Exam Students, Let's Make Concentration Easy Tip #1 - Duration: 7:37.

So you're studying for exams!

The question that I'm asked most is

How can I help myself to concentrate better?

I help thousands of people every year

to concentrate more effectively and efficiently,

to remember more of what they read,

what they hear and what they study.

We make sure that they can bring

that to mind when they need it in their exams!

So if you're interested in the

techniques that I use, I'm going to be

showing 1 simple activity that you can use

to eliminate visual distraction

so that you can focus all of your attention

into your FOCUS ZONE

Your FOCUS ZONE is the space between the top of your head

the of your shoulders and down to your waist.

When you are concentrating and

focusing most of your energy and your attention

attention needs to be focused into this

space because this is where you

hold your book to read this is where you write

this is where you type this is why you do the things

that you need to do in order to study

and to perform in your exams.

If you can bring your attention into this FOCUS ZONE

and keep it there for EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME

then you will have no difficulty and studying

So the first activity that I help people to do is

is to bring the visual attention in

from their whole visual environment into this space

into their FOCUS ZONE

and to do this all we do is we reassure

your body and your mind and your whole being, in fact,

that you are SAFE in your VISUAL ENVIRONMENT.

We inherited our bodies and the way we operate

and the way that we operate

from our ancestors who were hunter-gatherers!

If they missed a single sign of danger

in their environment it could be catastrophic,

they could lose their life, their family or their food,

but for us in the 21st century

that's not the issue (Thankfully!)

We need to make sure of is that you feel secure wherever you are,

that you feel relaxed,

that you feel comfortable....

When you can feel safe in your environment

then it becomes possible for you to

focus all of your visual attention in here

and to ignore the rest of the visual environment.

To do this we are first going to

check how your eye muscles are working

because, when you are reading

your eyes have to travel over and back

and as you look up and look down

to various different things as you are studying

and if you are called to look up to you need to be

able to look up and look back down again

as long as your vision remains within your FOCUS ZONE

then things are okay

Right now we need to check how well the muscles

of your eyes are working because when

the muscles of your eyes aren't working

well you will start to use your neck

muscles and you find people who are

reading and they're turning the head

rather than moving their eyes

This can be a major strain and stress on your body

it makes you tired very quickly and it

makes you want to switch off

concentrating and studying from the

topic that you're dealing with.

So what we're going to do now is

to check how your eyes are moving

I'm going to invite you to LOOK UP towards your eyebrows

and then LOOK DOWN towards your chin

and look towards one ear

and then look towards the other ear

and just decide yourself which one

of those (directions) felt most strained

Was it (looking )UP Down to this side or the other?

Just write that down for yourself,

notice or just remember it.......

So the first activity we're going to do

involves putting your thumb and two fingers like this.

The distance apart is approximately the same

as the width of your mouth.

So bring it down here onto your chest

under your collar bone

just at the wing tips of your shirt.....

What you want to do is

rub here (under your collarbones )

the other hand is going to rest on your belly-button. (naval)

While we are doing this I'm going to invite you

you to move your eyes slowly all the way

all over to one side....

at eye level if you can

.... and then slowly all the way back....

....go to the other side at eye-level

look towards one ear

and then slowly across

towards the other ear again.

So one loop all the way over and back is one complete cycle

and we will do this three times in total.

Slowly...... slowly send your eyes across all the way

and all the way back slowly, gently

and as you are doing this you may find that you

actually scanning the whole visual horizon.

You are reassuring your brain and your body that you feel safe

and that there is no imminent danger

in your environment.

Next we're going to swap hands

I'm going to invite you just begin at

one (ear either on) this side of the other side

and slowly allow your eyes to go all the

way up towards your eyebrows,

across your forehead, follow all the way towards your ear

down across your cheek, down towards your chin

towards the other cheek,

over towards your ear,

all the way up towards your eyebrow

all the way up along

and anywhere that you find that your eyes are jumping

don't worry about it because we're going

to go around three times in total.

As we are doing this we are scanning the

environment above you and below you,

and we are reassuring the hunter-gatherer within you

that you're not going to be attacked

from the overhanging trees

you're not going to be attacked from the ground

and as a result you can feel safe and secure.

Because you know feel safe and secure within yourself

you are going to find it so much easier to

bring attention into the very center of your FOCUS ZONE

and you are going to find easier to

read and to do other things that will be

involved in studying.

So I'm going to check with you now

Please look towards your eyebrows

and look towards your chin

look towards one ear and thentowards the other ear.

So, is there the same level of strain(as before)

or have your eyes relaxed?

In the comments underneath

please let me know how you got on.

(There will be a new video ) tomorrow which will

help you to clear away the auditory distractions

so that you'll no longer be hearing the outside noises

and you are able to focus and calm down

the hearing and listening inside your head

so that the only thing that you're

hearing is your ( inner )voice as you reading

or your (inner )voice as you are working out the problem that you're solving

Thank you for watching

Join PBS NOVA on Kickstarter before March 3 to help MAKE SCIENCE FOR ALL - Duration: 5:54.

David Pogue: We're definitely looking at a 20 to 90% chance of… something…

No, no, no.

I was gonna to be on the 8:15 stagecoach to Chicago…

Nurse: Patient's ready, doctor.

Doctor: Handsaw!

What's that for?

It's just a bunion!

( gasp )

Announcer: American students come in 25th on standardized science tests...

Announcer: Cyber terrorism is on the rise, yet only 1 in 4 high schools offer computer classes...

Announcer: 18 percent of Americans think the sun revolves around the earth...

( scream )

Hello, I'm David Pogue.

Former technology columnist for the New York Times…

tech critic for Yahoo...

and the host of 16 programs on NOVA on PBS where I've "heroically" sacrificed my

dignity in the name of science.

Fire!

( screams )

Whoa!

You know—unfortunately, when a lot of people think about science, they picture… this.

Boring Announcer: Well, that's what happens when light is reflected from things.

( snore )

And that's a shame!

Because what scientists know—and science-lovers—is that science is actually more like this!

( cheers )

It's cool and exciting!

( cheers )

And there's a bigger picture, too.

If we're gonna solve the world's problems like curing diseases, feeding the hungry,

finding enough clean energy… we need science.

So, the big question is: How can we get more people to love science?

Well, that's where NOVA comes in.

( NOVA theme music )

For over 40 years, NOVA's mission has been to bring science to life.

It's the most-watched science show on American TV.

It's won countless Emmys, Peabodys, and other awards!

Teachers across the country depend on NOVA to fire up our kids in the classroom.

And NOVA has actually changed lives.

I've met kids who've decided to become scientists and engineers

because of NOVA shows they saw.

We need to make science… for everyone… and through Kickstarter, for the first time,

we see a way to involve as many people as possible in that mission!

Our first goal is to make a new NOVA special — with your help.

It's called Beyond the Elements.

It's actually a follow-up to a show I hosted

in 2012, called Hunting the Elements —

It was a two-hour exploration of the periodic table

told through experiments... explosions...

and adventures.

And explosions.

Over 10 million people watched that show.

Nearly 3 million people downloaded the Elements app

and countless teachers use our online support materials.

We think that's proof that science CAN be for everyone!

So ever since, we've been itching to make another special,

that goes beyond the periodic table, into the secrets of molecules.

There are only about 90 naturally-occurring elements, that can combine in over 100 million ways

to make up… everything we know.

Water.

Air.

DNA.

Coffee.

Styrofoam.

Spray-on cheese…stuff…

We're so excited to make this film!

And that's where you come in.

If we reach our first goal of one million dollars, we'll be able to get started right away

making Beyond the Elements

a 2-hour TV special, that PBS will broadcast on national TV.

At one and a quarter million dollars we'll also

be able to bring Beyond the Elements into the classroom

with additional teaching materials.

Then, it gets even cooler.

If we can hit our third goal, one and half million dollars, we'll be able to go interactive.

We'll create NOVA's very first virtual-reality experience.

Whoa...

Whoa!

Acid molecule – 10 o'clock!

Sorry.

It's just really cool.

You'll see.

Finally, the more we raise above that, the more schools we can help.

Our goal is to send free DVDs of both Elements specials

to every single public high school in America.

At two and a quarter million dollars that's nearly 26,000 schools!

And what do you get out of it?

Well, first of all, you'll be helping NOVA make something huge.

You can also share your input with us.

You can follow along behind-the-scenes the whole way!

And, of course, there will be rewards.

Like t-shirts, posters, and other cool stuff you can only get here.

Or, if you'd rather give unto others, you can help out your favorite science teacher

or a whole school by sending NOVA episodes to spark young imaginations.

And check back often – we'll be adding new stuff all month!

So, that's the plan.

And, look, I know it's a huge goal, but it's so worth doing.

If we work together, we can get more people turned on by science.

We can get more students ready for their technological future.

We can get more humans equipped to tackle the world's challenges.

Let's work together to inspire curiosity about the world.

Let's do this!

Doctor: Saw!

Please!

Give to our Kickstarter!

Please!

5 Tips to Make Your Long Distance Relationship Last - Duration: 5:22.

They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but that doesn't mean it's easy

to be away from your lover...

Hey YouTube, my name is Amy North and I'm a relationship coach from the west coast of

Canada.

Today I want to talk about something that I get asked often, and that's how to survive

the distance and have a strong, healthy relationship.

Now, I know first hand that long distance relationships aren't easy, I've been there

before and I must say, it does take commitment and dedication to keep your spark alive.

That said, the tips I'm about to share with you do help keep you and your man close, despite

the miles between you.

Before I do so I'd just like to quickly ask that if you enjoy what you learn here

today then please show your support by subscribing to my YouTube channel.

There you'll find more dating advice, and other tips for a loving, lasting relationship.

Now, let's jump into my five tips for making your long distance relationship last.

1.

Have an end date in mind.

One of the hardest things about being away from your partner is not knowing when you'll

see each other again.

Why?

Because it leaves room for the imagination to run wild, and if you start doubting your

relationship, it's a tough spot to get out of.

Instead make plans with your partner, and know when you will see each other next.

Whether that means planning a visit for months down the road, or seeing each other on the

weekends, whatever the case, simply having an idea of when you're been together again

does make the distance more doable, and you'll feel more connected.

When you are together be sure to decide when you'll see each other next.

After all, saying goodbye is a lot easier when you already have another trip to look

forward to.

Of course this can be easier said than done, but if you're both seriously committed to

the relationship, then you should be able to come up with a plan between you.

2.

Send your partner reminders

It's easy to tell your man that you love or miss him, but since actions speak louder

than words, showing him that he's on your mind is a great way to stay connected.

And these don't have to be grand gestures either.

Sure, a surprise package or letter in the mail is nice, but something as simple as a

"good morning" or "good night" text also speaks volumes.

It's these little reminders that will keep you on your man's mind, and vice versa.

For some powerful ways to show your man that you love and appreciate him visit my website,

www.coachnorth.com and watch the free video presentation.

There I share tips that will not only strengthen your relationship, but they'll also help

to keep the spark alive.

I'll be sure to post the URL in the description below.

3.

Make time for one another.

This is a bit of an obvious one, but setting aside time for your partner is crucial to

making your long distance relationship last.

Sure, schedules can be conflicting, especially if you're living in different time zones,

but as the saying goes, if there's a will there's a way!

To do this, talk to your partner and compare schedules to set up "dates" for phone

or even skype calls.

Just as you would go on dates if you were in the same town or city, keep making time

for each other.

If you find that things are getting stale then switch up your routine.

Instead of settling for casual calls you could decide that every Sunday night you both enjoy

a glass of wine while video chatting.

Or, you could play an online game together, or Skype and watch a movie at the same time.

Keeping things interesting is not only a great way to pass the time you spend apart, but

it saves you from having the same old "I miss you" chats.

4.

Stay positive

It's normal to miss your man, but if you let your emotions get the best of you you're

going to start sabotaging your relationship.

If you start letting negativity seep into your relationship, then slowly but surely,

your man won't be as excited to talk to you.

Why?

Because no one wants to listen to someone who's always complaining or upset.

As tough as it may be, it's crucial that you do your best to stay positive.

Yes, the waiting can be painful but you need to remind yourself that in the end it will

be worth it.

One good trick to staying positive is to be grateful all the time.

Be thankful that you have someone to love and someone who also loves you back.

Be thankful for the little things, like the sweet text messages he sends you or the daily

check ins.

It can be hard to master, and there's no doubt that you'll have tough days, but remember,

positivity will keep your relationship loving and strong.

5.

Avoid jealousy!

Just because you can't spend time with your man, you can't expect him to isolate himself

from the rest of the world.

In fact, you should encourage him to keep busy — when he's preoccupied it'll give

him less time to sit around missing you, which as much as it may sound romantic, will end

up doing more harm than good.

That said, when your man is spending time with others it's important that you remain

supportive and don't get jealous.

Even if his plans involve women you don't know, trust him enough to be his own person.

If you get defensive anytime he's around other ladies, he'll assume it's because

you're not being faithful when you're around other men.

Or at the very least you'll come across as insecure.

On the other hand, if you're okay with it, you automatically seem more trustworthy and

confident.

So simply put, keep your cool.

Well that does it for this video, thanks so much for watching.

If you have any questions about what I've covered then please post those in the comments

section below.

Or, if you have tips for making a long distance relationship last then share those too, I'd

love to hear them!

Again, if you enjoyed this video then please do me a huge favour and subscribe to my channel.

Your support allows me to keep coming out with videos, so really it's a win-win for

both of us!

Until next time take care and good luck!

Did Blizzard Really Make Mei Skinnier? - Duration: 6:35.

Mei has become a poster-child for thick women everywhere

and now with this Lunar New Year legendary

skin, people are a little upset. They seem FOOLED that Mei isn't as skinny as they once

thought. And Blizzard themselves had some choice words about it that don't seem entirely truthful...

Might I start by saying all these lunar new year skins are fantastic? Chinese New Year

isn't really a holiday they HAD to do considering they JUST did a winter event. Most of the

Lunar New Year skins were met with praise from the community. Hot Xenyata is a thing.

Cause he has a face now. I guess people feel like they can ship him with other characters

better now? I don't know.

ANYWAY people have a problem with Mei's skin because of course they do. There was a community

post titled "where did Mei's waist go?" The top post reads "Her regular suit seems like

a tight enough fit on her but her Chinese New Year one her bust and waist are totally

slimmed down. We can have fat as fuck Roadhog and love him so why can't we have fat Mei?"

I like the comment right under it "Because you need to stop focusing on Mei's weight

and move the payload."

So what gives? I think the obvious answer is that she's wearing a big heavy jacket in

her regular skin. She even has a belt full of thick pouches around her waist so this

adds a ton more weight to her mid section. It definitely bulks up her silhouette. In

the Chinese New Year skin she's wearing thin material and a thin belt. It DOES look like

it's squeezing her pretty tight there, but that's just because all of the lines curve

inward, and out of that waist area. There's a side profile floating around comparing the

new skin to her fire fighter skin. There's definitely a lot more thickness there in the

fire fighter skin. I think it's important to note that this is a fire fighter outfit.

And those are thick as hell. It's thicker EVERYWHERE on her body. I do not think it

was intentional to make Mei appear any skinnier than she did previously. She literally just

took her jacket off. That's it.

In the original concept designs for Mei she does look skinny.

I know these are just concepts and they don't necessarily reflect the final product but,

she's skinny here. These are some ideas from the artists. I shouldn't say skinny but there is an hour glass goin' on.

UNTIL BLIZZARD RESPONDED to that forum post from earlier. A community manager said, "There's

a bug with Mei's Luna and Chang'e skins right now that's causing her waist to appear much

smaller than normal. We've already fixed the bug internally, but it's going to require

a patch to implement (ideally it'll be included in whatever next patch hits your gaming platform)."

That seems like a whole load of horse shit to me. I find it very hard to believe that

this is a bug. This is an artist's vision of what this character would look like without

all that gear on. People just don't like it and want her to be fatter. I don't think it's

going to stop anybody from playing the game. But fine, if you want to appease the fans

go right ahead. Calling it a "bug" is a little much though. Could just say you fucked up.

Blizzard has a history with responding to

criticism like this and making changes to the game because of it. There's the infamous

sexy Tracer pose that got replaced by a slightly less sexy but still pretty sexy Tracer pose.

Players even took issue with Mei's skin in the Winter Wonderland event. In a post titled

"Blizzard, please give an answer to the Mei skin." a user stated "It's clear that the

majority of people do not like that skin, and feel that it is inferior to all of the

other legendary skins in the game. Someone from Blizzard needs to respond to the criticism

of the Mei skin, and clarify what exactly defines a legendary skin. This skin is probably

going to be the last Mei legendary skin we get for awhile. A long while. If Mei was the

last hero to get a skin since launch, then I shudder to think how long it'll be until

we get our next one. A lot of people are concerned that this will be her only new skin for a

long time, and it's (as decided by the community) quite a disappointing one." Remember, these

are free updates. Blizzard doesn't have to do any of this. And for the record, I don't

think there's anything wrong with her holiday skin. It's Christmas-y, maybe people took

issue with that?

In this case it was Game Director Jeff Kaplan who responded, saying "Sorry you are disappointed

with Mei's winter skin. We don't have a specific rule for what makes something Legendary

or Epic. We just sort of make a gut call based off of what we think is cool. Coolness is

very subjective, and based off of the community reaction it seems like our gauge was off on

this one." This part is great. "For people concerned that Mei is not going to get another

Legendary for a long time, you need not worry. We have something pretty awesome for her early

next year." HA.

Oh Jeff Kaplan you were so young then...

...one month ago...

I think he hit the nail on the head right there. "Coolness is very subjective." I align

myself with Steve Job's theory that people don't know what they want, they just have

to be handed something they'll like. And not everybody is going to like what you have to

offer. You can't please everybody. It's great that Blizzard is active in their community,

but you don't need to make excuses for yourself. Your product is good. People are going to

keep playing.

Now if you wanna fix Mei, nerf the FUCK out of her so her ICE SHIELD stops blocking my

HIGH NOON.

(End slate stuff.)

How to Make Big Digital Pattern / Template for DIY Projects!! | I Wear A Bow - Duration: 4:56.

Yes I'm in my pajamas right now.

Hi! I am Bonita!

So today we're going to learn how to make this big digital pattern that you can use

For anything, any projects like sewing, DIY project, or any craft project, or maybe room decor, anything! Just any.. any other things.. yeah..(?)

I learned it from Karen Kavett. So go check her video for the original lesson!

I will leave the link in the description box below or check this cards above, or at my right

This way, this way, this way.. yeah

So I won't keep this intro long, let's start the fun!

Let's open the photoshop.

Make new file, and I like to make the size in inches.

For the size is up to you.

It depends on how big you want your pattern is.

For this tutorial, I want to make a pattern that is approximately twice the size of A4

paper.

So hence mine is 15 inches and 20 inches.

Also make sure the resolution is 300 pixels.

Okay.

I want to make a star pattern, so I use this polygon tool.

Double click the canvas and it will open the settings.

Activate the star option, number of sides 5, and I like my indent sides by 30%.

Just ignore the width and height now.

It automatically made a small star.

I want a big star, so I deleted it.

Then click and drag on the canvas to make a big star.

Move it to the center.

And click ctrl+T to activate the Transform tool.

And then readjust the size.

Click Shift while you adjust it, so it will link the width and height.

Next right click the polygon layer and click rasterize layer.

Then I fill the star with black.

Now make another file with less than A4 paper size so it won't be cut when we will print

it later.

Like 7.5 inches and 10 inches.

Select all and then copy it, to the star file.

Then change the color with any contrasting color.

Move it to the corner.

And then copy it and move it the side.

And change the color with any other color so we can see the difference.

Copy it again and move it.

Just do it until it's full.

Now use magic wand tool, and click the first rectangle layer and make selection of it.

Now click the polygon layer and click ctrl+c to copy it.

And paste it to here.

Do this with another rectangle so we can copy all parts of star shape.

After that, deactivate these layer so we can see just one layer.

Now click blending options, and make the fill opacity zero.

Now add stroke in the inside position.

And the size is up to you.

Use black for printing.

And just right click and copy this layer style and paste it to other star layers.

Now if you activate the eyes you can see it's already like these.

Deactivate it again to save the star parts one by one.

Now it's up to you wheter you want it as JPEG or PDF.

For me, I like PDF for printing.

So yeah save it.

Star pattern part 1.

Okay.

And do it with other layers.

Save them.

Now this is how it turned out.

Now if you want to print it, dont't choose fit, choose actual size or shrink oversized

pages.

And then see the page setup and change it to A4 paper because my paper is A4.

And print.

Now after cut all the parts.

It's just a matter of assemble all of these like a puzzle, Karen said.

Then use tape to stick them together. And done!

So how we're going to use this?

Next video, so stay tuned!

So that is it for this video! If you found this video helpful, share this video!

And as always I will send you lotsa lotsa lotsa lots of love, peace, and courage. Bye and have a wonderful day!

Convenience of gift cards make them easy target of thieves - Duration: 2:09.

LOTS OF PEOPLE BUY AND RECEIVE

GIFT

CARDS .. BUT THIEVES ALSO LIKE

THEM.

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU...

... ABOUT HOW AVOID BECOMING A

VICTIM OF

A GIFT CARD SCAM.

You can find them just about

everywhere... and

they're easy and convenient gift

ideas. But

they've also become the target

of thieves.

One of the things when you get a

gift card, you

want to look at the back of it

and make sure that

the back of the gift card hasn't

been scratched off

Most gift cards have a three or

four digit PIN

under a silver scratch-off, used

to help verify a

card's balance.

Criminals could scratch off the

PIN number and

have recorded the gift card

numbers as well as

the PIN. That's the only

information they would

need to steal whatever balance

may have been

placed on that gift card. They

could check it over

and over and over until that

gift card is sold

As far as getting your money

back if you've

become a victim... Dunn says

don't count on it.

If you purchase it with that

card number already

scratched off then essentially

it's going to be

your word against the merchant's

in terms of

who's responsible

If you're buying a gift card,

you want to make

sure that the silver scratch-off

is in tact

Dunn says businesses can also do

their part to

secured especially

if it's something that we've

identified at a particular

store there's a pattern where

this has happened.

We know if some merchants that

keep

those cards completely locked up

and secured

and audited so they understand

how many

cards they have, what employees

have access

to them

Make Ethyl Propionate by Fischer Esterfication and Molecular Sieves with a Soxhlet extractor - Duration: 9:18.

Warning: Sulfuric and propionic acids are corrosive.

Wear gloves when handling them.

Ethanol is highly flammable.

Fire safety protocols must be in place.

Greetings fellow nerds.

I wanted to make more ethyl propionate so i'd have a good stock available in case i made more mistakes in my synthesis of pyrimethamine.

Now in a previous video we made ethyl propionate by the classic process of acid catalyzed fischer esterification between ethanol and propionic acid.

If you want to review that video you can check the video description.

The drawback of that method was that our raw yield was about 40% and that was likely inflated since we hadn't purified by distillation yet.

The reason why the yield was low was because the reaction is reversible.

The water can react with the ethyl propionate and produce propionic acid and ethanol again.

If we could remove the water we could drive the reaction forward.

Unfortunately we can't just distill the water out because the ethanol and the ethyl propionate azeotropes have even lower boiling points.

We'd never be able to selectively remove just the water.

We'd also carry out too much of our reactants and stop the reaction.

Now in a previous video i showed that we could use molecular sieves to dry alcohol

and some have asked if that could be used for fischer esterification.

Unfortunately we can't add the molecular sieves directly because the acids in the reaction would destroy them.

Luckily, for us, there is a workaround.

In a previous video I showed this apparatus, the soxhlet extractor.

For further information about it you can check the video description.

But briefly it allows us to condense vapor, dissolve or expose something to that condensate,

and then return the dissolved substance to the boiling flask.

In this video we're going to use it instead to selectively remove water with molecular sieves.

First we start with a erlenmeyer flask and add in 80 mL of propionic acid.

Then we add to that 100 mL of ethanol.

Normally you would remove any dissolved water first but in this case we don't have to as we'll be removing the water during our reaction.

Finally we need an acid catalyst and we'll use 4 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid.

The process so far is just like regular fischer esterification.

Now for the important difference, instead of a simple reflux apparatus,

we set up a soxhlet apparatus filled with molecular sieves 3A.

I have about 80 grams worth.

Mine is bagged with filter paper to prevent the beads from being sucked through the siphon tube and falling into the boiling flask.

The molecular sieves were previously dried on a hot plate at 250 celsius for three hours.

Now the amount of molecular sieves you have limits the size of your reaction.

Molecular sieves can hold about 22% of their mass in water.

So you have to calculate how much mass water that is and size your reaction to produce a roughly equal amount.

You also have to ensure you have enough volatile solvents to fill your soxhlet extractor.

If it doesn't fill high enough to activate the soxhlet siphon then the solvents won't properly return when they are dried.

I sized the quantity of chemicals earlier to match what i'm using here.

Okay once the apparatus is all assembled and the cooling water running, turn on the hotplate.

Gradually raise the temperature until it starts to reflux and condense into the soxhlet extractor.

You don't need a very high turnover rate.

What's happening is we're reacting the propionic acid with ethanol to form ethyl propionate and water.

The sulfuric acid acts as a catalyst.

Now as said before, the reaction is reversible so we can never get a good yield just at equilibrium.

The water reacts with the ethyl propionate and goes back to ethanol and propionic acid.

The soxhlet extractor helps us get around this.

The boiling mixture of ethanol, propionic acid, ethyl propionate and water forms low boiling azeotropes that rise up and condense into the soxhlet apparatus.

For those of you that don't know, or missed my video on fractional distillation, azeotropes are mixtures that boil together.

They behave almost like pure chemicals in that they boil and condense with the same composition.

You can't separate them by distillation alone.

Now i don't exactly know what azeotrope compositions form here.

Water and ethanol make one azeotrope but i found no data on ethyl propionate and the azeotropes it forms.

Whatever it is, I'm betting the the lowest boiling azeotrope between all three contains water.

Even if it's just a few percent water that's tremendously advantageous to us.

Molecular sieves are extremely good at extracting water from organic solvents

so any ethanol or ethyl propionate that condensed would be thoroughly dried and then returned to the boiling flask.

Where it reboils along with a bit more water.

By cycling the water, alcohols and esters around with the extractor,

we can gradually remove all the water and only the water,

without losing our alcohol or esters as we would if we just went with straight distillation.

It's a great trick, the only drawback is that it won't work if none of the low boiling azeotropes contain water.

Now at this point you might be wondering what happens with the acids.

Propionic acid and sulfuric acid are too polar and too high boiling so they don't vaporize and condense into the soxhlet apparatus.

This is very convenient for us as molecular sieves are destroyed by acids.

Thanks to the soxhlet extractor we can use them for the reaction without actually using them in the reaction.

In a way, we've built a mini chemical plant where we have two separate processes running.

Fischer esterification here, and water removal over here.

Anyway, I'll let this run overnight.

While molecular sieves are very effective they are also very slow and need time to work.

Okay here we are the next day and i've already turned off the heating.

Once it's cooled, we pour 100 ml of cold water into the soxhlet extractor.

This is to wash out the alcohol and ethyl propionate from the sieves for greater recovery.

Now give it a stir.

The water will now dissolve most of the components in our reaction mixture except ethyl propionate

which has very low solubility in water.

The ethyl propionate will then float on top like an oil allowing for convenient separation.

To do this we use a separatory funnel.

You can see the layer of ethyl propionate floating on top of the water.

Drain away the water first and then collect the ethyl propionate.

Now you might be wondering why i'm washing with water when i said water destroys ethyl propionate.

While the mixture is cold the reaction of water and ethyl propionate is very slow.

It's only when it's hot that the reverse reaction becomes a problem.

Nonetheless, when i store this i'll be sure to remove all traces of water.

And there it is, crude ethyl propionate.

The mass of this is 103g for a crude yield of 93%.

This is a tremendous improvement over the direct method that only gave 40%.

Now granted, this 93% is grossly impure, but so was the 40% of the original method so we can still compare them.

To improve purity somewhat i'm going to wash it again with 100mL of cold water.

The most likely impurity is ethanol which, while soluble in water is also soluble in ethyl propionate

and usually doesn't wash out in a single run.

Let me separate them out again.

And there we go.

This is 90g or about 81% yield.

We're still ahead of the original method.

Now i'm going to store my crude ethyl propionate over molecular sieves to remove the water.

In my future experiments i'll need it water free.

There is likely still a few percent ethanol remaining but that isn't an issue for what i want it for.

If you want to remove the ethanol you can fractionally distill the ethyl propionate.

In anycase i'm actually quite pleased with how well the soxhlet extractor with molecular sieves worked.

My bet that water was in the low boiling azeotrope paid off.

And this procedure wasn't even optimized yet.

I used twice as much ethanol as necessary because i was roughly copying the old method.

If the water is so effectively removed then we don't need an excess of ethanol.

A stoichiometric amount might work better and give even higher recoverable yield.

Yet another option would be to use an excess of propionic acid and have complete conversion of ethanol.

With no water or ethanol present one could directly fractionally distill pure ethyl propionate from the mixture.

No need for water washing and additional molecular sieve drying.

So many options are available.

This procedure doesn't waste any new chemicals either, the molecular sieves used in the soxhlet extractor can be dried and reused.

This is what i love about having a new tool for chemistry.

The tool itself might change just a single step.

But it can radically change your procedures in ways that open up whole new pathways.

I wish i had more time to try out all these new pathways but i need to move on to my next experiment.

Anyway, so that was how you use a soxhlet extractor and molecular sieves to drive forward the fischer esterification of ethanol and propionic acid.
