Hello and welcome to Learn English with Jojo.
Today I have a story for you at three different speeds: slow, medium, and fast.
And that way you will be able to see how the words form in my mouth and I think it's good
every once in a while to take a deep look at the way the language sounds when you are
learning that language.
The story I have written for you is about my experience learning French and I hope it
will be interesting to you and make you want to watch me tell this story many times so
that you can train your ear in listening to a native speaker speak English.
And I advise you to watch this video for the first time without any subtitles so you can
just watch how my mouth moves and listen for the sounds that my mouth makes and the second
time with English subtitles and to stop the video each time you don't understand something
that I have said and you can go look it up on the internet.
As always I leave shortcuts in the description of this video if you would like to skip ahead
at any point for example if you are a more advanced learner you probably do not want
to watch the first speed of this story because it will be too slow.
And one more thing to notice while watching this video: it will be mostly in the past,
in the past tense, so I will be using many forms of the past tense so just be aware of that.
Ok.
Let's go.
Here's the story at a slow speed.
Almost four years ago, I was not in a good place in my life.
I was starting my third year at the university of Illinois and I was studying something that
I was no longer interested in.
I was studying statistics and business because that is what I thought I had to study to get
a good job after college.
But it was not fulfilling for me.
So when my friends Ethan and Natalie told me they were going to study abroad in Paris
for a semester, I decided on a whim that I would go too, and treat it as a sort of break
or sabbatical from my studies.
Natalie was already amazing at French.
She was majoring in French and Math in college.
But Ethan and I were both really bad at French.
We were in the same French class in high school, but we didn't take it seriously at all and
it had been three years since then.
So we both started using Duolingo to learn enough to be able to go about our daily lives
in France.
It soon became a competition between us.
Each week we would see who could get the most XP and the winner would brag about it to the loser.
But our real challenge was who could finish all the lessons first.
It was neck and neck the whole time, each of us practicing for at least an hour a day.
After about three months, it was Ethan who finished first and I'm still upset about
it to this day.
Ok.
Here's the story for a second time at a medium speed, a little bit faster than the first time.

Ok, now the third time through I am going to speak at a normal speed, a speed I would
talk to my friends who are also native speakers of English, my family, anyone like that, so
listen for places that I skip sounds or I jumble my words a little bit to try to sound
more like a native speaker when you speak English.
Ok.

Okay I hope that was helpful for you, or at least interesting.
