Single-minded Tasiadis Embraces His new start in Germany | Flag and Family - Duration: 6:08.
I'm looking at the water differently.
I take a close look at how and where it flows
so that I can take advantage of that in the competition
and be milliseconds faster than someone else.
You can learn to read the water best
when you make your way down natural rivers,
not artificially built water tracks
where we have our competitions.
With natural rivers, you always have to respect the water
because these are forces you cannot work against.
I'm Sideris Tasiadis. I'm 26 years old.
My sport is canoe slalom.
I can't get it out of my head. I always look at the water
and how it flows.
Sometimes I'm glad I don't have a boat with me on holidays.
I couldn't register that for the first two weeks.
You don't want to realise
that you really did it, what you've achieved in that moment.
Silver medallist, representing Germany, Sideris Tasiadis!
When I'd won the medal in London,
many people messaged me over Facebook
calling me a traitor, asking why I'm competing for Germany
when my roots are Greek.
I've read one or two of those messages and
deleted the rest right away.
They don't know why I decided like that.
When I was 14, I had already decided to start for Germany.
I'm training where the conditions are best.
Here in Augsburg, conditions are the best.
The decision was very clear to me
that I will start for Germany.
In the beginning, I was very scared.
I also did not want to go train.
The coach was planning on getting me into
the wild water very fast.
I did not have that much strength and skills yet.
I was scared under water so I did not want to go training.
In 1995, we moved back to Greece,
in 2000 back to Augsburg.
My grandpa broke his leg back then, he couldn't manage
to do the farming by himself.
Therefore it was clear to my parents that we had to go
back to Greece for the time being to help him.
My parents were brought together very early,
as was common in small villages.
Their parents decided who was marrying who.
My parents thought that they were gonna stay here
for a little while to work and save money
and return back to Greece.
In those five years, I didn't speak any German in Greece,
so I forgot the language altogether.
You could notice that I was barely able to form a sentence,
but now it's easier for me to speak German than Greek.
If I would still be in Greece now, I would never have
been so successful and gotten to know the sport
in the village my parents came from.
Apart from the sport and Olympia,
I'm doing my training with the Bavarian state police.
I'm planning on becoming a sports instructor.
That would be really cool.
I think I could really get the trainees in shape.
