Hi there, Vladimir here, with another video on how to learn English

How to become fluent in a foreign language, in English in our case

How to become a fluent speaker of English?

Fluent is such a hot word nowadays, everybody on the Internet is promising to make you fluent

here is my 2 cents/opinion

First we need to define the word fluent.

I use the definition given by Cambridge Dictionary

when a person is fluent, they can speak a language easily, well, quickly and without many pauses

The first thing you need to do is ask yourself Are you a fluent speaker of your native language?

do you speak your mother tongue easily, well, quickly and without many pauses?

it is not possible to be fluent in a foreign language/English, and not be fluent in

your native language first.

Don't blame the foreign language alone for your lack of fluency

your second language fluency is likely to mirror your first language fluency

this was the first condition for fluency

to be fluent in English you have to be fluent in your native language first

Second condition for fluency is to read a lot, yes you heard me right, read a lot

lots of reading and listening practice, it's what we call input, but mainly reading.

Many people blame their poor language fluency on their lack of speaking practice.

let me let you in on a secret: speaking is overrated

the reason why you don't speak English fluently is because you don't read enough

read and listen

Just consider how long it takes a child to start speaking somewhat fluently

at least 6-7 years of intensive listening

reading can shorten that time, it's the 1 huge advantage adults have over children

we can start reading English texts from day 1

The third condition for speaking fluency is to use Monolingual Learner's Dictionaries,

read a lot and use Monolingual Learner's Dictionaries every time you come across a new word

As I said, everybody is making videos about how to become fluent

the most popular fluency video by far is titled Get fluent with 1 trick - become a confident

English speaker with this simple trick by one Drew Badger and the simple trick is

to learn English like native speakers

learn English like a native speaker, what the hell does this mean?

how can a 30-year old learn English like a native speaker, wait to be reborn in an

English speaking country with English speaking parents, go to English only school

the most popular English learning video on YouTube

help me understand, I am simultaneously discouraged and encouraged by this video

ask yourself this simple question:

what does a native English speaker like Drew know about how to become fluent in English ?

It's like Shaquille O'Neal teaching you how to dunk

I would much rather Allen Iverson taught me how to dunk

Allen:183cm, 75 kg Shaq: 216cm, 155 kg

I bet Drew's Japanese isn't as fluent, he should make a video to demonstrate how his

1 simple trick helped him learn a foreign language Japanese in his case

you won't see that video

learn English like native speakers, native speakers never use Monolingual Learner's Dictionaries

so many fluency videos on the Internet and nobody talks about Monolingual Dictionaries

why? because native speakers don't have to use Monolingual Learner's Dictionaries

the last condition for speaking fluency is of course speaking

but make no mistake

in order to make a single sentence in English you have to have read at least 10 pages in English

That's my 2 cents/opinion, for what is worth, after all all I've done is become fluent in English,

here I am speaking English fluently and confidently

as I said, I am both discouraged and encouraged by videos like the 1 simple trick video

discouraged because I truly, honestly don't understand why the 11 million views

and encouraged because there is room for some real, helpful stuff on the internet

like my book Virtually Native

Everything you need to know about how to become a fluent speaker of English is in that book

Virtually Native is available at Amazon and virtuallynative.com

Just So You Know YEG - Urban Wildlife - Duration: 1:38.

One of the cool things about coyotes is they eat about 1800 mice a year.

on top of that, coyotes will eat various different types

of dead animals that they'll come across.

They provide a cleaning service as they

remove these dead animals from the city.

Coyotes are the animals that we get the most calls about

within the City of Edmonton.

They do come into residential areas so don't be concerned,

we need you to see them.

It was really interesting, we were doing canvassing

door-to-door, just talking about coyotes and educating,

and letting them know what to do if you see a coyote.

So a little kid had answered the door, and he was wearing

this little bear costume.

I had asked him "What do you do if you see a coyote?"

and he expanded in his "Well you act big!"

and then he started screaming

and he's like "and then you don't run away!"

"You just stare at the coyote, and show them who's boss!"

He definitely would have scared off a coyote.

As a park ranger within the City of Edmonton,

we field a lot of calls regarding Canada geese.

Canada geese can nest in all sorts of different areas.

On top of buildings, in peoples back yards, in flower pots.

They're protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act

regulations, and also under The Wildlife Act.

So make sure that you're not touching the nest,

you're not moving the eggs, let them have their own space.

When you're encountering wildlife,

a lot of times it can be tempting to provide some food sources for them,

but a lot of times that can actually be detrimental to wildlife

and affect how they are developing, or how they're growing.

We definitely need to keep wildlife wild,

and just enjoy from a distance.

Edmontonians can do their part to help keep wildlife wild.

Where are you, what are you doing?

I'm smiling by myself at the good memories

So I try to act calm but my heart can't help but get caught

My heart, my heart, what's wrong with me?

Whistling at the warm spring wind

Should I call you or not?

When did I fall in love with you?

I confessed to you in my dream last night

I try to act indifferent but my heart can't help but get caught

the first 20 years of my life I felt I

mean if you were a kid if you're a

that's around your neck hanging there

it became 75 now you know why it became

75 because that math tutor that private

bath tutor that my mom got for me was

also my math teacher wise mother you

know it's just really nuts number two I

was terrible at sports I mean I had

but at least they were good at

basketball and good in football I was

bad at basketball and bad it's all kinds

of sports I mean hello what's wrong with

me number 3 i'm very little money really

very little but my mom wouldn't give me

such a small allowance and my classmates

had huge amounts and i say why why is so

life so unfair number four I was ugly I

saw myself as ugly and it yes now I know

right now you look at me you say how

could that be possible brother Bo

so so people called my classmates called

me tip you know right there why Deepak

long I look like an insect and people be

my classmates would say ref ref not for

referee for refugee because that's how

it looked like anyway I I I saw myself

as somebody was totally uneven and I

complained to God I said Lord why don't

I have gifts you know that that's who I

was growing up and when I look at myself

now and how God is using me I say wow

wow there were a lot of things within me

that I didn't see and that's the thing

when you look at yourself you look at

the mirror or you look at yourself and

you see you see all the weaknesses and

the falls and you see your your

disadvantages you see your adequacy

that's all you see you know what God

sees he sees you of your gifts and your

awesomeness and he sees what's fantastic

at you remember he made you and he never

makes garbage he never does you know

I'll tell you a story one day there was

this guy who died and he went to heaven

and while in heaven he started talking

to the st. Peter and its heart started

telling his life story to st. Peter and

he was at that point when he said you

know I was a manager in a company st.

Peter and and our company folded up it

crashed to the ground you know what st.

Peter he said this I wonder if we had a

better CEO if we had a better president

maybe our company would not have folded

up but would have grown even more what

do you think I'm st. Peter said yes and

he smiled I bet the guy said really if

we had a better CEO who would have been

that better CEO and and st. Peter

pointed to one old man over there and

the guy looked at the old man is it hey

I know that guy he was our messenger he

was our messenger what he he would have

been the better president

and st. Peter smiled at this yes he

would have been one of the best the most

brilliant CEOs the world has ever known

if he chose that path there's a path

right in front of you a path of

greatness a path of great contribution

to the world a path of heroism a path of

a place where you can donate yourself

and so many people will be blessed I

don't care what that is that could be

also be being a messenger but being a

messenger of love and grace or it could

be of CEO it could be a general it could

be could be a leader it could be a

preacher it could be an entrepreneur it

could be a mother taking care and

raising above I don't know that the

roles are our could be mixed up it is it

doesn't matter what role but it's a path

of greatness that's in front of you can

you choose that path don't ever say and

to ordinary don't ever say I'm

untalented that's what I was my problem

hi my name is bo Sanchez and I'm here to

inspire you welcome to full tank I do

this from monday to friday and i pray as

i read the gospel I prayed it'll inspire

you our gospel is John chapter 7 and

Jesus said all the people said but we

know where he is from when the Messiah

comes no one will know where he is from

oh we know where he is from ordinary

right that's what they're saying yeah

average guy Jesus cried out at the

temple area you know me and you also

know where I am where I come from yet I

did not come on my own but the one who

sent me you know so so it's like that

whole idea again of yeah we know this

guy he's ordinary and you know when you

when you look at somebody and you say

he's ordinary you don't expect too much

from him right and boy did they have it

all wrong because Jesus in his

ordinariness was the king of all kings

and Lord of all Lords you are ordinary

anyway you know don't don't don't look

at yourself and live it all that God

wants to do in your life he wants to do

great things through you in the same way

that Jesus was so ordinary you may be so

ordinary and yet greatness is inside you

can I pray for you spiritually hold my

hand Lord Jesus thank you for making us

beautiful and fantastic and awesome

thank you Lord for creating us wonderful

contrary to what he said,

his dad would still be running the businesses.

That's what he told us. Yeah.

He was like, "Remember how, back in late February,

"I said I wouldn't involve my dad in our businesses?

Well, now I'm gonna report to him sometimes all the time."

Now, on any other day, this flaring new evidence

of the president blatantly putting family over ethics

would dominate our time.

Bu then you turn the page and you're like,

"Oh, (bleep), world news."

Breaking news we're following out of South Korea.

The ousted president Park Geun-hye has been arrested.

It is the latest in a corruption scandal

which saw Park removed from office earlier this month.

Park is accused of bribery and abuse of power,

letting her close friend extort millions of dollars

from companies, including Samsung.

Wow.

A president impeached,

removed from office,

and thrown in jail.

Imagine that.

No, no, seriously.

Let's all close our eyes and imagine that.

(cheering, applause)

Mmm.

The story of South Korea's president being arrested

isn't just big news there, it also affects America.

You see, the U.S. has stationed thousands of troops

in South Korea just in case North Korea baby man

has too much boom boom juice.

But now, with South Korea's president in jail,

no one knows if her replacement is gonna be friendly to the U.S.

But, let's be honest, who has time for the world

when America's own baby man is declaring war back at home?

Now, today, President Trump turned to Twitter

to threaten some members of his own party.

REPORTER: Here it is: (reading)

Members of the caucus are not simply taking it on the chin.

Far from it. The Michigan Republican Justin Amash

tweeting today: (reading)

-AUDIENCE: Ooh! -Now... Now...

First of all, that was a good burn. Secondly...

this is when you realize

how extreme American politics has become.

Freedom Caucus guy is accusing Donald Trump--

Donald Trump-- of being an establishment politician.

Yeah. That's like calling Godzilla a city planner.

That is so extreme.

And, also... and, also... Donald Trump--

it's not enough that he's fighting with the Democrats,

the FBI, the federal court and Mexico,

now he's also fighting the Republicans.

He's like a political Jackie Chan.

That's-that's what he's like.

He's just slapping everybody.

(laughter)

(cheering and applause)

I'm-I'm not gonna lie.

Like, I could spend my whole life enjoying Donald Trump

in a Twitter beef with right-wing Republicans.

But-but not today.

Because I've got Carolina on my mind.

Lawmakers in North Carolina have reached an agreement

to repeal the state's so-called bathroom bill,

which required transgendered people to use bathrooms

that correspond with the gender on their birth certificate.

The move comes after college basketball threatened

to move more games out of the state in protest.

Wow. I knew college basketball was big in America

but big enough to undo transphobia?

That's insane.

"A man turning into a woman?

"That is sick!

"But not as sick as that dunk.

Am I right? Yeah!"

Honestly, I-I can't believe this is still an issue.

North Carolina has become such a disgrace

South Carolina has changed its name to North Georgia.

And-and while this sounds,

while this sounds like great news for equal rights,

it's not necessarily the win that it might seem.

LGBT activists, some critics, they're not happy.

They don't consider this a victory.

They argue that the replacement bill

still leaves room for discrimination.

That House Bill 142,

it gives the state the final say

regarding multi-stall bathrooms.

It also prohibits cities from issuing

their own nondiscrimination ordinances until 2020.

Now, I'm sorry, but this (bleep) is just pure evil.

Because not only can North Carolina lawmakers

still discriminate, they've made it illegal

to block discrimination.

That's just evil.

So now the infamous bathroom bill is overturned,

but the discrimination remains,

which means, luckily for Tar Heels,

they can keep their slogan--

welcome to North Carolina,

the most confusing state to poop in.

What makes Unbox Therapy so successful? - Duration: 7:49.

What makes an "Unbox Therapy?"

How did Lew become so successful?

Why does his channel have 7 million subscribers?

These are questions that people ask of all YouTube channels with a large subscriber base,

but let's focus on this guy…

I'm EposVox, a YouTube certified channel development and strategist coach and let's

break down the Unbox Therapy channel and see how Lew has become so successful on YouTube.

The answers are actually fairly easy to understand, once you see the elements that combine to

make a successful YouTube channel with millions of viewers.

This is more of a channel breakdown than a channel review.

I'm not here to give tips to Lew, but to give you tips and perspective based on Lew's

earned success.

It can be difficult to look at a popular YouTube channel today and think that you could make

videos anywhere near on their level, and UnboxTherapy is no exception.

He's got an engaging charisma that can't be ignored, a super professional video studios,

multiple camera angles all in stunning 4K, and an invisible friend named Jack.

But he didn't start that way.

Let's take a look at the origins of Unbox Therapy, and then we will fast forward and

see the elements that Lew has built up over the past few years.

This is one of the earliest videos posted to Unbox Therapy still available today.

You'll notice a similar camera angle - the overtop webcam so you can see the actual unboxing

progress - but that's it.

The way he talks, the way he acts, and the quality of the video are all different.

We all start out rough around the edges - still learning our cameras, still learning how to

create high production value, how to act on camera to connect with the widest audience

possible.

This is something we all continue to learn over time.

The video has over 140 thousand views, which may invoke an initial reaction of "well

his videos were still doing better than mine do" - but that's incorrect.

This video probably didn't get many views when it first came out.

The video has only acquired that many views over the course of six years, whereas his

newer videos get 1 to 2 million views in a matter of days.

Quite a stark difference.

So what steps and elements were involved in taking Lew's channel from small-time this,

to big-time this?

Unbox Therapy was one of the first channels on YouTube making any sort of "quality"

tech and unboxing videos in this style.

YouTube wasn't super young in 2010, but this kind of pseudo-professional content wasn't

around just yet.

By being one of the "first" channels, Lew had a huge advantage to get embedded into

YouTube's search algorithms and overall brand awareness.

That's many more years of product coverage to be searched for and found by viewers than

the rest of us.

Not to mention starting with the name "Unbox Therapy" as "unboxing" is first becoming

a thing, is a big deal, too.

The jump to 4K was also a huge promotion opportunity for many channels.

By being one of the first channels to jump to 4K, Unbox Therapy got a lot of extra promotion

and highlighting from YouTube when they started drawing attention to the site's new 4K capabilities.

Plus, as a channel that appeals to techies, the 4K resolution was very appealing for enthusiasts

to watch in the best quality possible.

Once the Unbox Therapy channel started turning a high enough profit, he brought on interns

and a team to help him product content.

A team means the amount of work that can be put out grows exponentially - more videos

edited quicker, more social media and promotion work, more reaching out to companies, and

so on.

This will automatically lead to improvements for the channel and growth due to just more

being able to be done.

One person only has so many hours in the day.

Over time, Lew developed a very excitable and charismatic personality - the penultimate

sign of an experienced, developed YouTuber.

This allows him to be more entertaining and connectable to a wider audience.

If your videos are full of mumbling, uhms, and uhhs, or you aren't excited in your

videos - you still have much work to do.

Lew is THE hype man of tech on YouTube.

Lastly, YouTube is a self-feeding cycle.

The more videos you post (as long as they're good videos that people enjoy), the more opportunities

there are for people to discover your channel - and thus your channel grows.

The more subscribers you gain and keep around, the better your videos will do: Giving you

better ranks in search results and continuing the cycle of more people finding your videos.

YouTube also likes to promote their most successful channels - it's good business.

So the better your channel does, the more natural and direct promotion your channel

gets, and you just continue to grow.

Eventually Lew has the financial backing from his channel to host big giveaways, buy the

latest products to show off as soon as they come out, and so on - all huge advantages

to keep building more success.

An example of both this and his team's efficiency playing a role in his success would be the

whole "Bend Gate" ordeal.

They were able to quickly source iPhones to "bend test," along with the tools and

such, and put together videos quick enough to take advantage of the trending topic.

This resulted in HUGE growth in his channel.

You will notice certain, commonly-mentioned things are NOT on my list: Being secretly

paid and promoted by the biggest companies ever or YouTube, being in cahoots with YouTube,

cheating, buying subs and views, "getting lucky" and so on.

Those things aren't how YouTube actually works.

Behind every truly-successful channel is a dedicated host or team, years of hard work,

and polish that can only come from experience.

Every channel's success (or most of them, at least) can be broken down into easily-understandable

and potentially-repeatable elements.

Heck, my own channel's good qualities are nothing more than specific, dissected aspects

of the content (both from YouTube and "old media") that I found enjoyable, adapted

for my own style and content goals.

BUT not everyone has the most charismatic personality, access to the newest products,

a good idea of what "good content" even is, or the ability to pop out frequent videos.

We all sucked horribly when we started YouTube, no solo channel is an exception to this.

YouTube "tips," vague or otherwise, help set you on your way while you focus on developing

good content.

If you or whatever YouTuber in mind (aka. roughly 90% of channels created) never "gets

good" at making "quality content" and keeping it relevant, their channels don't

grow and eventually they die off or just say in the "it's not fair to small YouTubers"

mindset.

Not everyone has what it takes.

This is a much higher-level discussion topic compared to my usual YouTube tips.

But this came up in the comments of a previous video, and I thought a dedicated breakdown

could be insightful, and I wanted to show some love to Lew and his team for all his

hard work.

And to Jack, for remaining ever-invisible to the camera.

If you liked the video, like it, subscribe for more awesome tech videos

and YouTube advice.

I'm EposVox and I'll see you next time.
