Youtube daily is the new Feb 16 2019

- In this course,

we cover why you need to design,

how you design, how you understand the

patterning of systems around you,

how you define your climate

so you can design accurately within your climate

and we design with the climate

in relation to energy cycles from the trees.

We get you to understand how ecosystems give you production.

We take you through water

and how water works, how soil is created,

we give you confidence in all those things.

We teach you how to work with surveyors

and do earthworks on the land,

we teach you the energy efficiency of houses

and how to design houses to be comfortable,

how to deal with your waste systems,

how to design renewable energy systems,

how to specifically work with plants and animals

and supply lines,

even aquaculture, how to work with production

in the water itself

and we teach you how to work with community systems,

financial systems, living, how you create your own living

by design which is beneficial for the environment.

Mainframe design is where we just come down

to the nuts and bolts of the system,

how we look at water as a design,

access as a design, structural positions as a design,

and then how we work out our energy efficiency

through those systems,

how we understand the weather in those systems,

just the very basics, the mainframe,

it's like the foundation

and then we can add onto that,

we can add the details later.

If we get the mainframe right,

everything hangs together nicely.

Connectivity in design gives us that synergy,

it gives us that extra effect,

by connecting things together,

we get a resilience,

we get a system that is incredibly durable.

It will stand lots of variation.

Connectivity allows us to survive all the variations

that are particularly important at this point

in history where we're getting lots of climate change,

we've got lots of variations around us,

things are constantly changing.

Connectivity gives us that dynamic elasticity of strength

and it's most important

when we're very much a connected system between disciplines.

We're more about the connections

than the disciplines themselves actually.

It's an advantage not to be an expert

in any of these fields

because this is a fresh, new approach

of how to look at integrating knowledge,

rather than being a specialist in a field,

it's better to be a generalist

that understands the integration

of all the relevant subjects

so you can wrap it up together

and that's what makes a great designer

and that's what we teach you.

We teach you to take on this new approach

to knowledge and that's what makes people so excited

and passionate actually.

Why Nerds Should Love Wrestling | NowThis Nerd - Duration: 11:05.

Hi everyone, I'm Moose,

I'm utterly obsessed with pro wrestling,

WOOO!!!

and I bet some of you are, too.

There's just so much crossover between wrestling,

and everything else nerds hold dear,

from the flashy outfits and long-term storytelling of superheroes,

to the high drama and heart-wrenching battles of anime and videogames.

But despite all the synergy,

there's a lot of potential fans who poo-poo pro graps,

without even realizing it's right up their alley.

So, shine your wizards, skin the cats,

and for god's sake, Too Sweet me,

because this is

Why Nerds Should Love Pro Wrestling

Pro wrestling has more in common with comic books than you think.

Beyond the superficial trappings of colorful costumes, cool action,

and the never-ending battle between good and evil,

both artforms are defined by

Long-Term, Serialized Storytelling

When it comes to attracting new fans,

comic books, long-running manga and anime, and wrestling have the same core problem:

Decades and decades of complicated continuity.

Just like superheroes have been a monthly staple since 1938,

and 'Shonen Jump' has published hundreds of thousands of pages of for the last 50 years,

WWE keeps the content coming every single week.

RAW and Smackdown have well over 2,000 episodes between them,

and unlike comics, they're all canon.

There are no Crisis crossovers or multiple Earths to condense the continuity,

meaning wrestling can be just as, if not more, convoluted than your average superhero saga.

Think about all of the crazy canonical stuff that's happened to Spider-Man or Goku since their debuts,

all the deaths, undeaths, clones, revamps and relaunches.

How many more spider-people are there?

Save it for Comic Con.

Surely the simple world of pro wrestling is far less complicated, right?

Eh.

Let's look at the WWE career of the Devil's Favorite Demon, Kane.

He began as a deranged dentist and a Diesel doppelganger,

before being repackaged as the Undertaker's long-lost little brother in 1997.

At first, he was horribly burned and unable to speak,

but WWE quickly walked that back,

and soon,

Kane had transformed into a goofy good guy who may or may not have engaged in necrophilia.

Hello? It's me, Kane.

Over the last two decades, Kane has unmasked, remasked, and unmasked again,

became a horror movie slasher,

teamed up with a little goat man,

sold out and went corporate,

and got himself elected mayor of Knox County, Tennessee.

Now, do you need to know all that to enjoy RAW or Smackdown?

Pete Rose! That's Pete Rose! Pete Rose just got tombstoned!

Absolutely not,

just like to don't need to know that Tony Stark once turned heel on the Avengers and was reborn in a teenaged body,

or every single iteration of Hawkman's confusing origins.

But if you do, it can be so rewarding.

Wrestling, comics, and anime, each come with their own rich history,

a legacy that, while not essential, adds untold layers to tapestry of the story,

and gives newcomers an entire world to dive in and explore, if they care to learn.

And if you don't, no sweat,

because with wrestling,

There's Something For Everyone

So far, we've been pretty focused on the big dogs of their respective industries,

Marvel, DC, and WWE,

but the worlds of comics and wrestling are so much larger than the companies that happen to be on top at the moment.

If you're sick of the standard superheroes from the big two,

your local comic shop is bursting with indie imprints.

You've got creator-owned epics from Image like 'The Walking Dead' and 'Saga,'

not to mention IDW's awesome licensed comics,

or Valiant's fresh new approach to a superhero stable.

Similarly, wrestling goes far beyond WWE.

It might be the biggest, but it's far from the only game in town,

and if you've got an itch, odds are there's a wrestling promotion that scratches it.

Down in Mexico, the line between wrestlers and superheroes hasn't existed since the '40s,

when luchadors like El Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras, and more transcended the squared circle,

and became larger-than-life heroes in comics and cinema,

a tradition kept alive by the supernatural shenanigans of El Rey's 'Lucha Underground.'

Before the earthquake his name was Pasqal Mendoza.

But after rising from the ruins, he became... Mil Muertes!

In Japan the line between wrestling, anime and toukatsu is nearly as blurred,

mixing a hard-hitting, sports-like strong style,

with monstrous wrestlers who can spit poisonous green mist,

and masked heroes literally straight out of an anime.

like Jushin 'Thunder' Liger and Tiger Mask

characters that began in manga and TV shows that have far outlasted their source material.

It's like if Robocop showed up on a WCW pay-per-view...

Oh, gosh almighty! He's pulling that door right off the hinges!

What strength by RoboCop!

There are dozens if not hundreds of indie feds each with their own unique spin on sports entertainment,

from the deathmatches and debauchery of GCW,

to the all-women excellence of STARDOM, SHIMMER and SHINE,

not to mention stalwarts like PWG and Ring of Honor,

or the intriguing upstart All Elite Wrestling.

Somewhere out there, there's a wrestling show that's just for you,

you just have to seek it out.

Go support your local indie,

hang out afterwards, buy some merch at the gimmick table,

and talk to your favorite performers,

because, believe it or not,

Wrestlers Are Nerds Now

In the old days,

If you were a big dude willing to stuff yourself into some spandex,

you could be a wrestler.

Back then, promoters prized looks and perceived toughness in order to protect kayfabe,

the illusion that wrestling is real.

But in recent years, we've seen a shift away from bouncers and bodybuilders,

I think he's gonna do it!

towards passionate performers who were raised on a love of pro wrestling.

Today's superstars aren't the hard-partying Horsemen of the '70s and '80s,

nor are they the beer-swilling hellraisers of the '90s.

Lemme tell ya something, I hate the '90s.

'90s freakin' sucked.

'90s freakin' sucked.

Today, most wrestlers are, for lack of a better word, nerds.

Let's face it, it takes a certain kind of person to strip down to trunks and kickpads,

and risk their lives pretending to fight someone in a high school gym for a hotdog and a handshake.

These days, most wrestlers spend their downtime the same way we do:

grinding away at videogames.

Superstars like AJ Styles and Samoa Joe are die-hard gamers,

though they rarely show off their love in the ring,

unlike, say, your world-famous 5-time champs,

the New Day!

Ever since the trio teamed up,

they've been dropping references and rocking game themed gear,

thanks in large part to their trombone-touting hypebeast Xavier Woods,

who also happens to be the creator of the massive gaming channel 'UpUpDownDown,'

and they're far from alone.

Before she started wrestling, the Empress of Tomorrow Asuka was a games jounalist and graphic designer,

and in his Japan days, Finn Balor used to slather his body in paint resembling

symbiotes, supervillains, and other copyright-infringing comic book icons.

Outside of WWE, the American Nightmare Cody Rhodes is all in on owning his nerd-dom.

He's rocked some amazing Metal Gear cosplay,

parlayed his love of geeky stuff into acting roles in the Arrowverse,

and actually got Stephen Amell to step into the squared circle himself.

Speaking of the Elite,

Kenny Omega, unquestionably the biggest star of the sport outside of WWE,

has unabashedly incorporated games into his entire persona.

He's mixed 'Street Fighter' moves into his personal arsenal,

named his finisher after Sephiroth's theme song,

One Winged Angel! Super One Winged Angel!

and even collaborated with 'Undertale' creator Toby Fox on a special ring entrance for his most recent Tokyo Dome main event.

My point is, today's wrestlers are just like us.

Well, incredibly athletic, talented and hardworking versions of us with 4% bodyfat,

but still.

The line between fan and performer has never been thinner,

and now more than ever,

Wrestling Needs Nerds

In a way, wrestling's popularity is inversely proportional to comics and superheroes.

During the glory days of Hulkamania,

Marvel and DC were slowly crawling out of the Bronze Age,

and by the time the comics industry exploded in the early '90s,

the Rock n' Wrestling era was over.

While comics were king,

WWE and WCW struggled to build a new generation of stars,

but just as the comic book speculator bubble popped,

the Attitude Era and the nWo brought wrestling to unheard of heights of popularity.

Today, WWE's stock might be soaring,

but the actual wrestling audience is orders of magnitude smaller than it was during the booms of the '80s and '90s.

Over ten million people were regularly tuning into wrestling during the Monday Night Wars,

but today, an episode of Raw is lucky to get 2.5.

That's seven million fans vanished with the snap of a finger,

seven million people now spending their hard-earned money on Crunchyroll subscriptions,

Overwatch loot boxes,

or tickets to 'Endgame' and 'Captain Marvel.'

What were once geeky subcultures have finally been accepted into mainstream pop culture,

while the wrestling audience has dwindled to a smaller, but extremely dedicated and passionate fanbase.

In other words, nerds.

Don't get me wrong, in a lot of ways, the business is healthier than ever,

especially now that WWE finally has some real competition to contend with,

but at this point, the nerds are all that's left.

That's part of the reason that wrestling has such a great community,

especially compared the toxicity we've seen from far bigger fandoms.

Are there creeps and gatekeepers within wrestling?

Of course, but on the whole, I've found it to be way more open and accepting of new fans.

We're not threatened by new faces and underrepresented people who want to get into the scene,

we don't demand an encyclopedic knowledge of every submission hold

Hold 1: armdrag! Hold 2: armbar!

or Brutus the Barber Beefcake gimmick,

and we sure as hell don't judge you for wanting to be a part of the wrestling universe.

That's because, unlike with comics and anime, we need all the new blood we can get.

There's no resentment or hostility,

we're just pumped to see more people looking past the silliness at the heart of sports entertainment,

and embracing the artform we hold so dear.

Welcome to The Snap: the segment where we answer frequently asked questions

at a very rapid fire format. So let's get right into it...

For this snap we're gonna be discussing the brand new Dyna coil

we've already anticipated a lot of the

questions that you may have with it so we're just gonna get right into it

How much concentrate do you apply to the DynaCoil?

Start with a very small amount and go from there

because you can always add more later on.

How many heat cycles do you get per application of concentrate?

Depending on your heating technique you're going to get around two to six heating cycles per application

and that will vary based on your technique, your torch that you're using

and how warm your environment is so there's a couple different variables there.

Can you apply concentrate when the DynaCoil is still warm?

Definitely. It actually works best when the tip and coil has been primed because

it's going to melt a little bit right away right when you apply it rather than

trying to put a sticky residue substance onto it. It's not going to want to

release where if it's warm it's going to melt right into it that has been the

This is Mike Mitchell, director of "The Lego Movie

The Second Part."

All right.

Here we are in Bricksburg, which

has been destroyed by Duplo aliens,

leaving it apocalyptic.

And Lucy and Emmet and Battlecatty

are checking out a new evolved alien that's just arrived,

and she spotted Emmet dancing.

"Uh, oh."

So it was a real challenge to make

sure that in the animation that we could only

use Lego bricks that really exist in the real world

even though this is all done on the computer.

So we made sure everything has a handmade feel

and that we're only using Lego brick for everything

including the smoke, including the dust,

including the explosions.

And if you look closely, everything's dusty.

Sometimes there's fingerprints on the Lego.

This is them master building a getaway car, Chris Pratt

and Elizabeth Banks.

"Snazzy racing stripes."

For this film we're designing new things

with our production designer, Patrick Hanenberger

and art director Kristen Anderson.

But we're also working hand in hand with Lego.

And as they're building toys, they're

helping us design as well.

So it's like a back and forth that we

had between our artists and our animators and the toy

makers, as well.

There's a blinker gag that I stole from a SpongeBob movie,

I directed, that was cut out.

And even that stream of smoke, everything

is made out of a brick.

"I can't believe another year has passed."

"Wrong flare!"

"Should old acquaintance — "

"Alfred, battle cars."

"Undeniably, Apocalypseburg is a nod to Mad Max

without stealing from Mad Max.

But it was really fun to do all

these apocalyptic vehicles and this dusty look,

but all through the whimsical lens of Lego."

[screaming]

"We're alive!

Aah!"

"Love you."

"I love you more.

These stars and hearts are voiced

by the children of our editors, Wyatt Jones

and Claire Knight.

And I believe they're around seven years

old when we recorded them."

"Wee!"

"Hello!"

"Hurray!"

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Returns to Work at Supreme Court The New York Times - Duration: 2:28.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Returns to Work at Supreme Court The New York Times

WASHINGTON — Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg returned to the Supreme Court on Friday to participate in a private conference at which the justices considered adding cases to the courts docket, a court spokeswoman said. It was Justice Ginsburgs first appearance at the court since undergoing cancer surgery in December.

Among the cases under consideration at Fridays conference were ones on whether the Trump administration may add a question on citizenship to the census and whether a federal law barring employment discrimination applies to gay men and lesbians.

Justice Ginsburg, 85, missed two weeks of arguments in January but participated in the cases by reading briefs and transcripts. She is expected to be on the bench on Tuesday when the court returns from its four week midwinter break.

Justice Ginsburg has suffered a number of health setbacks over the years but had never before missed an argument in her 25 years on the court.

Surgeons removed two malignant nodules from on Dec. 21. The court has said that the surgery was successful and that she is cancer free.

Post surgery evaluation indicates no evidence of remaining disease, and no further treatment is required, Kathleen Arberg, a court spokeswoman, said in January.

Doctors found the nodules during tests following a fall in November in which Justice Ginsburg fractured her ribs. She had broken her ribs once before, in 2012. In 2014, she

Justice Ginsburg has been treated for cancer twice before, and attributed her survival partly to the medical care she received at the National Institutes of Health.

Ever since my colorectal cancer in 1999, I have been followed by the N.I.H., she said in the . That was very lucky for me because they detected my pancreatic cancer at a very early stage in 2009.

She did not miss any arguments after the earlier procedures. in 2010 on the day after the death of her husband, Martin D. Ginsburg.

Last week, Justice Ginsburg made since her recent surgery at an evening of music celebrating her life. But she skipped President Trumps State of the Union address the following night.

Justice Ginsburg is the senior member of the courts four member liberal wing. Mr. Trump has appointed two new members to the Supreme Court, Justices Neil M. Gorsuch and Brett M. Kavanaugh, moving it considerably to the right.

Should he name Justice Ginsburgs replacement, Republican appointees would outnumber Democratic ones six to three.

Watch Out. Tax Season Is Even More Stressful Than Usual. The New York Times

With millions of people filing tax returns under a new tax law and after a long government shutdown, this is a challenging year. We offer survival tips and extensive coverage.

CreditCreditPablo Delcan and Company + Saad Moosajee

Take a deep breath, a drink, whatever calms you: Its tax season.

If you have already filed your return and received a satisfying refund, congratulations! You are a lucky person, because many people are having a hard time this year.

Oddly, much of the pain comes from a shift that might seem pleasant: sweeping changes that, while providing a windfall for the rich, still amount to a tax cut for most Americans. But, combined with the longest government shutdown in history, the short term effects of these changes have been surprisingly disruptive.

Early returns indicate that fewer people than usual have been getting the refunds they expected. That has created an excruciating spectacle: Many people who paid less in taxes every week are discovering that they owe money to the Internal Revenue Service. On top of that, residents of states like New York, New Jersey and California face a new cap on federal deductions for state and local taxes, and wont know whether their federal tax bill has gone up until they have slogged through their returns. Whats more, many tax preparers arent up to speed on all of the new breaks and burdens.

Good luck! It may be a rougher ride than usual. We cant eliminate glitches, fatten your refund or make tax filing a total pleasure. But we have covered the tax mayhem extensively, and prepared articles and tax software reviews, all in the hope that with our help, the ordeal will be easier and, at the very least, more comprehensible.

[Sign up for the , and get even more personal finance news.]

The most important changes to the tax code in decades have taken effect — and filers are confused. Plenty of people who counted on fat tax refunds are disconcerted when they learn that they are not getting them. For some thorny issues, especially those concerning small businesses, professional tax preparers are perplexed as well. We asked certified public accountants and other tax prep pros to do their best and give taxpayers some clear answers.

If youre preparing your own tax return, you may benefit from expert help conveyed by top notch tax software. The Wirecutter, a division of The New York Times Company that rigorously tests products, surveyed the offerings for this season. The reviewers made several recommendations, depending on factors like whether you run your own business and whether your financial situation is complex or fairly simple. If its very simple, they say, try H R Block Free.

Phones are fabulous for playing games and reading news apps. But are they effective at filing tax returns? Millions of people think so. Our reporter Tara Siegel Bernard gave phone filing a test run, but she wasnt impressed. She found the experience unpleasant, in parts, and had unanswered questions about how to fill out a model return. For her own familys taxes, she will rely on a human accountant again this year.

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes, Ben Franklin once said. Given those alternatives, the tax man usually looks good. Yet the particular tortures exacted this year may make the choice less obvious.

The wholesale overhaul of the tax law that is in place for people filing their returns would, on its own, have required the I.R.S. and tax experts to make many adjustments and give a great deal of new guidance this year. The partial government shutdown slowed the process considerably. And the early returns are including a larger number of unpleasant surprises for taxpayers — who owe money when they expected to receive refunds — than was the case in the past.

READ MORE:

Only a year after sweeping changes took place, proposals to revamp the tax code — yet again — are rampant. From the Democratic side come calls for a more progressive system, requiring wealthy people to pay more, reversing the rise in income inequality that has been underway. Republicans, on the other hand, want to make the current tax rates — which are set to expire at the end of 2025 — permanent. The division of power in place in Washington means that you shouldnt count on big changes this year. But the heated debates in Congress and on the 2020 campaign trail will give clues about legislation to come.

READ MORE:

Wealthy people are reaping the richest benefits from the changes in the tax code, and many of them are rejoicing, as you might expect. But an affluent few are raging against a so called reform that has put more money — a lot more — in their pockets. They were already doing quite well, they say, and dont need extra help from the tax system: Poorer people need the money more. Some millionaires and billionaires, however, resent this kind of talk. Friends of the wealthy tax critics call them traitors to their class.

The 2017 tax bill provides a 20 percent deduction for qualified business income, which is a great boon for those who can get it. But who, exactly, qualifies? The rules are arcane, and I.R.S. guidance has been changing. Health, law, financial services, entertainment and consulting businesses dont qualify, for example, but architecture and engineering do. In some cases, eligibility hinges on small details. Read on for some pointers.

READ MORE:

By enabling affluent investors to postpone paying the tax man, new opportunity zone funds are starting to attract substantial sums. The funds are a tax break that was included in the 2017 tax law as a way of drawing money into distressed communities.

The idea is that investors get tax breaks, while the neighborhoods get new businesses and upgraded apartment buildings, shops and the like. But the areas that have been designated as distressed are not always really needy. The vibrant Long Island City neighborhood where Amazon proposed placing its campus, a plan it has abandoned, was designated an opportunity zone, for example. And even when neighborhoods are truly distressed, providing tax breaks for the rich may be an awkward way of redeveloping them.

As Refunds Shrink, Treasury Dept. Reminds Workers of Bigger Paychecks The New York Times

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration defended itself on Thursday amid a from angry taxpayers who are disappointed that they are receiving smaller tax refunds after the 2017 Republican tax cuts.

The slimmer refunds, which are down about 8.7 percent from the same period a year ago, have been seized on by opponents of the tax cuts and Democratic lawmakers as proof that the Republican tax law did little to help average Americans.

On Thursday, the administration rolled out fresh data to try to explain to taxpayers that their 2018 refunds were smaller because they received most of their tax cut in the form of bigger paychecks last year.

Most people are seeing the benefits of the tax cut in larger paychecks throughout the year, instead of tax refunds that are the result of people overpaying the government, a Treasury Department spokeswoman said. Smaller refunds mean that people are withholding appropriately based on their tax liability, which is positive news for taxpayers.

The Treasury Department said average refunds during the first two weeks of tax filing season were down 8.7 percent from the same period a year ago to dollar 1,949. About 27 million tax returns, or a fifth of the expected total, have been processed so far.

The new law cut taxes for about 80 percent of filers, though the amounts vary widely. The biggest cuts went to those at the upper end of the income spectrum, with the top 1 percent of earners projected to get an average tax cut of dollar 51,000, or 3.4 percent of after tax income, . Middle income earners are projected to get an average tax cut of dollar 900, or 1.6 percent of their after tax income.

After the tax law passed, the Treasury Department adjusted its withholding tables — which guide employers in determining how much to withhold in taxes from a workers paycheck — so that taxpayers would see the additional money immediately. But many workers may not have noticed since the tax cut was spread over a years worth of paychecks.

As a result, many taxpayers are now uncertain about whether they will be getting a refund from the government or if they will owe taxes.

A senior Treasury Department official said there appears to be confusion among some taxpayers who believe that a smaller refund means they have a higher tax bill. The official noted that financial advisers do not tend to encourage clients to seek higher refunds, since that essentially means taxpayers are overpaying the government throughout the year.

But some taxpayers prefer to withhold too much as a method of forced savings, while others view that as giving the government a loan with zero interest.

The tax law ushered in sweeping changes to the individual side of the tax code such as increasing the standard deduction and introducing a cap on the state and local tax break. Many of the changes were meant to simplify the system, but the transition has created confusion.

Democrats have seized on the disappointment as a political opportunity, in some cases fanning the incorrect assertion that smaller tax refunds mean Americans did not actually get a tax cut.

Senator Kamala Harris, a California Democrat and presidential candidate, wrote a post on Twitter about the smaller refunds this week and then suggested that President Trump increased taxes on the middle class. Most middle class Americans are expected to see lower tax bills.

Representative Joyce Beatty, Democrat of Ohio, suggested this week that the smaller refunds were painful for struggling Americans who count on that money. She said the declines were a broken promise by the Republicans who passed the tax cuts.

I think one of the things we were promised was that we were going to see it go up, Ms. Beatty said, adding that smaller refunds will weaken consumer confidence. People are upset about it.

The Treasury Department official said on Thursday that it was expected that average refunds would be smaller this year and that most of the people who are receiving them are still paying less tax overall.

Opinion Few Are Inspired to Follow Americas Lead on Iran The New York Times

A conference tries to rally support for a political and economic fight, to little effect.

The editorial board represents the opinions of the board, its editor and the publisher. It is separate from the newsroom and the Op Ed section.

Nearly 30 years ago, the United States used its diplomatic clout to persuade Israel and its Arab neighbors to meet publicly for the first time, at the Conference, which opened the door to greater Arab acceptance of Israel.

On Wednesday and Thursday, leaders of Israel and Arab states met publicly again, at an in Warsaw staged by the Trump administration. But the goal of this meeting, drawing officials of some 60 nations, was not peacemaking. It was to rally support for economic and political , for which the United States has found little enthusiasm among allies since withdrawing from the 2015 deal that restricts Irans nuclear program.

Administration officials initially tried to promote their agenda under an amorphous seeking peace in the Middle East rubric. But there was no denying the real purpose, especially when Benjamin Netanyahu, Israels militantly anti Iran prime minister, sent out a since deleted tweet that proclaimed an open meeting with representatives of leading Arab countries, that are sitting down together with Israel in order to advance the common interest of war with Iran.

Mr. Netanyahus office on Thursday released a in which senior Arab officials played down concerns about the Israeli Palestinian conflict and defended Israels right to defend itself, while denouncing Iran as the greatest threat to regional peace.

While the Trump administration, Mr. Netanyahu and Sunni Arab leaders in the Persian Gulf may have enjoyed this anti mullah pep rally, it highlighted how few major powers are cheering along. France, Germany and Britain, along with Russia and China, still support the agreement they helped the Obama administration negotiate with Iran. Iran itself continues to uphold it, according to American intelligence agencies.

Britain sent its foreign minister to the conference, but France and Germany, apparently reluctant to be part of such a bellicose bashing, sent lower level diplomats. China sent no one, nor did Russia, which was busy conducting a meeting on Syria with Turkey and Iran. Even Poland, which hosted the Warsaw conference at the request of the administration, believes in the Iran nuclear agreement.

Major European companies left the Iranian market after President Trump withdrew from the pact and reinstated American sanctions. But European governments, struggling to keep the deal alive in defiance of Mr. Trump, last week began a barter system that could enable some smaller companies to continue to do business with Iran. That drew an aggressive response at the conference from who denounced the Europeans for trying to break American sanctions against Irans murderous revolutionary regime.

Mr. Trump denounces Iran for its ballistic missile program, support for terrorism, jailing American and Iranian political prisoners, its involvement in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq, and 40 years of repression at home. As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a television interviewer, the administration is counting on Iranians, under growing economic pressure, to their regime.

Yet Iran is not alone in destabilizing the region. The administration undercuts its credibility when one of its chief allies in its campaign against Iran is Saudi Arabia, whose de facto ruler is believed to have ordered the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi and has directed a war in Yemen that Congress has denounced for its toll in innocent lives.

If the administration wants to stand up to the challenges posed by Iran, it will only be able to do so with global support, particularly from its longstanding democratic allies in Europe.

China and U.S. to Continue Trade Talks Next Week The New York Times - Duration: 6:51.

China and U.S. to Continue Trade Talks Next Week The New York Times

By and

BEIJING — Talks between the United States and China to end their trade war will continue in Washington next week, officials from both countries said on Friday, hours after high level negotiations between American and Chinese diplomats ended in Beijing.

While the White House described progress in the talks, many issues remain unresolved and the discussions will continue as both sides try to reach an agreement ahead of President Trumps March 2 deadline. Mr. Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on dollar 200 billion worth of Chinese goods if a deal cannot be reached by that date, though he suggested earlier this week that he would push the deadline back if there were progress in the talks.

Mr. Trump, speaking at the White House on Friday, said negotiations with China are going extremely well, but that the progress would only matter if a deal gets done.

Were a lot closer than we ever were in this country to having a real trade deal, Mr. Trump said, adding that the agreement with China would cover theft and unfairness.

Mr. Trump said that the tariffs he has imposed on dollar 250 billion worth of Chinese imports are hurting China very badly and that it would be an honor to remove them if an agreement can be reached.

The president added that after a Chinese delegation comes to the United States next week, he will likely meet with President Xi Jinping of China at some point to work out remaining differences.

Whether the two countries can work out the remaining differences is unclear and big sticking points remain in the trade talks, people briefed on the negotiations said.

These detailed and intensive discussions led to progress between the two parties, the White House press secretary said in a statement. Much work remains, however.

American officials said that the talks focused on so called structural reforms that the United States wants China to make and on Chinas purchases of American goods and services. The White House on Friday said that any agreement between the two countries will be included in a memoranda of understanding between the two countries.

The most difficult and intractable issue involves the Trump administrations desire to put meaningful restrictions on Chinas ability to keep investing enormous sums of money from the government, and from government affiliated financial institutions, in a wide range of advanced manufacturing sectors that compete with American industries. These include areas like commercial aircraft manufacturing, semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Another challenge for negotiators is that both sides perceive national security as being at stake in some of the issues.

China has been reluctant to unblock internet access to its market for some of Silicon Valleys biggest and most successful businesses, like Facebook and Google. It fears that without stringent censorship, everything from democratic ideas to pornography would be harder to fight.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that he and Robert Lighthizer, the United States trade representative, had productive meetings with Liu He, Chinas economic czar. Still, it wasnt immediately clear late Friday whether they had moved significantly closer to resolving any of the thorny issues separating the two sides.

Mr. Lighthizer and Mr. Mnuchin also met with Mr. Xi on Friday afternoon at the Great Hall of the People.

But the talks did allow both sides to at least begin hashing out their differences. Both the United States and China began somewhat mechanically combining their respective lists of offers into a memorandum of understanding that included areas of disagreement in bracketed text, with each sides separate views listed for each issue, said people briefed on the talks. Compiling the various offers could someday make it possible for the countries leaders to go through the options more systematically.

But the broad areas of disagreement still left in the bracketed text mean that an actual, comprehensive understanding between the two sides remains elusive.

The negotiations did not include any big new concessions by China to limit its government led push to build high tech industries in competition with the West, said the people, who insisted on anonymity because of the diplomatic and financial sensitivity of the talks.

China Central Television, a state controlled broadcaster, said early Friday evening on its website that progress had been made. It said the talks would continue in Washington next week.

New progress has been made on important and difficult issues, C.C.T.V. said, without providing any details. Although there is still a lot of work to be done, we have hope.

China is in the middle of a sharp economic slowdown, triggered partly by Beijings efforts to rein in debt but also by a sudden faltering in the willingness of consumers to spend and industries to invest. Many business leaders attribute the decline in consumer and investor confidence to the trade war.

That economic backdrop has given Chinese leaders an incentive to emphasize progress in the talks. Mr. Mnuchin has also stressed progress, allaying worries among stock market investors. Mr. Lighthizer has said little in public while pressing for a comprehensive trade deal.

The two sides have been struggling with more than 100 issues raised by the United States in a lengthy statement . In the preparations for this weeks talks, the sides had been unable even to agree on a draft framework for the broad outlines of a possible deal, so expectations for any comprehensive settlement had been low from the start.

Many of the issues, like how to handle the tech sector, have been festering between the United States and China for a long time. Many high tech issues are also changing and evolving along with the sector, making it especially difficult to put in place a durable agreement.

Particularly in the areas of technology regulation and standards, it will be a game of Whac a Mole at best, said James Green, who was the top trade official at the United States Embassy in Beijing until August and is now a senior nonresident fellow at Georgetown University.

The negotiations this week have encompassed some issues on which incremental progress has been made in recent weeks, people briefed on the negotiations said. China has agreed to disclose more of its government subsidies to the World Trade Organization, said these people, who insisted on anonymity because of diplomatic sensitivities in the talks.

Chinese officials have also expressed a willingness to let foreign companies participate in panels that set standards on important industrial issues, like fuel economy averages for cars. But while that might give foreign companies a glimpse of upcoming rules, they would be in a minority and might not have much influence.

The Trump administration also sees national security at issue in a long list of products that the United States either already imports from China or might be likely to import in the next few years. These include many products, from nuclear reactor components to aircraft engine parts, from among the dollar 50 billion of annual imports on which the administration imposed 25 percent tariffs in the summer.

China has tried repeatedly over the past year and a half to allay American concerns about its government subsidized investments in high tech industries by offering to guarantee very large purchases from the United States of everything from soybeans to helicopters.

But the Trump administration and the American business community have mostly been leery about such a potentially short term fix if it does not address long term issues involving Chinas government backed drive for high tech competitiveness. Some market oriented economists in China have also advocated limits on the governments industrial policies, because they worry about the ever rising debt associated with them.

If we dont address the deeper issues, neither side will be doing itself any favors, said Tim Stratford, who is the chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and the managing partner of the Beijing office of the Covington and Burling law firm.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi agreed in Buenos Aires on Dec. 1 on a stopgap compromise that does not fully satisfy either side but might prove durable. Mr. Trump agreed not to raise tariffs further then but kept in place the tariffs he had already imposed, while China removed most of the retaliation that it had imposed.

That deal has not satisfied trade hawks in the United States, who want broader changes in the bilateral relationship, or the more nationalistic wing of the Chinese Communist Party, which perceived the deal as representing, to some extent, a Chinese retreat.

Opinion Amazon to New York Fuhgeddaboudit! The New York Times

Readers are split over Amazons change of plan for its HQ2.

To the Editor:

Re nytimes.com, Feb. 14 :

Amazon doesnt like democracy. When people start asking tough questions, it cant take the heat.

In 2017, in federal income taxes. Jeff Bezos is the richest man on the planet. This is not a company that needs several billion of our tax dollars as a bribe. Amazon projected that it would employ more than 25,000 people in its so called HQ2. Google plans to expand to some 20,000 employees in New York City without a public subsidy.

Opponents of the project were asking questions that Amazon didnt like answering. Is it wrong to ask this giant company if it planned to fight unionization? Or to ask why the City Council was cut out of the planning process? These are reasonable questions. Amazon was intent on being the master — but New Yorkers have a different idea about the future of our city.

Peter HognessBrooklyn

To the Editor:

It was sensible to give Amazon large tax breaks in exchange for its huge investment. Thousands of quality jobs would have been created, thereby generating fresh tax revenues in perpetuity. And successful investments tend to attract more investments. Conversely, anti development policies reap what they sow. New York City will lose much more than just Amazon for years to come.

A relatively small gaggle of entitled citizens, unions and servile politicians shouldnt have been able to destroy this precious opportunity.

Jeff HermanStockbridge, Mass.

To the Editor:

, by Kenneth Jackson Op Ed, Feb. 14 , states that New Yorks reputation as a center of economic opportunity would sink if we rejected Amazon.

New York Citys reputation lies in its people, architecture, art, food, culture and music. Its a true city for all, with Queens being the most diverse part, where middle and working class people can still afford to live. Amazon would have changed that, for the worse.

We need to look to Seattle to see what would have happened here. Many of the well paying Amazon jobs in its first headquarters went to people who moved there. The rapid influx of high earners caused increased housing costs, higher rents for small businesses and transportation gridlock.

Amazon coming into Queens would have set off a chain reaction of displacement throughout the borough. This is exactly the reason we protested Amazon and are happy it is not coming here!

Doreen DeignanSunnyside, Queens

To the Editor:

It is unfortunate that Kenneth Jacksons attempt to bring facts, reason and historical context to the debate over Amazons planned move to New York City did not affect the outcome. He mentioned the historical losses in jobs and tax revenues from the disappearance of breweries and the decline of manufacturing, to which I would add the longstanding concern over volatility in the citys financial services sector.

For years, New York City officials have struggled with our overreliance on this sector for jobs and taxes, and the critical need to diversify our economy. Amazons initial decision to come to the city was a huge diversification opportunity, and we let it slip away. By allowing the debate to be driven by the short term thinking of vocal oppositionists, we have signaled to Amazon that it is not welcome here. The loss is ours.

Thomas SchickBrooklynThe writer is a retired executive vice president at American Express.

To the Editor:

In explaining why it is canceling plans to build a corporate campus in Queens, Amazon says that a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence.

No, they dont. They oppose giving dollar 3 billion in tax breaks for 25,000 jobs. Thats more than a hundred thousand dollars per job, an amount thats difficult to justify during a period of very low unemployment.

Shaun BreidbartPelham, N.Y.

To the Editor:

Now that Amazon has decided not to build in Long Island City, there are very different possible reactions: Regret that our local politicians and union leaders were so negative and refused to encourage the bright side of this potential deal, or joy that after one sided negotiations, this behemoth of a company is taking its business elsewhere.

The third possible reaction is sadness that they couldnt find common ground to encourage a reasonable compromise between Amazon and the Long Island City community that would be its new home.

Ultimately, New York City is the real loser.

Aquaman, Khal Drogo actor can play Duncan Idaho in the new Dune movie [Videos] - Duration: 5:36.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Aquaman star Jason Momoa – who immortalized the Dothraki Warlord Khal Drogo's first season of Game of Thrones – is in negotiations to depict another science fiction warrior, Duncan Idaho from Dune Frank Herbs' popular science fiction novel from 1965

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, this new filming is expected to be recorded later this year

(Mild spoiler for the original novel.) Dune is used in the distant future (where else?) And follows the fortunes of various noble houses in a feudal interstellar society

Much of the action takes place on the planet Arrakis, where the economy is driven primarily by a rare life-prolonging drug called melange ("spice"), which also provides a kind of prior knowledge

Space travel is faster than light, a prophecy of a messianic figure, giant sandworms, and many battles, as protagonist Paul Atreides (a duke's son) seeks to defeat the forces of Shaddam IV, the emperor of the known Universe

] This short summary hardly does justice to the far-reaching size and enormous cultural influence of Herbert's novel

In its first publication, the Chicago Tribune called it "one of the monuments of modern science fiction

" Astronomers have used the names of many fictional planets in Dune to identify various topographical features on Saturn's moon Titan

Herbert wrote five sequels, and the franchise also includes board games, computer games and numerous prequels and sequels written by his son Brian Herbert with Kevin J

Anderson.     It took 20 years before Dune was eventually rebuilt by director David Lynch into a movie in which Kyle MacLachlan co-starred as Paul Atreides

It was an impressive achievement that brought so much of Herold's original vision to life

However, the plot was significantly different from the novel, the acting was lead-free and the film was critically postponed

(It has not improved over time, the film is almost unbeatable.) The author was satisfied with the result and acknowledged the freedoms he had gained, but insisted that he "go through my dialogue could hear "

At the box office, however, failed, only 30.9 million dollars were recorded at a budget of $ 40 million

In 2000, SyFy adapted the novel into an Emmy Award-winning six-part miniseries, Frank Herbert's Dune followed by a follow-up miniseries in 2003 Frank Herbert's Children of Dune

Both are among the station's top rated channels. In the new adaptation of Legendary Pictures, Momoa will play Duncan Idaho, the swordmaster of House House Atreides and the trusted advisor to Paul

As our own Lee Hutchinson says, "Idaho is basically the C-3PO / R2D2 of Dune – it's the only character present for every single book, no matter how implausible it is

" (The late Richard Jordan played Duncan in the 1984 film and James Watson played him in the SyFi miniseries

) He joins an already outstanding cast, including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin

Spains Prime Minister Calls Snap Election The New York Times - Duration: 3:23.

Spains Prime Minister Calls Snap Election The New York Times

MADRID — Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain on Friday called for a snap general election in April, opening a new chapter of national turmoil as the territorial conflict over Catalonia continues to weigh on the countrys politics.

The announcement from Mr. Sánchez came two days after his minority Socialist government suffered a in Parliament, when opposition lawmakers banded together with Mr. Sánchezs erstwhile Catalan allies to reject his budget plan.

Mr. Sánchez in June, but he was in a weakened state from the start because his Socialist Party held less than one quarter of the seats in Parliament.

His ascension was more a reflection of frustration with his predecessor, Mariano Rajoy, than an endorsement of his Socialists.

Mr. Sánchez is one of few Socialist leaders left in Europe, and he has stood out as a supporter of increased European integration at a time when populists in Italy and elsewhere have been challenging the European Union and Britain has been negotiating its exit from the bloc.

The snap election is to take place on April 28, in a televised address on Friday.

The decision is in the Spanish peoples hands and whatever they decide it will be a success, he said.

The vote is expected to confirm a growing polarization and party fragmentation in Spain, where the two party system was broken up in 2015 and where no single party has won a parliamentary majority since Mr. Rajoy swept into power in 2011.

Spain suffered almost a year of political limbo in 2016, after two inconclusive elections meant that four parties could claim a significant share of the seats in Parliament. After months of bitter haggling, Spains political divisions have increased, notably because of the emergence in December of Vox, a .

Even before his budget was defeated on Wednesday, Mr. Sánchez had been struggling to maintain an unwieldy alliance that included the far left Podemos party and nationalist parties from Catalonia and the Basque region.

After taking office, one of Mr. Sánchezs main pledges was to renew political dialogue with the governing pro independence movement in Catalonia, which reached a boiling point in October 2017, when separatist politicians to secede.

But Mr. Sánchez got nowhere in his talks with Quim Torra, the separatist leader of Catalonia, who also took office in June. Instead, Mr. Torra turned his back on Mr. Sánchez´s government by withdrawing Catalan support for the national budget because of the prime ministers refusal to negotiate a new independence referendum, following the chaotic vote, which was determined to be unconstitutional, held in October 2017.

The snap general election adds to an already heavy agenda for Spanish voters. On May 26, Spain is scheduled to hold municipal and regional elections that will coincide with those for the European Parliament.

The timing of the general election means that Catalonia will feature strongly during the campaign, since the vote will coincide with a landmark that started on Tuesday at the Spanish Supreme Court. Twelve former Catalan leaders have been accused of rebellion and sedition during the attempt to secede in 2017, and the trial is expected to last about three months.

Vox, the far right party that will be hoping to gain its first seats in the national Parliament, will also plays a front line role in the Catalan trial. The party has filed its own set of charges against the former Catalan leaders, demanding far stiffer prison sentences than the maximum of 25 years sought by state prosecutors.

Isner scores his first win of 2019, over Tomic at the New York Open - Duration: 3:27.

After supporting Monfils in Sofia, Svitolina turns her focus on Doha Third-seeded Kerber hopes the tenth time is the charm in Doha UNIONDALE, N

Y.—The task of winning a match against John Isner for Bernard Tomic came down to two factors: 1) not blinking on your own serve; 2) if the first factor is satisfied, pulling through in the tiebreaks

Tomic, in the second round of the New York Open on Wednesday, came ever so close to succeeding on both fronts, but ultimately succumbed to the top-seeded American

He fell, 7-6 (7), 6-4, though the match felt much closer. Such are the slim margins at play when facing the game's best server

"Nothing separated us, especially in that first set," Isner said. Tomic's serve, a weapon itself, finally let him down in the first-set tiebreaker when, down 7-8, he spun an 82-m

p.h. softball into the middle of box, ripe for Isner to rip a hard forehand return

It would come back too hot for Tomic to handle, giving Isner the opening set. The second set appeared to be heading toward a tiebreak as well, but Tomic again had a lapse at the worst possible moment, this time serving at 4-5

"All of a sudden, I was up 0-40," Isner said. "He made two errors that he hadn't really made the whole match, and I hit a great return

" In a last-ditch effort, Tomic saved all three match points, largely on the back of his serve, with the added help of an Isner mishit

"The 30-40 one, I'd like to have that back," Isner said, "Because I was in the point and I had a mid-court forehand, and it hit the cheap seats

" The final blow took a while for Isner to land—watch it above—but three more match points, two deft volleys and one netted Tomic forehand later, the world No

9 sealed the second set, 6-4. He'll play another Aussie, Jordan Thompson, in the quarterfinals

The win is Isner's first of 2019, snapping a six-match losing streak dating back to the Paris Masters

Jennifer, Rush! I'm SO EXCITED about the new 80s pack on #musicmakerjam! I spent 330 free Beatcoins - Duration: 10:30.

There is a new 80s mix pack on Music Maker Jam!

I'm so excited!

These vocals are not MMJ (added externally)

The time travel pack means massive synths, pads and ...

Drums!

In the 2nd half of this video, we'll also do an 80s ballad.

Vocals from the J-Pop pack take a trip on the time machine to the 80s.

No 80s song without hovering pads

"CuteSwedishPopChords" added from J-Pop

But where are the guitars?!?

I love the "Gloria Poly" synth melody.

Gloria also plays guitar

Quintessential: The melodic chord changes.

But this pack can do more than disco dancing.

After the guitar solo we'll explore slow dancing.

Guitar Solo?!?

The pack also has its own vocals ...

... but they are no match for Gloria's synth

But what does Jennifer Rush have to do with all of this?

Well, it turns out that you can also time travel to slow dancing in the school gym in 1984.

Bass lines like this were all the rage in 1984.

Just like electric pianos, mullets and Jennifer Rush.

Boring

How about adding a Dubstep loop?

Note: These are not MMJ vocals (added externally).

Let's check if they give us any other ballad material.

There is a pad named Whitney

Whitney was so big in 1985 ...

... that MMJ also named a bass after her.

... and drums. And an Electric Piano.

Ironically, the singer is not named Whitney.

But guess the name of the synth melody...

What could they possibly name the guitar?

Next up: A look at the official demo song.

But first, let's listen to the Time Travel vocals.

They have a lead-in that I neglected here.

Oops!

Better check the demo song (coming up in a few seconds)

this is the demo song
