Hi, my name is Chung-un. I'm standing outside the Herald Square in Seoul.
From here, we're traveling more than 360 km to Ulsan, which bills itself as the city of hydrogen.
I'm going to drive the Nexo, a fuel cell vehicle from Hyundai Motor, powered by hydrogen.
The company says Nexo can go 609 km on a single charge,
the longest range in the world for a zero-emission car.
We'll see whether this car shows hydrogen can really be the fuel of the future.
Let's go.
So far, so good.
Now I'm on Gyeongbu Highway, about to leave Seoul Metropolitan City,
and I think I'm the only one driving a fuel cell vehicle.
We're at Yongin Highway Rest Area.
We're going to ask drivers around here what they think about the hydrogen car.
Is this your first time seeing (a hydrogen car)?
Yes, first time. It looks just like other cars.
Environmentally friendly cars like this should proliferate.
(Car beeps, door handle pops out)
Wow, this is amazing.
But what if it runs out of hydrogen while driving?
You must think about how much distance you will drive, in advance.
Hydrogen charging stations would need to become more accessible.
That's right.
Aren't there any portable chargers?
No, there aren't.
Electric vehicles have charging stations in apartment parking lots these days,
and many are on the sides of streets.
But these hydrogen cars don't have that many charging stations, do they?
You're very correct.
Feel it, it's not hot at all.
You know, with an engine, a bonnet heats up.
This is a car without an engine.
So we are not there yet, but we're going to try hands-free cruising.
Set the speed I want to drive, let's see, 110 kph.
Ulsan...
I left Seoul at 2:30 p.m. and now the time is 7:43 p.m.
I drove almost 400 km today, and Nexo still has 145 km to go.
Why is Ulsan trying to cultivate the hydrogen industry?
Ulsan constitutes more than 60% of South Korea's hydrogen production,
and has Hyundai Motor, which is a pioneer in the hydrogen vehicle industry.
By 2030, Ulsan aims to have 67,000 hydrogen cars on the road,
which would be 15% of the total registered automobiles in the city.
As for hydrogen public buses,
the city plans to expand the number to 300, which would be 40% of total bus transportation.
Ulsan will have 60 hydrogen charging stations by 2070.
So this is a hydrogen bus, developed by Hyundai Motor.
It looks just like the other buses that exist today.
Please tell us what this bus means for hydrogen vehicle development.
Ulsan's hydrogen bus is the world's first.
Personal hydrogen vehicles already exist,
but citywide public hydrogen transportation is to be tried in Ulsan for the first time in the world.
The hydrogen bus is a zero-emission vehicle that even purifies the air as it runs.
I would say it is the best vehicle in the world yet.
We have been traveling around for two days,
to see what the future will be like with hydrogen as the primary energy source.
If you have any questions, stay tuned with The Korea Herald.
