what's up but the sisters it's Kamau Bey and today I want to talk about the
evolution of my dreadlocks and I know so many people out in the world just by
seeing your face expressions if you look at me like going out to the stores I get
judged you know what I'm saying by black people and Mexicans
those two mainly you know. White people seem to like my hair you know what I'm saying
but it's just those two that I get judged more you know and you know Mexicans
because you know I'm Mexican like I speak spanish and you know a lot of
people look at me and they're just like what the fuck is this dude doing like he's trying to be
black and same with the black people they say the same shit but me knowing
you know the freeform journey experience you know I experienced it not you so of
course you're not gonna know the backstory of my hair and what I've been
through what I learned and you know it goes deeper into you know my ancestry
because that's who I am this is who I am I didn't do anything to my fucking hair
so it could be curly you said could be you know locked up this is it you know
what I'm saying and of course I'm gonna talk about more like you know the process in
this video you know what I'm saying for all y'all people that waited you know I'm
saying for all y'all people that subscribed thank you very much and you
know I'm saying I'm Kamau Bey thank you for subscribing and I love you even
though I don't know you but you know I'm saying yeah so let me
of course I you know I'm sorry it's windy and the doors is just flapping and shit in the background but
you know these are organic you know Kamau Bey videos you know what i'm saying like
background noises sometimes you see in the old video you know I'm saying there's a
bird and shit flying like I'm just like what the fuck that's like organic you know what i'm saying
what's it called yeah I've been through so many things you know what I'm saying like
my own people judge you know themselves Mexicans against Mexicans like what the fuck kind of shit
is that. And of course you see black people judging me
saying fuck is that like you trying to get dreadlocks or some shit and I'm just
like what the fuck bitch like I freeformed like I don't fuck what the fuck I
get you know I'm saying this is me you know and a lot of people don't
understand they just see my hair that just like oh this dude don't wash his
hair even though I wash my hair every fucking single day because I hate not
washing my hair I don't know why I just have to wash it I just I have to but you
know I'm saying and it's it's hard you know in the society like you know where
I grew up my Mexican culture there's there's no dreadlocks like coursers
Millennials now and Generation Z you know I'm saying
having dreadlocks because you know we could express ourselves more but you
know and of course there's african-americans right here you know
black people whatever you want to call them melanated beings but in America
they're you know they're used to like you know things stolen from them and
they probably think that I want to be black or they probably you know or
sometimes even people think that I am mixed but I'm not I'm like both of my
parents are from Mexico you know Nayarit you know represent NAYARIT!
you know what I MEAN! but yeah I get you know criticized a lot because of my hair and
where it and because I don't care about it you know
and it just is what it is people think it's ugly people think it's cool right
now it looks Nappy as Fuck but like when it's wet and shit it looks dope you know I'm
saying like I need to start using the soap because I use this one shampoo this
black you know black African shampoo but it works you know I'm saying some
vitamin E and it it feels good you know and not like using oils - but you know but
how I started this free-form journey you could watch my old videos but right here
in this one I'm gonna explain like step by step because I did nurture it and
how it came out you know the curls because my hair was
loose curls so I did nurture it for like the first week I didn't. See we going in now (laughs)
but the first week I didn't I didn't I washed it for like the first time
because I remember I said I'm gonna start doing this freeform journey you
know you can watch that video I washed my hair are completely you know I'm
saying with that soap that soap that any kind of soap really that just dries the
oils because you that's how you know it gets matted that you don't have oils you
know and I did that I did that once you know I'm saying and then for like the
first two three weeks I was spraying it with like on rosemary water rosemary tea
or like any kind of tea really that you know washes your hair you know I'm
saying because it was short you know you I could reach the scalp better but if
your hair is longer like you could try you know washing your whole hair
completely in like like shaky you know go upside down because that's what I did
I used to have a hammock and I used to just like that and my hair would be like
you know like up and then the coils were like it would just form and I would be
in the Sun so it would dry up at the same time you know and that really worked
for like a whole month and then after that I really did a
nursery I really just let go you know I'm saying so I used that that soap like
at least three times a week and I would I would say what I used
herbs and shit like to wash my hair you know it was a lot more natural and yeah
just the soap and I just let go I really didn't do anything and you know the
curls would like stick up and stuff for like the first the second month that's
when like you know that's when that was off you know organic freeform curls
you know they were starting to get matted up and then but it really get matted
up and stir until it started growing then the curl grew out and then it
started getting married up you know like around right here and then that's when
you know I started getting some congos some little congos and stuff and then
that's basically like the first the second
it was the third the fourth the fifth the sixth and then like the seventh
month it felt it felt like i was already getting dreadlocks you know and then like ya a year I
mean you already see the one year you know say 3000 views you all say but but
yeah see I just lose my train of thought you know say but that should be like my
little catchphrase you know but yeah for the first year and then I start I
remember grabbing my hair for like cuz I used to work at waba grill and I used to wear
a hat so I had already knew my my locs are gonna be like squished and shit but I
remember holding my hair for like the longest like I would've grabbed it like
that and they put the Hat you know because I felt like that was better than
just squishing the Hat you know I'm saying my curls are like that because I
had it like that for a while but then I started grabbing my hair back and it
looked kind of better but then you know I feel like the congos is shit like they
they started forming because I grabbed my hair and of course after I quit Waba Grill
which was like a year and like what five months around around that time
like the end of high school it was like nothing it was like this
year be like summer shit but I started wearing one of these a headband and now
because I would wash my hair in the morning and then I would go to work
because I worked at an agency job and I was do I was at a warehouse and I was
just packing boxes in the trailer and it was hot
so I would have grabbed my hair I would put it up and shit the weeknd type shit
but it was just like you know I'm saying so I could get out of my face because I
was sweating and then I was getting pimples and it was just horrible and I
like it but I started grabbing my hair like this for like pshh since like right now
I quit like what not too long ago like two weeks ago a week ago and I just I I
haven't been putting on headbands because I feel like that's what caused
the congos but at the same time a lot of people want Congo so I mean you know
it's probably not like freeform freeform freeform it's probably semi freeform
because of this bitch a shit but be careful with these all right if you're
free-forming be careful with headbands or be careful with grabbing your hair in
general because you know you can fuck up the formation you can actually cause
some of these you know I'm saying which has like little little dreadlocks you
know but it's already matted up in it's all it's all big Congo already there's
no taking this one out and then also I messed up one of these things right here
in the back this right here so this was this was one and this was another one
but then with the headband and like I couldn't I could have had a chance to
separate it but I was too lazy you know saying you know with the freeform life
you're just like man should I really separate it but I wanted to you know it just turned into a big ol lock like in the back you know and they would like see
you can still see it I mean I still need to do a free-form update January 8, 2019
that's gonna be my one year and ten months and I'm gonna
do it update but i'ma show y'all it's like I still have these little original
ones you know in the front but then already going to the back it starts congoing
up more and more this one right here which is like three of them I have
this one on the side you don't remember when these two were up and now it's just
this one that's not like sometimes I swear to God like this shit is just like I
swear it is the only one that's up and it just like causes the attention you know
like when I grab my hair sometimes
but there's a lot of misconceptions a lot of things you know people think I
twist my hair still even though this shit looks matted as fuck and it looks nappy and
you can see the little fucking curls right here people still think I fucking twist
it you know what i'm saying even though I don't do shit to it but this is this is my hair you know
and this might have had something to do with it but I'm not 100% sure because I
was already seen you know a few like a few of these on the side but you know it
couldn't like it could have helped it you know but I had to do what I had to
do I couldn't have pimples I couldn't have my hair in front of my face and I'm
still debating if I should cut it you know doing two years comment if I should
cut it because I want to start all over too because a lot of people just like
man you should take care of your hair you know mostly Hispanic old ladies and
shit they're like "vieras a cuidado tu pelo se viera mas bonito" and shit
your your hair so beautiful and shit it's my fucking hair man leave my shit
alone man I want some locks man I want some freeform locs you know this is a
hairstyle this is not just a hairstyle but this is
just a way of of living you know I'm saying like when you take a free form
you know a journey it just depends on your mind state and you learn things
throughout the journey you learn with your hair and you know like this for
example this is tainted you know I'm saying it's probably tainting with the
drugs and shit that I took throughout this journey you know I'm saying then
that's why that's another reason why I want to cut it because I want to start
all over and start a new journey but still I'm debating you know I'm saying I
still got like two months until the second year cuz it's already a year oh
it's alright it's December 31st so happy new year for some of y'all that and
celebrate that but you know I'm not in that calendar but yeah this hopefully
this video helps because really I really didn't do that much but in the beginning
few weeks so you could go back in my old videos when I was just like Oh week 1
week 2 you know I'm saying now you those really helped because those have so much
information because I newbee and i was just like you know I
want dreadlocks on dreadlocks but I was impatient so I was posting like weekly
and then I started I started having more patience and I got busy with my jobs you
know I'm saying and no I just let go and I didn't care about my hair and I need
I'm just gonna take a shower right now because I didn't wash my hair in the
morning and usually I wash my hair in the mornings but I didn't have time today
you know and yeah that's all I want to say hopefully this video helped and
thank you again subscribers new subscribers it felt like I blew up
even though I was on hiatus you know I'm saying and I'm I'm just gonna have to
start posting more you know do more challenges you know my little sister
she's probably you got a YouTube channel man we should do some challenges I'm
just like yo for real like you know just for fun you know my little sister would
be watching you too and she wants to do challenges too and my brother loves them
you already know my brother but you know I'm saying hopefully this video
helped. Thank you stay safe stay positive and I'll see you in the next video I
love you
