Brexit Will Hurt Local Manufacturing But Consumers Will Get Cheaper Imported Cars - Duration: 2:38.Concerns about Brexit continue to soar as it appears increasingly likely that the United Kingdom will have to leave the European Union without a deal
Car manufacturers with production facilities across the UK have expressed serious concerns about a no-deal Brexit in recent months
Most recently, the chief executive of global parts supplier Unipart John Neill told audiences at the World Economic Forum that a no-deal Brexit could result in a "cascade of failure" in the supply chain, Forbes reports
Financial analysts have been worried about Britain leaving the European Union for years, well before there was ever serious talk about such a move being made
Economist Patrick Minford who doubles as a professor of economics at Cardiff Business School has been particularly outspoken about the impacts of Brexit
Speaking in 2012, Minford said that the UK's automotive manufacturing industry would be destroyed
Minford has continued to state this in the years' since and in 2016, reiterated what he believes the impacts of Brexit will be
"If we left the EU, it seems likely that we would mostly eliminate manufacturing, leaving mainly industries such as design, marketing and hi-tech," he stated
Not only could Brexit ruin manufacturing in the UK, it is also going to result in cheaper imports of vehicles built overseas
Minford says that this could raise living standards for those in the UK.However, if Britons were to buy cheaper vehicles in greater numbers, traffic congestion would naturally increase
A recent study from INRIX and the Center of Economics and Business Research determined that traffic congestion in the UK will soon cost the economy £21
4billion ($28.14 billion) a year."We now know that congestion will continue to have serious consequences for national and city economies, businesses and citizens in the years to come
If we think this problem is bad now, we are in for a terrible shock come 2030," INRIX European director Matt Simmons said

2019 Ford Ranger: FULL REVIEW | Back and Better Than Ever! - Duration: 25:40.Good afternoon YouTube! it's been about eight years since the last Ranger rode off the factory floor
But during that time gap there must have been a lot of pent-up demand
Considering just how many of you have been clamoring for us to check out this all-new version
Well we've finally got our hands on one which is no small task given how quickly they've been selling
so we're happy to be out here at Jack Kain Ford with this fully loaded Ranger lariat and
of course if you're in the market for any new Ford be sure to stop by their dealership or
Visit them via their website which we provided a link to in the video description
So with Ford back in the midsize game let's find out if Toyota and Chevy should be scared
Beginning things here on the outside Ford has. Made the Ranger looked nothing like the f-150 but handsome in its own right
That starts up front where we have an aggressive design that is much less boxy than its big brother
Now of course the grille does change depending on the trim as well as the packages chosen
So, while this lariat would normally have a chrome grille we have the dark grey finish that comes with the sport appearance package
The lower trims lose the bars in the middle
And for your XLT it will be traced in silver while it will be fully black on the base XL
The bumper would also be body color on XLT and lariat, but again that Sport Package as the extra contrast
Now turning over to the headlights unlike much of the competition we've got LEDs here on the lariat
That goes for both the low and high beams as well as the daytime running lights
but of course the lower trims do come with halogens
Additionally you will find fog lights on most rangers
So for those of you who don't already know this ranger has been on sale in other countries for several years now
But to me the side is the only place where I see much of resemblance to the international version
Now as far as the cab and bed configurations are concerned ford
keeps it simple
you either get the super cab with the long six-foot bed or you get this super crew with the short five foot bed and
Then moving around to the back this is where it looks the most similar to the f-150
since it has Ranger stamped into the tailgate as well as really premium looking full LED tail lights
So overall Ford has done a great job with this exterior
It manages to look both rugged and upscale, which is a combination that most of the rivals have struggled with
Just like the grille and bumpers these 17-inch wheels come with the same dark gray finish with the Sport Package
Without that package you actually find larger 18-inch contrast, alloys as the standard option for lariat
going down a rung XLT gets you 17 inch alloys that look like a miniaturized version of the f-150 platinum and
Then the XL starts off with 16-inch steel wheels
Coming up to the mirrors they are power adjusting on the XLT
But you will still have to go up to the lariat if you want to add body color heating power folding or blind spot monitoring
Now that system is included as part of Ford's co-pilot 360 safety system package which
also includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
Lane Keeping Assist and Auto high beam headlights
This grouping is standard on XLT and lariat plus adapter cruise control can be added via the technology package
Now heading back around to the rear let's talk towing since all Rangers come with the same engine the max tow rating is
7,500 pounds across the lineup when you select the trailer tow package
This does exceed both the Tacoma and Colorado
As
Far as the bet is concerned it is quite large with plenty of tie downs
Though you will be missing the easy lowering tailgate and power outlets that some of the rivals have
And finally we will end things here at the 18 gallon fuel tank
while it is smaller than what most of the competition gives you the excellent fuel economy actually gives it a better fuel range of
414 miles with two wheel drive
But anyways that's everything to look at for the exterior so now let's see if Ford has set the new benchmark for mid-sized cabins
So on the new Ranger you're going to find sports smart entry system standard on the Lariat trim
However remote start is optional on both the Lariat and the XLT
Of course like all other Fords you get inside the vehicle all you have to do is just grab the handle
Alrighty so checking out the cabin of the all-new Ranger and you can see this has a
totally distinct look from the f-150
Now of course like all trucks there are a ton of different material and color combinations you can get
So starting out on your bass XL trim you got your choice between cloth or vinyl
seating but you'll only have the color option of black and then going out to the XLT you get premium cloth seating in
ebony or medium stone
finally, when you go up to the lariat like this model you do get the leather seating and that comes in Ebony or medium stone
colors as well
Now turning over here to your door trim it is pretty nicely appointed
On the Lariat we do have a leather up material with a nice stitching detail for your armrests as well as above it
But this top part is hard touch
As far as the window controls the driver's window is one touch automatic
And then coming down here to the seat
you do have the 8 way power seat here on the Lariat and it is also available on the XLT
And as you can see you do have the power sliding as well as 2-way power lumbar support
but like the chevy colorado and GMC canyon the actual back portion is still manually adjusting on lower terms it is
4-way manual adjusting
Now checking out the actual seating material itself like I said this is leather trim and all the Lariat we do have a really nice
Stitching detail as well as a Ranger embossed into this part here
Also in this particular model we do have the running boards which definitely helps getting in to be a lot easier
So like I was already saying the Rangers interior really doesn't look anything like the f-150s at all
But at least as far as the materials are concerned there's not a real big decrease
so across your upper - here on the lariat trim
We've got more of that soft touch plastic with a really nice authentic stitching detail
now this would be hard touch on the lower trims and
Then the same kind of goes for this area as well this changes depending on the trim level
so only the Lariat gets the gray finish whereas the lower trends get a silver finish or a full black finish
This far is the lower areas they are all our touch
however that's to be expected in this class and everything fits together with a really really solid feel
Now to start the Ranger if you have the lariat trim just press the button
When you do you will see an 8 inch display fire up here on the Lariat
This is also available in the 301a package for the XLT
Now looking over here at the gauges this is the fancier arrangement and this comes on the lariat only
And you do basically have two multifunction displays on both sides of a traditional speedometer
So each side of the steering wheel has some corresponding buttons so you can just cycle through various things like your digital
Speedometer and of course if you want to have a more traditional look you can still pull up a tachometer there
And then on this side you've mostly got things related to media so you've got your entertainment functions like your audio
As well as your navigation and your phone controls
Now heading back here to the steering wheel we do have electric power steering and
You will find a nice leather wrapped wheel on the 301a XLT and standard on the lariat
just like the actual dashboard depending on
Which model you choose you have a different type of trim through here so of course on the Lariat it is dark grey
Like I was mentioning these sets of buttons correspond with the two displays and then on our particular model we do have adaptive cruise control
that came in the optional Technology Package which is available on both XLT and Lariat
As far as the wheel itself it is manually tilt and telescoping though it is not heated and I do also want to mention
that we have the optional rain sensing wipers which come in a 501a package on the illyrian
Now moving on to the important topic of storage the Ranger definitely has plenty despite it being a relatively small truck
So starting out over here true center console
initially it doesn't look too big
However once you reach your hand in there you realize it's very very deep and it actually goes in past this piece
Which just sends up. Here this part is not actually removable even though it looks like it is
And then in front of that we've got two cupholders
As well as another really really large and deep thin here
And as you can see that also contains two USB ports as well as two 12 volt outlets
but you're not gonna find any wireless charging like we see in the tacoma that, we were just in last week
But anyways coming back here to the shifter it is a nice traditional shifter
So you can pull back for drive now you can go back once more into a sport mode
Where you can shift manually with these toggles
Going into reverse of course you will find a standard backup camera and we do also have active
Trajectory as well as parking sensors in the front and in the rear for the Lariat
And then like the tacoma we do have a traditional handbrake
Now nice to the shelter you will find this knob it's just a very simple knob to control your different four-wheel-drive settings
And then in front of that you're gonna find several different buttons
Basically this one just activates your trailering mode
this big button with the a turns on and off your auto start/stop system
This one defeats your parking sensors and this one defeats your traction control
All right so now moving on to the climate control as you can see
We've got the dual zone automatic setup this comes standard on the Lariat
Or it is also available on the XLT through the 301a package
But as you can see it is very simple to use
You just press the auto button and you can control most of the functions here
Through these different toggles however a few of the functions you do have to control up here in the display through the climate section
Like your different zones for example
And you can't control everything else up here if you prefer for whatever reason
And then as far as your heated seats
these of course are also standard on the Lariat but you have to get the 302a to get them on the XLT
But anyways now that brings us up
Here to our audio system now the Ranger does come standard with a six speaker sound system across all the different trim levels
However here on the Lariat
501 a package we do have the optional Bang & Olufsen 10 speaker sound system so let's go ahead and take a listen to that
I'm very impressed by this sound system honestly this has got to be the best sound system I've heard in one of these small trucks
But anyways now that brings us up here to our sink 3 system so let's go ahead and take a quick look now
we're in a bit of a time crunch today so I'm just gonna real quickly go through a few of these features of
Course this is the same sync 3 version that has been in all four products for several years now
So you've got your home screen then you can just click into different items to expand them
Coming into the navigation part
The integrated navigation system is optional via the technology package on both the XLT and lariat
but even if you don't get this system you still have
Both Android auto and apple carplay and that's standard so long as you have the 8 inch
Display versus the little small non touch display
And last thing I want to mention is that you do have the 4G Wi-Fi hotspot that
comes here and your fourth
pass connect
and when you click on that this is where you'll find your password and be able to turn it on and off and monitor your
data usage and whatnot
But anyways that's the main gist of the sync 3 system however we do have a much more detailed tech help video
available for those of you who want to learn more
The link to that will be provided in the video description now
Moving on up to the mirror it is auto dimming here on the Lariat and
just like a lot of features in this vehicle it is also available on the XLT
And it go along with that you do have your three universal remotes
Now somewhat interestingly a moonroof is actually not available on any version of the Ranger
However you cannot get a moonroof on the Colorado or the canyon either so it's not exactly a problem for the class
I guess you can say
But overall I quite like the cabin of the new Ranger has definitely got a refined feeling in here especially here on this lariat trim
And overall it's just a lot different than
what the Ranger used to be but this is definitely the direction that the class is moving in
But anyways now go ahead and hand it off to Mason who will finish up the rest of the cabin
In the back of the all-new 2019 ford ranger double cab you're going to find a large amount of space compared to its rivals
Is technically rated at 34.5 inches of rear legroom and 38.3 inches of rear
headroom which does make it larger than the Toyota Tacoma
Now turning over here to the door trim it is really nice for a pickup
Truck so you do have leatherette where your armrest as well as an area above it and you do have a nice silver door handle
Now below that since this is a pickup truck you do have plenty of door storage so you have a bottle holder as
Well as a little storage cubby
Now the seats themselves are a really nice design they have a
Stitching details all the way through them and they are very very comfortable and to get in just use a standard running boards
Now in the center the Ranger is equipped nicer than most of the class
so down here in the center area you do have a little storage area and
Down below that you do have two smart charging USB ports as well as a household style outlet
Which is really nice because the toyota tacoma I was just in didn't have any connections at all back here
Now you do also have a center armrest does fall down nicely it does leather-wrapped and has some cupholders in the end
In addition to that your rear window is slight manual sliding so you can just push this little lever and slide it right
Up top we do have some LED dome lighting a really nice headliner and an assist grip and cut hook
So like I mentioned the Ranger is bigger than most of its rivals
so
even with the seat scooted all the way back I still have probably four to five inches of rear legroom and my feet can easily
Slide up over the seat
But overall I'm extremely impressed by the Rangers rear seat
Like I said most in the class don't really give you very many features and this rear
seat is not in addition to being spacious it, also has plenty of luxury features and it feels just like a baby f150
it's definitely a great thing
Now like I mentioned on the other side the seats do fold up
So you have to do is locate this little strap down here by the floor and pull on it and it will fold right up
And once you do you will notice that it does fold in one piece and
Under the seats you do have plenty of storage so you have this bin right here
Which is probably six to eight inches deep you fit a lot of stuff
down here and it's also hidden from view so if you have anything valuable you can put it back here and
On this side you have the same thing just a little smaller
and to fold it back down just grab this little strap again and it folds right back down
now in addition to that you can also fold the rear seatbacks so grab this little strap and
they do fold all the way down and
It doesn't look like there's much storage back there but this is an option if you need that extra capability
Now we will talk about the pricing of this particular Ranger in just a minute
And over here on the passenger side we do have the same lovely seat with Ranger embossing as well as a nice stitching detail and
it is also power adjusting on this loaded lariat
on the other trims that would be man
Now in front of the passenger we do have impressive material so we have this trim piece here
As well as a stitched and padded dashboard
Now down below that we do have a glove box
It is nicely dampened and what as you can see once you get inside there is plenty of space
Now up top we do have a Sun Visor with mirror and light and it does also detach and it does have an extension
But anyway guys that pretty much sums up all the rear areas of the ranger so now let's go ahead and talk about the powertrain
All righty so let's go ahead and talk a bit about the powertrain options
Now the Ford Ranger just things a little bit different from most of the rival is actually quite a bit different
For does not do two tiers most of them offer a basic four-cylinder and then an upgraded v6
For it actually splits the difference and they go with a turbo four-cylinder across all the trims it is a 2.3
liter EcoBoost
270 horsepower and a 310 pound feet of torque, which is definitely more in line with the upper
engines of the rivals
but of course you get this on the base model as well
Ford also includes a 10 speed automatic and you can get two or four-wheel drive of course
And then for your fuel economy Florida really does well here it's a class-leading
against all the engines regardless of its the face or the upgraded engine and it even beats the Colorado and Canyon diesel engines
the rating actual numbers are 21 City 26 highway 23 combined for the 4x2 and
Then 20 City 24 highway 22 combined for the 4x4 and that's especially
Impressive because it does have pretty much more power than all the rivals as well that is correct
Now unfortunately we're not going to be driving the
Ranger today this is a sold unit we were told by at the dealer that
It won't there won't be sellable units here at this dealer until March
So we decided to definitely come on in here and give you all a look at this vehicle even though this is
Already owned by somebody yeah he's going to be picking it up tomorrow morning so it's very shortly as well
So with the onew Ranger you do have a pretty class competitive price scaling so it starts out at twenty four thousand
three hundred dollars for the Excel super cab
and then as you move up the trims you have the XLT which goes up to twenty seven nine forty and then you have the
Lariat which is the top trim and that is thirty two thousand two hundred and ten dollars
now if you want to upgrade to the full
Four-door super Crew model it is going to cost you around twenty two hundred dollars across all of the trims and the four-wheel drive is
going to be another additional charge on top of that
Now as far as how this particular Ranger is equipped this is a fully loaded basically fully loaded
Ranger so this is the top end lariat model with the four doors now
We do have the optional 501 a group
Which adds an eighteen hundred dollar charge to that and we
Also have running boards on the outside for six hundred bucks as well as the sport appearance package for nine hundred and
all told that plus the
1095 dollar destination charge this particular model comes in at $42805
Which as Mason said is just about the maximum price that you can pay for the 2019 Ranger
Well guys we hope you enjoyed watching one of the first in-depth looks at the 2019 Ford Ranger Lariat

latest automotive delicacies!

Never Buy a New Car, Unless - Duration: 6:14.rev up your engine's, Joan says scotty you always say don't buy a new car, but
I'm planning on buying a Tacoma and keep it forever, should I still go for a new one
or should I trying to find a good use Tacoma instead, I'm a fan of buying used
cars, I bought nothing but used cars my whole life, I'm cheap and I know if a
new one costs 30 and I can get a good used one for five or six when it's 8 or
10 years old, that's the way I'm going, I've done that my whole life, but my son
last year bought a brand new Tacoma truck, he wanted me to find him I could use one
I started looking around and he said, ah dad forget it
I'm gonna drive the thing for 20-30 year whatever I'm just going to buy a new one, one the prices
of the used Tacomas are high cuz there's
such well-built trucks and their so popular, and two if you're gonna buy a
brand new truck, he didn't buy the v6 one that was expensive, he bought the basic
four cylinder one, he figured if I'm keeping it for 30 years it's not costing me
that much each year for paying for it so,
sometimes it's not a bad idea if you pick a vehicle that's gonna last a long
time like a Toyota Tacoma, and you know I'm gonna keep that thing for ever,
absolutely nothing wrong with doing it that way, and contrary if you really want
to get a car that's not known as being all that well,
definitely lease it instead of buying it if you want to get a BMW or a Jaguar,
don't buy one lease it, cuz then you're only gonna lose that amount of money and no
more, rav 2002 says hello my wife and I are looking to buy a
bigger vehicle and I was thinking an 07 or 08 Yukon Denali all-wheel
drive, we live in Michigan that's why I want four wheel drive or all-wheel drive,
if you have suggestions please help me yeah well I got lots of suggestions and
the first one is, don't buy that yukon denali, i got customers bought those
things and there were lemons from the get-go, some of them had transmission
problems with less than 40,000 miles on them, their terrible vehicles as time goes
on, the problem is you want something big and
if you buy something big, especially if it's american
you can't buy a 07 or 08 you can't buy an 11-12 year old vehicle, they
just don't hold up over time, now if you see any of the Toyotas or any of the
Honda's that are big enough for you, you can go back in those days, because those
things can go 200,300,400,000 miles they can last a long time, but not in a
Yukon, your problem is if you want something that holds you
know a whole bunch of people, you got to decide how many people you want to hold cuz
let's say you got a regular family, hey you can always fit them in a Toyota
Highlander, that's a great SUV, I got customers with them that have 400-500,000
miles but if you're
looking for something that holds like seven-eight people, then you're kind of
in a no-man's land, because the only people that really make that stuff are
the Americans and if you're gonna do that at
least go forward because they're a lot better made than the GM stuff is, big jake
big jake says hi Scotty it's cold out any concerns about today's
gas blends freezing in a modern car if the tank is low, I've never heard of anyone
having frozen gas, even our dads all told about it, yeah I guess used to freeze
in the old days, you get water in the gas tank and it freezes and freeze
up on it, but it's not something that you really have to worry about these days
for one main reason, next time you buy gas take a look at the gas pump and it
probably says, may contain 10% ethanol, that means it generally does contain 10%
ethanol, ethanol is alcohol it's pretty much dried gas, that's the
stuff that we used to put in, so it's already added in and you really don't
have to worry about having water in because that alcohol will absorb any of
the water that's already in the system, and you won't have to worry about it for
that reason, big boy says Scotty what you thoughts on
Kia being the fifth most reliable car company and is it even true, here's the
thing about reading that stuff about reliable cars, you can't believe what
half the people in the world say because they have ulterior motives, they might be
being paid by Kia, they might be an advertising company that's just flat-out
gonna say whatever the company that's paying them to say, or their gonna go
do a survey of people that work at Kia who knows what, they never give you
the information, and what does it mean by reliable, you talking about 10-15 years, are
they talking about 10 days of ownership like
initial quality, which means absolutely nothing that's a bunch of nonsense,
I saw one the other day and they even were rating cars that I know are
absolute trash, Chrysler's as being well built cars, I mean a lot of it is just
total nonsense, you need to find a guy like me, a mechanic who's been working
on it for 51 years and works on all types of cars, so he'll tell you the truth
because like, say you go to a guy and the only
cars that he works on are Jaguars, of course he's gonna say Jaguars are good cars,
because that's the only car he works on that's how he makes a living, I work on all
the cars, there's some I won't even work on cuz they're so bad and they're so
expensive, that I won't even work on them but I work on generally all the
different cars out there, I'll tell you the truth I've got no vested interest in it,
be USA, scotty and community I'm dying to know if I got scammed with a
Craigslist car flipper, I bought an 08 Scion tC with 83 thousand miles
for forty six hundred dollars cash, the seller wasn't the same person on the title, which
has $1,800 as the purchase price, well obviously you got ripped off, if the
previous guy only paid $1,800 for the car and you paid 4600, something is
fishing here, what you'd want to do is, well that's probably too late now cuz the
guy's long gone, he's got your cash so you'll probably never see the guy again,
but for your own peace of mind, do one of those Carfax type checks and see it's
got the real mileage, when you get the CARFAX most states allow them to show
the state inspection each year, and see each year what the mileage was to see if
it's a real mileage, see if the thing was totaled in a wreck cuz if the previous one
was 1800 and a scion is a Toyota and they
go for top dollar, and if it was ten years old and it only sold for $1,800
with that mileage, it would be fishy I think that the title is probably a
reconditioned or a flood car, something like that, so do the CARFAX just for
your own thing, and next time you know look at the title first before you buy
it if it says that don't even buy the thing,
so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos, remember to
ring that Bell!

The DeLorean paradox: how it failed and became a legend - Duration: 17:40.Let's go back in time.
'We've gone from main engine start, we have main engine start."
This was the future of cars in 1981, and when the DeLorean DMC-12 began production with gull-wing
doors, gullwing as in gulls. Gullwing doors, doors in unpainted stainless steel panels,
because paint is for cars that could never convincingly play a time machine, the future
looked pretty great from every angle.
And then on October 19, 1982, that timeline ended.
I've got a spoiler: this is not a DeLorean.
So, like a lot of people, I first heard about the DeLorean from Back to the Future.
And this fictional version of the car was wildly popular.
But then you find out that the real DeLorean failed less than two years after production began.
How does that happen?
Somehow it is still such a popular car that DeLorean clubs meet around the world just
to talk about how great it is.
I have a green light.
The DeLorean story goes from Hill Valley in 1955, to Margaret Thatcher's parliament,
to war-torn Belfast, Ireland, to a very rainy parking lot near Washington, DC.
That story goes a ton of places, even where I'm driving right now in this resoundingly
mediocre vehicle.
When you get into this story, it turns out that the DeLorean really is a time machine.
"Are you, are you in it right now?"
"I am in it right now, lemme see if I can flip the camera around.
Right?
I can do that, right?
This entire car is 100% original.
I like the DMC logo up there, that's one thing that's unique.
The door ajar light has the gull wing on it."
"You have to brag about the gullwing door in the door ajar light."
The DeLorean's many quirks are a collection of design choices and manufacturing irregularities.
Legendary Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro created the design in 1974 and refined it
through 1978.
Early brainstorms for a mid-engine became a rear engine, and the stainless panels were
smoothed out a bit.
Lotus, via legendary racer and engineer Colin Chapman, provided the car's
engineering.
The engine was a Renault V6.
The gullwing doors were in the legacy of cars like the Bricklin, a failed gullwing indie
car, as well as gullwings by Mercedes.
Those gullwing doors required unusual adaptations, like a cryogenically twisted torsion bar
and tiny windows - called tollbooth windows, because they were just large enough to pay
a toll.
But it actually wasn't hard to get in and out of those gullwing doors.
"Anybody watching this can see it on my YouTube channel, it's just Geek Therapy
Radio.
And the myth is that gullwing doors, you can't park in any parking lot because if someone
parks too close to you, you're trapped.
Doors, as you see, hinge in the roof.
So the doors go up more than they go out."
"Rejoice!
Rejoice!"
DeLorean fans are always debating about the car's quality.
If you say the engine is underpowered, they'll say, well it wasn't that underpowered for
cars of the time.
If you say it was heavy, they'll say, ah well, look at these Porsches, they were actually
heavier or the same weight.
So the arguing?
It's a rite of passage if you are a DeLorean owner.
"These guys are all awesome."
"Rejoice!"
"Everytime I see someone post a picture of a DeLorean on Reddit, you go into the comments,
and it's usually people posting misinformation, other people ragging on the car for whatever
reason, and then of course you get like one or two people, usually - sometimes me - who
then start attacking, going no, here's the real history, and it's like, we're arguing
on the internet, who cares?"
"And it's Reddit!"
"Right, and it's Reddit.
You like the car, you don't like the car you don't like the car, BFD."
So, whatever you think of the car, the DeLorean's design was improbable.
But its creation?
That, that was almost impossible.
"I remember having a conversation with John once when we were walking around the plant.
I said to him, you know, what is it about the car, John, that is sacrosanct to you?
He said, well, there are three things: stainless steel, gullwing doors, rear engine.
You can do what you like with anything else.
My name's Barrie Wills.
I was actually the first employee hired out of the UK car industry into DeLorean.
I'd read about John, of course.
He oozed charisma, he was charming, he was smart,
and above all, he demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the auto industry."
We are here.
It's a liquor store.
Cutty Sark Whiskey — the whiskey with a boat.
I have this whiskey because John Z. DeLorean and his car were used in this ad to help sell it.
He was that glamorous already.
John DeLorean was a superstar.
He started as an engineer.
This 1958 patent - one of many - was for a slip drive transmission that he designed.
But he found bigger roles.
In 1964, he was considered instrumental in creating the Pontiac GTO.
The car was young, and cool.
It remade Pontiac's reputation and made a reputation for John DeLorean.
And by the 70s, he was in line to be President of General Motors.
Being President of GM at that time was like being next in line to be king.
Here's a bump.
But DeLorean was chafing at it.
He thought it was too corrupt and he thought they were too square.
He was a celebrity and he was a rebel.
So he quit.
But he had stayed long enough to make a reputation for himself.
This is him in 1974, a year after he quit GM (critics, of course, said that he was fired).
Long hair, cool shirt, a new look.
He said he had surgery due to either an injury or a jawbone impact correction.
Critics said was a makeover, the same way he madeover Pontiac.
He also married his third wife, the internationally famous Cristina Ferrare, who he said he'd
literally first seen in the pages of Vogue.
He was the celebrity maverick who fired GM.
And that gave him the mystique to take them on.
Hope you're enjoying that authentic turn signal sound.
I've actually composed a song for later in this video.
For when we hit our deepest emotional depth.
It's a sad song.
I'm going to play it later.
The new DeLorean Motor Company had glamorous investors like The Tonight Show's Johnny
Carson as well as a unique plan to get investments from car dealers.
"This is a presentation of the DeLorean Motor Company.
Our requirements are one: the dealer or his dealer associates must own $25,000 in DeLorean
motor company common stock."
But a brand new factory and car required north of $100 million in investment.
That meant government cash.
There were a few potential timelines.
Early flirtations with a Saudi Arabian investor and the state of Pennsylvania fizzled.
A plan with Puerto Rico got further, offering a package close to $60 million if DeLorean
raised $25 million first (and spent it first).
But Northern Ireland, and therefore the UK, eventually paid up around $120 million, depending
how you split loans, grants, and guarantees.
The location of the factory?
It was difficult.
"It was 72 acres of...there were cattle on it.
Half a mountain had to be relocated from outside Belfast to put enough footings onto the site
to construct the buildings.
Put the steel framework up, apart from the fact that two streams had to be diverted."
This was with an insanely fast 18 month time frame and an even more unstable political
environment.
All this was during "The Troubles," the violent sectarian conflict in which Northern Ireland
was fighting over whether they should be part of the Republic of Ireland or the UK.
And this is why DeLorean got the money.
The British government wanted to add stability and jobs to a violent, unemployment-plagued
region.
Barrie Wills says that it actually didn't impact production that much, but riots did
spill into the factory, and they had to consider stuff like hunger strikes
in their production timeline.
"As each hunger striker died, the Catholic, Republican workforce, would be called out
for a day of mourning.
The director of personnel was given a program by the Northern Ireland office of the likely
death days of the hunger strikers so that we could plan ahead.
Like, terrible."
Any other company would have let off the gas in this situation, but DeLorean did not have
a choice.
They were shipping 1,800 cars in October of 1981.
They had to keep up with their funding obligations.
Hire a large workforce, pay bonuses, make royalty payments.
It was a lot.
They pulled it all off really quickly.
This DeLorean Motor Company infomercial shows the factory at work.
But they needed constant cash to keep this going - from car sales or the British government.
They needed perfection, but they got reality instead.
Though the company had turned a slight profit by some measures, there were also almost 5,000
unsold cars by January of 1982.
They were very pricey at $25,000, and they'd gotten a bad reputation.
A 2,000 car recall and performance issues in the first batch didn't help.
"The first cars that were shipped out to the states were not good cars.
We were under immense pressure.
The government had made it clear that we weren't going to get anymore money."
By February, 1982, DMC was in receivership - basically a forced bankruptcy.
By May, production stopped.
DeLorean had dipped back for money before, and the UK, led by conservative Margaret Thatcher,
didn't want to give more money to an American company.
Rumors of fishy corporate structures, credible accusations of fraud, and possible millions
in diverted money didn't help make the sale.
So all that had to have made it harder to raise cash in those last ditch efforts.
Now DeLorean fans, they will tell you that the company failed because of the recession,
and bad weather, and exchange rates, and they have a really good point — all that stuff hurt
the company.
But it might not have doomed the company had it not taken on so much risk, again and again.
All those bets?
Eventually DeLorean was going to lose one of them.
And that was all before the flashiest scandal of all happened.
In autumn, DeLorean was arrested for trying to raise money in an unusual way - agreeing
to smuggle millions of dollars worth of cocaine.
"It was horrific.
I was told the night before that we all believed that John was raising the money.
We didn't know where it was coming from.
I got a call hours before John's arrest, to say, bring the workforce together tomorrow, I'm
sorry Barrie, it's all over, it's liquidation."
DeLorean was eventually acquitted because of entrapment.
He was never convicted of smuggling or fraud.
So you have to make a judgment call.
When you see this man, do you see a genius?
Or an actor, playing a part?
Maybe he was both.
John Z. DeLorean, why did your car have to die?
But your dream lives on.
Let me show you why.
Alright, so if you don't know what Big Lots is, it got its store as an overstock store.
Bargain bin place.
And when DeLorean went bankrupt, the parent company of Big Lots actually bought all the
DeLorean parts.
We're talking like, the literal stainless steel panels.
And all those parts went into a warehouse.
It looked like the end of the DeLorean story.
And then a movie came out.
What is the comment you get over and over again?
"This is what makes time travel possible."
"After the movie, it was all about the flux capacitor."
"Flux capacitor."
"Flux capacitor."
"Where's the flux capacitor?
You know after a while you just get worn down and have to make a flux capacitor."
"Flux capacitor."
"Flux capacitor."
"Flux capacitor."
"Flux cap-" "McFly!
McFly or Back to the Future.
But usually it's the McFly."
The car in the movie?
It was a fantasy.
It had to go 88 miles to travel in time, and the original DeLorean speedometer doesn't
go that high.
They had to modify it for the movie.
But little differences like that didn't stop the DeLorean from becoming a time machine.
After the movie, two communities developed in the vacuum left by DeLorean Motor Company's
failure.
Today, there's a strong international roster of companies able to service DeLoreans and
supply factory original parts, even though they weren't a part of the original company.
And there are also clubs around the world where owners can support each other.
"Right now I'm the president of the DeLorean Midatlantic club. We have about 80 members
in the club right now.
We do events 4 times a year."
One of Tiffany's first events was a DeLorean MidAtlantic pigrimage to John Z. DeLorean's
mansion.
But club events aren't just about the past.
They've made the car a platform for creativity.
It's a stainless steel Lego set.
"Everybody has their level of modifications they like.
For my own car I've actually done custom reupholstered seats.
I've upgraded the exhaust to stainless steel exhaust that's been from DeLorean Go in Europe.
It sounds great."
"So at this point I've done fuel lines, the alternator, fuses and relays, radiator
fans, the entire suspension at this point's been upgraded.
The car's been lowered, new tires."
"We will share parts with each other.
Like if someone's working on something and we need something, I have extra DeLorean parts.
So it's kinda neat knowing that you have part of your car in someone else's, living
on."
"I made it and did all the programming and developed all the software and put it in my car."
This runs everything on the car.
It gets data to the digital dash.
"I mean, as most owners will tell you it's never over.
Well I of course had to upgrade that.
That's Lightning McQueen.
He's in for an overhaul.
I doubled the voltage on and that'll be ready for the spring."
There's one clip in particular I really like.
It's of the Tri-State DeLorean club and they're taking a picture with all their
cars.
Now look at them, look at how they rush to get out of the way.
They are happy to give up the spotlight in a way that John Z. DeLorean never could.
This car succeeded because it inspired people.
Let's end this video in the right car.
"Perfect."
"All those people there, the thing that brings us together is this car, but they're
all really great people and I consider them all friends.
It's a good thing.
I've reached the point in my life now where I really have to choose where I'm going
to spend my time and the type of people I'm gonna be around.
You've got to be really careful where you spend your time.
You don't want to waste it."
So thank you for riding with me today.
If you want to check out a Cars and Coffee like the one I went to in the video, there
might be one in your area, and there's a lot of cool cars that people share there.
Thank you also to the Tri-State DeLorean Club for letting me tag along.
They were all awesome and incredibly nice.
Thank you to Barrie Wills for sharing with me his stories.
They're detailed further in his book about his career with DeLorean.
Finally, in our membership program the Video Lab, I am reviewing five or six of the top
DeLorean books which I read for this piece and letting you know which you should check
out and which ones you can go ahead and skip.

Fast Car Wireless Charger for your phone - Duration: 2:45.Hey, how are you? Today we are reviewing this phone holder with built-in wireless
charger for your phone if your phone supports the wireless charging
function or if you have iPhone 6 like me or some other phone without the wireless
charging but you bought this adapter which is installed under the
case and will work as the wireless charging receiver. OK, so in the box you
will have the charger itself, and USB-C cable, two types of mount that you can
use in your car. Both are designed for the air vent and which one will you
choose it's up to you, based on how heavy is your phone and how firm is your
mount you can choose the correct adapter. So over here I have this small
one but when I'm installing it my phone holder would be in such position that
it's not comfortable to use the phone. So I selected this one and I'm pretty happy
with it. The installation is pretty easy. All you
need to do is take the adapter, press the spring part and stick it into
your air vent. Make sure not to break anything. And when you have it installed
just connect the grip, then use the USB cable to connect to your phone
charger and you are all set up. Now when you want to charge your phone just put
it over here and it starts automatically. And let's just squeeze it
over here to make the holder hold your phone. Previously I was using
one of those windscreen mounted holders that were easier to install
but the phone was so far away that it was not that easy to use it while
driving. And don't get me wrong. You should not use your phone when you are
driving but when you need to reach it, for example when you are stuck in
traffic and you want to browse the web or you want to do it some emails, it's
much better if it's over here because you can actually read the phone without
holding it. When for example phone is over here it can
be so far that you need to take it out from the grip and hold it in your hand.
And the same goes for navigation. If you want to use your map it's better if the
phone is closer to you. It supports wide range of phone
manufacturers and as you can see even if your phone does not support wireless
charging you can make it work with the holder. If you want to buy one of those
check the link in the description below. If you liked this review give me a thumbs up.
Check my other videos for more reviews and automotive tutorials.
And see you soon.
