Why I Usually Don't Order Drinks at Restaurants - Duration: 5:38.
Hi, it's Alex!
It's been a while since I recorded a new video,
and the main reason for this is that my camera broke,
which is kind of unfortunate.
But the good news is I got a new, spiffier camera,
so hopefully my videos will be higher-quality now.
There have been a lot of kind of like heavy things
going on in the news, and my last,
my last videos have been about pretty heavy topics too,
like political things, things like that,
things related to gender identity.
So I wanted to make like a sort of lighter topic thing,
but something that I think is
kind of serious in its own sense,
and can make an impact in people's lives,
and that's: ordering drinks in a restaurant.
And you may say like: "What?"
"What's the big deal?"
like "Ordering drinks in restaurants?"
I've noticed though that like,
when I go out with people to restaurants, we go out to eat,
a lot of people order drinks in the restuarants,
and I'm not even talking about alcoholic drinks.
People order like soda.
It's a really common thing in America
for people to order soda
when they go out to eat at a restaurant.
And the thing is like, it's REALLY expensive.
Like, a lot of the times in some of these restaurants,
the soda will be as much as two dollars.
And it's almost never less than a dollar.
So, you're spending like a dollar to two dollars
on a glass of soda.
And soda is pretty much empty calories.
There's like not any nutritional benefit in there,
and it's probably having an adverse effect
on most people's health when they drink it.
So like, maybe you're enjoying drinking it,
but you're paying a lot of money,
and you're not really getting a long-term benefit out of it.
And I think people sometimes don't think about
how much buying that soda increases
the amount that they spend when they go out to eat.
Like, a lot of the places I go out to eat are really cheap.
Like I can eat dinner for like $8, $10, $12.
I rarely am gonna spend more than $15 on dinner.
So, and lunch is usually cheaper than that.
So say you're spend $10 to eat.
If you spend $2 to buy a soda,
that's like a 20% increase in what you're paying.
And, at least as far as I'm concerned,
like you're not getting much out of that.
Like, you can just order water.
It's free.
Some places like Chinese restaurants,
a few other restaurants,
you can get tea included for free even.
I love that.
Like when I go to Korean restaurants,
I always get barley tea.
It's almost always included for free.
And it's this really great drink.
It's a lot healthier than drinking soda.
Umm.
I don't know?
And, just to me, it seems like pretty obvious that like
refraining from ordering sodas in restaurants
is one of those little things that you can do, that
maybe it requires a little bit of self-restraint,
because maybe you actually want that soda,
but, if you can exercise that self-restraint,
you'll have more money in your pocket.
And you can either use that money for something else,
or you can do what I do, which is go out to eat more often.
I love going out to eat.
Umm, I do it a lot.
But I tend to do it at relatively cheap places.
And I tend to not spend very much money on it.
Umm, I also wanted to mention alcoholic drinks.
This is also another area where you can exercise restraint.
And, a lot of places, alcoholic drinks are
REALLY REALLY expensive.
Like if I go to the liquor store and I buy a six-pack of beer,
I can buy high-end craft beer,
and the beer is always gonna cost less than $2 a bottle.
A lot of good beer is like about like $1.25 a bottle,
$1.50 a bottle, if you're buying it in a 6-pack or a case.
When you go to a restaurant, though, and you order a beer,
even a beer in a bottle, you might pay
5 or 6 bucks for like a craft beer.
Some places they have these really high-end beers,
and then like, you're paying like 7, 8, 9, 10 bucks
for like a single beer.
I'm like, that's the cost of a pretty fancy six-pack of beer.
And like, when I think about that,
it's like a factor of like 6 or something.
I'm not gonna pay six times as much for something
when I go out to eat.
I tend to only like to buy beer or alcohol when I go out
if I feel like I'm paying for the space,
paying for the ambiance.
So like, if I go to a bar, and I'm sitting there
for a couple hours with my friends, like,
I don't feel bad about spending like
five bucks for a pint of beer,
or like ten bucks for two pints of beer,
if I'm sitting there for a while,
cause I feel like I'm not just paying for the beer,
I'm paying for the space.
If I'm going out to eat, I'm paying for the food.
I don't want to be paying through the nose
for this like small amount of alcohol
that I could be consuming in the privacy of my own home
for a much lower cost.
That's kinda how I think about it.
A lot of people, often like, when I ask them:
"Oh, do you want to go out to eat?"
or "Do you want to do this"?
they're like: ""I don't have any money."
And then the same people, I'll see them
spending a lot of money, like, buying like a glass of wine,
or like a glass of beer, or something,
when they're going out to eat.
And I see people spend like seven or eight bucks
on craft beers and stuff.
And I'm like: "Mmm..."
This is like a choice, you know, like.
And my personal choice.
I like to go out to eat a lot.
And I don't like to buy alcohol unless I'm
specifically paying for the space, you know like,
I'm chillin in a certain place.
Then I feel like I'm supporting the establishment,
it's a kind of a good thing.
I like to support the businesses.
I'm not gonna be just sitting there using their space
and not paying them any money.
Anyway, that's what I want to say.
I hope that this has inspired you to
spend a little bit less money on drinks,
if that's something that you think would benefit your life,
to spend less money on that,
and that you can have a higher quality of life as a result.
Thank you!

I Don't Understand Blood Types, Therefore Aliens - Duration: 26:01.
[Quick note about the similar-looking terms in this video.]
[Terms with capital H (RHD, RHCE) refer to genes. Terms with small h (RhD, RhCE) refer to proteins.]
[The genes' names should also be italicized, but YouTube CCs don't allow it.]
Hello, gnathostomes!
Before we get to the Stupid™, I would like to give a big thank you to Infixfun,
who has been a very, very awesome person and put closed captions on all my videos!
Thanks!
So. Errm. Hmm... What to debunk? What to debunk?
Hey Google, find me something really stupid.
Okay, here is what I found:
If You Belong To This Blood Group, Chances Are You Could Be Having Alien DNA
Yup! That'll do.
So. The following, which I have to stress is real and presented verbatim,
is from a bottomless pit of listicles and clickbait called Troab.
Or Troaap? Throap?
Thrååp?
Throwup? Yea, let's go with that one.
This particular "article" was vomited up by Andrew Alpin,
who appears to be a frequent contributor to the site.
Oh, and if you're wondering how I found this Stupid™,
it was suggested to me by the Google+ trending feature.
And if you use one of Google's other products, and search for "alien blood type",
you'll get a shitload of results.
So. Yeah. Apparently people actually believe this.
Okay, Google, read the Stupid™ for us.
Oh dear fuck.
Zero to dumber than a wet cardboard box in 3.4 seconds.
First of all, that would be a question for human evolution and genetics,
not physiology, it's not the biggest question in any of them,
and I think you meant "unanswered".
Secondly, that not how evolution works.
Humans didn't evolve from rhesus monkeys; or rhesus macaques
to give them their proper name. You share a common ancestor with them.
Now, most people with rhesus negative blood are in fact missing
the rhesus monkey gene; or RHD to give it its proper name.
But so are all the rhesus macaques, because the gene didn't evolve
until after the two lineages split.
It's not named rhesus because of anything to do with evolution;
it's named that because that's the animal the Rh blood group system
was originally discovered in, back in the late 1930s.
Well. Sort of.
It quickly turned out that what was discovered in the macaques
was actually a different blood group system than it's human "equivalent".
But by that time, the name was already in wide use, so it stuck.
But you know what? Let's forget all that and say the system really is
named after the rhesus macaque because humans evolved from it.
How does that make some humans not having it an evolutionary mystery?
No, seriously. How?
How is a species evolving an evolutionary puzzle?
You do realize that there are a lot of genetic differences between humans and macaques, right?
That that's why you and them are different species? Guess how they ended up that way.
That's right: fucking evolution.
Jesus Christ on a blue mountain bike.
It's not unanswered! Humans evolved! It's right there in the question!
You're literally asking "Why, if species evolve, don't they stay the same?".
It's not a theory. It's not even a hypothesis.
It's somewhere around a barely thought-out showerthought
of someone who hasn't their morning coffee yet.
Also, only the R in Rh is supposed to be capitalized.
Wait. Wait wait.
By "Alien DNA" you mean "space aliens" aliens, right?
And not "aliens" as in Mexicans?
Again, yes, most Rh negative people have that blood type because they lack the RHD gene.
Don't worry, I will get back to the how and why of that.
For now, I really want to know how the hell you got from that to alien DNA.
Never mind how that's a complete non sequitur,
how the actual chocolate-coated fuck can missing a gene equal having alien DNA?
They're missing the gene because they lack the part of the DNA where it's "supposed" to be.
It's not pining for the fjords. It's not there! It's gone!
Vanished! Deleted! No longer in existence! Lost to time!
It is an ex-gene!
Within the ABO blood group system, yes, those are by far the most common types.
There are others, but they are rare,
and most are basically versions of either A or B with some caveats.
Thing is, there are also other blood group systems. 36 of them to be exact.
The ABO system is just one of them.
The reason you hear about it the most is because it's the one most likely to cause problems
during blood transfusions and organ transplants, making it the most clinically important.
I mean, that's not not true, but it's also not much of an explanation.
So, let me do it for you. Fair warning, this segment is going to be a big info dump.
So hold onto your pants.
All of your cells have proteins on their surface that they use to communicate
and interact with the rest of you, and sometimes things that aren't you.
Some of them also act as antigens. Antigens are parts of molecules,
usually proteins or complex sugars, that can be recognized by the immune system
and cause it to respond.
What antigens someone has, and what they look is determined by their genes.
Because humans aren't clones, people have different antigens.
Your immune system "knows", for a lack of better term, what your antigens look like,
and has cellular safety mechanisms in place so it doesn't attack them.
Autoimmune diseases are what happens when those mechanisms fail.
Blood types have to do with the antigens on the surface of the cells in your blood;
primarily those on the red blood cells.
The protein characteristics Andrew is talking about are the structure of these antigens.
Each of the 36 blood-type systems deals with one or a group of related blood antigens.
The types refer to what antigens and antibodies someone has.
So if someone is type A, that means they have the A version of the ABO antigen,
but lack B, and likely have antibodies against it.
In most cases, someone's type in the ABO system is determined by what versions,
known as alleles, of the appropriately named ABO gene they have.
A bit confusingly, it's not the protein coded for by ABO that's the antigen.
In fact, that protein stays inside the cell.
You see, a lot of surface and extracellular proteins are glycoproteins,
meaning they have branching chains of different sugars "glued" onto them.
The ABO antigen is one such sugar chain.
The ABO protein's job is to help build this chain by putting a single sugar on a certain part of it.
What sugar is put on determines the blood type.
Acetylgalactosamine gives you type A, while galactose results in type B.
Type O means the ABO protein is either missing or broken, so nothing gets put on.
Type AB just means you have both A and B.
For most genes, you have two copies of it, one on each chromosome in a chromosome pair,
so you can have two different alleles.
On to the star of the video: the Rh blood type system.
It involves two genes: RHD and RHCE.
Each codes for one of two very similar surface proteins found only on red blood cells.
And, unlike in the ABO system, they are the antigens.
There are three antigens: C, D, and E. You can probably guess which one carries which.
The Rh system is the largest of the human blood group systems, with over 50 different types.
Most of them are rare, so we will just stick with six common ones:
small c, d, and e, and big C, D, and E.
The two Cs and Es, are different-looking proteins, just like A and B, but the Ds aren't.
Small d is not an actual antigen, because it's not a protein,
but rather the lack of RhD; it's Rh negative.
When we talk about someone being Rh negative or positive,
we're saying whether or not they have RhD.
The reason we don't usually talk about RhCE, is because it's less clinically relevant.
The immune system is much more likely to have a strong reaction
against a protein it's not used to than to a protein that just looks slightly different.
That was a lot longer than I wanted it to be. Hopefully you got most of it.
Well, it *led* scientists to ask that question. They came from Africa.
We actually have a pretty solid idea of where Rh negative came from.
More on that in a moment. I want to address a couple of smaller points.
Firstly, the "15% of the population" is only true for Europe and North America.
In the rest of world, Rh negative is much rarer.
Secondly, Andrew thinks the protein missing in Rh negative people is the ABO protein.
It might be hard to tell with me interrupting him,
but if you read the whole paragraph, it very much seems like he does.
The headline of this section also helped a lot.
But, um, yeah. No, they're not the same. And RhD and RhCE aren't glycoproteins,
so I can't even be nice and assume he meant they carry the ABO antigen.
Also, not every Rh negative person have completely lost the D antigen,
it's just the most common allele.
To understand where Rh negative came from, and spoilers, it wasn't aliens,
we first need to understand how RhD came about.
RHD and RHCE are members of a larger family of rhesus genes.
A very old family, dating back to at least the common ancestor of all vertebrates.
As I mentioned, rhesus macaques don't have the RHD gene.
But they do have an equivalent of RHCE.
I also mentioned that the two proteins are very similar.
The genes for them share 92% of their coding parts.
They're also right next to each other.
What all of this suggests is that RHD came about as a result of RHCE being duplicated.
It's also a clue to how it was lost again.
Your cells are able to do something called homologous recombination.
I won't get into to the details of it works.
All you need to know is that it's a way to swap similar looking parts of DNA.
The cells mostly use this ability to repair damaged DNA.
It's also used to mix up genes during meiosis;
the type of cell division used to make egg and sperm cells.
The process of homologous recombination isn't perfect. Sometimes things go wrong.
That's how RHD got deleted.
Because the two genes are so similar, the homologous recombination protein
machinery confused two parts on either side of RHD, and so ended up cutting it out.
That's not just speculation. If you compare the DNA sequences,
you can actually see where it was put back together.
Looking around the internet, this "35 000 years ago" pops up a lot.
Usually accompanied by other words explaining how unnamed scientists
think this is when humans got the blood type from either aliens or Neanderthals.
I didn't bother to track down the source, because fuck that.
It doesn't matter where it came from. What matters is that it's wrong.
Now, to be fair, Andrew doesn't actually say that this is how old Rh negative is.
He just says it was around.
Which yes, it would have been, because it's hundreds of thousands years old.
We know this thanks to genetics.
While Rh negative is rare in people from the African part of the world,
as this failed attempt at journalism correctly goes on to say,
there are still some who have it.
Among them, and the larger percentage who are carriers of it,
the most common reason is the exact same deletion mutation
you find in the rest of the world.
It's not nearly as common as in Europe,
where it's responsible for 99% of Rh negative peeps.
It's more like 60%. But it's there.
Including in people who have no non-African ancestors.
If you haven't already worked it out, that means the mutation
must have happened before humans left for the rest of the world.
That happened some 75 000 years ago.
And since the allele is found throughout Africa, it must also have happened
before anyone migrated out of East Africa 2-300 000 years ago.
That's just a tad longer ago than 35 000 years. It's likely even older than that.
The way the DNA around RHD and RHCE is set up is practically begging for a deletion
via homologous recombination to happen.
In fact, it's not at all unlikely that Rh negative was already a thing
when Homo sapiens arrived on the evolutionary scene.
In other words, it must have happened early in or before the evolution of modern humans.
Thanks for agreeing with me for once.
It's not entirely clear why it's so much more common in Europeans.
I found a few different ideas, but from what I read, the current consensus
is that it's probably because of a combination of the founder effect and genetic drift.
Which is another way if saying that it's mostly due to random chance.
The founder effect means that the people who left Africa and became the ancestors of Europeans
just happened to come from a tribe or group where the RHD deletion was prevalent.
Genetic drift happens because which genes are passed onto the next generation is random.
In a small population, genes with little to no selection pressure on them
can disappear or become much more prevalent due to this randomness.
Err, no. You pulled that directly from someone's rectum.
The only two that come close to being real things are the hair and eye colour.
Rh negativity is much more common in blue eyed redheads.
That's not because the RHD has anything to with your colours.
We have a pretty good idea how that actually works.
Rh negative and red hair just happen to be the most common
in the same general population: those of European descent.
You might as well be saying sickle-cell anemia makes you black.
No. Not really.
The only major "mystery" is if the RhD protein actually does anything
and, if so, what that thing is.
Structurally, it looks like an ammonia transporter,
and other proteins in the Rh family do perform that function in the kidneys.
Whether RhD actually works is unclear. The current best guess is that it doesn't.
It's part of a complex with RhCE and another Rh protein, called RhAG.
The complex likely acts as an ammonia transporter, with RhAG doing the actually transporting.
RhD and RhCE are thought to be there for structural reasons.
That hasn't been much of a mystery since the 1940s.
How do you think we figured out to use the "special sterilized solution"?
What he's vaguely referring to is called Rh disease.
It's a subtype a condition called hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, or HDFN for short.
Normally maternal and fetal blood is separated.
However, they can and do get mixed from time to time, especially during childbirth.
In an Rh-negative woman expecting a Rh-positive child, that can be a problem.
The mother's immune system will correctly identify fetal red blood cells as not being hers,
and start producing anti-RhD antibodies.
Those antibodies are able to cross the placenta,
and will start destroying the fetus's red blood cells.
If the reaction is strong enough, that can lead to anemia, and, in severe cases, kill the fetus.
And since the mother has effectively become vaccinated against RhD,
any future Rh-positive unborn children will be at risk too.
Not only that, but the severity tends to increase with each Rh-positive pregnancy.
Since sick and stillborn babies have consistently placed low on Throwup's
"10 things we want" lists, medical professionals got together
and came up with a preventive treatment.
That's the "special sterilized solution" Andrew mentioned.
Bit weird that he felt it was more important to mention that it's sterile
than to explain what's in it, or mention that's it's an injection.
What is in the special solution is anti-RhD antibodies.
The same antibodies responsible for the problem.
Sounds counterintuitive, but it's actually pretty clever.
The dose is low enough, that it won't harm the fetus, but it's high enough
that if any of its red blood cells end up in its mother's blood, they'll be swiftly eliminated,
hopefully before her immune system has a chance to notice them and respond.
No immune response, no problem.
Oh, shit! Argh. It's supposed to be a mystery!
I'm so sorry, guys, forget what I said. No one has any idea how any of it works!
They just randomly injected things until they found something that worked.
So, shh, it's a secret.
Shhhhhh.
No one knows.
I don't know. Why would someone's immune system start attacking their pancreatic beta cells
and give them type 1 diabetes?
That's super weird and mysterious...
Oh wait, I do know.
It's because the human body, including the human immune system, isn't perfect,
but faulty as a result of being the product of a mindless and aimless process
which improves on previous iterations through incremental changes to them.
You know, evolution.
One of the underlying "arguments" of the whole "article" seems to be
a weird reverse version of the old creationist favourite of irreducible complexity.
That it can't be evolution, because it not perfect.
Wait. Have we actually found someone who fits the creationists' idea
of what an "evolutionist" is?
Is- is this what creationists think we think? Is this how they see us?
No wonder they think we're stupid!
That was almost a whole sentence.
I think it's trying to say that Rh disease is evidence for their Stupid™ because
"Isn't weird how a pregnant woman's immune system would attack the fetus?
Must be her alien DNA not matching the human fetus.".
Not only is that functionally equivalent to going "I don't get it, must be aliens.",
it also raises the question of what Andrew thinks about other blood types.
Since HDFN can be caused by maternal antibodies against other antigens than just RhD,
by Andrew's "logic", they must be alien too.
I don't think that was what he was going for, but that's where he's "argument" leads.
Which raises the further question of what the hell the aliens' deal with blood is.
I seriously doubt this can get weirder, but go on.
Well, colour me whatever colour acting as if this is the first time I'm hearing this,
and I'm surprised by it, for entertainment purposes, is.
It did get weirder. And dumber.
No, all alien abductees are not Rh negative; primarily because alien abductions aren't real.
No, it's highly indicative of the possibility that you didn't do terribly well in science class.
Or in writing class. Seriously, did you write this by dictating it to a dyslexic aarkvard?
And naturally that must mean these aliens fucked around with some of our ancestors' DNA
in a way that perfectly resembles a mutation that would likely have happened anyways.
After all, that is the next logical step.
So I'm not going to go into why ancient aliens is more retarded than a sea slug on glue.
That would be whole video in itself.
What I am going to say is that all of the evidence I have ever seen
have either been fakes or misinterpretations.
Also, most of the things you listed are completely irrelevant to this
since they happened way after the deletion mutation you think was alien genetic engineering.
Wait. You do think it was genetic engineering, right? Right?
Please tell me you're not so stupid that you think they did it
by doing it like they do on Discovery Channel.
Or, I guess, in this case it would be the History Channel.
No. We don't need spend time and money looking into an idea
that is not only implausible to begin with, but also goes against what we already know.
And we certainly don't need further investigation to figure out
if missing a section of DNA means you have DNA from aliens,
because that sentence still doesn't make any goddamn sense!
Stick to more obvious topics,
like how it turns petting a wild lion is crap idea, and leave the science alone!

Party politics don't belong at Regional Council - Duration: 7:17.
Good afternoon, everyone.
My name is Laura Ip, and I'm running to represent the people of St. Catharines at Niagara Regional
Council.
I wanted to talk to you about party politics for a minute, because this is a question that
I've been getting on-line and at the door, at events. When people meet me, one of the
questions that they're asking, and I think it's reasonable given the state of our current
Regional Council, is which party I align with, which party I identify with, which party I'm
a member of.
There are a number of different ways that they phrase the question, but it's often,
they're trying to find out if, of course, I'm Conservative or Liberal or NDP or Green.
There are, of course, a number of other parties, but those are the four main parties in provincial
and federal politics in Canada right now.
And I want to talk about that, because there are two, two things related to me as a candidate
that are important to address there.
The first one is that I feel very, very strongly that party politics has no place in City or
Regional council chambers.
There should not be the influence of Conservative ways of thinking or Liberal ways of thinking
or NDP ways of thinking when we're making decisions about road construction projects,
public health, I'm just talking at the Regional level right now, about OW and ODSP, about poverty
reduction strategies, about your water bill, about waste management, any number of things
that are really issues that impact your daily life, that directly impact your daily life,
that directly impact how you get to work, if you can get to work, right, if roads are
under construction or crumbling, that sort of thing, it impacts your ability to get to
work, transit systems, those sorts of things.
So, party politics has no place in those decisions.
Now, that said, of course, as someone who is actively engaged in politics, who pays
a great deal of attention not just to city and regional politics, but of course provincial
and federal politics as well, every election, I find myself trying to decide which party
to vote for, because I don't align with a particular party.
The way that I've been telling people at the door, and this is absolutely the case for
me, is I find it extremely difficult to align with a single party platform, because each
election, when I read the platforms of each of the parties, I find myself going, "oh,
okay this part of your platform is very good, this part of your platform is garbage," {laughs}
and, so, if I was going to align with a political party, I would have to buy into all or at
least most of a party's platform, and I haven't been able to do that.
I've never been able to do that for years, so while most people in the community know
me as being not Conservative, I have in the past voted for all of Liberal, NDP, and Green
candidates in both provincial and federal politics.
But, again, even being known as not Conservative, I don't think that party politics has any
place at Regional Council.
The other thing that I want to say is the group of Regional Councillors that we have
in Council Chambers right now, that are making the decisions that are making many of us in
the community very upset about the way things are going, about, again, I'm going to just
use the word 'corruption,' because that is the correct word for what is happening, many
of them align with the Conservative party. What's important to recognize here is that
that's sort of a, um, I don't know, sort of an accident.
It's not that they are problematic - to put it kindly - it's not that they're problematic
Regional Councillors because they are Conservatives.
Conservatives are not bad people.
It's that they're problematic Regional Councillors because they don't care about the rules, they
don't - really, based on a number of the things that we've seen the last four years - they
don't care about us as taxpayers. They're in it for their own private interests, whatever
those might be, at least that's certainly how it appears, and so it's not about them
being Conservative, it's about a number of them, too many of them, being in league together,
and breaking rules together and making decisions behind closed doors together and having private meetings
and those sorts of things.
So, I wanted to just talk about the party politics issue, because it is understandably
coming up in many venues, and I felt that I needed to address it to a wider, larger
audience than just to individual people on their front porch.
If you have any questions about me or my platform, I encourage you to have a look at my website:
lauraip.ca.
Certainly, don't hesitate to e-mail me: laura@lauraip.ca, and you can find me on Facebook, Twitter,
and Instagram simply by searching: Laura Ip for Regional Council.
And the other thing I wanted to mention, because I'm preparing a number of promotions on social
media right now to remind people of this is that beginning on September 18, every couple
of days, I will be having what I'm calling: Coffee with Laura meetings.
So, while I am out knocking on doors and going to events and those sorts of things, it can
be tricky to have conversations at events about regional politics and, of course, knocking
on doors, the vast majority of you are not home or probably,
you might even be home, and you're wondering, you know, 'who is knocking at my door unexpected,' and so I'm just going
to pretend that I'm not at home, we've all done that, I get it, but so I'm having these Coffee
with Laura meetings so that you can come out and chat with me about regional politics,
about my approach and ideas to Reset the Region.
So, those start on September 18.
You can find all of those events listed on my Facebook page and also in a blog post on
my website.
The blog post is titled: 'Communication is of paramount importance,' and of course they
will also be promoted on Facebook starting around September 15 is when the promotions
start, just to remind people that they're happening.
So, again, on Monday, October 22, 2018, I hope that you will vote to Reset the Region.
Please vote for me - Laura Ip - for Regional Council.
Thank you.

Mollie Tibbetts' Grieving Dad Tells 'Heartless' Donald Trump Jr 'Don't Use Mollie' to Push Racism - - Duration: 5:54.
The father of Mollie Tibbets, a college student who was found dead weeks after disappearing, has spoken out against Donald Trump Jr
and other politicians who are trying to use his daughter's death to push their own racist agendas
In an opinion piece for the Des Moines Register published on Saturday, Rob Tibbetts spoke out against "politicians and pundits" who have "used Mollie's death" as a talking point in ongoing debates about immigration in America, despite his family's emphatic appeals
"They have instead chosen to callously distort and corrupt Mollie's tragic death to advance a cause she vehemently opposed," he wrote
"The act grievously extends the crime that stole Mollie from our family and is, to quote Donald Trump Jr
, 'heartless' and 'despicable.' " A day earlier, Don Jr. had published his own opinion piece in the same publication, where he argued that many Democrat politicians had a "heartless" and "despicable" response to Mollie's murder by asking that people focus "on the 'real problems' of our immigration system, such as the separation of families at our border
" Iowa authorities previously stated that Tibbett's suspected killer, 24-year-old Cristhian Rivera, is an undocumented immigrant
"At her eulogy, I said Mollie was nobody's victim. Nor is she a pawn in others' debate
She may not be able to speak for herself, but I can and will. Please leave us out of your debate," Rob wrote
"The person who is accused of taking Mollie's life is no more a reflection of the Hispanic community as white supremacists are of all white people
" "To suggest otherwise is a lie," he wrote, before sharing that his stepdaughter, whom "Mollie loved so dearly," is Latina, as are her children
Rob added: "To knowingly foment discord amount races is a disgrace to our flag
It incites fear in innocent communities and lends legitimacy to the darkest, most hate-filled corners of the American soul
It is the opposite of leadership. It is the opposite of humanity. It is heartless
It is despicable. It is shameful." In an interview with the Register, which was also published on Saturday, Rob explained that he was inspired to write his own opinion piece after reading what the president's son had written
Following news that Mollie had died, President Donald Trump also invoked the killing in starkly electoral language
"You heard about today with the illegal alien coming in, very sadly, from Mexico and you saw what happened to that incredible, beautiful young woman," he said at a rally
"Should've never happened. … The laws are so bad, the immigration laws are such a disgrace
We're getting it changed, but we have to get more Republicans." In a video posted on his Twitter account, Trump spoke even more directly, referencing his longstanding pledge to erect a southern border wall: "We need the wall
We need our immigration laws changed. We need Republicans to do it, because the Democrats aren't going to do it
" Despite Trump's frequent remarks, statistics cited by the Pew Research Center show immigrants do not commit crimes more often than native-born Americans
Tibbetts, a 20-year-old psychology student at the University of Iowa, was last seen alive the night of July 18, on her regular evening run around her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa
Rivera made his initial court appearance on Wednesday and is set to return on Aug
31. He remains in custody in lieu of $5 million bond. He has not entered a plea but his attorney, Allan Richards, has reiterated that he is innocent until proven guilty and that no evidence has yet been presented in court
"He was just part of the community, an all-American boy working really hard," Richards previously told PEOPLE of Rivera
"Whether or not there was something that happened that was very outrageous, that is a different matter
I have seen no evidence on that."

How to achieve fame and fortune? Don't focus on them. | Renée Taylor - Duration: 5:02.
A lot of people say "Oh, I was going to be an actor, I was going to be a writer, I
was going to be a director.
But I gave it up because I can't take rejection."
Well you'll always have rejection whatever you do.
If you're a plumber you're going to have rejection.
The thing is you love it and that's your passion, and that's your joy, and that's
what you express.
And you don't think about "Are you going to make a lot of money?
Are you going to be famous?"
You don't think about things like that, or it won't happen.
Or if it does, it will be very shallow.
I was asking Lee Strasberg how he liked me on television, and he said he thought that
I wanted to be famous more than I wanted to be an artist.
And I said to him, "Can't you be both?"
And he said "Yes, not in that order."
And I saw that my priorities were not in the right order.
And when your priorities are in order you can achieve everything you want to achieve.
But if your priorities are not in order you won't achieve anything.
So if you're just wanting to be famous as I see young people want to be, or they just
want to be beautiful—they're really sabotaging themselves, because what you want to be is
creative, loving, joyful, expressing yourself.
And the outcome will take care of itself or not.
There never will be a final outcome, and there's no perfection except when you're dead, because
you can never be more dead.
No one can ever say, "if she was only more dead, it would be great."
It's just, it's the journey, getting there.
I think when anybody famous dies you say "My god, she had everything.
She had incredible beauty and talent and sex appeal and fame."
And the pain of not being able to find joy in your life really made me question myself.
And it really made me think about, well what are the important things in life?
It's not looks, it's not fame, it's not diet, it's not money.
Well what is it?
It's love and it's joy and it's creativity.
And it's not getting, "Am I going to get this?"
It's giving, and it's being able to receive.
It's very important to receive.
A lot of people can give, but they can't receive.
When I come out on stage and people start applauding my first reaction is I want to
run.
It's very difficult to stay there.
At the end of the show too, at the curtain call.
It's very difficult for me to just stand there, and I say "No, just receive people's
message to you.
Their appreciation of how much people need to laugh.
And what the point of your play is."
My mother's dream for me was to be famous.
And my dream for me was to write about my life and share it with people.
And that's what I'm doing now, so that's a miracle.
A miracle is when you get much more than what you were expecting.
And so I'm living in a miracle right now.
A meditation that I do before I go onstage, I will share with you: Before I go onstage
I say—I go through my whole life, and you can do it in three minutes—And I say, "help
me choose to be a vessel, to be someone greater than myself and bring joy and forgiveness
and healing and love."
And then I go onstage.

25 BEST Netflix Original Series You Don't Want To Miss - Duration: 11:04.
Since the release and major sensation of House of Cards, Netflix has incrementallyÂ
produced their own original television shows rather than only showing the shows of other
studios.
By doing this, they've reshaped the television landscape, becoming the first company to win
Emmy's for their online-only shows.
Plus, by releasing entire seasons at once, they've practically invented the term binge-watch.Â
But which Netflix television shows are the best?
Well, we've got you covered.
I'm Mike with List25 and Here are 25 Best Netflix Original Series You Don't Want To
Miss.
25.
Dark A mystery about the disappearance of two young
kids and all the weird and bizarre things that happen, this TV show certainly lives
up to its name and then some.
With beautiful cinematography and mind-bending storytelling, this German-based show will
have you riveted.
24.
13 Reasons Why This young adult TV show follows Clay Jensen,
a heartbroken teenager who tries to uncover why his crush, Hannah, took her own life.
It became a controversial target with its handling of the topic of suicide, but the
show has still remained popular with a third season coming down the pike.
23.
Bloodline A family drama centered around a powerful
family and four siblings dealing with the fallout of a horrible act, this tense thriller
will have you scratching your head all the way through to the end.
While the first season is admittedly the best with diminishing returns for season two and
three, it's arguably still worth watching if you haven't given it a chance.
22.
Lost in Space Based on the classic television show of the
same name, this science fiction family drama is about the Robinson family trying to find
a new planet to inhabit, but when disaster strikes, they'll have to adapt to their surroundings.
While it can be a tad corny at times, it certainly has its moments and showcases some fantastic
special effects.
21.
Ozark Starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, this
crime-thriller is about an accountant who gets in deep with the cartel and comes up
with a money laundering plan in the Ozarks to stave off getting killed.
Despite feeling a little too close to Breaking Bad, the writing and performances are top-notch
and will likely keep you enthralled through the whole first season.
20.
The Punisher As far as superhero characters go, The Punisher
hasn't had the greatest portrayal in the movies.
Thankfully, Marvel gets it right in this Netflix TV show.
Make no mistake, this drama isn't for the faint and heart and is dark, grisly, intense,
living up to the comics and then some.
19.
The OA Weird and mind-bending doesn't begin to describe
this Netflix series, and that's what makes it so intriguing.
After a young blind woman goes missing for seven years, she's returned, except now she
calls herself "The OA" and her sight is restored.
While some think her return is a miracle, others think she could be dangerous.
18.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return Based on the cult-classic 90's television
show about a man and two robots who are forced to watch bad movies, this new show continues
that tradition, bringing back the original creator to help produce.
Quirky, quippy, and as smart as ever, if you need a good, light-hearted belly-laugh, then
be sure to put this on your list.
17.
Luke Cage A superhero from Harlem, Luke Cage is totally
indestructible and has superhuman strength after a science experiment goes awry.
While in hiding, he has to battle the corruption of the streets and the local politics while
also trying to figure out his own identity as a crime fighter.
This particular series has solid writing with plenty of cultural subtext to sink your
teeth into.
16.
Big Mouth This cartoon is all about teenagers dealing
with coming-of-age issues.
It's raunchy, it's crude, and it doesn't shy away from uncomfortable topics, but what this
show lacks in subtly, it makes up for in apt commentary on adolescence and puberty in the
modern age.
Oh, and those of you who like potty humor will love it.
15.
Jessica Jones Working in New York City as a private investigator,
this sardonic superhero with super strength struggles endlessly with her own existence
and purpose in the world.
On top of all that, she has a murderous lunatic stalking her every move.
Fans of light-hearted superhero fun will not find it here, but those who want something
a little more grounded should definitely check it out.
14.
G.L.O.W.
About a group of female wrestlers in 80's Los Angeles, this comedy specifically follows
a young, struggling actress trying to make a name for herself by becoming a wrestler.
With great period pieces, silly humor, and wonderful writing, there's no reason not to
put this on your list.
13.
House of Cards As one of the first Netflix original series,
this show was a stalwart program, drawing millions of people in to binge-watch an entire
season in one day.
While today it isn't exactly a perfect show and is somewhat tainted by Kevin Spacey's
recently revealed behavior, it'll likely go down as the show that ushered in the many
Netflix originals we have today.
12.
Orange is the New Black Law-abiding Piper Chapman is sentenced to
a year and a half in jail after trying to smuggle drug money to her ex-girlfriend, and
her life is ultimately transformed because of it.
With almost seven seasons under its belt, this is one of Netflix's veteran shows that
somehow keeps producing quality storytelling.
11.
Daredevil While the original Daredevil movie didn't
turn out so great, this Marvel superhero made a major comeback with this television series,
impressing fans and newcomers alike.
About a blind lawyer who has his other senses superhumanly enhanced and becomes a night-stalking
vigilante, he has to learn how to juggle both without getting caught by his friends, or
worse, his enemies.
10.
Godless Fans of the wild west will want to pay attention.
About outlaw Frank Griffin searching for his ex-protege Roy Goode, he suddenly stumbles
upon La Belle, New Mexico, a mining town inhabited entirely by women.
9.
Altered Carbon A mature and dark science fiction action-thriller
about a future where consciousness is digitized and stored for people to inhabit new bodies
after they die, a prisoner is brought back to solve a mystery and hopefully win his freedom
in the process.
8.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt A silly comedy created by Tina Fey and Robert
Carlock, this TV show is about a young girl rescued from a bomb shelter that housed a
doomsday cult.
Now, she has to acclimate to modern life while being a nanny.
Fans of crazy antics, quirky characters, and Tina Fey's writing will want to see this.
7.
BoJack Horseman About a horse that's a has-been star from
a show called Horsin' Around, this sardonic television show follows him as he lives in
Hollywood and complains about everything especially his inability to get any other form of work.
With brilliant, comedic writing, you'll fall in love with this show in no time.
Also, as a side note, it has one of the best opening title sequences of any show.
6.
Love Created by Judd Apatow, this comedy showcases
two characters dealing with the highs and lows of a relationship and all the embarrassing
and hilarious things that become of them.
It's inciteful, sometimes touching, but most of all, pretty funny.
5.
Narcos This show focuses heavily on notorious Colombian
drug lords, such as Pablo Escobar, the spread of cocaine across the world, and the legal
authorities trying to stop them in a bloody battle.
It centers specifically on a DEA agent sent to Colombia to capture or potentially kill
Escobar.
Gritty, intense, and brutal, this show doesn't mess around, but for those who love crime
dramas, it'll certainly be worth your time.
4.
Master of None Created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang, this
comedy is about a 30-year-old actor trying to make it in New York while also following
his personal life and love relationships.
It's much more grounded than a show like Kimmy Schmidt, tries to highlight a cultural,
relationship, and family issues, and doesn't try so hard to get you to laugh, letting it
play out naturally.
3.
The Crown Focusing on the modern English monarchy, specifically
the young life of Queen Elizabeth II, this drama deftly handles the intermingling of
politics and the personal relationships of the Queen, making it an intriguing watch.
Those who love Downton Abbey, or any historical fiction for that matter, will likely find
something to love here.
2.
Mindhunter A relatively new television series for Netflix,
this disturbing detective drama follows two FBI agents as they investigate the psychology
of murder and interview psychopaths in prison.
It certainly doesn't shy away from the nitty-gritty, and its dark subject matter will likely make
you squirm, but the direction, writing, and characters are all very well-done.
On top of that, six of the episodes are directed by David Fincher.
1.
Stranger Things Arguably one of the hottest shows on Netflix,
this science fiction homage to the 80's is fun, exciting, and mysterious.
It fully understands the time period but also throws in its own flair and creativity in
the process.
Fans of Steven Spielberg and Stephen King will almost certainly love this show.
