2017 Tesla Model X Tow Test - Duration: 2:46.
Most caravanners are used to plugging in their caravan when on holiday for some much needed
electrical power, but not their tow vehicle, but that could be all about to change with
the new Tesla Model X, a new all electric medium SUV, with a lithium iron power pack
lodged under the floor, that powers two electrical motors on each axle.
But more importantly, can carry up to seven passengers and their gear, and tow a caravan
weighing almost 2300 kilograms.
Here we're looking at the entry level Tesla X 75D, which is owned by South Australian
caravan dealer, John Munro, and is most likely the first Tesla X in the country equipped
with the optional tow kit and electrical brake controller.
So why buy Tesla for towing?
First of all, there's a real sense of occasion with this high tech tow tug.
Right from the get go, with the trick Goldwing doors providing entry to the swish cockpit
with it's big panoramic windscreen, and 17 inch vertical touchscreen that makes controlling
all the gadgets and gimmicks child's play.
But it's also family friendly, with options for six or seven seats and plenty of storage,
both in the boot, as well as under the bonnet and throughout the cabin.
There's a surprising amount of grunt too, with tons of torque on tap right from the
start.
There's none of the hesitation you get from a petrol or diesel donk when accelerating
from the lights, and it holds a steady speed on the highway, with two tons in tow.
Ride conform is pretty good on the 20 inch wheels and air suspension and there's plenty
of grip from the all-wheel drive system.
It's also bloody quiet, with just the whirr from the electric motors and some tyre noise
to disturb the ambience.
The Tesla's hefty 2.3 ton weight also makes it more stable when towing, while the trailer
sway control feature is good backup if things do go wrong.
So driving solo, the standard 75 kilowatt battery in this vehicle should be good for
a range of about 400 kilometres, but with a two ton trailer behind us, that should drop
down to about 70%, or about 300 kilometres, which is still pretty good compared to a lot
of fossil fuel vehicles.
However, it's not so good for a big lap of Australia, with just 11 Tesla fast charge
stations currently located between Melbourne and Brisbane.
So you could find yourself stranded well before you reach the red centre.
The other stumbling block is pricing, which starts at around $ 160000 drive away, factor
even more if you want the bigger 90 kilowatt battery with its better performance and longer
range.
As they say, it's not easy being green
