I think one of the most lovable things about Pokemon is its spotlight on different cultures
from around the world.
Today on this PokeOrigins I wanted to dive into one of my favorite Unovan Pokemon, Yamask
and Cofagrigus; more specifically Yamask.
We all know that Cofagrigus's design is based on a sarcophagus, but I was thinking just
the heck is its pre-evolution based upon.
I think that the best way to understand Yamask's
origins is by reading its various Pokedex entries.
According to the Pokedex, These Pokémon arose from the spirits of people interred in graves.
Each Yamask retains memories of its former life.
Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human.
Sometimes they look at it and cry."
Okay that's frightening as heck.
Anyway those entries are oddly specific right.
Ghosts that retain knowledge of their human lives.
Hmm..I wonder if Yamask's origins are Egyptian in nature like Cofagrigus.
Apparently it is, Yamask (now before we begin forgive me if my pronunciation is wrong) but
it is based on an Egyptian Ba holding a Death Mask.
Ancient Egyptians believed that death occurs when a person's ka leaves the body.
Ceremonies were conducted by priests after death, including the "opening of the mouth",
aimed not only to restore a person's physical abilities in death, but also to release a
Ba's attachment to the body.
Oh my Goodness I thought Pokemon was a kid's game.
Anyway this allowed the Ba to be united with the Ka in the afterlife, creating an entity
known as an "Akh".
I guess?!
Egyptians conceived of an afterlife as quite similar to normal physical existence — but
with a few differences Just what is this Ba well it was everything
that makes an individual unique, similar to what we call a personality.
The 'Ba' is an aspect of a person that the Egyptians believed would live after the body
died, and it was sometimes depicted as a human-headed bird flying out of the tomb to join with the
'Ka'.
You know what I can kinda see the resemblance especially around the eye area.
Everything seems to be checking out so far.
Okay we solved Yamask's origins, but what is up with that clay mask its carrying around.
I mean what kind of creature would stare at a mask of its own face and sob uncontrollably.
However, this too was part of ancient Egyptian culture.
The most important process of the funeral ceremony in ancient Egypt was the mummification
of the body, which, after prayers, was put into a sarcophagus and decorated with gold
and gems.
A special element of the rite was a sculpted mask, put on the face of the deceased.
This mask was believed to strengthen the spirit of the mummy and guard the soul from evil
spirits on its way to the afterworld.
So the mask is meant to protect Yamask from evil spirits?
So fascinating yet kinda sad at the same time.
We'll just wrap the video up here I'm not in the business of making documentaries.
But anyway how did you like this PokeOrigins.
Yamask is basically the embodiment of the soul of people living in the Pokemon world.
So when a trainer dies does it turn into a Yamask.
Answer one question and a hundred more pop up.
Anyway remember to thumb up the video for even more episodes and subscribe for additional
