scores are within the
margin of error so technically no difference when it comes to Wi-Fi and
finally I want to do a fingerprint speed test and see if we have any differences
here so both of these come with a second-generation touch ID and I've
actually synced the shots in post so I'm actually pressing the button even though
it's pretty difficult to see and pressing it at the same time and it
seems that the iPhone 8 plus is a tiny bit faster than the iPhone 7 plus most
likely because of the Apple II 11 chip being able to process touch it faster
than the Apple 810 inside a iPhone 7 plus but this is just a small difference
so nothing that you will actually notice in a real day-to-day use okay so India
and I wasn't expecting such a result so even though the iPhone 8 is indeed
significantly more powerful than knife 1 7 and real word use so in Apple on speed
test and remanent and even in 4k video anything the iPhone 8 was actually
exactly the same or even slower in some cases in iMovie for example than the
iPhone 7 wait wait wait what what you have so much performance in an iPhone 8
what's what's the deal with that so the benchmarks are saying that the iPhone 8
is significantly more powerful but we're not seeing that performance well this is
what I think I think the apps haven't been optimised to actually use all six
cores on the iPhone 8 yet so benchmarking apps that you seem to take
full advantage of the extra four cores usable on the Apple II 11 chip but
regular apps or even Apple apps such as iMovie for example they don't seem to do
that at least not yet so let me know in the comments if you think I should redo
this test in a few months once apps get updated to take full
advantage of the appellate 11 processor but honestly I think that the result
would be pretty much the same so the iPhone 7 is is a really powerful device
it's comparable to a 2015 MacBook Pro 13 inch MacBook Pros that's really really
powerful it's still the king when it comes to smartphone performance but the
iPhone 8 tops that even further it's comparable to a 13-inch 2017 MacBook Pro
and it's going to be even more powerful than that once Pro apps get updated to
take full advantage of this extra power so you should notice a few extra seconds
on a phone eight in a few months but that's definitely not something you
should go ahead and operate for so let me subscribe if you want to see more in
