Resident Evil 7 (PS4) - REVIEW - A's GAMING moments - Duration: 4:37.
Resident Evil 7 was the story of Ethan Winters, a guy who's wife went missing over three years
ago, but it turned out she was somewhere deep down in the heart of Louisiana.
However, when trying to find her, things soon turned pear shaped, as he stumbled across
the insane local family called The Bakers.
The game felt like it was split into two parts.
The first half was all about trying to escape from Bakers, while trying to slowly defeat
each of these crazy family members.
The second half of was more about getting to the root of the bigger story going on here.
You see, these people weren't just insane, they were infected, like any good Resident
Evil enemy should be.
The clue's in the subtitle- biohazard, as once again, all of this horror is a result
of a biological disaster.
The family were definitely the star of show here.
They were part Texas Chainsaw Massacre, part Jigsaw killer.
Each of them provided a real threat and some of the best moments of the game were those
when you were simply trying to hide from them, or trying to run away and put as many doors
between you and them as possible.
Because if you got caught they would seriously fuck you up.
I didn't play through the game in VR, but I imagine that some of these gory moments
would be pretty uncomfortable to experience.
While I don't think the story was actually that interesting, in fact it seemed like a
rip off of a Twilight Zone episode, it was intriguing to see what direction the game
was gonna take.
It was the kind of game where you wanted to read all of the notes and files, to get a
bit more information about what was going on.
In fact one of my favourite moments was looking at a photograph of a helicopter, only to just
be able to see on the tail that infamous Umbrella logo.
This was exciting stuff!
I don't exactly know how the game fits in with the rest of the Resident Evil universe,
or whether it's just a reboot in an alternate version of the world, but it was always fun
trying to find these little references to the other games.
In fact, I was amazed by how much this felt like a traditional Resident Evil.
From the original teaser of the game it felt like the series was getting a complete overhaul-
making it more like some of the more successful modern horror games, like SOMA, P.T. or Outlast.
But no, this was classic Resident Evil.
You had green herbs to heal with.
You had save rooms complete with relaxing music and trunks to store items in.
It had careful resource management, elaborate key and lock systems, requiring a lot of
backtracking, so by the end, you knew the place like the back of your hand.
In the first Resident Evil, I always thought that the star of the show was the mansion
itself.
Each area had it's own distinct atmosphere and look, and I think that the same's true
here with the Baker house.
And the game knows it- making sure it becomes a memorable video game setting.
You even got your classic dose of dodgy Resident Evil lines like, "Where's everyone going,
bingo?" or "I've got this!".
Here you had the dumb question, "What am I going to do with a knife?"
Unfortunately I do have to say though that most of the standard enemy weren't that scary.
In fact the old lady in the wheelchair, who would just pop up every now and again was
the creepiest part of the game because she never really did anything, she just sat there-
watching you.
The main enemy you did fight were these black mould creatures that just weren't scary or,
to be honest, interesting.
Hiding from the Baker family was by far more tense than the almost first person shooter
like sections that had you just blasting these slime things in the head.
The game did do a great job of making you want to play through it multiple times.
Not only did it have moment where you have to make a pretty significant choice that branches
the story into two different endings, it also had a way of making every encounter a little
bit unique.
For example, in one of the early fights in the garage, you could either shoot Jack Baker.
You could try and find some car keys, to then get in the car and run him over with.
Or of course, he could get in the car and try and run you over.
Every play though then could turn out slightly differently, with its own set of surprises.
Plus, on completing the game you unlocked the new difficulty mode called Madhouse- which
is a pretty good name for it.
Because it was fucking ridiculous.
It did add a cool new feature where you needed to use cassette tapes in order to save, just
like the ink ribbon system from the older games.
But boy did it prove a challenge.
Resident Evil is a series that whenever it tries to do something new, it does a great
job of it.
Well, OK not always, but for the most part.
Seeing the franchise return to its roots and to it's original survival-horror mentality
paves the way for a pretty exciting change in direction for the series.
There's plenty of DLC for this game coming soon, so it's one that I'm happily going to
be putting a lot more time into.
I just wish the main menu kept the classic Resident Evil voice intro.
"RESIDENT EVIL 7!"
