Artwork, Bug Fixes and More | Game Dev Experiment Series - Duration: 4:10.
Hey! What's up, everyone? My name is Marina. This is Game Dev Experiment.
We are back from the short break that we had last week, and we're full of energy and full of
the new ideas that we can't wait to share with you!
So, we didn't just rest during the holidays season.
We've also had some time to work. And we've actually managed to achieve
some pretty good results.
The first update is about the artwork.
Yeah, we finally have our artwork ready!
You can see it on our channel page on YouTube and on Twitter.
So, let me know what you think.
The second update that I want to share is that I made a lot of changes to the enemy AI
and to the player controller.
There were a lot of bugs related to the player controller in the sandbox level.
Like this one, for example, when Mandarina used to jump,
she jumped through the ground level ignoring the colliders.
This is something that's not supposed to happen.
The reason for that is that I used a sample code provided by Spine and at some point
I got completely lost there.
I didn't know what's the problem. So, I decided to abandon this whole idea,
not to base my code on that sample code, but to write everything from scratch myself.
So, I've decided to start from something very simple - just a single skeleton
and the code that triggers specific animations attached to that skeleton.
And by doing that I've actually got to some very interesting insights.
Previously, when the main character used to enter idle state, I used to turn on "sideways" skeleton and
these kind of animations. And because I decided to start fresh
from single skeleton, I have created some dummy idle animations for "side" skeletons.
And that actually proved to be really good. So, I've decided not to use these
sideways animations anymore for the idle. I will use them just for the dialogues.
I've also added the detection mechanism for Mandarina. So, once she detects that
there is an enemy nearby she becomes angry. And I think that's pretty cute, so
I will leave that in the final game, as well.
I've learned a lot of things from creating this player controller from scratch,
and I've decided to create a tutorial, once I polish the code.
What do you think about that idea? Let me know in the comments below.
And the last update for today is that we're actually working towards creating the playable demo
of the game. And one of the things that's the game missing right now is the backgrounds.
And I've decided to create the backgrounds myself.
By the way, I don't have any experience creating digital art.
I used to draw with paper and pencils in the past.
But I didn't draw for a couple of years, because I simply didn't have time.
Luckily, this is not a skill that you can actually forget.
I just need to get familiar with the drawing pad.
And I've already had some drawing sessions that were really successful.
You can see the results here.
By the way, when I started to think about the first stage backgrounds
I knew that I need to place some trees on the background.
But I struggled to build a good composition, and the best thing that I could do
was to go outside
and take my camera with me
and look for real-life examples.
So, Dennis and I spent a beautiful day in the forest
and in the fruit garden. And I've managed to catch some nice examples from the nature that
I'm going to use in my final artwork.
So, I would suggest that to anyone: just go outside,
take some pictures, take some examples, get inspired, have some fun!
That's all for me today. Thank you so much for watching this video!
Don't forget to hit the subscribe button right here below. And I'll see you next week!
Bye-bye!

The Best $5 Switch Game You've Never Heard Of | Magicat Review | Pixel Slayers 4K - Duration: 4:44.
The Nintendo Switch and Steam: both have vast video game libraries full of cheap
digital games - some of which are worth your time, and many of which are not. But
the appeal of cheapness beckoned me towards game I had never heard anything
about, and in the process I found a great indie platformer that ruled the next
month of my life. That game is called MagiCat and today I'm gonna tell you
why this five-dollar wonder is five dollars well spent.
Stay tuned. MagiCat was released in 2017 on Steam and was ported to the
Nintendo Switch in 2018. Now I'm not one to buy many digital games, particularly
digital games on a whim. But when I saw the footage on John Riggs's channel
and heard it was only five dollars, I figured I'd give it a chance. And I'm
glad I did. The game's adorable music, backgrounds, and protagonist immediately
drew me in, and drew in my daughter who made it a point to watch every time I played.
But don't let this cutesy facade mislead you. MagiCat is a complex game that
does not pull its punches, especially if you're aiming for a hundred percent
completion.
You start out as any humble magical cat would, alone, without barely any powers
(save for dashing and deadly fireball-like hair balls). The game's first few levels do
well introducing the player to this charming world, its easy to control main
character, as well as some unique gameplay mechanics. First of all check
points must be paid for with magical potions, which are dispersed through the
levels. This forces you to gauge every level section to determine the best
spots to place one as you'll often not have enough to use every single time.
There are also three gems hidden within every level. These are often quite
difficult to reach and many players will need to replay levels multiple times to
find them all. Also these gems are used as currency
later on so they aren't just a pretty prize, they're actually useful. Every
level of MagiCat includes its own gameplay elements that the player must
learn how to overcome. I love how the solutions are not spoon fed to you and
the game provides ways to learn without holding your hand.
I had many "aha" moments while playing this game. At the end of every level
waits a boss battle. This is where you'll most likely encounter MagiCat's
most unique mechanic: the revival system. When you die you are given a few seconds
to push a button to revive yourself. You will be revived exactly where you died,
retaining all progress including damage dealt to the boss. But each time you do
this the amount of paws required increases exponentially. Do you want to
spend a whopping 32 paws to be revived? You've only got a few seconds to
determine if it's worth it. The designs of these monsters are often much larger
versions of enemies you've encountered earlier. Though this can be a bit
repetitive the battles are always fun and difficult. The game utilizes a world
map with many different routes to travel. The world map provides shops for MagiCat
to purchase new skills using gems, including a healing ability, something
I've barely ever seen in a platformer. These skills use up the same potions
used to spawn checkpoints so you'll have to use them sparingly.
In the end I think the two things that surprised me most about MagiCat is one:
it's five dollars permanently, and two: nobody seems to be talking about it! MagiCat
has quality level design, replayability, the characteristics and
cuteness level of a Kirby game, and super smooth controls, and yet it's the
price of a disc only sports title or a hamburger!
So how come nobody's talking about it? Well I suppose that's one of the reasons
why we make videos right? I mean now you've heard about it I hope you go out
there and play this game. There's no reason not to so uh, yeah just stop
watching this video and buy this game. Pretty much. Instead of buying that
hamburger for yourself tomorrow go eat some ramen, sit on your butt and play
some MagiCat. So thanks for stopping by! This is Sari Taurez for the
Pixel Slayers.
Bye!

MP5 in Gaming | CryMor - Duration: 10:30.
The MP5 series of submachine guns is among the most popular of any weapon in the world,
especially among counter-terrorists and special-operations units.
It has appeared in films, television, and many of our favorite video games.
In the real world, MP5s have never actually been deployed in battle on a large scale.
Instead, this SMG has created a niche role for itself that makes it a perfect fit for
clandestine operations.
It's a secretive gun and many of the organizations or units that carry it aren't the type you'd
see on TV.
Even so, it has left a considerable impact on popular culture and is one of the more
uniquely identifiable weapons in gaming and has become attached to counter-terrorism because
of games like Rainbow Six, Call of Duty, and CSGO.
The MP5 was originally known as the HK54 and was developed as part of a series of weapons
that were are based on German weapons designer Heckler and Koch's G3.
The G3 had a number of variants that were used for certain situations.
One of the designs was the HK54, which used a roller-delayed blowback action and fired
a 9x19mm cartridge.
Work on the MP5 began in 1964 and within two years it was in service.
The HK54 became known as the MP5A1 and the gun was known for its accuracy, aided by free-floating
hammerforged barrel, closed-bolt operating system, and its front hooded post sight, which
easily outclassed its smg contemporaries.
Other models like the A2, A3, and A4 were also developed, but were mostly similar in
design aside from different stocks that were useful for particular situations.
Another variant is the MP5SD, which includes a suppressor whenever its to get sneaky beaky.
This is the mp5 you use in CSGO.
The MP5 traditionally comes with a flash suppressor but it can be outfitted with a number of accessories,
including grenade launchers, suppressors, optics, foregrips, and nearly anything else
you have used to customize one of these virtually.
The mp5 and all of its variants were used in covert ops and were carried by police units
throughout the latter part of the 60s and 70s but it garnered national attention when
it was used by the British SAS in the Iranian Embassy Siege of 1980.
6 members of the KSA group campaigning for Arab national sovereignty took 26 people hostage,
a police officer who had been guarding the embassy and demanded the release of Arab prisoners
from prisons in Khuzestan and their own safe passage out of the UK.
The Iron Lady herself, Margaret Thatcher, refused to cooperate with the terrorists and
a 6 day standoff ensued.
During this course of events, police negotiators secured the release of five hostages in exchange
for minor concessions, such as the broadcasting of the hostage-takers' demands on British
television.
On the 6th day of the siege, the terrorists killed one of the hostages and threw his body
out as proof of their deed.
The British government retaliated by sending in SAS special forces to execute Operation
Nimrod.
The British soldiers rappeled from the roof of the building, entered through the windows,
rescued all but one of the remaining hostages, and killed five of the six terrorists.
The soldiers later faced accusations of unnecessarily killing two of the five, but an inquest into
the deaths eventually cleared the SAS of any wrongdoing.
The sole remaining gunman was prosecuted and served 27 years in British prisons.
Operation Nimrod was as close to Rainbow Six as you'll find in a real life situation
and the entire thing was televised on live television.
The image of the mp5 was imprinted into public memory of the event and is one of the key
reasons the gun has always been associated with the good guys.
We see this association in several video games, including Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, and
Rainbow Six.
The MP5 is the first smg used in Call of Duty 4's campaign and its possibly the most memorable
weapon in the game.
It can be found and used in several missions, including Blackout, Hunted, Safehouse, One
Shot, One Kill, The Sins of the Father, No Fighting in the War Room, and Shock and Awe.
The SD variant is used in the SAS missions that require more covert tactics.
Suffice to say, something about being Soap MacTavish involves taking down insurgents
with the mp5 and that image was imprinted onto my mind at an early age.
The gun is also quite useful in multiplayer.
It is available at level 1, in the default class "Spec Ops", and can be equipped with
a Red Dot Sight, Silencer or ACOG Scope.
It is one of the more popular submachine guns in multiplayer because of its low unlock level,
relatively controllable recoil, and high damage at close range.
The MP5 kills in 3-5 shots, and 2-4 shots with Stopping Power equipped.
It has very high damage and range for a submachine gun being a three-shot kill up to 18 meters
and being a five-shot kill at 25 meters.
Head shots generally decrease the number of bullets to kill at most ranges by one.
As with all sub machine guns, the MP5's high damage at close range drops off very quickly,
making it very competitive at close range but inferior to weapons such as assault rifles
or sniper rifles at long range.
CoD 4 was a revolutionary multiplayer shooter and it set the stage for many games that followed
it.
The MP5 was a very important piece of the legendary game's ability to capture player's
imaginations and because of the game, I'll always associate it with the British SAS.
Another game with a memorable representation of the mp5 is counter-strike.
It was featured in every iteration of the game until GO came out, in which it was replaced
by the mp7.
However, the mp5sd was recently added to the game in August of last year.
Long-time fans of the series were thrilled to see its glorious return.
One of the more popular weapons, it has a relatively fast rate of fire compared to the
rifles, and while other SMGs are even faster, it is the most accurate SMG along with the
UMP45, and has a relatively low recoil, especially when compared to the P90.
It is also very versatile on the move due to being lightweight and having a short reload
time in Counter-Strike and Condition Zero.
Its only major disadvantage is its low damage and low armor penetration.
Its effective range is shorter than the UMP45, and its spread increases to relatively high
levels if fired continuously for long periods of time.
For these reasons, the MP5 is very common in early rounds but is usually replaced by
a rifle of choice in later rounds.
Players on the losing side can afford the MP5 and kevlar to retain a competitive edge.
Interestingly, the H&K MP5 in the German version of Left 4 Dead 2 is a direct port of the Counter-Strike:
Source version.
In the world of Counter-Strike, it's a classic.
A discussion of the mp5 in games wouldn't be complete without Rainbow Six, though.
Although the original MP5 itself does not appear in the Rainbow Six universe, there
are several variants of the gun that do: The MP5A2, A4, MP5N, and the MP5 MLI.
The MP5 family of submachine guns appears to be the standard issue submachine gun of
Team Rainbow in the entirety of the franchise.
The MP5 was the standard Rainbow submachine gun in almost every Rainbow Six game to date,
except Patriots and Siege.
Perhaps the most memorable is its appearance in Rainbow Six Vegas, released in 2006.
Almost every advertisement for the game shows this weapon in one of the main character's
hands.
The MP5N is available by default in Story Mode.
It has decent stopping power and very manageable recoil.
Ammunition is easily found throughout the game, since it's the second most used submachine
gun by the terrorists in-game, which is an interesting twist on the type of character
we normally we see wielding one.
The MP5N is at its best when used in close to mid range engagements, where its rate of
fire makes it a force to be reckoned with.
It can also be utilized at longer range, especially when paired with an optical sight, due to
its stellar accuracy for an SMG.
Without the MP5, Vegas wouldn't feel the same and its just another example of its lasting
legacy.
As you all know, this series doesn't intend to provide an indepth look at every game the
gun has ever been in because of the staggering amounts of titles that have included it.
Its also been in Ghost Recon, Hitman, Zombie Defense Squad, Hatred, Rekoil: Liberator,
Grand Theft Auto, Brick-Force, Infestation, Tequila Zombies, Bullet Run, Resident Evil,
Rocketbirds, Modern Combat, Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Deadly Premonition, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.,
Rogue Warrior, Shaow Complex, ArmA, The Conduit, Wheelman, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, Secret
Service, 007, Far Cry, SAS: Secure Tomorrow, Madness Regent, Combat Arms, Code of Honor,
Face Wound, Army of Two, The Club, Zombie Panic! Kane and Lynch, Infernal, Urban Terror,
WarRock, Civil Disturbance, Half0Life, Black, Ground Zero, Infected, Operation Flashpoint,
Project Reality, Battlefield, SWAT, Combat, Special Forces, Cold Fear, Torn City, Joint
Operations, Shaow Ops, Delta Force, The Getaway, Soldiers of Anarchy, U.S.
Most Wanted, Soldat, Police Quest, Project I.G.I., Tomb Raider, Command and Conquer,
Die Hard, Tekken Tag Tournment, Alliance, Dead Frontier, and Max Payne.
The MP5 is deserving of its many appearances and it forced its way into the hearts and
minds of gamers, spanning decades, and always providing a good option to take down insurgents.
In the last video I talked about the AK and its association with terrorists.
Well, the MP5 is the exact opposite.
This one is for the good guys.
So the next time you're in the middle of a hostage rescue or a bomb defusal don't
forget to say thanks to this legendary SMG.
I hope you enjoyed this video on Heckler and Koch's masterpiece.
If you did, be sure to share it with every gamer you know.

Throwback 150+ Pocket Video Game Console Review - Duration: 51:29.
his is the Throwback 150+ game console.
In this video I will do a quick review of the device followed by a few seconds of gameplay
from ALL of the games.
When I first received this as a gift for Christmas, I thought it was an Atari branded product,
since it had the brown coloring and the back and grey lines, it sort of looks like an atari
2600 console.
However this turned out to not be an Atari console, in fact there is not a single Atari
game loaded into it, unfortunately.
Although they successfully mimicked the design of the Atari, one thing they failed to do
was to give the device a decent name.
Let's just call it the Throwback device and load it with over 150 8-bit games with quote
"retro graphics and sound".
It is currently listed as unavailable on the Amazon.com website.
I do like how small and portable it is.
The device measures in at 3.5 inches by 1.75 inches total, with the screen measuring in
at about 1" by 1".
It takes three AAA batteries to power it.
The power switch is on the right hand side of the device.
Switching it on will start up the game menu and play the snazzy intro song.
On the front of the device, left side are four buttons, rather than using a D-pad.
These buttons control your character movements, up, down, left and right.
To the right of the display are 5 additional buttons.
The top one is a reset button, when pressed at any time, will bring you back to the menus,
starting at the first page of games.
Just below that is the volume button.
The volume button has four volume settings, quiet, a little bit quieter, low and off.
Just below the volume button is the play/pause button.
You use this button to start a game or pause a game that is already in progress.
On the bottom right side of the device are the two buttons labelled "B" and "A".
These are mostly used as fire and action buttons.
You control the menu interface by pressing the buttons on the left side.
Pressing up or down will move your selection up or down one game at a time.
Pressing left or right will page up or down to the next set of game selections.
The games are listed numerically.
The screen only allowing five game names to be displayed on the screen at a time.
After having settled on a particular game, press the "Play/Pause" button to begin playing.
When you had enough, there are two ways to exit back to the games menu.
The first way is press the "Reset" button, top right, which will return you to the menus,
back to the first set of games.
If you would prefer to exit to the menus and return to the same place where you left off,
you can do that by pausing your game and then pressing the "B" key.
At any point in any games title screen pressing "B" will exit the game, returning you to the
menus where you last left off.
This is a nice feature.
If I had to take a guess, I would say that one person probably coded all of the games
on the unit.
I say that because there is a lot of similarity and uniformity between all of the games on
the device.
When you press play to start a new game, almost all the games play the same intro music sequence
and many display a blue background with your current stage, score and lives remaining before
beginning gameplay.
Also many of the songs that are played during gameplay are recycled on several of the games
on the device.
Notably the theme song from the "Cheers" television series and a few games have tunes you have
come to love like from "Frogger", for example.
So overall the sound effects on the games are underwhelming but not annoying.
The graphics on the device are also not that bad.
I do like many of the game animations like for example when cutting fruit.
Although the device boasts of over 150 games, many of the games are repeated with a different
theme or using fruit instead of animals and calling it a separate game.
My favorite game on the device is game number 127, titled "2048".
There are a couple of math games on the device.
About a half dozen Archery style games.
Tons of fruit match style games.
A lot of fighting, shooting, or action games.
Whoever coded the games for this unit hates birds as there a quite a few games where you
shoot them.
I only noticed a couple of game title misspellings, game number 77, "Destory bricks", game number
87, "Ballon War", and game number 149, "Eatting Worms", but who knows maybe they was intentional.
Many of the games do not even keep a score, let alone have a way of recording high scores
and they are all single player games.
In my opinion where this device shines is in it's puzzle games as the action games,
many times bring the device to a crawl.
I would say the target audience for the Throwback 150 is age 13 and lower.
On the back of my box the units price is listed at $24.99.
In my opinion this price point is too high.
It should probably be in the $5 to $10 range.
When you compare the Throwback unit to other similar units such as the Dreamgear My Arcade
220, it falls short.
Now it might not be a fair comparison when it comes to the hardware specs, but it is
a fair comparison when it comes to the price point.
They are similarly priced but the Dreamgear 220 has a slightly larger screen, feels better
in your hands, it's faster and has much more refined graphics.
Having said that, let's take a look at the games available on the Throwback 150+.
