May the 4th be with you: Star Wars celebrations in Singapore and around the world

May 4 is a day of festivities for Star Wars geeks, who eagerly pay tribute to the iconic space opera franchise.

The date is a homage to the popular phrase May the Force be with you. This year also marks the 40th anniversary since the first film, Star Wars: A New Hope, making the celebrations extra special.

Heres a look at how Singapore and the rest of the world plan to honour Star Wars Day.

SINGAPORE

As part of a tie-up between the Singapore Tourism Board and Disney, a three-day Star Wars Festival will be held at Gardens by the Bay from Thursday (May 4) to Saturday.

Highlights include a SaberTrees light-up - where the Supertrees will be dressed up as lightsabers - special character appearances (Chewbacca and new villain Kylo Ren), a Star Wars Run which will see 15,000 runners taking part and an outdoor screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

MALAYSIA

Legoland Malaysia is pulling out all the stops with a massive Imperial March parade on May 13 and 14, featuring over a hundred costume characters.

A series of Star Wars-themed activities have also been planned, including a speed building competition, scavenger hunt and a Jedi academy. Children dressed in full Star Wars costume get free entry from April 28 to May 31.

LONDON

An interactive exhibition at the O2 Arena, called Star Wars Identities, started in November 2016 and will run till Sept 3 this year. It features some 200 props, models costumes and artwork from the original films.

Guests get a smart technology bracelet and a lightsaber to design their own Star Wars hero.

NEW YORK

The New York Philharmonic will celebrate May 4 at the Lincoln Center with raffles for free Star Wars concert tickets, merchandise giveaways and performances by members of its brass section.

The tickets are for the Philharmonics world premiere of the Star Wars Film Concert Series from Sept 15 to Oct 7, which will feature screenings of the complete films with Oscar-winning composer John Williams musical scores performed live.

SYDNEY

A galaxy-themed burger dubbed Return of the Chedi will be served from Thursday at Sydneys Bar Luca to celebrate Star Wars week.

The purple and blue milky bun is filled with a beef patty, American cheese, triple-smoked cheese kransky, red cheddar-cheese sauce, pickles and spicy ketchup.

Reality.

It isn't what it used to be.

Hello, I am Sarbjit Nahal from Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

While you've undoubtedly heard about Virtual Reality, it's just one part of Artificial Reality

and you can't fully appreciate its transformative potential until you have tried it yourself.

The numbers are impressive: between August 2015 and July 2016, venture capitalists invested

$2 billion into Artificial Reality startups.

And worldwide revenues from this market are expected to grow from $5.2 billion in 2016

to more than $162 billion in 2020.

In fact, Artificial Reality is enabling a 4th wave of computing power that has the potential

to impact every sector and every company.

Content is the fuel that should drive these technologies to greater and greater heights.

Overall, VR and AR technologies are poised to have between 250 and 300 million users

by the early 2020s.

And as more quality content is introduced to support this, 300 million headsets are

expected to be sold over the next five years.

The virtual transformation of retail will more closely resemble an in-person shopping

experience and is another opportunity for growth.

With this technology, consumers will experience and interact with products and brands in unprecedented ways.

We believe artificial reality has great potential to improve all business-to-consumer relationships

by offering a better retail experience for an increasingly tech-savvy customer.

[Car Voice]: Engaging self-driving mode.

E-commerce penetration remains low for categories like home improvement, furniture, and even

apparel, but artificial reality could enable the emergence of cross-channel environments

that bridge the gap between online and physical stores.

Artificial Reality won't just change our consumer habits.

[Car Voice]: Self-driving mode disengaged. It could also fundamentally reshape the healthcare

industry.

[Doctor]: Alright, so this is specimen A...

Some VR companies are already developing an experience that allows medical students to

learn, in VR, everything from open heart surgery to brain surgery.

[EMT 1]: Go go go go go!

[EMT 2]: Bioscanning!

[Doctor]: Four arteries are clogged.

You've stablilized the patient, now I'm going to guide you through percutaneous coronary

intervention.

Ultimately, this technology could allow the greatest surgeons to aid patients anywhere

in the world in unprecedented ways.

Another industry that should benefit from AR is manufacturing.

It could transform everything from procurement through to fabrication.

Today, engineers must wait for their designs to be made before they're able to interact

with them.

But with AR, engineers could soon be able to virtually handle a new part in the rapid

prototyping test phase.

They would move away from the drafting table, to a full, life-like world in which their

designs are instantly available and easily modified right in front of them, in whatever

scale desired.

Everything can potentially be transformed by artificial reality.

Together with other innovation accelerators - Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Big Data,

and wearables - all of Artificial Reality could drive efficiencies, transform established

sectors, and create new business opportunities.

This is the future of technology, and the future of business.

At Bank of America Merrill Lynch, our goal is to help you see opportunity in a world

that is transforming all around us.

Fish & chips saga: Is it just ikan bilis with fries at LeVeL33 restaurant? - Singapore News Channel - Duration: 7:04.

Fish & chips saga: Is it just ikan bilis with fries at LeVeL33 restaurant?

SINGAPORE - Fish and chips, that popular English dish of battered and deep fried fish with fries, has become the dish of contention this week in Singapore, and even British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has weighed in on the controversy.

A Facebook post by Nanyang Technological University undergraduate Jaze Phua, 26, of his fish and chips order has gone viral online, with more than 6,121 shares.

Last week, he visited microbrewery-restaurant LeVeL33 at Marina Bay Financial Centre for the first time, and ordered a dish called Fish & Chips.

Instead of receiving what is commonly expected - a piece of fish fried to golden perfection with fries - he was served eight whitebait, each resting on a fry, along with a lemon wedge, pickle and tartar sauce.

He wrote in the post: So, I happily ordered Fish and Chips at LeVeL33 in MBFC. At first, I thought this is just the appetiser. Turns out this is the SGD$17.50 dish. I almost died from laughing with internal-organs-explosion.

Its like buying a car and instead they give you the toy car for the same price..

The hashtags accompanying the post compared the fish to ikan bilis (anchovies), and included #PleaseJustNameItIkanBilisWithFries, and #AsIfPuttingIkanBillisOnTopOfEachFryHelps.

Whitebait refers to the fry of fish, and it is commonly deep-fried and eaten whole. In restaurants here, it is often on the appetiser or bar bites menu as a snack.

The dish that Mr Phua ordered, when The Straits Times checked with LeVeL33, was part of its Beer Dining menu, and costs $13.

On the menu, it is called Fish & Chips, and the dish is described as whitebait, thick-cut potato, 33.1 Blond Lager pickles and tartar sauce. The lager used for making the pickles is brewed in-house.

Mr Phua admits that he might have been mistaken about the price. He also says he did not know what whitebait was.

Since it says Fish & Chips, I assumed that it shouldnt be something small. The name is very misleading. I have no intention of ruining LeVeL33s reputation in any way. Its a good place with good scenery, and good drinks maybe.

But I just feel it might be funny to name it Fish & Chips. Would anyone name their nugget a chicken cutlet?. LeVeL33s British executive chef Jimi Tegerdine, 34, however, stands firmly by his dish.

The dish is the second version of the bar bite item, he says. The first version, introduced seven years ago, had nuggets of fried dory fish on big potato cubes.

People said that it was too big for their mouths, says the chef, who introduced the current bite-sized version using the whitebait in November last year. The restaurant sells 1,000 portions a month.

It is the fifth most popular item on the Beer Dining menu, after the Fat Chips ($9); Sizzler Beef ($18.50), sizzling cubed black Angus with wasabi and soya sauce; Sizzling Prawns ($19.50); and Lamb Ribs ($18.50).

He says: The whitebait is from France, along with the potatoes. We also do our own pickles. When plated this way, it is easy to eat.

The whitebait I get costs $28 for 1kg. If I use dory fish, its $5.60 for 1kg.. The restaurant offers another fish and chips dish, served during lunch as a main course, and that has also gone through some evolution.

He introduced it as the traditional fried fish on chunks of potatoes, but said that diners complained that the portion was too big. It was then priced at $33++, as part of the restaurants set lunch.

Last year, the fish portion was halved, and a whole langoustine was added to the dish. It now costs $42++, as part of the set lunch which includes a buffet of appetisers.

Netizens have weighed in on the issue, many agreeing with Mr Phua and likening the whitebait to ikan bilis or anchovies.

Chef Ramsay, in response to a tweet from Twitter user @JuliaYeeWJ asking him to rate the dish, says: Thats 8 chips & 8 anchovies @ $1 each please. the lemon is bigger than the fish!.

He is known for responding to tweets - some of which can be hilariously harsh - when netizens send him photographs of food.

His restaurant Bread Street Kitchen at Marina Bay Sands sells traditional fish and chips with crushed peas and tartar sauce at $29.
