Both my wife and I are physiotherapists, and so we had
a business back in the 60s through to the 90s and early 2000s

Absolutely right. Nothing wrong with being blind.
But I was born with very poor sight. - Right.
But lost it all at the age of seven because there was no cure for the infantile glaucoma that I had.
So, fully no sight, whatsoever?
Yes. I'm totally, yes.
So, actually all the things that kind of had in mind
I probably thought that I would like to use in terms of
questions, I had to sort of modify them slightly.
And of course he couldn't see me so he probably thought I looked like Miss Universe.

I didn't realise so I made a special effort.

Well she started her early working life out as a Drag Queen.
But of course, as you know she ended up being a member of parliament.
But in terms of her early life, a drag queen is someone who tends to dress very flamboyantly

is an entertainer.
So you're an entertainer and you're a Drag Queen?
I often call myself a Men-tertainer.

I needed a part-time job and managed to sort of do drag
to fill-in and over the years and I've managed to work
and still keep a drag career going.
it's a very joyful art. I put people at ease and I sort
of take people on a journey of fun and frivolity and enhance the mood.
I often call myself a mood enhancer. - Right.
It's not the sort of thing that your parents want you to grow up to be.
If it brings the bucks in.
So when people see me it's a little bit of a shock.
However, today with you, I'm in a little bit of a shock.
Because you're not shocked. And that's ok.
So now we gotta find another form of communication.

The reason why I wear that is to make my big shoulders look smaller.

For my benefit, what are some of the biggest misconceptions about being blind?
Because they don't react often in the typical way that they're seen as below par
and perhaps even sort of not quite 'all there.' - Right.
Not terribly capable.
So the usual forms of prejudice, jumping to conclusions, stereotyping.
They're the same things that apply to gender - Yep absolutely.
Race. - It actually applies to me in a lot of ways.
just in terms of people kind of pigeon hole me.
And in the stereotypes that go with somebody out there as Samoan
that is an entertainer that dresses flamboyantly.
But if you saw me during my nine-to-five, completely different.
Yeah I need to open my way of thinking,
I would like people to open their way of thinking towards me.
I will always, till the day I die, continue to open my mind
and to work on it, because the minute that you don't work on it
then things creep in and kind of blinker your vision.
We're almost at our destination don't you know.
We are at the Blind Foundation, the visitors entrance.
I normally sneak in the back door where no one can ever see me.
So then I can come out with the element of surprise.
It was so lovely to meet you.
I do hope that you are able to continue spreading joy.
Because that's exactly what the world needs.
It needs a light hearted look at itself
it needs to be able to laugh at itself and - Oh can I have a

name by the way because I have a gorgeous grandchild called Hunter and
I'm heading to EB Games to find him. So I know nothing about him, I've got no idea
what his interests are. Do I surmise that he likes games I was gonna call them video
games. So it sort of shows my age a bit doesn't it. I don't think they do video
games anymore. I've got a stepson. So I can probably try but with the lingo you
know. I can get down with my bad self with the youth of today yeah that's yep
I just said that my kids will never talk to me again if that goes live. I'm presuming
he's got some kind of disability and then I don't know about you but I just
get in that whole, do you talk to them about having a disability - do you not?
And then I think gosh they must get sick of talking about it.
And I'm having a conversation to myself at the moment. I obviously need some
company. I wonder if he's got strong opinions on politics. A lot of younger
people don't really give a damn so we'll see. So nearly there

What my mother's out and she is late out, I tend to wonder where she has been.

So like for me I don't sleep well if I've got big things happening and my
brains racing, I'm thinking like three or four steps ahead kind of stuff and so is
that similar to sometimes how you feel?
In some sense, yeah.
Yeah I can relate to that I think
So are you very creative? Or is that a generalization?
Of course I'm creative! I really like you I love it
Oh is that so? Yeah I think you're pretty cool.
So tell me what the best thing about being autistic is?
I have a photographic memory
Like on the movies? Like you remember everything
you've read and seen?

And I visualize it before my eyes
So if that's the best thing thing about having autism then what's the worst?
Oh I don't see a downside to all this

Well I love individuality and I love people that are a little
different and I think the world would be a boring place if we were all the same
Coz you're deputy prime minister what achievements did you make?
I have done a lot in my life, Hunter
Quite a lot. But I've been in politics now for 13 years
13! Yeah and I'm a mom and I was a very young Mum
I used to be on a benefit and everything
And then I decided to change my life and I went to university and
then I got into politics
Oh is that so? Yeah and I'm proud of the achievements
I have made. Good on you!
My diploma of digital creativity, which was a one-year course

And and also, I was a Bachelorof Creative Technologies - a three year course -
