I'm excited! I'm excited! I'm excited! Guess what?
The Theta V has just been announced by Ricoh and the Insta360 One also was
announced a few days ago. A lot of people have been messaging me on Instagram
saying, "Ben tell me about the Insta360 One, do you have one yet? Tell me all
about it. Should I buy it, should I get the Theta V?" to which I say well, I don't
own either of them. However, since I've had so many questions,
I thought I owe it to you guys to make a video. I've seen enough info on each to
make a pretty confident prediction and I think one of them is definitely going to
be better than the other. You'll know by the end of this video so I want to go
through the specs firstly but then i'm also going to show you footage from both
cameras so you can be the judge. Hopefully this video will give you
enough of an understanding to make some early thoughts before these cameras are
released, about which one you're going to buy if you are considering these cameras.
They're both two very credible 360 camera companies and two of the very
first to ever make a 360 camera so they have been there since the beginning even
though the beginning wasn't that long ago. It was like two years ago but
they've both been there for a while so you know that both of these cameras are
going to deliver. They're going to be amazing in many ways so honestly I can
tell you right now i'm gonna be buying both of them and getting reviews out
ASAP. But from what I've seen so far, there's been some very interesting
features added to both. I want to start with photo resolution and the Insta360
One does 6912 x 3456 photos and that's really good. That's probably above
average for 360 cameras at the moment so that is good in terms of resolution.
Also, shoots raw which is amazing and 360 cameras haven't done it up to this point.
It's been an awesome feature of traditional DSLR photography just gives
you a lot of control of your shadows and your highlights, your color later on
if you overexpose an image it's easier to bring it back to life or If you under
expose it you make it too dark the image is recoverable so that's an awesome
feature. The Theta V will do 5376 x 2688 and this is the same resolution that
they're already working with. They haven't
improved their resolution unfortunately. They have improved the camera in many
other ways, I would say the resolution is the one thing that they
have not improved. Look the resolution has been really good for the
past two years that I've been using the Theta S, it would have been nice for more
resolution. But for social media purposes this is acceptable. Yes, we want more and
we expect more from the next release I'm gonna let this slide for now only
because I think you'll be impressed at some of the other statistics of the
Theta V. Firstly, it has an f2.0 aperture as opposed to the Insta360 One's f2.2. This
means the Theta will be better in low-light for both photo and video, they
both do a 60 second exposure which is excellent means you can basically see in
the dark. You can do light paintings and this is just a really cool feature for
photo nerds like me that want to go out at nighttime and get long exposures and
do fancy tricks and whatnot the Theta V will also allow you to shoot in RAW.
That is another awesome thing for the Theta in my experience so far from
shooting with both brands the Theta has delivered by far the better look, that's
what I look for the most in 360 cameras and I'm going to show you guys a lot of
samples with both photos and videos from both cameras so you can be the judge but
my money is on the Theta in terms of having a better look for both photo and
video with video resolution they're both offering 4k 3840 x 1920 which is
industry standard at the moment. 4k is what basically all cameras need to have
a decent resolution for the viewer on YouTube or wherever you're watching the
360 video so it's good that they're both offering that and they both weren't
offering 4k previously. They were less than 4k and they weren't really
considered brands that produce credible 360 video. Well, there was the Insta360 Pro
from Insta360 but that was only for professionals not really for consumers.
So they both entered the 4k video market which means there's going to be a lot
more competitors now in the 4k space than there was before and these are two of
the best brands. So the battle is really going to be on in terms of 360 video
speaking of video my new favorite feature of 360 cameras which is 6 axis
stabilization is coming to the Insta360 One. I don't think it's
going to come to the Theta V Ricoh have said that it's equipped with a gyro
sensor and they put a few diagrams on their site but it didn't really intimate
that it was going to be 6 axis stabilization. It looked more like it was
going to handle a shaky camera better if you're walking around and moving it it's
not going to be as shaky. Before it's always had good stabilization, I'm sure
they've improved it but it's not 6 axis and 6 axis is the new norm
because it means you can shake the camera in any direction and it's going
to be dead still later on, so unfortunately, I think the Insta360 One
is going to crush the Ricoh in terms of stabilization. Next we have memory and
another win for the Insta360 One is they have memory up to 128 gigabytes if
you add an SD card with the Ricoh brace yourselves because this isn't going to
be good. 19 gigabytes and its built-in you can't
change it. Before they had 8 gigabytes now it's up to 19 but that is really
really disappointing. I hate to say it, I've always loved Ricoh but 19
gigabytes and not having the ability to change it especially given a lot of
people will be buying this camera for the 4k video is very disappointing
because they're going to run out of storage after about 60 minutes of
shooting 4k video. They're going to upload the footage, delete it and then
start again. That's going to be a frustrating part of the workflow if
you're shooting a lot of video with the Theta so unfortunately this is I think a
big error from Ricoh so I know this is going to rule that a lot of people
because I know a lot of my followers like shooting more than 60 minutes of 4k
video, some people are crazy they'll record like 6 hours they're like why
can't a 360 camera record six hours of 4k video I don't understand and they're
going to be more disappointed by the Theta V because it does i'm guessing around 60
minutes which is just not good enough even for me I don't shoot a whole lot of
360 video but I do expect more than 19 gigabytes of storage even 32 I'd be
happy with. Oh, this is gonna be tough I'm still definitely buying the camera but
I'm not going to rely on it for shooting long amounts of 360 video with live
streaming they're both going to stream in 4k which is really cool I think
you'll see from my Garmin Virb review that this isn't really possible yet due
to global internet speeds so don't consider either
of these cameras for streaming in 4k because it's most definitely going to be
choppy and disconnect and there's going to be massive issues with it. So just
forget about neither camera has 4K live streaming. The better camera for
audio is going to be the Theta V it offers spatial audio. It also has a
microphone jack so you can plug in another microphone if you do want to
record from something else. They are also offering their own Ricoh microphone for a
few hundred dollars I think it's pretty expensive but if you do want 360 audio if
that's important to you, they are offering that accessory at a price but
that's one thing that the Insta360 One doesn't have while Ricoh haven't really
said anything about the app they'll be incorporating with the Theta V. Insta 360
have released an amazing app I haven't downloaded it yet but from what I've
seen it's going to be the answer to all of my wildest dreams and fantasies
because it has this feature called free capture where it allows you to look
around the video later on as you're playing it back and then it records what
you have moved it to. For me, I know that's going to be really handy
when I'm recording my vlog in 360 videos. At the moment, the workflow is just
really long and painful and by long I mean it takes like half an hour which is
way too long but I know I'll be able to do this instantly and hopefully save
even more time because the less time you spend editing the more time you can
spend shooting and marketing and on social media. For me those are the
more important things, editing is the least important so you need to find a
workflow that takes up the least amount of time. I think Insta 360
potentially have something big on their hands with their app. Now let's look at
some sample photos that each company has provided on their website and these are
from the Theta V which is looking quite good. I don't think
their testers know how to use the camera in a way that fully shows off what it
can do so I wouldn't be too discouraged by the averageness of these two photos.
When I zoom in, I can see quite a bit of softness and because they've shot in
strong mixed lighting I can see chromatic aberration everywhere but you
know what that's okay. I don't care that much about CA to me from these examples
so far the Theta V is looking like a great social media camera.
I don't know if I'd really use it for anything more professional maybe if you
utilize the inbuilt HDR which I'm assuming it has like the last one did.
You could do something a bit more professional but just with that
resolution you're probably going to look at other options now that we have so
many others with that said I do rate the dynamic range and the look is quite good.
Now for Insta 360 samples and the first thing I noticed was the seam line
was very obvious there, don't know if that's going to be a big issue or if
it's just the way the camera was placed. I'll have to test it out when I get it.
Otherwise, this photo is looking pretty good decent amount of resolution not a
massive amount but enough again for social media. Probably not professional
use, it does look decent at nighttime there is a bit of grain and a bit of
softness but I'm really impressed at the colors. I can see in this image there's
lots of mood all around and it's not too blown out at the highlights. This is
looking good again with this third sample I'm seeing a big stitching issue
underneath the camera. This tells me that stitching underneath the camera could
potentially be an issue but again it could just be an awkwardly placed camera.
In this specific situation, aside from the stitching I don't mind this image at
all. Now here's a sample video from the Theta V and I know what you're thinking.
Wow, these guys are having so much fun I wish I could have that much fun. Well you
can, if you go onto the Ricoh YouTube channel and look at this video because
it's looking pretty decent it's looking up to the standard of basically any 4k
360 camera which is good when you zoom in it's going to be really soft but this
is a vast improvement upon the Theta S video. Insta 360 have posted a bunch of
samples from extreme sports across their social media channels and it's just
important to remember that every single 360 camera is going to look good in the
context of extreme sports. Aside from that, the image quality is
looking pretty decent I'm not seeing a whole lot of sharpness but I am enjoying
the depth and the colors that this video is showing and it's more than acceptable
for a camera that does so many things. Finally, we have the price which in my
experience from reviewing so many cameras is ultimately the number one
deciding factor of whether someone will buy a 360 camera or not. The Insta 360 is
far cheaper $299 retail whereas the Theta V will be $429. Look I'm
going to buy both of them and I'm going to review them in depth and I do want to
acknowledge that this is a prediction video and not an actual comparison so
you should definitely stay tuned for my actual comparison. However, at this point
in time I would say the Insta 360 One seems like the logical choice right now.
Definitely stay tuned, subscribe if you want to find out about what they're
actually like and once I really put them to the test in a wide variety of
situations I think the equation might change quite significantly but for now I
can confidently say the Insta 360 One is the camera worth considering right now. If
you're a die-hard Theta nerd like me I think you still won't be disappointed if
you do want to buy the Theta V because it will deliver in so many different
areas probably not as many as the Insta 360 One and at a higher price point so it's
totally up to you. Guys, one crucial factor to point out is that the Theta V
will be compatible across Iphone and Android whereas the Insta 360 One at the
moment it's only for iPhone. I did read on their Facebook group that they are
working on an Android version and it will be ready around the end of the year.
But if you are an Android user you're not going to be able to use this camera
with your phone. There might be a workaround where you can shoot blindly
with it and then import the footage to your computer. But, if you do own an
Android unfortunately the One is not going to be the camera for you. It's very
likely they'll release the Insta360 Two, (that's what I'm going to call it) at
the end of the year. But yeah, it clips into your phone the Insta 360 One and it's
got the Lightning port. There is no lightning port on any Android phones so
if you're an Android user then this battle is over already. The Theta V is
the camera for you for now unless you want to wait until the end of the year.
If you have any questions definitely let me know. I'm really keen to see what these
cameras are like. I know by the time 2017 is over these two cameras will be looked
upon as two of the better cameras of the year so it is definitely worth
considering both of them and maybe even waiting for more reviews to come out and
just more evidence of what each of them can do. Stay tuned for that subscribe
definitely, check us out on Instagram as well my handle is
@BenClaremont i'm on YouTube, Facebook as well
facebook.com/Lifein360photo I really can't wait to shoot a shitload of
content with both cameras and really put them to the test to see which one is
better. I'll put a link to both of these cameras down in the description at the
moment it is listed on Amazon although it's not shipping until the 5th of
September and the Ricoh Theta camera isn't available for sale yet but there
is info on their website so I'll put a link to that down in the description.
Definitely check them out if you are considering both of these cameras.
Alright guys until next time keep capturing your world in 360 this has
been Ben from Life in 360 and I will see you in the next video. Can I just point
out one more thing how good other names Theta V and Insta360 One compared to
Xiaomi Mijia Mi Sphere and Garmin Virb. So much better!
