Hi guys!
Welcome to Make2 and another Home Street video!
We tried this mobile game in a live stream a few days ago and I've been playing it pretty
hardcore since then.
At the time of this recording, the game is on version 0.7.5 and it's only been available
worldwide for like a week, so it's still too early to say whether we'll keep playing it.
But I like it so far.
The game is totally free to play, which is cool and good.
It's sort of like a neighborhood-size version of SimCity BuildIt, in that the mechanics
are pretty similar on a smaller scale, which some people might find cool and good, and
others might not.
We've seen people build and decorate some pretty nice houses and gardens, but we haven't
spent too much time doing that ourselves because I'm still figuring things out, trying to level
up, and most importantly, saving money.
We're kind of stingy like that.
But I thought I'd make a video to talk about how I've been doing so far and how exactly
I've gotten here.
As you can see, after just a few days of playing I'm at Level 17, which means I've unlocked
a lot of different work stations and also this big thing right here -- which is a ship.
We're going to check that out probably later, and I'm sure that lots of cool things are
gonna happen on it.
But for now I thought I would just use this video to walk through some basics.
Besides unlocking the big ship, I've also been able to upgrade my storage a couple times,
as you can see here, and we'll talk about why that's important in a little bit.
So basically Home Street for me right now is about balancing numbers.
There are a lot of different numbers and items and things to tap on, so I'm going to try
and break down how I've been playing.
I'd be interested to hear in the comments from you guys who are playing as well, how
you've been playing.
So for me this game revolves around JOBS, which you can look at by tapping this phone
icon at the bottom right of the screen.
Jobs are how you get coins and stars.
Coins pay for things -- that's pretty obvious.
Stars are how you level up.
And leveling up is how you unlock more things.
The way to complete jobs is to create or collect 2 types of objects: MEMORIES -- or you could
call them THOUGHTS -- and also PRODUCTS.
Some products can be made with memories, and some products can only be made with other
products, or with a mix of products and memories.
And some memories can only be created using other memories.
Still with me so far?
There are a couple of different types of MEMORIES and a few different ways to get them.
You can look at your collection of memories by tapping on the THOUGHT BUBBLE down here
at the bottom right of the screen next to the phone that has the JOBS.
The top part of this screen shows all the memories your collection currently holds.
The bottom part shows the memories that are being created.
For instance, to create more CREATIVITY memories, I'll tap on this icon at the top.
It usually costs 1 memory to make 2 more like it.
So you can see the CREATIVITY number at the top just went down by 1.
It takes about a minute or so to get a CREATIVITY bubble ready for collection.
When it's done, I'll tap on the CREATIVITY icon at the bottom and I'll get 2 back.
Because it costs 1 memory to make 2 more memories, it's a good idea to never let these numbers
at the top get down to zero -- unless of course you're already creating more of them at the
bottom.
I forget exactly what happens if you completely run out of memories down to zero, because
it was kind of scary the first time and I tried not let it happen again.
But as you level up in the game, you'll unlock the ability to create more types of memories.
Each one will take a different amount of time to get ready, with the memories which are
unlocked at higher levels taking more time.
As you can see, I have 8 memory bubbles in the bottom part of the screen, which means
I'm able to create 8 memories at a time.
When the game starts out, you only have 5 memory bubbles from what I can remember, but
you'll unlock more as you level up.
Another important thing to note here is the storage limit, which shows at the bottom middle
of the screen.
As you can see, my collection can currently hold 70 total memories.
I think when the game starts out, the storage limit is 40.
You can upgrade and increase the storage limit by collecting enough of certain items, as
you can see here.
There are a couple of ways to get these special items.
The main way is to do those JOBS we talked about.
These items will drop randomly as you complete jobs, but they're extremely rare and you'll
need to do a lot of jobs to increase your chances of getting them.
We'll talk about another possible way you can get these items later in this video.
There are other types of memories besides the ones you create here.
These other memories come from NEIGHBORS.
Once you get to a certain point in your game progress, you can link your game to Facebook
or Game Center and connect with all your friends who play Home Street as well.
Android players might be able to do it with Google Play -- but we don't know for sure
because we only play on Apple devices.
You can also use a FRIEND CODE to add someone manually, and you can see ours right now.
If you tap on the little red mailbox in front of your house, you'll see a screen saying
FRIEND THOUGHTS and a long sideways list of other Home Street players you've connected
to.
As you scroll through all these little icons, which I guess are just the profile pictures
from social media, you can see what level they're on, and you can also see different
types of memories above their pictures.
You can get these memories by tapping on the picture and INVITING the friend to your house.
It costs something to invite a friend over, and that cost is usually a product or another
kind of memory.
Then you'll have to wait a certain amount of time before the memory appears above your
mailbox for collection.
It's all different depending on the memory you request.
I don't think any of these memories which are offered are in your friends' control -- it's
just the game choosing randomly.
So if we're on your friends list, we can't decide what memory to offer so please don't
stress about it too much.
It's not in our hands because it's all decided somehow by the game.
While we're talking about friends and neighbors, we mentioned that there's another way to get
those memories, and it's also another way to get products as well -- and by the way
we'll be talking about products in a little bit.
But this other way to get memories and products is the MARKET.
Once you get to a certain point in your game, the MARKET will unlock.
This is where you and your neighbors can put memories and products up for sale, and also
buy them from each other.
The people you're connected to show under the FRIENDS tab, and you also get to see 5
random players under this WORLD tab.
Every 10 minutes, you can refresh the WORLD tab and see a different set of 5 players.
The MARKET can be really helpful because sometimes you just don't want to wait for however long
it takes to create a memory or a product yourself, so you can spend a few coins and have them
instantly.
It can also be helpful because sometimes, you might find a really rare object for sale
-- for instance, one of the objects you need to upgrade your storage.
I found someone selling a calculator on the market once and grabbed it so that I could
upgrade my memory storage.
You have to be really quick about buying at the market though, especially for rare items
or items that are difficult to produce, because other people can snap it up before you.
Usually as soon as I see something like that for sale, I immediately tap and buy it just
in case.
I don't even really look at the price because it's worth it to me just to save the time.
When you first start the game, I think the market allows you 3 slots to sell items, and
you can change the number and price you want to sell.
Later, you can unlock more slots to sell more things.
But here's a tip for selling things at the market: don't expect to make a lot of money
by pricing things too high, or by selling too many items at once.
At the time of this recording, the game doesn't allow people to choose the amount they want
to buy or the amount they want to pay -- it's basically like what you see from the seller
is what you have to get as a buyer.
Remember that most players have very limited storage, so they might not want to buy 10
paintings at once.
And because there are so many people selling the items that are common or easy to make,
you don't want to set prices too high because it won't be a good deal for anyone looking
to buy.
If you get stuck with stuff sitting in your market and no one's buying, you can get rid
of them by spending some of these red gems, but as you can probably guess, gems are hard
to get and I like to save them up for the future.
So let's finally talk about PRODUCTS.
Like we said before, in order to complete most jobs you'll need products, memories,
or both.
You create different kinds of products with a bunch of different kinds of work stations
which get unlocked as you level up.
The work stations can also start to make more kinds of products as you level up.
At the beginning of the game, for instance, you get a painting easel, an oven which bakes
cupcakes, and a garden patch which makes vegetables and I think also flowers.
And as you level up, the painting easel can make more kinds of paintings, and the oven
can make different kinds of cakes and also a pie, and the garden patch can make herbs
and fruit.
Each of these products requires you to spend a certain kind of memory, or another product,
or a combination of products and memories.
Other work stations you get as you level up are things like a refrigerator for making
meat and grain, a grill for turning meat into sausages and turkey, and a stone oven for
turning that grain into bread.
You'll also get a loom for making clothes, a sculpture stand, a sewing station -- all
kinds of things.
There's another type of workstation which uses only those memories you get from your
neighbors.
This is the SHED.
In the shed, you can use the memories from your neighbors to make things like toolboxes,
colored dye, craft materials, and metal.
Again, more of this stuff gets unlocked as you level up in the game.
One nice thing about the shed is that you can prepare these particular products ahead
of time, and they don't count towards your total storage of products until you tap on
them.
But you also can't use them until you tap on them and put them in your storage.
So let's talk about STORAGE versus JOBS.
When I first started playing, I thought you should probably just make lots of products
until you fill up your storage.
But as I've leveled up and unlocked more types of products, I've realized this isn't such
a great strategy anymore.
There have been a couple of times when I hit my storage limit and I couldn't collect any
other products I made, until I could figure out a way to get rid of the ones in my storage.
You can do this, by the way, either by selling products on the market, or by creating another
product which uses whatever you have in storage.
For instance, at the GRILL, the sausages and the roast chicken use meat, which gets created
by the refrigerator.
So if I have too many items in my storage, and they include meat, I can get rid of that
meat by making a sausage or a roast chicken, like that, which by the way also uses herbs
from the garden.
So that's 3 ingredients taken out and I'll get 2 back.
But I don't have to collect those 2 until I'm ready.
I can just let them sit like I'm letting all these various other items just sit.
The WOODWORKING TABLE is another good one to use, because it uses this piece of paper
from the DRAFTING TABLE to make a rocking horse or a bird house for instance.
Anyway, now that I've been playing for a while, I don't really ever have problems with product
storage because I'm always doing JOBS.
I let the jobs tell me what products to create, before I create them.
I might try to keep a few products in storage just to save some time -- like the products
I know get used a lot like vegetables and flowers and meat and grain.
But mostly I wait until a job tells me something is needed.
I'm just constantly looking at my jobs list and tapping back and forth between the different
products required.
It can all get a little complicated, so the game is pretty helpful in telling you how
to create each thing.
For instance, you can see the 3 ingredients required here for this job.
Tap on 1 of them, and then tap Show Me, and it'll take me directly to the work station
I need.
If that product requires other products, for instance this sculpture requires confidence,
which I have 8 of, and also metal, which I have zero of, you tap on the one that you
don't have and then tap on Show Me, and it'll again take you directly to the work station
you need.
And as you can see, I have metal ready to go, so if I just go back to Jobs and tap on
that statue again, it'll take me directly to the sculpture station and I just tap on
Create and I'm ready to go.
Now, there's a lot more to Home Street besides jobs, products, and memories.
For instance, there are regular challenges where you can earn special rewards for completing
a number of tasks in a certain amount of time, like collecting 6 paintings in a few hours.
And you can get points for each challenge completed, then compete against other players
for ranking, and if you place high enough, you get a special reward.
There are also supposed to be neighborhood events, but I haven't yet joined a neighborhood,
so we'll probably save that for another video.
There's an upcoming Halloween event, which you can see decorations for all around town,
and we'll probably do another video for that as well.
Another element of the game is this circus tent where you have the opportunity to buy
these 3 boxes.
You pay for the boxes with these ticket-looking things which drop from doing jobs and completing
tasks and things like that -- it's sort of random like those special items for upgrading
storage, I think.
And in each box you probably get a selection of these tokens.
I still don't know what the tokens are for.
I think it's for like neighborhood type things.
There's also a treasure box where you have the opportunity to get tokens and also more
tickets.
And a collectibles box where you have the opportunity to get different types of tickets.
I've currently got 20 of the lowest level ticket and I don't know, again, what these
are all for.
I guess now that I've got 20 I'm just going to go ahead and spend 10 just to see what
I get out of this green box.
And that'll probably be my last big spend of this video, so let's go ahead and try it.
Yep.
Okay, so it looks like a gold and a silver of these tickets.
Don't know if that's a good or bad thing or whether it was worth the 10 that I just spent,
but eventually I suppose it'll become clear.
And then obviously there's this big new ship which I haven't fully explored yet.
But in this video I just wanted to show the basics of what you can do up until about Level
16 or 17, and try to break it down in a way that will hopefully help other new players.
