Salam. Hale shoma? Chetori? I'm a Canadian. Ken Rusk, I live in Toronto and when you walk
into my apartment you'll see artifacts of Iran all around
me and all these have a story attached to them
In July 1971 I arrived in Mehrabad Airport in Tehran with my family
I remember Tehran was very hot even at midnight. From the airport we took a taxi
to a hotel called Semiramis on Avenue Roosevelt close to the US Embassy
We moved toward Iran as I was working for Ontario Hydro in those days
the power system in Iran needed major improvements so Iran had contracts with international
companies to help to modernize the system Ontario Hydro was one of them
when we move to Iran I used my Canon camera to take photos
from all over Iran but I never had a chance to print them so they kind of got
forgotten in my story shortly after we returned to Canada
a few years ago I got to know Ali who was a real estate agent in Toronto and told him
My trip to Iran and the existence of the slide he became very excited about them and
encouraged me to find and give them to him so he could digitize them and make
them available for others to see I also found some items that we brought from
Iran we bought the art that we always had in
our living room prepped ever on 50 years ago they show Mount Damavand a beautiful
mosque and a few camels these are the scenes we could see often in our
everyday life in Iran I like them as they take me back to the times we had
you know I recently found my highway map of the wrong along with lots of travel
pamphlets and all over the country in those days that Shah wanted to promote
tourism in Iran for foreign visitors and there was always plenty of traveling and
information available for us to use after a few days in Tehran we found a
lovely apartment in Dodi a Gucci heft and slowly we've started to make our own
home Darrin was a big city and had a lot to offer Shah had made an and PLAs go
building the tallest building in Tehran were my favorite structures we attended
international exhibitions and we regularly attended the community church
of Tara before moving to Iran we were advised
that many of those things that we take for granted in the West were not
available in Iran for example we shipped electronics and even toilet papering
boxes to Iran but after arriving we realized all these are available some
cheaper than we buy and Kenneth the first car I drove in Iran was a rental
pay con and then I bought my own area the REO was assembly but part coral in
Iran the parts imported from America mortars in Brampton Ontario Canada it
was a nice car Ali also found a by Mary Dallas traffic ticket Allah God in
Tehran let's hope I paid it off I have copies of Tehran general and km which
were always available in English I also discovered about the letters we
exchanged between Iran and Canada I also found the original pamphlet of ours
cooler that was installed on the roof of our apartment building and a few rather
funny photos with my daughter Heather trying to wear a door and my son Kevin
prepending to smoke shisha which you received as a Christmas gift my German
vacuum tube radio will also travel to Iran when we were in Tehran I would
listen to the US air force radio station and radio monocle and sometimes some
local music station I found our square dance badges from Teheran entourage my
wife Lois was a member of the Canadian Women's Club loved everyone
we used to join our American friends in Tehran to attend gatherings were taking
place at the American Embassy in Tehran there were a lot of American families
living in Tehran mostly military families and we knew a few of them
that's how we got invited to some of those parties from my experience most of
the Americans in Iran like to keep their distance from the locals for example if
they had some time for holidays they would fly back to America we on the
other hand would rather take a road trip to different parts of Iran
and explore that diverse and historic country I still have my parents expired
passports but there are on Ian's visas issued on them they traveled to Iran in
spring of 1973 and really enjoyed themselves we traveled to the north and
instead in hotel ramps are really beautiful they're enjoyed the Caspian
Sea clean beaches and the beautiful scenery around Shamu I recently found a
few mementos and travel guides I kept from our trip to beautiful Shiraz my
wife passed away a few years ago my favorite photos from Shiraz is when she
is in front of half-assed whom while a fortune teller is reading her fault
habits and she is listening but can't understand the meaning you were all
enjoying this situation in another folder she was walking on a street in
Shiraz there are people in the street from all walks of life minding their own
business and she was very comfortable walking among them and of course there
was our trip to Persepolis I was very interested about Iran ancient history
and about a few good books our visit there occurred right before the big
international 2500 anniversary ceremony the mohammad reza shah was arranging for
the heads of state from countries around the world so they were preparing the
tent city we went to Tabriz on Nowruz and in Tabriz bazaar some handmade
silver and we got to know mr. bj with an armenian silversmith and who is a very
pleasant man he showed her kids how silver was being me I still have that
silver some of them had the Iranian real the picture of Shah on the train my
beloved coffee table in my living room is made of hammered brass I fell in love
with it because it has all the signs of the zodiac around it I also bought my
tin on copper embossed tray it came from his father he saw them being made with a
lot of hammering noise and bizarre esfahan was really beautiful the mas
bazaar jalsa tun Co sip all the and rude which at that time water
mowing the carpet he always had in my living room and is that Turkoman carpet
which I bought on our trip to Mashhad we went from there to the Turkmen Bazaar
which was very interesting I Bertrand sometimes on my hands and knees with the
merchant to arrive at a price that we both agreed to I still have a catalogue
from Iran air while in Iran we flew with Iran we are traveling to Shiraz on
Easter as during those times Iran air used to fire many places some of far
away is Los Angeles on our way back to Canada as we really wanted to visit
Israel we use Iran air and flew directly from Tehran to Tel Aviv
I also found some Iranian rails in my cat town boxes that we kept when we came
back to Canada one Canadian dollar was worth around 75 reals
I always wanted to visit the Iranian Plaza located in the northern part of
Toronto and recently I was looking for a reliable place to wash my truck I'm a
carpet aisle he suggested that we should rotate through a good carpet store that
he knows most of the Iranian Plaza on the staff are on top today we are
heading there to experience that'll turn her on in Toronto
according to Ali in Toronto is the center of the universe for along the
next batch defroster novel and beyond apparently anything you find in Iran you
will find there they're also going to do some shopping in person supermarkets
maybe have kebab for lunch and see what else we can find there
thanks for coming in my store thank you
it was very much a pleasure for me it's like you it's like like old home almost
gym really thank you it's a treasure that I didn't really know well I'd heard
about it but I didn't know it existed like and and we're going to take some
Barbary with us and Mason lavash we'll see ya yes okay thank you we get nursing
nursing
are you doing I'm well I'm well thanks oh the documents I am beginning to end
oh did you are you welcome well this isn't this is going to replace that
hopefully hopefully that's much herkiman
yes it's a very close to a four by six sides yes it is
yeah and it's strange because turkey man makes that sighs but in Iran they
usually go one meter by one and a half okay
that's why I'd love to yeah yeah now it it has had a repair
I bought it new 50 years ago and I had it in my living room for oh my gosh 30
years okay so it hit it it suffered a little with I had it repaired 20 years
ago and washed and since that that's their personal turtle person down on
Church on Richmond Street yes did you eat the sheep's head they know every
morning is the first thing I was thinking I saw the eyes I saw that in
her store a few days ago and no I know and yet I said I said through alley you
know why does that bother me because here my mother made head cheese from
pig's head yeah always yes so why it's very bad for you high in cholesterol one
upon it's one of those there's you know I did when I sat down here I realized I
sat down right beside the picture of the Shaw we had
that in our living room law as everyone had back then and then this is really
unusual a carpet competing carpet with the Shah and the money to Rio the
Persian mummy yeah it's I have some copies of some some of those bills at
home like in new condition now is that an is fahan pattern is that an is fahan
pattern I thought so well of course yeah it shows
carpets carpets and carpets how does one choose well I know how long chooses I
fell in love with my German and nobody likes all the rights some people only
love Turkey man so they're experts in one field that detail that is so fine oh
yes yes yes and so much has changed I worry and concern the latter have you
been bid for active over there did you see me turn the chef-owner we not both
because we had to stay back I always had my camera which meant I had to stay back
from from ceremony like that I was in the country I used telephoto lens a 100
200 millimeter telephoto lens so I could take a picture like across the street
without someone not knowing but not around the Royal Caravan away well we
learned very quickly to be careful about that sort of thing we were guests of the
country and I knew how quickly you becoming yes but that reason the Jimmy
Carter damage yeah yeah I've got a gold watch are you
at their arbitrary ready now I'm sorry we can go come back oh okay okay yeah
