Legacy Land - Duration: 1:34.

[MUSIC]

Haberfield and Ashfield residents have been through hell.

Noise, disruption and drilling because of the Westconnex construction.

The last thing they need is after all this is finished to wake up and find towers of

apartment blocks on their back fence.

NSW Labor is making a commitment to hand over land that is no longer required at the end

of construction.

That means that large parcels of land like this at the end of Northcote Street and in

Homebush, the area I represent, will be given back to the community.

They will not be sold to developers.

It's really important that councils have the opportunity to provide for their communities.

They know exactly what their communities want.

So I'm really pleased that NSW Labor has committed to return all of this land to the community

through the councils.

We know in the inner west, open space is at an absolute premium. We need more space

for our kids to run around, to play sport, for our families to be together.

So we guarantee that that land will be returned for our community use.

How to work in land management - Jill's Story - Duration: 3:02.

'I'm Jill Vella.

I'm a Deer Farmer from Koonwarra in South Gippsland.

I work for the South Gippsland Landcare Network as Network Coordinator'.

'South Gippsland is known for its farming'.

I am pretty into food; to get food you need to be a farmer or a grower, and it's a fundamental

human thing – making food.

'And when you are farming, you are custodians of your soil.

Because if you don't look after it, you can't grow grass, and if you can't grow

grass, you can't feed your animals or grow crops.

'It harps back to the stuff I did at Chisholm, like microbiology.

When you start looking down at this micro-world, you see that's its fundamental to us.

We wouldn't exist if it weren't for microbes'.

The soil wouldn't function if it wasn't for microbes.

'Because it was a technical education, it was fairly practical.

Everything I did whist I was studying has a real life application.

They (Chisholm) were very good at covering things they expected that their students would

do.'

I've been working for Landcare for quite a while now.

Landcare used to be about trees.

It started out with planting trees on farms.

It's become so much more than that now, more like a holistic Landcare management organisation.

We moved into farming sustainably, and a big part of that was soil health.

We've got Landcare programs where we investigate soil health.

We work with farmers to trial things, see what's working on their farms and share

it with other farmers.'

'I'm totally into sustainable agriculture.

. I can't shut-up when I start talking about it.

I love it.'

'I really like working with land holders.

I really like that connection.

I like talking to them.

I like helping them on the journey that I've been on.

And perhaps sharing the journey that I've been on as someone that's new to farming,

and not to be modest is actually quite good at it.

'There are certainly career paths available for people who study natural resource management.

It doesn't matter how you do it, if you come from a testing point of view like I have,

or you've studied agriculture or sustainable agriculture, people will always need food.

The work that we do with farmers is very much a part of that – doing it sustainably, doing

it efficiently, making more of a lesser are' 'It's one of those career paths that isn't

going to go away' 'I suppose it's connection to land without

sounding soppy or silly, but I really love here.

This is where I want to be when I'm away and I dream of home.

This is my place in the World, and If I can maintain and improve it, I'm absolutely

dead happy'.
