today I'm in Taiwan and instead of just making a travel video while I'm here I
actually want to show you how to make a travel video yeah I know lots of you
have dabbled in making your own videos or would love to start your own YouTube
channel and if that's you then today's video is for you I'm going to share
exactly how I make travel videos on this channel so that you can start making
your own whether you just want to capture your travel memories build a
portfolio or even earn some money speaking of money I just want to let you

the first thing any travel video needs is a story what is your video going to
be about this could be really narrow it could be something really specific like
a specific experience like a tea ceremony or trying a certain food or it
could be super wide you can cover a whole week or more in one single video
and while you're deciding this I guess you also want to decide what kind of
video you want to make there's so many different types of travel videos from
like cinematic short videos till daily vlogs and even like longer documentary
style videos that tell you everything you want to know about a destination so
before you start filming think about what kind of video you want to make what
story you want to tell and if you don't know don't worry about it just go out
and shoot everything and you can always decide later once you have all your
footage once you have an idea where you know what you're gonna be filming you
obviously need something to film it on I've already done videos on my vlogging
setup or anything to film one right now so I will link that up here but what I'm
gonna say is it does not matter what you start with so many huge vloggers started
on their phones and still even use their phone so use your phone use a GoPro use
a DSLR use whatever you have the important thing is that you film it and
obviously get to know your gear get to know your equipment and what it does it
will make such a difference to your filmmaking
I got a new revelation I'm different for like a day so now you have your idea you
have your camera what you're gonna film with the real fun begins it's time to
start filming never underestimate how much you need to
film and what you need to have to make a fool travel video when you're making a
travel video you basically have two kinds of shots the first is a piece of
camera like what I'm doing now where you are talking to the camera and the other
type is called b-roll that's anything else have kind of like the filler shots
the bits that help to tell the story and b-roll is so so so important in a travel
video however you do not want to just throw in any old beer oh when you're
filming your b-roll shots try and think of how it's gonna help the story how
it's gonna tell the story of where you are what you're doing to try to capture
the details try to capture the moment get the wide shot showing the whole
scene but also narrow in on the small details that bring it to life those
things that we're gonna bring your travel video to life and help you tell a
more cohesive story overall one more tip when you're making a travel video is to
always add a little bit of movement to every single shot when you're editing it
will just add a little bit of flow to it and again it will help that story be a
lot more cohesive
and now we're coming into the room because it's on to the laptop top tip I
highly recommend grabbing yourself a nice cup of tea for this part because it
is time consuming of all the parts of making a travel video this is the one
that's going to take the longest you thought going out and filming all day
was alone this is where the real work begins when you go out don't forget to
take an SD card like I do all the time it's good to just have one in your bag
so you never forget and go out with that one because there's nothing worse than
getting somewhere and finding out you can't record because you don't have one
of these little guys so when I get back the first thing I do is transfer all
these files onto this SSD these are both SanDisk products if you want to see all
the kind of gear I use I'm gonna put a link to that down in the description
below but this is basically it this this and my laptop I transfer the files from
here to here I keep them backed up on here just in case something goes wrong
because things always go wrong and then I work directly from this SSD rather
than having the files on my laptop so I'm just gonna plug that in and switch
the laptop on now I'm not gonna go through my whole editing process with
you because it's long and everybody edits slightly differently everybody
uses different programs I use Premiere Pro to edit all my YouTube videos and I
always have done so the first thing I do when I get into my laptop is I look for
music I find music to fit my video some people like to choose their music before
they start filming and if I'm filming a hero video or something cinematic maybe
without any talking I might do the same I've done that a couple of times I'll
put an example up here if you want to go check that out but usually I choose my
music afterwards and that's often because I'm creating vlogs or I don't
know exactly what's gonna happen in my video I don't know how much talking
there's gonna be verses non-talking and b-roll so I like to sort of film it
first get an idea of how the video is gonna fly what the mood of the video is
because things go wrong and then I like to choose a song to fit that as I said
already I get all of my music from music bed and I absolutely love this site it's
just so so cool what makes it different to the other providers out there
music services out there is that they are real artists these are real artists
uploading their real music real albums and I love that I can support those
artists and use music that sounds like you know real music the kind of music I
would listen to in my videos I feel like it fits my personality better I feel
like it fits the channel better and overall I think it makes a better
viewing experience I used to spend hours and hours and hours searching for the
perfect song and to be honest that rarely happens anymore on music bed I
have all my work really set up really well so what I have is some playlists
for the types of videos I make I also have a playlist for cinematic snippets
as I call them these are songs that have bits in them that have like real
cinematic vibes them so if I'm ever putting together a sequence it needs
something with a bit more oomph then I can just go to that playlist pull
out the song and it's gonna instantly give that video a little bit extra the
music babe makes it really easy to do that I put it all on to these playlists
or projects as they cool them and then as I use the music I just give it a
little heart and sometimes make a note on it saying which video I used it for
so super super organized I love being able to see what I've used and seeing
like having it categorized by playlist and I usually just gone once a week when
they update their new music go through the music and add songs to each of those
playlists if you've ever asked me what music I use in my videos you'll also be

into detail about editing because that it's like another video a whole other
video series in itself but what I will share is just a few tips here one is to
cut to the music if you can this is why I love to choose the music after filming
it's so that I can find a beat that I think is gonna fit with what I know I
filmed just cutting it to the music on the beat just makes it flow a lot
better I love it when I use a song and there's like a crescendo or something
happens and something's happening in the video as well and I can match the two up
that's just really satisfying but just cutting it to the beat will make a huge
difference to your travel videos
another tip is to not just throw random clips in but try to create a story with
your video a good travel video has a story to it it's not just lots of random
b-roll but the bureau actually tells a story and obviously you need to film
those clips in the first place but it might also mean that you're not putting
them in the same order that you film them because it tells a better story not
too
and finally don't forget to play with speeds in your travel video I always
edit at 30 frames per second and film at 60 frames per second so that I can slow
all of my clips down to 50% that gives that nice slow mode and it's what gives
a lot of travel videos that more cinematic look so if you want to do that
make sure you are doing that I have a video on my m50 settings up here which
explains more of the settings I use to get that look I slowed down most of my
clips probably about 80% of my clips and I also speed up some of them as well
again that's another video in itself so if you want to see that let me know
below and once you've edited your video that is it you just need to export it
