So in today's video I'm just going to talk about what the appropriate liquids
for fasting are. Now I get asked this question a lol, like a lot! So I think
it's about time to make a video and I just briefly clarify what you can have
and what you can't have, so, first of all let's just define what fasting is. Now
there's there's two definitions. The first is complete abstinence from foods
so nothing at all and people call this a dry fast (not even water), right, and this
is something I don't advocate it all. And some people will define fasts
as eating a little bit of food, 300, 400 calories per day. Basically
the way I like to look at it and I suggest you do is a fast is little to no
calories and if you're gonna consume any calories at all, they should be the
least insulinogenic - meaning they hardly spike insulin. Now that
macronutrient is fat, right? So protein turns to sugar through gluconeogenesis,
so it increases your blood sugar and it spikes your insulin, sugar and
carbohydrates which are basically sugar increase your insulin and increase
blood sugar. Fat doesn't really do this, but anything you eat is going to
increase your insulin, right? Because it's not necessarily the food that you're
eating per se, it's the reaction of your stomach (that's called the cephalic
response), so when your stomach kind of responds to food or even before you eat
the food insulin is secreted so the body's ready to properly shuttle
the sugar throughout cells and tissue in the body. So basically having coffee
is okay, having tea is okay, having sugar free gum is okay, having a little bit of
cream in your coffee is fine, a little bit of cream... anything under twenty or
thirty calories, a little bit of butter is fine if you eat that, MCT oil is
great I mean you're gonna elevate your ketone levels which can be great if
you're trying to get into ketosis, generally a little bit of fat
is gonna be fine, as long as you're not having like eight coffees per day. So if
you're having one or two coffees per day and you add in a bit of MCT oil or you
add in a bit of full fat milk - just a tiny bit - then that's fine you're only
having two servings of that across 16 hours or whatever. But if you're
having eight coffees a day and each one has some butter in it or cream that
could be like 80 calories each time and that can be the equivalent of like two
full meals of worth of calories in your fasting period and clearly that's not
"fasting", right? That's more classified as a "fat fast". So that's basically it.
Anything with sugar so gum with sugar or sugar in your coffee or tea, no, not even
a little bit because your insulin is just gonna go up, even with a tiny
bit, it's just gonna go up and you really are not fasting and getting the benefits
of fasting when you do that. But a tiny bit of butter, a tiny bit of MCT oil
and you're still gonna get the benefits of that increased insulin sensitivity
which you want, autophagy is still going to take place after a enough time
even with a little bit of butter in your coffee or cream. BDNF (brain-derived
neurotrophic factor) is gonna increase, you're gonna get all of the
main benefits. So don't be worried about putting a bit of cream in your coffee.
Ideally if you can withstand the taste have your coffee black, you know? It's
gonna be better. Just drink water, just drink a plain tea, but if you really
really really have to then it's fine and it's not gonna be a problem. So that's
the video we just wanted to clarify that. And yeah hopefully you got something
out of it hopefully this answers your question and if you already knew the
answer to this and you're still watching then thanks for watching anyway and
