The Samsung Galaxy S8 will be coming April 21st and preorders will begin March 30th,
three weeks before the release date.
There are two versions of the S8: the standard Galaxy S8 with a 5.8-inch screen and the larger
S8 Plus with a 6.2-inch screen.
Pricing is up to the carriers but word on the street says it will start at $720.
The coolest feature of the phone is the screen.
On the S8, it extends up and down to cover nearly the entire front of the phone.
It also curves around the left and right, which Samsung has branded the "infinity
display."
The corners of the phone are slight curved instead of squared-off.
There are no seams on the phone.
Samsung got rid of the hardware home button.
Instead it uses software buttons like other Android phones.
Those buttons disappear when you go full screen.
The fingerprint sensor is now on the back on the phone.
It's right next to the camera, which means your camera might get a bit dirty.
But there is a 3.5mm headphone jack.
There's also a new button on the phone, and that's Bixby.
Bixby is their new personal assistant.
The goal is that anything you can control with touch you can control with voice.
You can use it make voice commands for editing a photo rather than digging through the interface
to find the right button.
There's also Bixby Home, which can control your home's lighting and tell you the weather.
Bixby can also take a picture of something and search it up for you.
So you can use it for wine labels and book covers.
The Galaxy's platform will either be Snapdragon 835 or Samsung's own Exynos, depending on
your region.
Both have a 10 nanometre chip, which will help with power consumption.
It also makes it lighting fast.
The standard S8 has a 570 pixels per inch 5.8 inch screen with a resolution of 2960
x 1440.
The S8 Plus has the same resolution on its 6.2 inch screen, which works out to be 529
pixels per inch.
This means that there is a whole new resolution us responsive and app designers have to work
with.
And this phone hopefully won't explode as they didn't push the envelope when it comes
to battery capacity.
The S8 has a 3,000 milliampere hour battery and the S8 Plus has a larger 3,5000 milliampere
hour battery.
The camera on the back is the same as previous versions.
The front-facing camera has an upgrade with an 8-megapixel sensor and autofocus.
They call the autofocus "Smart AF", which I thought that abbreviation meant something
else.
Samsung's software now features a face detect system to unlock the phone.
But they admit it's less secure than the other ways of locking, so you will still need
to set up the fingerprint scanners to make payments.
In the US, S8 and S8 Plus will come in black, gray, and silver.
Gold and blue are options internationally.
