The Pomeranian and the American Eskimo Dog; two small Spitz breeds that share a lot of

similarities.

But, although they share heredity, the two are not interchangeable.

Let's compare these two loveable breeds Dog vs. Dog.

You're Watching Animal Facts!

History

The forerunners of today's Pomeranian breed and the American Eskimo Dog were large working

dogs from the Arctic regions, the same ancestors as today's Huskies and Malamutes.

And both are considered to be descendants of the German Spitz.

The Pomeranian is thought to have acquired its name by association with the area known

as Pomerania which is located in northern Poland and Germany along the Baltic Sea.

Although not the origin of the breed, this area is credited with the breeding which led

to the original Pomeranian type of dog.

Proper documentation was lacking until the breed's introduction into the United Kingdom.

We do know that the Pomeranian was not always the tiny dog it is today.

Although called the American Eskimo Dog, we can trace the breed back to Germany and Northern

Europe.

European immigrants brought their Spitz pets with them to the United States, especially

New York, in the early 1900s, descended from the larger German Spitz, the Keeshond, the

white Pomeranian, and the Italian Spitz, the Volpino Italiano.

The breed was first officially recognized as the "American Eskimo" in 1919 by the American

United Kennel Club, although we are not quite sure why the name was chosen.

The first written record and history of the breed was printed in 1958.

Enough about their history, let's get to the fun stuff.

Personality

The Eskie is smart, friendly and a good communicator.

Its alert nature makes it an excellent watchdog, but beware!

The Eskie is highly vocal.

Eskies get along with most everyone they meet but are not always patient with tight squeezes

from children.

Closely supervise interactions with young children, and teach them how to pet the Eskie

gently.

An American Eskimo should never be shy or aggressive.

The Pomeranian has a proud and glamorous appearance with a personality to match.

The Pom is an extrovert who is clever and lively.

They have a take-charge temperament and tend not to be fearful of strangers or other animals.

For more than a century, the Pom has had a well-deserved reputation for being a great

watchdog.

It may weigh only a few pounds, but it views himself as absolute guardian of his home and

family.

The perfect little Pom is calm and easy to live with.

It enjoys sitting in your lap and giving kisses.

Poms do like to bark.

Poms may look like toys, but they are not good pets for young children.

They are too delicate to be handled roughly, and they prefer the company of adults.

Coat and Colors

As Spitz breeds, both share a long Double Coat, which gives them a pretty good tolerance

to cold weather, although they certainly aren't Huskies.

And, no one would ever say either of these breeds is low maintenance when it comes to

grooming needs, but overall the Pom is a little easier to keep up with.

The American Eskimo Dog has a straight coat and is a heavy shedder of both fur and dander

and has high grooming needs.

The Pomeranian, while definitely not light on the shedding of fur and dander rates about

average.

The Pomeranian is a colorful breed.

You can find Poms in almost every color and color combination known to dogdom.

You could literally have dozens of Poms and not have two of the same color or color combination.

The American Eskimo comes in two colors.

White and White with Biscuit patches, which is a light red cream.

Size

The modern Pomeranian is a tiny dog at about 3-7 pounds and 7-12 inches tall.

It is a true toy dog.

Part of the Non-sporting group, the American Eskimo's size varies considerably with three

size ranges: toys weighing between 6-10 pounds at 9-12 inches tall, miniature weighing between

10-20 pounds at 12-15 inches tall and standard which are between 25-35 pounds and 15-19 inches

tall.

There's an American Eskimo Dog to fit any space.

Trainability

The strong-willed Eskie needs a confident owner who can take charge in teaching and

leading him.

The Eskie learns quickly, however, so training is usually fun and highly successful.

Poms are notoriously difficult to train.

They like to be the boss and don't take kindly to someone telling them what to do.

They are stubborn, bossy, manipulative and require gentle but firm leadership.

Consistency is the key to training.

Poms don't have to be unruly; they can be trained and socialized to be well-mannered.

Food is an excellent motivational tool, as is lots of happy, exuberant praise.

Keep training sessions short, but never let your Pom decide when it's time to pack it

in.

Activity Levels

Both dogs have high energy levels.

With its high energy level, the Eskie has high exercise needs.

Eskies must have regular opportunities to vent their energy and use their busy minds.

Otherwise, they can become rambunctious and bored, which usually leads to barking, chewing

and other destructive behaviors.

A bored American Eskimo Dog can wreak havoc on your home and yard.

Although the Pomeranian is a high energy dog, its exercise needs are minimal and when it

does need to burn off some energy, a run up and down a hallway or a romp on the living

room floor will usually suffice.

But, most of the time your Pom will be happy sitting on a lap.

Health and Lifespan

Both breeds have similar lifespans of between 12-16 years, although there are plenty of

examples of them living much longer.

Overall the American Eskimo is a much healthier dog.

But it does have common ailments such as Cataracts, Hip Dysplasia, Legg-Perthes Disease (a degenerative

disease of the femur bone of the hind legs) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.

The Pomeranian has a whole list of common health concerns, such as Allergies, Cataracts,

Collapsed Trachea, Dry Eye, Epilepsy, Hip Dysplasia, Legg-Perthes Disease, Patellar

Luxation or kneecap dislocation.

So which breed suits you?

Let us know in the comments.

The Pomeranian is certainly the more popular breed, consistently ranked in the top 20 breeds

by AKC registration.

For overall health and trainability the American Eskimo Dog could be a better choice.

But, if you want a sweet little lap dog that is content to hang out on the couch with you

while you watch Animal Facts, who'll maybe not cover your entire house with fur, the

Pom is definitely up to the task.

Of course, there is always the Pomino, a cute designer mix of these two breeds if you are

having a hard time choosing.

Netflix vs YouTube - Which Video Streaming Service Do Teens Like More? - Duration: 4:40.

Vincent Shen: I'm curious now, who's your pick among the newcomers in pay TV?

We're looking away from traditional cable companies, things like that.

Who's your MVP?

Dan Kline: I mean, I feel weird saying this is a newcomer, but you can't argue with what Netflix is doing.

Whether you have cable or don't have cable, in the U.S., two-thirds of you with cable have Netflix.

It's kind of a stunning number of subscribers.

If you said today, "From scratch, I'm going to create a company that has the intellectual

property that Netflix now controls, and the amount of hit shows that they own outright,"

it's almost impossible. Netflix came together almost by accident.

It was a service that was basically just rebroadcasting other people's stuff that dabbled in originals

that had some hits and has gone to the tune of about $6 billion a year in creating this

massive firewall of originals.

Other than Disney, which obviously owns a ton of originals, and maybe Comcast,

there is nobody out there.

If you and I had $20 billion to start a streaming service, that wouldn't get us to half of what

Netflix has now. That's a very hard business to go after.

Shen: I think most Fools are familiar with the Netflix story.

There's one data point that I'll make here to emphasize what I think will shape up to

be a really nice tailwind for Netflix long-term.

There's this latest Piper Jaffray Taking Stock

with Teens survey. I think you've heard of this, Dan.

Kline: Yes.

Shen: They said that Netflix and YouTube accounted for 70% of the daily video

consumption among teenagers. 70%. There's an honorable mention for Alphabet's YouTube.

I know that service has started to offer an ad-free experience with the monthly subscription.

They also have their own YouTube TV bundle.

In the same survey, cable TV's share of daily consumption among teens stood at just 16%.

That's down from 30% just three years ago.

I bring that up because Dan, you and I have discussed this before, it's the very real

potential for younger consumers and TV subscribers to basically grow up never having access

to these traditional pay TV packages, meaning they'll never really miss it or have the desire

to sign up for it as they grow older, because there are all these other alternatives.

I do think there's something there.

Kline: Yeah. There's also a seismic shift of my generation.

I'm, I don't know, 18 years older than you, something like that.

We wanted a bigger television.

I went from the 13-inch black and white television to, now I have a 60-inch big wall television.

My son will happily watch "TV," YouTube or whatever, on his phone, in a room that has

a big television that has YouTube on it, if you wanted to be watching those things.

I think that's a seismic shift. You're right, you can't miss something you don't have.

That said, I do think as people get older and they get into relationships and they have kids,

cable TV starts to make more sense. I think that's the firewall for the industry.

You don't have kids yet, but if I want to watch the NFL, and my wife wants to watch

a Lifetime movie, and my son wants to watch Cartoon Network, I could probably buy all

those things in streaming packages, but it's easier to have cable.

I do think that's going to protect the industry. Young people also live in dorm rooms.

They're not used to having a big house yet.

At some point, most of them go out and get a decent-sized house.

I don't think this is the end of cable, as some have predicted.

Shen: Sure. With that, keep in mind, we've seen similar trends, though, where a new market will go

without something that the more developed markets think is necessary.

I think about, for example, how mobile phones are the primary computing device in a lot

of developing markets.

If you think about personal computers, they aren't taking as much of a hold, as much of

the market, in those regions.

It changes the equation entirely for how people are using their computers, how people are

using their mobile phones.

It's interesting to see how that will evolve for this younger generation now, where, for example,

they're watching it all on this six-inch screen on their phones.

Fuel spill on Florida highway sparks fireball which leaves seven dead - Duration: 5:18.

At least seven people have been killed and eight more injured after a huge fuel spill on Interstate 75 in Florida sparked a massive fireball following a crash between four vehicles

Two big rigs and two passenger vehicles collided spilling 50 gallons of diesel across the Florida highway, sparking the blaze that killed seven

Some of those caught up in the crash are thought to be a group of children who were heading to Disney World

Horrifying footage from the scene showed the huge fire engulfing several motors and it was so intense the flames damaged parts of the road around a mile south of Alachua, near Gainesville

Eight other people were taken to the hospital, some with critical injuries, according to reports

Emergency crews extinguished the fire and said they were treating the crash as a homicide investigation

Two tractor trailers, a van and a midsize sedan were involved in the mid afternoon crash

Alachua County Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey said they were working to verify dispatch records which indicated one vehicle carried a group of children who were heading to Disney World

The Gainsville Sun reports five of those who died were in a passenger van and one was in one of the crashed tractor-trailers

It is not known of they were the driver or a passenger.Authorities said debris, including personal property and vehicle parts, were left scattered across the road

Spokesman Lieutenant Patrick Riordan, said: 'There's going to be families that need to be notified that their loves ones have perished

'He said it is unclear whether the victims were killed in the wreck or whether they burned in the fire, which would make identification more difficult

Lieutenant P.V. Riordan told NBC News: 'There was significant damage with the two tractor trailers and with that much abrasion, I'm not surprised that we had a fire

'I think we've got a long night ahead of us. We've got a lot of debris, we've got a lot of damage to the road

We've got a lot of work ahead of us with regard to the investigation.'  The horror crash, in the northbound lanes, closed part of the highway in both directions and caused major delays

Southbound lanes were also closed to keep a route open for first responders, according to the Alachua County Sherriff's office

They said the emergency 'required all hands on deck.'A helicopter arrived to search for any victims who may have been in nearby woods

Eyewitness Nicole Towarek told The Gainsville Sun: 'The heat, it was insane.'

News24 - Man United legend Paul Scholes reveals which of Liverpool or Man City he wants to win the - Duration: 1:57.

A Manchester United legend having to pick between Liverpool or Manchester City for the Premier League title is certainly not an easy or pleasant situation to find themselves in

Unfortunately, that looks very much the case for former Red Devils star Paul Scholes this season, with reigning champions City hosting Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium this evening

MORE: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals what he told Manchester United players before record-equalling fourth win in a row  Jurgen Klopp's side go into the game top of the table and in with a chance of winning their first title since all the way back in 1990

The alternative, however, is City clawing themselves back into the race with a victory to perhaps establish themselves as favourites to retain their crown once again

For Scholes, however, the choice is an easy one, he says, as he insists he wants City to win tonight, suggesting they'd be his clear pick out of the two to go on and lift the trophy

A United boy through and through, it sounds like it should be a harder decision than this, but clearly of the two rivalries, it is the one with the Merseyside giants that is the strongest

When asked if it was a difficult choice, he replied, as quoted by the Mirror: 'No it's not, I want City to win

They found people who shared a diary of their daily lives with friends and followers were spurred on by positive feedback.

More than 50 per cent of people said the support of a weight loss community was crucial when it came to changing their eating habits and 53 per cent shared photos of their meals on social media.

With this knowledge under their belts, Weight Watchers has launched a series of short films which show people recording their daily weight loss journey.

Which players have improved most under Man United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? - Duration: 12:04.

After four wins from four, Manchester United appear to be a team transformed under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Wednesday night's visit to Newcastle United was the toughest assignment yet for Solskjaer but his rejuvenated side passed the test to maintain his 100 per cent start

The feel-good factor has been restored to Old Trafford following the misery of Jose Mourinho's final few months and United are playing free-flowing football again in their best tradition

On face value, it looks like the change of manager has brought the best out of every member of the United team but we have picked out five who have stood out

Pogba has been playing as though liberated from a 10-ton weight since Solskjaer replaced Mourinho in the dug-out

This really should come as little surprise with the catastrophic breakdown in the relationship between the French World Cup winner and United's former manager well documented

Mourinho clashed with Pogba over tactics last season, barely acknowledged his impressive form at the World Cup and then stripped him of the vice-captaincy in front of his team-mates

Given Pogba's effervescent personality and his influence within the squad, especially on its younger members, this created a schism in the dressing room that Mourinho couldn't recover from

While Pogba did show unnecessary disrespect with his social media reaction to Mourinho's sacking, he has at least redeemed himself with a string of superb performances since

Pogba has finally started to play like an £89million footballer, scoring four times and creating another three in the wins over Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Newcastle

That goal return is the same as he managed in his previous 20 matches under Mourinho and after what was the most productive month of his career Pogba unsurprisingly won the club's best player award for December

His performance against Newcastle was more subdued but we Pogba still showed remarkable work rate and took the chance to extend those long legs in a forward burst at every opportunity

Compared to the average displays under Mourinho, every aspect of Pogba's game has improved, from successful passes to distance run

He looks born again at Old Trafford and all that transfer talk of an escape to Barcelona or back to Juventus has quietly faded away

For the time being at least, Solskjaer will build his side around a Pogba in imperious form

And that's how it should have been from the moment he arrived.Having scored just two Premier League goals all season under Mourinho, Rashford now has three in four under Solskjaer in another transformation in form

Like Pogba, the 21-year-old striker has seen his confidence surge and, as well as scoring, has been pulling off all kinds of audacious passes and tricks

Witness the outrageous piece of skill to beat Bournemouth's Nathan Ake and Sergio Rico to set up a goal for Pogba last Sunday

And that was followed up by a smart finish later in the match for United's third and a composed strike to wrap up the win at Newcastle

That came after his Cristiano Ronaldo-esque free-kick was spilled by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka for Romelu Lukaku's opening goal

The fact Rashford now has the confidence - or has been given the licence - to even try such set-pieces from outlandish distances speaks to the sense of freedom Solskjaer has brought

Rashford is producing the same kind of sparkling form he produced when he first burst onto the scene in 2016 and he is being spoken about in the highest terms once again

As Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said: 'Rashford playing up front is fantastic - I love him to bits

He's played nearly 150 games at the age of 21 and his potential is enormous.'It's actually now stepping up beyond potential to where he will be a top class player

' It helps that Solskjaer was a striker himself and knows innately what to say and do on the training field to get his forwards' confidence flowing again

It's been a testing few months for Romelu Lukaku, a striker who scored 27 times last season but looked increasingly bereft of confidence under Mourinho

The Belgian had mustered just six Premier League goals in the first half of the campaign under Mourinho and failed to find the net in the Champions League group stage

Having missed the first two matches of Solskjaer's tenure, he now has two in two and both from making an immediate impact off the bench

Lukaku scored just two minutes after coming on in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth and bettered that with an intervention after merely 38 seconds at Newcastle

Of course Solskjaer, the ultimate super sub, knows more than most about making an impact and that seems to be rubbing off

It will be interesting to see whether Lukaku, with his scoring confidence now restored, is satisfied in playing that role week-in, week-out

You suspect not but at least the free-scoring form of Rashford, Lukaku and Anthony Martial gives Solskjaer a pleasant dilemma

For Lukaku - who scored 27 last season, some 14 more than next-highest United scorer Rashford - it does mean a sharing of the burden

The last four matches have seen a far greater energy about United's midfield and that isn't just reserved to Pogba

Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic have both produced improved performances, with United zipping the ball around with far greater urgency and purpose compared to most matches under Mourinho

And when out of possession, they have been snappier in winning the ball back, albeit playing largely against opponents unable to punish them

Matic has been a good example, losing his tendency to pass the ball sideways and occupy a conservative position just in front of the back four

Solskjaer shifted the starting positions of United's midfield 20 yards further forward, at a stroke injecting a greater purpose to their play

Matic is not only working harder but is finding more forward passes to spring United on the attack

It helps that he has more willing runners ahead of him.It will be interesting to see whether this changed when United play Tottenham on January 13 in what is the first real test of the Solskjaer reign

Slim pickings admittedly, but Shaw was one of the plus points of the turbulent season opening under Mourinho

Having taken more than his fair share of criticism from the former boss, the left-back had responded with some of his best performances in a United shirt

And while he may have been the last to hear about Mourinho's sacking and Solskjaer's arrival - Shaw admitted his girlfriend burst into the room to break the news - he has looked even better under the caretaker

Given licence at last to push forward down the left flank, Shaw has become more a part of the United attack than he has ever been before

His average position on the pitch has moved further forward and he's been able to deliver more crosses, make more runs and link up more often with the forward line

Still only 23, we may be seeing Shaw start to mature into the kind of dynamic wing-back everyone hoped he would become

Liverpool or Man City? Harry Redknapp reveals WHICH team he was supporting last night - Duration: 2:49.

Liverpool lead Manchester City by four points at the top of the Premier League table

That gap could have been 10 had the Reds not lost to City at the Etihad on Thursday night

Liverpool are gunning for their first English title since the Premier League was formed

But they couldn't get past a resolute City side who themselves are seeking to defend their crown

**PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 - FREE TO PLAY HERE** After the 2-1 defeat, Redknapp was asked who he is supporting in the title race

He told talkSPORT: "It was a great game. "It was tempo of the game was amazing. The pace of it

"I'd be honest I'd like to see Liverpool win the league this year. It would be great

"I was in the Red corner last night. "It was a bit disappointing in the end but it's blown (the title battle) wide open and it's going to be some title race for sure

" Liverpool looked good for at least a draw at the Etihad after Roberto Firmino had cancelled out Sergio Aguero's first-half opener

But Leroy Sane popped up with 18 minutes left to secure the three points for City

And Redknapp was enthralled with the entertainment on show. "The pace was unbelievable," he added

"There was no rest, no time to dwell on the ball. "It was press everywhere. It was amazing

"You have to be a really good player to play under those conditions last night." Liverpool and City now turn their attention to the FA Cup, with ties against Wolves and Rotherham to come respectively

Liverpool then play Brighton, Crystal Palace and Leicester in the Premier League before the month is out

As for City, they face Wolves, Huddersfield and Newcastle before crunch ties with Arsenal and Chelsea in February
