He knows how to knit and to sing.
He is very smart.
So when the kid was one year old, my grandfather gave him the brain of the Paucarillo
to make the kid like the Paucarillo.
Like this he will be singer, smart and he won't forget anything.
He will also learn very fast.

Before, nobody spoke Spanish.
Only Kukama.
But when the teachers came to school,
they forbade us to speak Kukama.
She forbids me to speak Kukama.
I saw them put the kids on their knees and forbid them to speak Kukama.
Sometime, when they heard the kids speaking Kukama, they throw them their ruler.
They told them to not speak like this, only Spanish. That's why everybody forgot...
My mum, my uncles, my grandparents, were Kukamas.
I grew up hearing them speaking, and they were talking to me in Kukama.
I understood everything but I never managed to speak.
At the age of 54, I begun to speak.
I began to speak Kukama when I joined Radio Ukamara
Dance, food, belief, water, spirit.
The Kukamas are coming.
When I joined the radio, I was afraid to grab the mike.
I was thinking: "How I will speak?"
I had forgotten how to say hello in Kukama,
but I remembered how my mum and dad use to say hello.
The wise know that come the "mother" (the spirit) of the illness.
It is true that it causes fever to the kids.
How did they get cured? They get cured with remedies, we give them urine.
We've worked for 2 years with the radio,
we teach how we grew up, how our grandparents lived,
how they raised us.
We've broadcasted everything.
It is how we've started the programmes in Kukama on the radio.
We had to open a space to teach Kukama
to save the language.
We've gathered the last generation of Kukama speakers
and the first generation who doesn't speak it: the children.
I teach at the Ikuari school.
We go there every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
At 4pm, we start teaching to children.

It was a bit difficult: how could I teach if I never did it before?

I saw the children studying,
and I decided to learn Kukama too.
There was a poster that reads "Come and register at the Ikuari School".
I've seen it and I went to register.
Using practical examples, writing songs and tales,
I found it easier than to be in a classroom.
This that we do at the Ikuari school.
If we want to revive the Kukama language,
it has to be based on the Kukamas experiences
in the daily activities we do.
Like this, the students learn directly.

We tell them the name of the things and when they pronounce it well, we write it down.
We want to learn songs, tales,
the name of the trees, of the birds,
of the spirits.
We teach the children, for example, we talk them about the Lupuna tree,
about the Renaco, the Renaquillo, the Catahua, because these trees have a spirit.
We teach them the rituals and their importance. Our grandparents used these plants for healing.
My grandmother Juana knows everything about the trees, the remedies, and she tells me all that.
We summon the spirit of the cotton to heal fast.
Little cotton, little cotton, good for remedies.
Every medicinal tree has a song.
We sing to call them.
We've worked with children for 3 years now.
We have a little more than 90 children, with 10 teachers and 5 groups.
If these 90 children learn to speak Kukama, they'll be a privileged generation of Kukamas
who will see the world in a different way.

When its bark rotted, the crocodiles, the tarikaya and matamate turtles appeared.
Here in Nauta, a lot of people speak Kukama.
But they don't want to, because they are ashamed.
For instance, there is a father who doesn't want to send his son at the Ikuari school.
But the boy wants to study
and his father asks him "Why do you want study? These are Indian words."
It's our language.
We are speaking our language because it's a legacy of our grandparents.
That's why we want to save it.
This kukama language was being lost, but now it's alive, we revived it.
This is why we want the children to learn it.
How nice it is to hear Kukama,
I would never stop to speak as long as there is someone to talk to.
We are worried, because without the Ikuari school, Kukama would have disappeared.
We are the last ones, if we die, there will be nobody left to teach Kukama.
We need teachers like us to go to teach in the communities,
to have more strength.
If there is a Kukama teacher in every community, we will be able to save our language.
Before, the word "kukama" was used to belittle someone,
to make him feel bad,
to make him feel he is an Indian, someone different, a nobody.
Today, the children realize for the first time that Kukama is beautiful
and in danger of extinction,
that the Kukama culture is a precious, like that all of the native communities
that are wonderful as well.
I want to get the language of my grandparents back,
I want the people to go to the Ikuari school,
I want them to communicate with their grandparents,
Come and learn Kukama, because Kukama is beautiful.
