Top 10 Movies You Didn't Know Were Based On Video Games - Duration: 6:05.

TOP 10 MOVIES YOU DIDN'T KNOW WERE BASED ON VIDEO GAMES

Video games are filled with phenomenal ideas.

And sometimes, the grand fantasies they present us with are too good to not want more of.

Enter cinematic adaptations.

Now, we've talked about the top 10 movies based off of video games in a previous list,

but this time around, we're taking a shot at the films you didn't realize were inspired

by or based on video games.

Some are adaptations that borrow certain games' plots, character archetypes, and even style.

Others are blatant rip offs.

So let's see how many of these you guys knew about.

10 Edge of Tomorrow Let's start off this list with some broad

strokes.

Edge of Tomorrow aka Live Die Repeat is a 2014 sci fi action film starring Tom Cruise

and Emily Blunt.

Inspired by the Japanese novel All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

He was inspired by an online account written by a video game player who was discussing

how restarting the game after the playable character's death allowed for trial and

error improvement, inspiring Sakurazaka to write a story in which the hero was being

played over and over.

9 Inglorious Basterds Many a fan have pointed out the similarities

between Bionic Commando and Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds.

While there is no confirmation as to whether or not the film was inspired by the NES 1988

classic, primarily for the loosely similar plots.

Both feature infiltration behind enemy lines and both result in Hitler's assassination.

8 Clash of the Titans - God of War While is quite obvious that the God of War

series is the culmination of several greek mythological media influences, including the

original Clash of the titans 1981 film, this 2010 remake has many visual elements that

people felt echoed the game franchise.

And, funny enough, the game version of the clash of the titans remake is pretty much

a copycat of God of War.

7 Pirates of the Caribbean - Monkey Island Series

This one is sometimes seen as more of a rip off rather than 'based on' or 'inspired

by' case.Okay, so yes, it's technically based off of the Disney ride.

Sure, cause it totally has a narrative, right?

Well, back in 1990 The Secret of Monkey Island came out, and it's protagonist Guybrush

Threepwood shares many a similarity with Orlando Bloom's Will Turner.

Down to their outfits.

The female lead in Monkey Island is captured by an undead pirate, and guess who else is?

Elizabeth Swann.

There's a lot of other similarities in the franchise that echo the game - voodoo priestess

who lives in a swamp, a town made out of wrecked pirate ships, and so on.

This rip off may be due to writer Ted Elliot who was credited for the Monkey Island film

adaptation that was cancelled in 2000 - Ted went on to write for Pirates, and its safe

to suspect that perhaps Teddy reused parts of his old script.

6 Pokemon Anime Alright, so this is cheating a tad, despite

the fact that there are a bunch of Pokemon movies that have come out of the woodwork

over the past few decades.

Many a fan got on board the Pokemon bandwagon after the anime television show blew up in

1997.

The franchise started with Japan's Pokemon Red and Green games back in 1996, 21 years

ago as of this recording.

Pokemon is the second best selling video game franchise to date, with only the Mario franchise

surpassing it.

5 Snowpiercer - Bioshock Here we have another case of a film that shares

a lot of parallels with a game, despite it not being official that the two have any sort

of relation or that the film was inspired by such.

Snowpiercer tells the story of a dystopian society that lives entirely on a train - earth

was ravaged by a freak natural disaster that has rendered it icy and inhabitable, and there's

a massive class divide on the train/once-luxury liner that humans now call home.

So how is it similar to BioShock?

Well, both are societies cut off from the world outside, both dystopian, both feature

social class divides, and, the cherry on top?

Wilford, who runs the train, is very similar to Andrew Ryan, the man who built Rapture

- both are egotistical megalomaniacs who built their societies on messed up political ideologies.

4 In the Name of the King - Dungeon Siege video games

Uwe Boll who is known for making video game inspired films and adaptations.

Whether or not you think they're any good is another debate in itself.

But apparently critics didn't think this 2007 film was all that great.

The film stars Jason Statham, John Rhys Davies and Ron Perlman, and was inspired the Dungeon

Siege series.

The game, on the other hand, was critically acclaimed, mainly for it's graphics and

fun, accessible gameplay, despite a mediocre plot.

So perhaps the lesson here is to not make a film about a game that's got a weak story

to begin with?

3 Hostel Part 2 - Chiller (1986) Chiller was a gun arcade game released back

in 1986 in which you play as a torturer who mutilates and murders NPCs in different private

dungeons.

So you can see the comparisons to that and Hostel Part 2, which takes place in a private

dungeon.

The game itself got a lot of heat, not just for it's excessive use of violence and gore,

but also it's ideologies - rather than fighting enemies who were capable of defending themselves,

you were tormenting the innocent, strictly for entertainment.

2 Tron We mentioned Tron Legacy on our top 10 movies

based on video games list, so naturally we want to talk about the 1982 film that was

inspired by one of video game history's trailblazers - Pong.

Creator Steven Lisberger initially began development on Tron back in 1976, completely fascinated

with Pong, wanting to make a film inspired by video games.

He said, I quote, "I realized that there were these techniques that waked be very suitable

for brining video games and computer visuals to the screen."

And thus the franchise was born.

1 Wreck it Ralph Based on the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade classic,

the film follows an arcade game villain named Ralph who decides to rebel against his antagonizing

role and become a hero himself.

Ralph notably shares a lot of qualities to DK, who in the real life game, is the villain

to protagonist Jump man, who would later become Mario.

The film started it's development back in the late 1980's with Disney, then being

under the working title High Score.

The film is chalk full of video game references, especially retro ones, including PacMan, Sonic

the Hedgehog, MegaMan and Super Mario Bros.

There we have it friends!

(Screaming)

Werewolf Attack!

TottyChoCho!

This video is sponsored by Yulu.

This is Break Free.

Pick the lock to escape!

This is an escape game for kids.

It's for ages 6+ and 2 to 4 players.

Let's take a look at the back of the box.

Let's open it up!

So this is what came in the box.

There are 4 handcuffs.

And then these things go inside the handcuffs– it's the maze.

This one is easy, this one is intermediate and this one is hard.

You take one and put it inside the handcuff and then close it with the lid.

Then you use the key to find your way around the maze.

Who ever can unlock it first is the winner.

These are called victory coins.

They are to keep score.

Another thing that's really cool, these are little mazes right?

But each one is different so there are 12 different mazes.

Guys should we test it out just to see how it works?

Make sure if you are right handed, put it on your left hand.

Oh no, it's too big for Lucy, look!

So you have to pretend you are stuck ok Lulu?

Hold on, we discovered a potential problem here.

This game is for ages 6+ and Sammy is 7, but, look, he can just slip out of this.

How do we make it tighter?

Maybe you guys have to wear sweaters or something.

So if you're eating

a Cornish game hen at some one of those jousting matches in Las Vegas where they

Dorne, House Martell and Rhaegar Targaryen by Prince Oberyn - Game of thrones History - Duration: 4:41.

OBERYN: Twice the Targaryens tried to conquer Dorne with soldiers.

Twice, they failed.

Only when the dragon kings came bearing husbands and wives

did my ancestors relent and agree to join their Seven Kingdoms.

House Martell could have waged war until the end of days,

but how could we resist a peace we could take to bed?

For centuries, the Iron Throne had no more loyal ally than the princes of Dorne.

Since we had never fallen to them, we kept our ancestral title.

Perhaps this is what drew Rhaegar Targaryen to us.

His royal parents had not produced a sister for him to wed,

so he had to look elsewhere for a princess.

And there was only one in Westeros.

Elia of House Martell, my sister.

She was not the most beautiful woman in the world, or even in Dorne,

but, rare for a woman from our land, her flower came with no thorns.

She was kind and clever with a gentle heart.

I loved her. I feared for her. For years, I fended off lesser men from her,

but when Rhaegar came, even I failed.

He was beautiful and the crowned prince of the Seven Kingdoms.

And our mother had worked so hard to secure the match,

how could Elia not accept him?

They were wed and he took her from her home,

from those who loved her and would die for her,

and locked her in his Red Keep, above his sty of a city,

surrounded by false friends.

She bore him a daughter and a son, though each almost cost her her life.

Elia loved Rhaegar. She obeyed him.

And he chose to steal away Lyanna Stark,

a pale Northern girl whose veins ran with ice, like all her people.

Instead of disciplining his faithless son,

King Aerys executed the Starks when they came seeking justice

and ignited a revolt.

I know how the maesters describe the war now, but calling it Robert's Rebellion

does not change what it was, the War of the Usurper.

Dorne sided with the crown, for when we swear oaths, we keep them.

We needed no threats from King Aerys, though he made them anyway,

locking Elia and her children in the Red Keep to ensure our loyalty.

Even in his madness, he knew that no true Dornishman would ever take up arms

against our beloved princess,

and that we would fight to the death for whichever side she was on.

At the Trident, Dorne lost 10,000 men and two princes.

My uncle in the Kingsguard and Elia's gallant husband, Prince Rhaegar,

who was too slow or too arrogant for Robert's warhammer.

As Robert's army marched on King's Landing,

the mad king sent his own wife and child away,

but kept my sister and hers inside.

In his madness, Aerys thought that the Dornish had betrayed his son at the Trident

and was only too happy to welcome his one true friend back into his ranks,

Tywin Lannister.

Lord Tywin's army sacked his friend's city

while Lord Tywin's son murdered the king he'd sworn to protect.

All this could have been forgiven.

War is terrible and men must become terrible to wage it.

But the Lannisters knew that as long as my sister and her children,

Prince Rhaegar's heirs, lived, no usurper could safely sit the throne.

So Lord Tywin's dog, Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain,

made Elia watch as he murdered her daughter

and dashed her infant son's head against a wall.

Then, with her baby's blood still on his hands,

he raped my sister and murdered her.

When Lord Tywin later presented their bodies to Robert Baratheon

wrapped in pretty Lannister cloaks,

I have been told the red colour graciously hid the blood from men's eyes.

The Targaryens talk of fire and blood.

In Dorne, our blood is fire.

If Robert Baratheon had dared set foot in Dorne during his reign,

he would have lost the foot.

And it is not even him we blame for Elia.

The Lannisters think their gold buys them power.

The Lannisters think their Mountain buys them strength.

But if they want peace, they cannot buy it with mountains of gold

or one mountain of steel.

They must pay in blood.

World of Warships - Game Update 0.6.12 - Duration: 4:37.

Greetings, fellow Captains!

Today I'm going to tell you about Clan Battles,

changes in the smoke screen mechanics, Halloween in World of Warships,

and other new features brought by Update 0.6.12.

Captain, if you haven't joined a clan yet, this is your chance!

The time has come to write your clan's good name

into the history of World of Warships.

Update 0.6.12 now features Clan Battles!

On your way to the top, you'll pass four Leagues:

Squall, Gale, Storm, and Typhoon (the highest one).

The stormier the seas, the more ferocious the battles.

Every victory brings your clan Rating points,

and every defeat takes them away.

These results will affect your clan's place

in the global standoff.

You'll need a team of seven trusted warriors,

Tier X ships, and a desire to win.

By the way,

if you don't have a Tier X ship, that's not a problem.

Only in Clan Battles, Update 0.6.12 offers three of them to rent:

cruiser Zao, destroyer Shimakaze, and battleship Großer Kurfürst.

The best part is that you can rent them for absolutely free.

Three weeks later, the rental time will be over,

and another three high tier ships will arrive.

To learn all the details about Clan Battles and the rental offer,

you can read a dedicated article.

Attention, Captains!

Update 0.6.12 brings changes to the mechanics of smoke screens.

Now, when firing your primary armament through the smoke,

you'll increase the detectability distance for your ship.

And it doesn't matter whether the ship is hiding

inside the smoke or behind it—

the most important thing is that a smoke screen is in sight.

A smoke screen

will bring your ship's detectability range down to a value,

which depends on her size and the caliber of her guns.

A detailed outline of these values is available

in the update's full list of changes.

Important information for owners of Premium cruisers

with a Smoke Generator option!

If you decide that after the changes made to the mechanics of smoke screens,

Mikhail Kutuzov, Belfast, or Perth don't meet your gaming expectations any more,

you'll have six weeks— until Update 0.6.14 is released—

to sell them in Port and receive their full value in doubloons.

But keep in mind that, starting from Update 0.6.12,

Mikhail Kutuzov, Belfast, and Perth will be withdrawn from sale.

The first two ships will be withdrawn for good

while the "Aussie" is expected to return.

Good news to the owners of ships with Hydroacoustic Search

and Surveillance Radar.

The display range of this equipment can now be set up in the minimap.

To do so, simply click the Settings icon above the minimap

and select the required options.

Only those who have known the horrors of the night,

can truly appreciate the dawn.

The sinister Zikasa's are back.

Transylvania is threatened again.

The legendary trio of Igor, Jackal, and Blade

are ready for battle again!

Will you manage to fight off the monsters' attacks

and save Transylvania?

Warriors of Light, accept the challenge and send the monsters

to sleep with the fishes, just like the good old days!

See you in the shadowy world, Captains!

You thought that was it?

You wish!

The quiet haven of Silver Spear Archipelago

is no place to rest.

The Forces of Evil are close, and the despicable Filth is on your heels.

Halloween is never over!

How Video Games are Turning into Movies - Duration: 5:21.

(logo beeping)

(upbeat music)

- God, I don't even know

if I'd consider that the smartest response.

Not the smartest response possible,

I mean, (digital beeping)

but like, sometimes having compassion

is what's smart, you know? (sighing)

Although fighting's cool too.

I mean, you are a cave woman from the future

who hunts robot dinosaurs,

so maybe the fist is the most in-character.

Oh man, I don't know, I don't know.

Tell me this guy's whole backstory again.

Omit no detail. - Dude!

When I said you could help me choose dialogue options

I was just trying to make you feel involved.

Since when do you agonize over decisions in video games?

I remember I asked you which

Mortal Kombat X Online clan I should join

and you just yanked the TV plug out of the wall.

- I think it's the graphics, man.

I mean, most of the games you play,

you're asking me to care about some lizard with a mask on

or some anime bobblehead getting stabbed

by a sheet of construction paper.

- If you are referring to the tragic

assassination of Aerith, then so help me God.

- I wouldn't even know because

I don't even care. (gasping)

And that's why, to people who aren't freaks,

graphics will always matter.

- But Grim Fandango.

But Inside.

But surely Journey.

- Hey, I can yell words at you too.

You know, dangerous mouth.

Loudness, snake pass.

- That last one actually is a game.

- God damn it, the point is, you're so proud

of how video games are this different medium from movies,

except every time I see you play a game

that I actually end up giving a (bleep) about,

it's because the graphics are super good

and it almost looks like a movie.

Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption.

I can only name two because I'm not a huge nerd.

- I could name eight,

but that doesn't make you any less wrong.

By that logic, L.A. Noire should be

the most engrossing game of all time.

That had painstaking facial animations,

to the point that you could tell

when someone was like, lying or hiding an emotion.

You know, acting suspicious.

And yet, spoiler alert, very few people cared.

- How can you say that good graphics

aren't the end goal, when they've been the end goal

of every kind of entertainment in history?

- Explain how?

- Oh I will, because I spend as much time

bettering myself in the real world

as you do bettering characters in virtual worlds.

- Hey, I said explain, not ruin our friendship.

- Sorry, but take any media.

- Norwegian death metal. - Shut up for a second.

Take any visual media, let's start with theater.

You know, back in ancient Greece,

actors would literally hold up

giant masks representing their emotion

because the stadiums were so big, that was the only way

to tell what their character was feeling.

That's why those masks are the drama logo, and that sucked.

That's why we don't do that anymore.

You know, no one's gonna sit here and argue

that's more effective than a close-up in a movie

showing Viola Davis whipping out an Oscar.

- Well, I mean I can argue anything,

but it would just be to defy you.

- Movie started out as like film plays, you know,

or puppet theater, commedia dell'arte (bleep).

And guess what we don't watch anymore?

- Hey, The Artist won Best Picture pretty recently.

- Raise your hand if you saw The Artist.

(groaning)

Reality TV became popular by pretending

to be more real than scripted shows.

Caveman paintings are rad,

but they don't get me more invested

than a Rembrandt portrait, and last but not least,

first wave Norwegian death metal

was marked by chugging, primitive riffs and low growls

that expanded to feature falsetto screaming

and oversized drum kits to add more depth.

- Wow, that true about death metal?

- Probably not, but I win the argument and being classier.

- And snootier and wronger.

What you're basically saying is

that the journey doesn't matter at all,

only the destination.

Like okay, okay, what about when

there's ultra-realistic VR headset movies?

You saying now Jurassic Park is moot?

You really gonna tell me Jurassic Park

is no longer a valid piece of art?

You're gonna sit there with your damn filth mouth

and take a triceratops-size (bleep)

on Jurassic God damn Park?

- No, but if they release JP as a VR movie in 2035

I'm gonna be there opening night, and so will you.

- Too true, too true.

- I'm not fist bumping for that.

- Buster Keaton.

- What about him?

- I don't know, you're just making me feel stupid.

I wanted to catch up.

John Coltrane. - Please stop.

Let's tell this guy to kick rocks.

- Alright, finally a decision.

- You think she was better because she was smart,

because she designed Zero Dawn.

But you miss the point. - Well no,

not really happy with how that worked out.

Should I reload and try again

or you want to play something else?

- Sure, if the facial animation

and voice actor are equally good.

- Cool cool, alright.

Well then let's try Mass Effect: Andromeda.

I just downloaded it.

Oh, and it has the same story deal

where you can make moral choices

and harangue your roommate about it.

You'll love it. - (laughs) Yeah.

- [Video Game Voice] Scott.

- Is my sister okay?

- Sara's fine.

Her vitals are strong,

but the revival procedure was interrupted.

- I don't like the sound of that.

(grumbling)

(upbeat music)
