My grandfather, when I was very young, taught me how to
talk to trees.
I know that sounds crazy, but it's something very real
in our culture. It has real meaning.
We can learn a great deal from the natural world.
My parents always told me that I had a choice
to do whatever I wanted to do in life.
I could have been a soccer player or a motorcycle racer
and I still wish I had been one of those two,
but I accepted the responsibility of being
hereditary leader.
It's not about taking the reins
and being out in front, but it's about
understanding how to get the most out of people.
When we support others in success, that reflects
back on your success as well.
It's also a lot of responsibility to know that
on my shoulders is 27 generations of previous leaders.
I'm now employed with The Nature Conservancy as
the economic development lead for the Emerald Edge initiative.
My job is essentially to ensure that local communities
can find some economic benefit from conservation.
As human beings there is no relationship more critical
to our well-being than that which we have
with Mother Earth, with the natural environment.
For many indigenous peoples around the world
we've known for many thousands of years that our relationship
determines how successful we are as a community and how
happy we are, how warm we are.
Everything that we do in life is about relationships.
I'm very fortunate to walk between two worlds,
to come from an indigenous cultural perspective
and a non-indigenous cultural perspective.
It's no secret that there is some tension
in the relationship between indigenous and
non-indigenous people.
I think the common ground is the state
of the natural environment
and how we can both work to protect that
and it just takes every one of us that wants to create change
to put words into action and to help one another.
