Youtube daily make Apr 1 2017

Hi, welcome to Electrical Projects channel,

in today's video I'll show you how to make very simple water level alarm using just a few components,

But First, let me show you how this alarm works, And then I'll show you how to build it.

As you can see, Sensor of this device doesn't have any moving parts, and therefore this device will be very reliable.

Now I'll show you how to build this device.

Here is the schematic, and let's start soldering.

First I am going to solder 1 Mega Ohm resistor between gate and source.

Now, when it is done, let's solder the negative wire to the source,

and after that, let's solder minus pin of the buzzer to the drain pin of the MOSFET transistor.

And when it's done, let's solder the positive wire to the plus of the buzzer, and this device is almost ready,

now we need to solder two wires that will go to a water sensor.

First wire we need to solder to the gate of the MOSFET transistor and second to the positive wire.

Now this device is ready and we can connect it to a power source,

I am going to use 12 Volt battery for powering this device.

Now when you touch the wires this device makes noise.

Also, this device will make noise if you put the wires into the water.

And if you want you can solder two electrodes to the wires, and call it "the water sensor"

And now let's see the final test.

And That is all for today, like this video if it was interesting,

And If you want to see more projects then Subscribe to my channel.

and Thanks for Watching!

How to Make a Duct Tape Messenger Bag - Part 4 - Sophie's World - Duration: 7:21.

Hi, I'm Sophie and welcome to my world

today we're going to finish up our

messenger bag this is step four of finishing

up our incredibly cute messenger bag

last time we made the flap and we added

the strap now all we're going to do is

embellished now basically what I'm

teaching you today is just embellishing

the edges and that's going to add a

little extra strength and it's also

going to make it look pretty for the

project you will meet the messenger bag

embellishment pape a work surface

scissors ruler exacto knife now you

should also know if you really want to

go to town and embellish your messenger

bag that you could use duct tape

stickers and if you haven't seen my duct

tape sticker tutorial just check it out

there's a link down below what we're

going to be doing for our edging is

we're just going to be using a different

color of tape an embellishment tape

this is a fun pattern this is one of

those patterns i have to tell you the

Dollar Tree has incredible pattern tapes

now the problem with them is that they

don't stay in style very long they are

like literally in and out so now what

I'm doing here I should show you from

this way is i'm actually using my bag as

measuring so there we go

and i'm going to cut it right right

there and I'm gonna make a bunch of

these little strips here

the one thing i will say about the

dollar tree tape though is that their

tape is a little stickier and so it it

has a tendency to stick to these a

little bit more see how it sticks i'm going to cut

these strips into half inch strips and

what I really like about these mats is

that they have these little lines little

dots you can line it up so you can

measure without using a ruler but if

you don't have a ruler of course

if you don't have one of these use a ruler

okay I'm gonna pull

this little piece up here and what I'm

going to do is just come to my corner

right at the corner and I'm doing half

on half off so that I can take my pretty

and wrap it over the edge now it's going

to give it another little layer of tape

on that seam and that's important

just to give it some strength but it's

also going to make it look pretty

let's repeat on the other side again

just take it right to the edge there

take it on down the side you're half on

half off here and just fold that over

nice and neat if you get a little teeny bit

of extra sometimes that happens you can

just snip off with your scissors it's why it's

always good to have a pair of scissors

flip it over

half on half off ok and the last one now

this is the time too that you might

want to come back and add a second piece

of purple here or you might want to just

put a strip of embellishment right

across the front here let me get that out of

the way what's kind of fun with this is if

you're going to do a nice big strip like

this all you have to do is lay it on

top ooh...don't pull it up lay it on

top of your fabric i'm going to lay it

right along the edge there

why did I pick it up because it was a

little crooked and I should've just left

it to tell you the truth but

then you just flip this over

super sticky today for some reason

flip it over and seal it on the back and if

you haven't given yourself quite enough

you can always come back and

put another piece over top

it's up to you how you embellish you

know I i have a tendency to be pretty

simple in my design but if I had my

sister Freda here i'm sure that she would

make the most amazing stripes and

patterns and whenever I've done workshops

with kids they do the most amazing stuff

so i am just going to show you the

basics here but you should feel free to

go to town like i said if you wanted

to make your initials on here you could

use the duct tape sticker tutorial to

put your name on here initials on here

you might want to put a stripe on your

strap if you are going to put a stripe

on your strap i would suggest doing it

before you attach it to the bag just

because it's going to be easier

you might want to go to town and put

jewels, rhinestones, buttons whatever you

want on this but the main thing about

your bag is that it is set and ready and

the only other thing I wanted to show

you that I like to take my corners and

just trim them just a little bit just

to round them just a little bit but

they're not quite the sharp but there

you have it a messenger bag and this is

perfect this is a perfect size for my ipad

which has become like my third limb I

have to have my iPad with me all the

time now so perfect for my ipad perfect

for all the other little things that I

need to carry around now remember you

can make all the different sizes there's

a tiny little one for your iphone

there's a medium-sized one there is a

next medium-sized one which is a little

bit bigger and then of course don't

forget if you haven't seen it

the giant's mongo bag and again all these

sizes are done in exactly the same way

the only thing that you need to do is

use bigger or smaller fabrics and all of

those sizes are on my website

www.sophie-world.com for more great

ideas check us out

sophie-world.com and you too can be toting

around your messenger bag

How to make a simple paper flower centre/ DIY paper flower / paper flower tutorial - Duration: 5:23.

you need 4 paper pieces in size approx 2 x 8''

a hot glue gun

and a pair of fringe scissors

there is no any specific length of paper needed though

take 2 pieces of paper

and fold in half

press

cut a fringe on the folded side

NOT on open side)

leave approx 1 cm / 1/2'' till the edge of open side

cut all other paper pieces

you can use regular scissors too, but 4 blades ones will make this job faster :)

I use Martha Stewart brand

now open folded papers and turn them inside out

do not press much at this step, make it gentle

look how soft and neat edge looks now

now roll fringe gluing it as you go

fix the end properly

add the 2nd fringe

and roll again

this is a knob made with just 2 pieces of 8'' long paper

fringe #3

and #4

4 pieces of 21 cm / 8'' long paper form this size (and look) flower centre

now you can 'fluff' your mini centre

and double fix all layers of paper together applying a bit of hot glue at the bottom of it

That's it!

EASY!

How to make a Kratky herb garden - Duration: 11:46.

Hi this is Peter Stanley, welcome to my channel.

Today I'm going to show you how to make a simple

herb garden

using the Kratky method

Basically it's a non-circulating hydroponic method

you don't need any air stones or anything

This is what I'm going to use

It's about a four and a half gallon

and I like this because the lid

is raised so I can get more

head space to, so I can actually use more solution

but to show this on a micro scale

this is a lemon balm

in a

bottle with nutrient solution

this

this is the sponge material. I started the seeds

directly in this

filled the solution up till it came to about here

and the rest wicked up via capillary action

so the seeds sprouted in this

and this has been growing, so I'm going to

transfer, I've got a few of these

some Catnip

there's a little Rosemary

got some White Sage

this is regular Sage

it's in a, all of these are Kratky systems

and I've got a couple

Basil's that are in AeroGardens

but they could've been started the same way

so I'm going to do eight plants

and I'm going to use these AeroGarden

baskets, just like I did

with these and

I've found that a 1.5 inch hole saw drills a perfect size hole

for one of these baskets

and

but don't limit yourself if you don't have these

if you have 2 inch net pots

3 inch net pots

you can make any of these work with

the grow sponges

you can use the AeroGarden grow sponges

I like these bio dome sponges from Park Seed

they're basically the same thing but they

they're way cheaper and they're shaped

a little differently

but they

fit in these just fine

but you could also

fit some in one of these and just fill

around with some clay pebbles or

coco chunks or something

you could cut one down and stick it in a 2 inch net pot

or you could even use rock wool

if you didn't have these or you could use rapid rooter plugs, you could cut those

so just

follow more the principles of what I'm doing if you don't have

the exact same thing, just improvise with what you

have already or

what you can most easily acquire

I like

these just because they're convenient

they work really well, and you can buy these separately

without having to have an AeroGarden

what I'm going to first do is

just take an old one

and I'm just going to draw out where I'm going to place my holes

so I'll do that with a Sharpee

so I want to put

three on the outside and

two on the inside that should give me eight.

just kind of eyeballing getting as close as I can

try to space them out as much as you can so they have room

when they grow

and I'll probably not keep them in this system

forever, it's kind of a

something to get through until plant out time and

I'll probably move them to something bigger

later

if you've watched my lettuce

kratky video it's pretty much the same

principles I'm just growing herbs

so that's kind of

what I've got

so let me go ahead and drill my holes

and

for the hydroponic solution I've got some premixed

It's Master Blend mixed with

Magnesium Sulfate and Calcium Nitrate

and it's kind of a weaker solution that I would normally use

any kind of water soluble nutrient solution that you already have

or that you can get cheaper or easier than this

will work fine too

just maybe mix it a little less than full strength

anyway I'm going to go ahead and drill these holes

I'll start in forward direction

until the

until the center piece goes through

and then I'll switch it to reverse

it just makes it easier and cuts a cleaner hole in plastic

so anyway I'll go ahead and drill these out

and I'll show on the first one kind of what I'm talking about

this is in a forward direction

that's through, and I'll just switch it to reverse

see the hole and see how that

fits in there just right

so I'll go ahead and drill the rest of these out

alright, that's how those look

and also if you haven't used Kratky method

there's a lot of information online. So it starts out

with seeds or even a transplant

you wick it up via capillary action

from the solution that's touching the sponge

and the roots will grow down. These haven't really

there's a few coming out but

the roots start to grow down into the solution and use it up

the roots are hanging above the solution in the moist air layer

between the lid and the top of the nutrient solution

will start doing all the air exchange

so that's how the plant primarily gets its oxygen

through the roots, and the roots that are in the solution

do all the feeding

so if you

ideally you'd have a system with enough solution to carry

the plant to maturity

to harvest

but if you're using smaller systems you have to add some back in

and there's different ways to do that but if you're just

pouring it back in, make sure not to add too much or you'll drown those air roots

so if you see that your plant starts to droop

after you've added some

you probably filled too much, pour some of it back out

so just be aware of that

so anyway

let me

get this cleaned up and I'll get the

this into position where I'll put it and

fill with solution and add the plants

I'll be right back

I'm going to keep it here

on this wire rack under two t-8 shop lights

I'm going to go ahead and pour in my nutrient solution

I went ahead and took tape and

labeled where I'm going to put everything

and I want to go ahead and

snap this on so I can check the depth with an empty net basket

okay, that's about right

so I'll go ahead and add the ones I've got

here, Catnip

White Sage

Rosemary

Lemon Balm

regular Sage

Cinnamon Basil

and I need to get some

net baskets for these other two, I'll be right back

these I had in my AeroGarden Sprout

this one, Mugwort, actually fell out, fell on top of itself

so hopefully this didn't get damaged, but I think it'll be alright

goes there

and this is my Italian Basil

kind of stick these in the back because I know they'll grow faster

and if I need to rearrange I can do that

so anyway that's

that and

so today is March 10th

I'll do updates on this for a few weeks before I post the video

to see how it does

one thing with light proofing I probably

should have done something with the lid

maybe use a plastic

spray paint and painted black underneath

but with just being shop lights

I'm not sure that it'll actually penetrate

enough for this to be a concern as far as growing algae

but I would definitely would need to do something if it was under a stronger light or going outside.

I will follow up soon with progress updates

okay, here's the herb garden 19 days later

this is, so this was started on the 10th and

this system was started on the 10th. It's the 29th now.

The ones in the back are growing a lot faster, we've got

the Catnip here

it's really nice

this is the Cinnamon Basil

and the Italian Basil

a little bit taller

this is my Sage

it's just the regular

sage

it was flopping over a little bit so I

made a little

it's, kind of got it in the little hole in the cothespin

I could probably adjust it a little more but it's

keeping it more upright that what it was

the ones in the foreground

aren't growing quite as fast but have actually done a lot in the last week or so

this is the Lemon Balm

Mugwort

it's actually done quite a bit in the last week

and the Rosemary is

the smallest but it is actually

progressed quite a bit as well

so I think it's starting to take off

starting to get the roots going and all

I'll take a quick peek at these roots

yeah, it's looking really good

quite a bit of solution left in there as well

but yeah, those look great

so yeah, that's real easy to start

maintain and really

once you get it going you just have to

top and prune occasionally

harvest, whatever you want

some consideration should be given to the types of plants you grow together

as far as the growth rates

see these I'm having to raise

lights to accommodate the taller ones

and that means less light for these smaller ones

so that's something to consider

anyway, hope you liked that

thank you for watching, and please like, comment and subscribe

How to Make Baba Ganoush Eggplant Dip - Duration: 6:07.

Hey! Thanks for tuning into Better Done Yourself!

Tonight, I'm making baba ghanoush.

baba ghanoush is a super easy

dish to make. it's just a couple of

roasted eggplants and a little tahini

and some lemon juice and a couple of

spices. stay tuned i'll show you

how to make it and you can enjoy this!

it's just a it's an eggplant dip.

what can I say? try you'll love it.

stay tuned! first step in the baba

ghanoush it's just to poke a couple of

holes in the skin we're going to roast

this for an hour so we would just want

to make sure these things don't explode

in the oven and we lose all our lovely

fruit okay into the oven with these

what's the ovens preheated at 350 you

can go ahead and put the eggplants in

we're going to cook those for about an

hour all right it's been a little over

an hour guess we can take these out

there definitely cooked now you'll be a

lot happier if you pull these guys what

I like to do is just take them you can

see how tender they are get them in a

bowl and then just throw it later a

cling wrap over them and what this will

do is basically just steam the skins off

of them it'll make it so that one less

these are cool it'll be super easy to

get the flesh out of the out of those

purple skins all right once the eggplant

is cooled off you can see the plastic

starting to suck into the bowl here you

can tell us to cool off pour off all

this liquid and then I'm going to want

to extract all of the flesh from these

eggplant

still a little hot but I'm hungry I want

my baba ghanoush you can drive it Eggman

out a little bit just put set it into a

colander and let some of the the juices

drain out of it once your eggplant is

cooled and drained you can add the

eggplant you can see I've got quite a

bit more liquid off the bottom of it but

then from there you're just going to add

your flavorings to taste I've got a

little bit of sumac is nice is a little

bit of a kind of a lemony flavor very

common in Middle Eastern dishes cumin

again just a quarter of a teaspoon not a

lot I probably did a teaspoon of sumac

quarter teaspoon of cumin for your

tahini look for look for something that

actually comes from the Middle East look

for something that I mean you can find a

lot of different brands this appears to

come from the Middle East I'm going to

go two tablespoons juice of half a lemon

this is a big lemon oh my goodness about

a tablespoon of juice there and then two

or three tablespoons of olive oil use a

whisk and you can mash the eggplant and

incorporate all those ingredients i'm

going to add up that half a teaspoon of

salt will taste this and we'll see if

probably have to add a little bit more

but that's a good start for it a lot of

people will make this they'll put it in

the blender and just mash the crap out

of it and it just turns into it just

this kind of beige paste i think i like

it like this i like it with the strands

i like it with the little bit of fiber

in it and makes for a nicer presentation

but mash this together stir this

together and then expand that with the

taste see if you want more lemon juice

more oil the oil is a counter effect to

the bitterness of the eggplant eggplant

by nature is just bitter when you're

cooking and you need to balance out

bitterness add oil oil balances

bitterness and takes away the bitterness

put a piece of film over this and just

let this sit for about an hour and let

the those flavors mouth let the the

sumac and the cumin bloom a little bit

and let those flavors come out and don't

refrigerate this this you're going to

eat this in a couple of minutes anyway

but this is best served at room

temperature a lot of people will tell

you oh it needs to be refrigerated it

needs to be you know chilled no I

disagree this is best served warm at

room temperature and you're really going

to get the best flavor out of this so

cut up some pita bread maybe some pita

chips something like that some little

carrot sticks or something like that and

this is baba ghanoush baba ghanoush is

Arabic for pampered papa so I the the

Arabs would you know that roast their

eggplants and

and mix it up with some nice flavors

like this and serve it to their fathers

and and and taking other father's this

way so i can appreciate this thanks for

watching you guys enjoy

Revhead | How to make a S@#T hot drag car - Duration: 3:16.

in this video we're going to teach you

how to make this really cool looking hot rod in Revhead

Junior Senior

This will work for any car

First get yourself a newspaper and find a 4x4

Select the 4x4 from your parking lot.

Fix and remove all suspension parts including rims from the back.

Be sure to do the same for both sides of the rear.

Now get rid of that old 4x4 and put it in the parking lot.

and grab the car you wish to make a hot rod.

Once in the garage, jack that car right up and rip of the suspension.

Once you have the suspension removed,

just put on the 4x4 suspension and choose which tires to use.

As you can see, I've gone for a set of 20 inch rims with drag tires on.

but youcan put whatever tires you want on there. Even off-road tires.

To add some extra effect you can add the Eura II engine with a massive big supercharger on it.

How To Make Better PowerPoint Videos Using SmartArt - Duration: 8:50.

Hey, it's mike from TeachingWithVideo.com

The place to go to learn how to use

the power of video to engage persuade

and educate your audience. And in this

video, I'm going to show you how to make

better use of PowerPoint when creating

your instructional or educational videos.

You see, unfortunately, so many PowerPoint-

based videos look like this: narration over slide after

slide, crammed with bullet point, after bullet point.

Not terribly engaging, or effective as a teaching tool.

So, how do we fix this? How do we make

bullet points compelling? Well, by taking

advantage of one of PowerPoint's most

convenient, yet underused features. Let's

hop into PowerPoint and I'll show you

what I mean. So, here we are in PowerPoint.

So, we're going to take this typical

PowerPoint slide with a title and bullet points, and

turn it into something more visually and mentally engaging.

And to do that, we're going to select these

bullet points, and then we're going to go up to

the ribbon, and under the Paragraph

section, we're going to go to Convert to

SmartArt. Now, if you hover over the

button, you'll get this pop-up that says:

"SmartArt is a way for you to

communicate information visually rather

than with just text." So, we click the down

arrow, and we get this selection of diagrams.

Now, if you hover over a diagram, you get

a live preview of how your bullet points

will be transformed. These diagrams

represent different types of

relationships between the bullet points,

or the elements of your content. Now, if

you select more SmartArt graphics down

here, you'll get the entire library of

SmartArt diagrams. The diagrams are

grouped into different categories. So, you

have the List category, which you can use

to display grouped, or related, or

non sequential information. There is Process,

which you can use to show sequential

steps. Cycle, which you can use to show a

continuing sequence of stages, or

relationships to a central idea, like

this one, right here, which is pretty obvious.

And so on down the list. When you select

a graphic, you get this handy suggestion

of how to use it in this pane on the

right, here. Now, for our example, I'm going

to select the Matrix Category because I

think that best fits. And I'm just going

to choose the Basic Matrix. And our

bullet point text is transformed into a

much more visually engaging diagram. But

you don't have to settle for the default

diagram. SmartArt graphics are highly

customizable. If we select our SmartArt

diagram, you'll see we get this SmartArt

tools menu on the top ribbon. And if we

select the Design tab, we get all of

these tools we can use to change the

look of our SmartArt graphic. Over here,

we have SmartArt Styles, where we can

change the look and feel of our graphic

using a bunch of these presets. Hovering

over a preset gives you a live preview

of how your graphic will change. You can

change the color scheme of your graphic

by selecting from this palette of color

schemes. And again you get a live preview

of what your color scheme will look like

when you hover over a selection. Now, to

the left, you can change the layout of

your SmartArt graphic to another layout

within that category. So, in our instance,

we're in the matrix category, so we have

these choices. Or, you can hit this button

down here and get back to the SmartArt

library, where you can pick from the

entire selection of diagrams. The Create

Graphics section allows you to add text

to the SmartArt graphic, as well as add

more shapes. Now, if we go back up to the

ribbon and we select the Format tab

under SmartArt tools, we get a whole

bunch of tools to

change the look and feel of the

different shapes, the individual shapes

in your diagram. You can change the shape

of individual elements under the Change

Shape drop-down. If you hit that, you can

see all of these shapes that you can use

in your diagram. You can change the size

of the individual shapes. There's also a

selection of Shape Styles. You can drill

down and change the elements of shapes,

like the fill or the outline. You can

even add effects to the individual

shapes. Now, I'm not going to go into all

of the different customizations in this

video. But it's safe to say you can

really tune your SmartArt graphic to

look just the way you want it to. And let

me show you something else. You don't

need to have a slide with bullet points

to create a SmartArt diagram. You can

start with a blank slide. Then you just

go up to Insert on the top menu. Then

over to the Illustrations section and

select SmartArt. The SmartArt library

pops up and then you can select the

diagram you want to work with. And then

you select it and it's inserted onto

your slide. Then you can add your text,

modify it, change the colors, do all that

stuff. Now, I usually work this way for a

couple reasons when I'm using SmartArt.

First, it forces you to think about

your content visually, which is

what you should be doing when you're

making videos. And second, it forces you

to organize your information into an

effective structure. Structuring your

information and making it more visual

makes your content easier to understand

and remember. But there's one more thing

about SmartArt that makes it a

tremendous tool for video. You can

animate it, and it's really easy. All you

have to do is select your graphic and go

up and select Animations on the top

ribbon. Select an animation. I'll select

fade for this example. And it's applied

to your SmartArt graphic. Let's see how

this looks by going into slideshow mode.

I'll hit the Forward Arrow key on my

keyboard and our graphic appears. But

this doesn't really work for me. What I

want to do is build up the slide by

bringing on each element individually.

That way I can control the pace of the

information, so my viewer isn't

overwhelmed. So, we'll hit escape to get

back to the editing screen. And then I'll

go up to the ribbon and select Effects

Options, which is right beside the

animation panel. We drop that down and

we'll see we have a bunch of selections.

And the one I want is 'One by One.' This

will bring on each element of our

SmartArt graphics individually. And so I'll

select that. And then you'll see on the

left, here, that I now have five

animations on this slide. So let's

preview this in slideshow mode. Okay, I'll

hit the Forward Arrow key and my first

element appears. And I hit the key again

and my second element appears. And then

I can talk about that one for a bit. Then

hit the Forward Arrow key again and my

third element comes on. And I can talk

about that for a while. And so on, and so

on. So, using SmartArt and PowerPoint,

we've taken a somewhat basic, boring

slide with bullet points and turned it

into a much more engaging and

instructive motion graphic. And I just

barely scratched the surface of what's

possible with SmartArt animation in

PowerPoint. SmartArt is just one of many

powerful animation features right inside

of PowerPoint. How do you think you might

use SmartArt in your next PowerPoint-

based video. Let me know in the comments,

below. And if you'd like to see more

tutorials about how to use PowerPoint as

a video creation tool, let me know that

in the comments, too. And of course, if you

found this video useful, please give it a

like. Share it. And of course, don't forget

to subscribe. My subscribers keep me

going. They drive me to continue to

create and share useful content.

Thanks for watching. And I'll see you

next time.

Make Formic Acid - Duration: 6:09.

Warning: This experiment may produce small amounts of toxic and volatile acrolein.

Work outside or in a fume hood.

Formic acid is corrosive, wear gloves when handling it.

Greetings fellow nerds.

Some years ago i showed how to make silver conductive ink and one of key ingredients was formic acid.

In this video we'll make formic acid from glycerol and oxalic acid.

The overall idea is that oxalic acid is essentially formic acid with carbon dioxide in it.

So we're going to break that off by heating.

But we can't do this with pure oxalic acid because it will mostly sublime and decompose.

So to stabilize it against unwanted reactions we're going to esterify with glycerol.

Then we're going to heat it up and convert it formic acid.

Afterward we'll hydrolyze it again to separate the formic acid from glycerol and collect it.

So let's get stared.

Get an erlenmeyer flask with 100 mL of glycerol also known as glycerine.

This can found at pharmacies or from soap making companies.

I recommend soap companies as it's cheaper.

Now add 100g of oxalic acid dihydrate.

Set up a distillation apparatus around it and warm up the mixture.

Now it's important to keep the temperature of the mixture in between 105 and 120 celsius.

If it goes too high it will decompose the reactants.

Normally you do this by immersing a thermometer but all of mine were broken so i'm just eyeballing this by gradually raising the temperature until it begins to distill.

I'm likely going too hot and decomposing some but i'm not too worried.

Glycerol is very cheap.

It's actually a waste product from making biodiesel so it can be extremely cheap.

Looks like the water is condensing inside the flask.

I don't want refluxing, i want distillation.

So I'm putting on this shroud of aluminum foil to keep the flask warm and help the water distill over.

Okay, so what's happening chemically.

First the excess water from both the glycerol and the oxalic acid distills over.

Then as the mixture loses water the oxalic acid reacts with the glycerol to produce glyceryl oxalate ester.

As the heating continues the glycerol oxalate decomposes into glyceryl monoformate and carbon dioxide.

This is where we're essentially producing formic acid.

Although it's still esterified with the glycerol.

Now if there was some water present it would hydrolyze with the glyceryl monoformate to produce glycerol and formic acid.

But most of that water has already boiled off so we need to put some back in.

Wait until the bubble starts tapering off indicating most of the carbon dioxide has been released and the reaction is nearly complete.

Now let it cool and then add in another 100g portion of oxalic acid dihydrate.

Now replace the condenser apparatus and start heating again.

Oxalic acid dihydrate has water in it and that will cause hydrolysis of the glyceryl monoformate.

The formic acid will now distill over.

Essentially this step is where we are releasing and collecting our formic acid.

The oxalic acid will go onto make more glyceryl oxalate and eventually more glyceryl monoformate.

You can then add in more oxalic acid and repeat the cycle.

We're essentially converting oxalic acid into formic acid using glycerol as our catalyst.

I'm doing about 4 cycles but you can do as many as you want.

Just keep an eye on how much volume of liquid you have.

If it decreases significantly as you progress then the glycerol is actually being decomposed and you'll need to add in more.

If it turns black from impurities then the decomposition has gone too far and you'll need to discard and start again.

Anyway, when you're done, for your last cycle, instead of adding oxalic acid add about 50ml of water instead.

This will hydrolyze off the remaining formic acid without generating more glyceryl oxalate.

Now you have a crude mixture of formic acid and a lot of water.

To purify and concentrate it, we set up for fractional distillation and start distilling.

If you kept the original reaction temperature in the right range, the first liquid you'll distill should be water.

But if you notice anything below 100 celsius then it's impurities formed from the decomposition of the glycerol esters.

Two of the main ones are acrolein that boils at around 51 to 53 degrees celsius.

and allyl alcohol with azetrope around 88 degrees celsisus.

Acrolein in particular is a rather volatile toxic irritant.

Fortunately the amount produced is very little and they're easy to separate by fractional distillation like this.

Oh crap i got a bug here.

Okay bug, I'm going to call you Gary.

I'll give you twenty bucks if you don't do what i think you're going to do... no... No... NO...

Ugh...

you just lost twenty bucks Gary.

Okay, let me pour the distillate back in and start all over again.

And here we are again.

Assuming everything goes smoothly and nothing interrupts you like stupid bugs named Gary,

continue distilling off the water at around 100 celsius and switch out the receivers at 104 celsius.

At 107 celsius we'll be collecting a high boiling azeotrope formic acid.

And there you have it, an azeotropic mixture of 77.5% formic acid and water.

Now some of you might want to dry it further and get pure formic acid but i recommend against that.

Formic acid has a tendency to generate small amounts of carbon monoxide when you attempt to dehydrate it.

Especially if you use sulfuric acid as the dehydrating agent.

I thus recommend storing it and using it as the azeotrope.

For most amateur uses some water isn't a problem anyway.

Anyway formic acid can be used to make silver conductive ink as i've shown in a previous video.
