TSAVO MAN-EATERS: Why the TSAVO lions ate so many people? - Duration: 5:42.
In this video..
The Tsavo Man-Eaters, two lions who killed dozens of people in 1898, which is still a
big mystery to date.
Why?
Hi, I'm Heathcliff and this is Lions Ground.
I hope you have a fantastic day.
Between March and December 1898, the two lions - also called Tsavo Man-Eaters - killed dozens
of construction workers working on the track in Tsavo (Kenya).
At the end of 1898, Lieutenant Colonel John Patterson knows to stop the two lions: he
killed them.
Today - more than 100 years after the lions made their victims - it is still unclear why
the lions killed so many people.
But a new research end the mystery.
Using the latest technologies, researchers have studied the remains of the lions who
are in the Field Museum.
And it gives surprising new insights.
It was long thought that the lions were joking on people because they were desperate.
Their habitat had two years of drought.
And a virus epidemic had greatly diminished the number of preys.
So it was not so crazy that some researchers thought that a lack of prey put the lions
on the idea of eating people.
But new research wiped out the hypothesis of the table.
Based on the teeth of the lions.
These teeth do not testify that the lions chew and eat bones.
Apparently there was still enough food available (otherwise the lions would have complete eaten
carcasses, including bones).
"The teeth's microscopic wear is less complex than of an animal that consumes many bones,
such as a hyena," according to researcher Larisa DeSantis.
"The wear looks more like the wear you'll find at a lion in the zoo."
But why did lions hunt people?
For an answer to that question, we have to go back to the teeth of the lions.
For although that dent does not show wear and tear as a result of the biting of bones,
the teeth of both lions are not in perfect condition.
For example, the lion that killed most people had an abscess near the root of its fang.
They lions suffered a lot of pain when hunting other animals - such as zebras - to be honest
impossible.
"Normally, lions use their teeth to choke their preys like zebras and buffalo," but
with his abscess, the lion was unable to kill its prey.
"People are much easier to catch."
The teeth and jaws of the other lion were a little better.
Research indicates that this lion killed many more zebras and buffaloes and less people
than the lion with the abscess.
That the lions did not eat the people completely - so with bones - could not be explained by
the researchers.
Possibly this could be due to dental problems.
Another option is that they did not get the chance because the bodies of the victims were
quickly discovered by colleagues.
In any case, the researchers think that the teeth problem of the lion played a major role
in his remarkable behavior.
"It's rare for lions attacking people, but when it happens, it's a catastrophe".
"When a big dangerous predator becomes unfit to hunt preys, this kind of behavior is possible:
no animal will allow starve to death."
Today, lions rarely hunt on humans, but if the human population continues to grow and
the number of preys declines, hunting people will be an interesting option for many lions
because we are easy prey and softer.

What's So BAD About Gluten? - Duration: 3:42.
Gluten gluten gluten… what is it about gluten that is so bad?
So bad that it sparked a $10 billion gluten-free industry where food products are marked up
on average by 250%.
First, what exactly IS gluten?
Gluten is simply a protein found in wheat and grains.
It has elastic and chewy properties that's critical for cooking common foods such as
bread, pizza and cereal.
Heck, it's even found in beer.
Unfortunately, gluten consumption is not safe for everyone, specifically those with Celiac
disease.
This nasty disease caused by adverse reactions to gluten creates a slew of gastrointestinal
disorders that threaten your ability to properly absorb nutrients.
It leads to other not-so-nice health problems such as abdominal distention, bloating, and
diarrhea.
Among that, it's even associated with autoimmune health issues, such as thyroid disease and
diabetes and other food allergies like lactose intolerance.
And in very severe cases, it can lead to gastrointestinal cancer and increased risk of death.
With so many potentially dangerous problems, it kind of justifies the rage against gluten.
However, when it comes to actual prevalence, it's found that only .5 to 1% of humans
have Celiac disease, which doesn't even come close to the estimated 25% of adults
actively trying to avoid gluten.
Granted, there are people without Celiac Disease that have adverse reactions to gluten.
However, the majority of people do not.
And it probably doesn't warrant such significant mark-ups in price for gluten-free products.
On top of that, when you avoid products that do have gluten, like whole grain foods, you
might be skimping yourself of important nutrients, particularly protein, B vitamins, calcium,
fiber, and iron.
As far as weight loss or any general fitness goal, there's simply no good evidence that
back up gluten-free diets providing any additional benefits.
Unsurprisingly, the only studies that shows gluten actually causing weight gain are the
ones that didn't match the amount of food each subject ate.
When it is matched, no statistical significance is found.
Sorry, but if that gluten-free cookie has the same number of calories as Grandma's
cookies, it won't do you any better.
Yo grandma, hit me up with that sponsorship.
Now, gluten isn't all friendly.
The research does indeed show a relationship between gluten and inflammation.
But, there still needs to be more work done in trying to figure out exactly what it is
about gluten causing inflammation or any other health problems.
As of right now, it will be wrong to say that gluten isn't dangerous at all, but there
isn't enough evidence to warrant such a heavy stigma for gluten as we see today.
After all, there are healthy people that truly believe going gluten-free definitely helps
them.
If anything, they probably should go see a doctor to find out if they're part of the
1% with Celiac disease.
Whether this is a placebo effect or an undiscovered issue with gluten products, that might not
even be because of the gluten, if people do feel better when skipping gluten, then more
power to them.
For those that have zero issues with the chewy gooey protein, then more power to your grainy
goodness.
If you haven't already, come check out the new "It Depends" T-Shirt in the PictureFit

are serious deregulators who are already starting to prune back regulations
that accomplish little but cost taxpayers and innovators lots of time, money and resources.

Every new President enters office thinking he can direct the course of human history
via his pen, or in the case of Trump, his twitter feed.
For all his bluster and lack of self awareness,
Trump is also learning that the world is more complicated than he reckoned.
He's pushed back deadlines for all sorts of projects,
from funding for his stupid and useless immigration wall
to a timeline for tax reform,
which shoes that he's at least living in the real world.
To the extent he realizes that his best path forward is in cutting economic regulations
