J: Hi everyone, Jeremy here to get you up to speed
on everything happening around and inside Verizon.
J: We've always been a loyal partner to the military and veterans community.
Supporting them and their families during and after their service is a priority of ours.
Here's Jannina Lopez with an update from a very cool experience that Verizon
helped provide for some of our military customers.
Jannina here in sunny San Diego at Fleet Week, where their mission is to honor
brave men and women in the military. We're here to celebrate these heroes with
Verizon's Salute to Service week. As a thank you from Verizon, we have invited our
customers to join us at the viewing deck for the tailgate & concert,
the Navy vs. Notre Dame game and a family day at the pier, where ice-cream is on us.
J: Thanks Jannina and don't forget about the current promotion we have
for active service and veterans. And now here's Ali with the rundown.
A new start-up called Tap wants to be the Waze of drinking water.
A lot of people are replacing environmentally unfriendly plastic water bottles
for reusable ones but sometimes finding good, clean drinking water can be a challenge.
Enter Tap, a startup using user-generated content and data as a
search engine for water, so you can find a place to fill up your reusable bottle.
Tap also has 34,000 refill stations in 30 countries.
Christie's auction house has sold its first artwork created by artificial intelligence.
The Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for $432,000, far exceeding estimates.
The canvas was created by a machine learning algorithm
that scanned historical artwork before attempting its own masterpiece.
And, researchers have developed a line of small flying drones that can move objects
that are 40 times their weight. The drones only weigh a few ounces and are equipped
with a system of winches, adhesives and microspines that allow the tiny crafts,
to latch onto just about anything. They've been tested to lift small objects,
work together to lift larger objects and even latch on to open a door.
And that's your rundown.
J: Thanks Ali.
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month. And during the month, our Information
Security team held events in Ashburn, Virginia, and Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
They included cyber awareness expos, threat briefings, and even an Escape Room
to test employees' cyber knowledge. If you didn't make an event,
you can always find training on phishing and other topics in the Learning Portal.
Remember, protecting our customers and company from cyber threats is everyone's responsibility.
And, October is also National Disability Employment Awareness Month to
increase understanding about disability employment issues and foster a
more inclusive workforce. Through our recently formed partnership with Employment Horizons,
we're creating jobs for workers to test and refurbish used Fios equipment.
I take this little thing, put it here & I make sure that it lights up.
If it lights up it's good, if it doesn't it's a reject & I put it in separate boxes.
A lot of this stuff prior to Employment Horizons was being scrapped.
The folks here will refurbish them for reuse in our network. There's an immense
cost savings to Verizon. We will also be reducing our environmental
impact by not throwing away these goods.
That's great to see. And a big shout out to the Fios team. J.D. Power ranked Fios the
highest in customer satisfaction for the 6th year in a row.
That will do it for us today. Be sure to follow us on social for everything happening
around & inside Verizon. Until next time, you are up to speed.
