The old masters left us with quite some good concepts.
Maybe the most useful one is the concept of Vorschlag and Nachschlag, which could be roughly
understood as the commencement and the finish.
Learning how to start is covered everywhere, so let's focus on not only how to finish,
but how to do it in the best way!
When fencing, Lichtenauer and other masters advise us to do everything with the power
of the whole body.
It's essential to understand that a cut or a thrust aren't just done with a mere
extension of our arms.
In order to use the full potential of any action the whole body should cooperate to
get the maximum effect.
Our arms give a cut its reach, speed and strength; but so do also our hips if we rotate it well,
and so does our body if we lean it properly and so do our legs if we stretch them far.
If you want to do a successful finish – the nachschlag, you need to be well practiced
in proper mechanics.
And there is no better way to do the nachschlag than with a Zwerch!
In summary, the zwer is not an extremely complicated cut.
You usually start on the shoulder and then cut with one of the edges towards the opponent
in a horizontal manner.
The hands should lead high to protect the head, the thumb should be below the blade,
both for protection and easier orientation.
In order to cut from one side to the other you just cross or uncross your wrists.
When you do this rapidly it becomes the „lichtenauer helicopter of death".
Signature move of many KDF fencers.
Great thing about zwer is you can strike it almost everywhere.
The Meyer diagram gives us a complete guide how to cut to the four openings, but you usually
don't need to practice more than the high-low-low-high variant.
In the end it's much more useful to adjust the height of the cut according to how your
opponent parries.
I'm always trying to only aim a bit under my opponent's sword so it's almost impossible
for them to parry it last minute.
When you strike a nachschlag always do it with full power of the body - unless you are
faking.
Zwer provides us with the best protection and with a good twist of the hips you can
land a very strong strike with the potential to overcome the opponent's parry.
When you practice don't just do the helicopter but rather try to utilize the whole turning
of the body.
Your hand should be leading and your body following.
Even though the zwer usually aims high practice it with cutting through; don't stop but
rather cut through the whole line, and let your body stop the cut by itself, don't
force stop.
The more you cut or thrust in one flow, without stopping, the more you connect your attacks
through slicing or thrusting, the easier it will be for you to do the next attack.
It's not that much important to be extremely fast.
We need to be resolute, precise, strong and achieve our goal ideally with the first or
the second strike.
A common mistake is cutting to your opponents sword.
Remember – your target is not the sword, but the head!
When cutting a zwer nachschlag hold your hands between the pommel and the cross.
When the pommel is free it will help you reach your target by granting you additional rotation.
Aim the tip or the last third of the blade towards the head, not the middle part of the
sword.
Before cutting around the masters advise us to be „strong on the blade".
Everytime you create pressure on the sword your opponent needs to respond to it.
If you push the sword strongly on their blade before doing the nachschlag you will keep
them occupied so they won't be able to counter.
Creating pressure is the very essence of a successful nachschlag.
So let's sum it up.
The zwer is the best way of performing a nachschlag.
When practiced thouroughly it will grant you not only protection but maybe the fastest
way of cutting around after a successful vorschlag or a first cut.
In order to be successful you need to remember these 3 things: After a good vorschlag continue
to create pressure by pushing the opponent's blade, even a little bit.
Secondly, always strike with the full power of the body, meaning the arms go first, the
rotation helps and so does a little jump or appropriate footwork.
Lastly, always strike with the last part of the blade to the target, not to the sword!
Forget about opponent's parry, if you cross your hands well and push the pommel to the
side, the tip will find it's target even if the parry is done right.
If you do this, your opponent will need to take your strikes seriously and he or she
will need to do an extreme parry which is even better for you if you need to continue
with another strike.
Or, if you can, just lower the strike and hit your opponent below their parry.
Like the old masters say, without proper practice there is no art, so practice well and in every
fashion.
