Well, hello my friends!
This is John O'Leary.
And what a joy it is to be with you on this gorgeous Wednesday morning.
Today I want to talk to you about standing up to bullies.
This will be a message that may be appropriate for your kids in grade school, middle school,
high school, or college might receive.
And I think it's one that each and every one of us at any age in life, regardless of the
opportunities or challenges before us today might also benefit from receiving.
When I was in high school, pretty normal life, but there was one guy- pretty big, tough,
mean, football player- who loved to make fun, of all things- ready for it?- my hands.
For those of you who don't know my story well, I'm 9 years old when I get burned on 100%
of my body, and one of the things that was taken from me were my fingers.
And this guy, junior year of high school, decides to make fun of my hands.
Not once, or twice, but day after day.
Then week after week.
Then month after month.
And no one does the right thing.
No one with love and compassion stands up and takes a stand.
And then one day, in history class junior year- Mr. Sutherland's class- the smallest
kid in our entire class stands up.
You never know who's going to be the one, do you?
The smallest kid stands, he walks back, he points down at the big tough bully, and then
he says these words (listen to them):
"Dude!
Dude!
SHUT UP!
You have no idea what this kid's been through.
Shut up!
Shut up!"
When the big dude, this big muscular football player, the popular guy, heard what the little
guy with very little muscle tone and very small network said, what do you think the
big guy did?
When I ask kids, when I speak to audiences made up of kids, they almost always say, "I
bet the big guy punches the little guy."
But my friends, what the big guy did is almost always what they do when they see examples
of real courage, real compassion, real grace, real love around them.
Almost always.
What the big guy did is he put his hands together on his desk, he put his head down, and he
never once said a negative word against me or anybody else in our junior year of high
school or anybody else for the remainder of our time in that school.
During these days that are full of some bullies around us in schools, in our work environments,
in our healthcare systems, in our communities, in our global marketplaces, what is so important
I think is not to shy away from it, it's not to bury our heads in the sand,
I think it's to actually have the audacity to stand up, to make a stand, to do the right
thing, to walk to the back of the classroom, to point down, and to speak truth:
"Dude!
Shut up!
Shut up!
You have no idea what that kid has been through.
Shut up!"
It takes courage, it takes understanding, it takes compassion to speak these words,
and yet my friend, I think it also sets free not only the person who decides to boldly
share them, but also the one lucky enough to hear them.
Let's make sure we say those words (maybe not verbatim, shut up!), but that we speak
them in tones that are loving, and full of compassion, and full of truth, full of ways
to wake people up so that they can understand they don't understand, they can't comprehend
what someone else has been through.
But they can choose today to seek, to place their feet in two shoes that are different
than their own, into lives, into skin tone, into racial and political and geopolitical
systems that are different than their own in order to wake up from their own perspective,
in order to take on the lens of someone else.
I think what we need is a coming together, and what better opportunity is there than
right now, TODAY, on this Wednesday morning.
So my friends, for this time and until next time,
Dude!
Dude!
Wake up!
This is your day.

Liverpool transfer news: Liverpool have been 'very smart' to snap up Naby Keita transfer - Duration: 3:25.
Liverpool transfer news: Liverpool have been 'very smart' to snap up Naby Keita transfer
agreed a club-record deal for Keita, who moves to Merseyside from German side RB Leipzig. Jurgen Klopp made Keita one of his primary target but failed in securing midfielder after several offers were rejected.
Liverpool eventually agreed to pay £48million, plus an undisclosed premium, for the Guinea international to move to Anfield next summer. With Liverpool having confirmed the deal, Keita said: "I will become part of a project that excites me greatly.
"My commitment to RBL remains absolute for the remainder of my time at the club. "Having my future resolved means I can now focus on helping RBL achieve great things this season.
"Until I join my new club, next summer, I will remain an interested supporter from a distance.
German football journalist Raphael Honigstein said Liverpool's move to allow Keita to stay in Germany for another season will mean they will have a more experienced player when he eventually makes the move.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think it makes a lot of sense, he has had such a good season with Leipzig.
"And, he'll be, if anything, a more experienced player, some Champions League exposure, playing to a different rhythm – Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday.
"I think Liverpool have been very smart to do this deal now. Whether that decreases the pressure to do something for this transfer window, I'm not so sure.
"I still think there is a little bit of depth missing in some positions, but as I said, it makes a lot of sense to tie it up now.
Liverpool are also said to be lining up a £60million bid for Monaco's Thomas Lemar after the club-record deal for Keita.
Monaco are, however, understood to be reluctant to sell another player this summer after losing Kylian Mbappe, Bernado Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Timoue Bakyoko.
Arsenal are also interested in Lemar but Arsene Wenger insisted last week that his former club had told him the 21-year-old France international was not for sale. agreed a club-record deal for Keita, who moves to Merseyside from German side RB Leipzig.

Kristen Stewart Meets Up with Girlfriend Stella Maxwell After Her Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Fitting
Despite being just barely the end of summer, much like the scourge that is pumpkin spice season, somehow the preparations for the Victoria's Secret fashion show are already upon us.
First, there were the castings in which one after another aspiring Angel entered VS HQ in the hopes of a chance to strut her stuff in the brand's lingerie come November.
And now, the first of many fittings has just begun to transpire with some of the biggest faces on the catwalk like Gigi and Bella Hadid, Martha Hunt and Elsa Hosk all getting measured to make sure those wings and barely-there fashions fit just right.
And amongst them was Victoria's Secret favorite Stella Maxwell who met up with her girlfriend Kristen Stewart afterwards for a stroll around N.
After what was surely a busy morning of trying on various bras and those over-the-top, ornate wings that can weigh up to sixty pounds, Stella decided to take things easy, swapping out the studded Maison Martin Margiela boots she wore to the fittings for a pair of black, metal-accented loafers.
The model met up with her girlfriend Kristen Stewart to take a walk with her and her dog.
While Maxwell was dressed all in black, Kristen opted for an all-white look wearing a cropped t-shirt, low-slung, baggy jeans and Adidas sneakers, keeping her short, frosted hair out of her face with the help of a blue bandana.
Stella, on the other hand, fresh off her Victoria's Secret fitting, was wearing the same outfit from earlier, save for those aforementioned booties — a pair of tiny black denim cutoffs, a white cropped tee and a black leather motorcycle jacket with her long, blonde hair worn down and effortlessly tousled.
The model was also spotted leaving the lingerie brand's building breaking what must surely be the cardinal rule of Angel-dom, dragging her new white, feathered training wings across the New York City sidewalks.
Clearly, to score a coveted spot on the Victoria's Secret runway you need to not only possess an enviable set of abs and a statuesque frame, but also a really nonchalant attitude towards dirt and grime.

Korean gov't aims to bump up welfare spending in 2018 for inclusive, people-centered growth - Duration: 2:40.
The South Korean government has unveiled its budget proposal for 2018,... the first year
of pushing forward its inclusive and more 'people-centered' socioeconomic policies.
It has allocated the largest increase in welfare spending,... taking up a third of the entire
annual budget.
Our Oh Soo-young has the numbers.
Improving citizens' livelihoods is at the core of the South Korean government's proposed
budget for next year.
Of the three-hundred-and-eighty-two billion U.S. dollar budget,... more than a third will
be allocated to job creation and social welfare programs-- a record on-year increase of twelve-point-nine
percent.
Spending on education will also get a boost of eleven-point-seven percent,... and, amid
higher tensions with North Korea,... defense spending will be upped by nearly seven percent
to support the development of a three-pillar defense system,... and a salary hike for soldiers.
(Korean) "Budgetary spending will expand by seven-point-one
percent next year,... two-point-six percentage points above the nominal growth rate.
That hasn't happened in nine years.
We have made rigorous cuts in government spending worth nine-point-seven billion dollars to
afford this and keep national debt-to- GDP ratio in the 40 percent range."
The biggest cutback -- at 20 percent -- has been made to social overhead projects, followed
by culture and leisure at eight percent and environmental spending at two percent.
In addition to the spending cuts,... the finance ministry says extra tax collection-- a natural
rise of nearly 54 billion dollars -- will boost financing of the government's five-year
policy goals tallied at 158 billion dollars,... and even additional welfare policies introduced
in recent weeks.
These include the expansion of health insurance coverage and monthly childcare benefits.
However, without raising taxes on the middle class,... experts question whether the government
can keep its balance sheet in the black.
(Korean) "Down the line, government spending seems
set to grow... so the flow of income needs to match that -- or taxes will have to go
up.
But the government has already proposed a tax hike for high income earners and conglomerates.
According to 2015 figures, there's room for a general rise in taxes for all citizens,...
as Korea's tax-to-GDP ratio is 25-point-three percent,...some nine points below the OECD
average of 34-point-four percent."
Instead of kicking the can down the road,... experts say the government must first establish
the appropriate level of welfare coverage,... and seek societal consensus on working towards
it by steadily raising taxes.
Oh Soo-young, Arirang News.
