To make the beaded ornaments we're using floral wire. It's also called armature wire and it's 12 gauge.
We're also using craft wire. That's 26 gauge.
We have ribbon here. That's quarter-inch. We chose red just to go with our pretty colors here, but you can use any color you'd like.
Now we have an assortment of acrylic beads.
We've got some that are faceted and round. We've got some that are flowers in all different colors and all different sizes.
Then we've got some sequins, again all different colors and sizes.
Just round and then we've got some with little flower shaped ones as well.
Super cute. For tools we have round-nose pliers and wire cutters.
To get started we're going to cut a 13 inch piece of our floral wire. And
this floral wire, armature wire, is really easy to bend which is great.
That's why we're using it for this project 'cause it's really easy to handle and bend.
That's about 13 inches.
So I'm just going to use my wire cutters
just to cut that piece of wire. And
this armature wire or floral wire cuts like a butter. It's amazing.
So now that we've got our piece of wire here
what we want to do is find the center and to do that and I'm just going to fold it over
and kind of gently find the middle there. And
then we're going to make the bottom of our heart. And to do that
we're going to use our round-nose pliers.
And I'm just going to grasp right in the middle of my round-nose pliers.
And I'm going to kind of bend it 90 degrees. Like that. And just straighten one side. Just like that.
And that's going to make one side of our heart. Then I'm going to reposition so that I'm kind of holding on to that
straight part and I'm going to bend this like 90 degrees. Like that. And make it nice and straight.
So see I've got like a little ninety degree bend there now.
I'm going to fold it in just a little bit.
What that does is gives us a
little bit more of a point because otherwise it ends up just being sort of rounded at the bottom.
Now what we want to do is shape the top of our heart, and you could do it just by hand,
but we found that the best thing to do is to use something to create the little shapes at the top of a heart, the
little curves. So we're using nail polish as a mandrel.
We just chose this because it's about an inch in diameter and it works nicely and to get a nice rounded shape at the top.
So what I'm going to do is just bend the wire around on one side, like that. And
then I'm going to keep it there and then do the other side around
the nail polish as well, or our mandrel.
I'll call it a mandrel rather than nail polish. You can really use anything you can find in your house
that's about the right diameter. And by doing it at the same time, you'll end up with roughly
the same size and length on each side.
So I'll remove my nail polish and then when I pull the little sides apart, you'll see we almost have a heart already.
Now what we want to do is make little curves in our the ends of our wire here.
But if we made a little curve right now with this as long as it is, we would end up with a big coil
right there. And for this project we decided we just want a little loop on either side.
So what I'm going to do is shorten this,
each side, before I make my little loop. So I'm going to cut about
about a half of an inch off each side and
I'm just using my wire cutters for that and I'm just eyeballing. It does not have to be perfect.
So now what I want to do is again use my round-nose pliers
and I'm going to use the fattest part of my pliers and I'm going to grab on to the end like that and
I'm just going to rotate
to start making a loop.
I'm going to reposition my pliers again
and that way I can rotate some more and keep going around that fattest part of
my
pliers. Like that. And that'll make a little loop, like that. How cute that is already?
I'm going to do the same thing on the other side.
Grasp onto that end at the fattest part of my pliers, like that, and I'm going to rotate
like that.
I'm going to reposition a little bit so I can keep rotating and
now we've got two little loops. Very cute.
So now that we've got the base of our heart, the next thing we can do is bead.
To add the beads, you'll want to cut a 40 inch piece of the craft wire, the 26-gauge wire. And
then to get started, what we'd like to do is start in the center of our heart with our wire.
So I'm just gonna start with the end, fold that over kind of tuck it around the back,
like that, and
then I'm just gonna kind of whip this around a
couple times
around that center. Whoops! The wrong way. Go this way.
And what that does is just kind of holds the heart together so that the little center
sections don't crisscross or come apart.
There we go. It's got a little overlapping section in the middle there and then we're just gonna start beading. And
as I said,
we've got an assortment of acrylic beads and sequins here. Lots of different colors and shapes and sizes. And
what we're going to do is just pick the beads and sequins at random and wrap them around the edge of our heart here.
So I'm gonna get the end of my wire ready here and
I'm going to start with one of my bigger
beads or sequins, just because that's kind of fun to have it kind of right in the center. It kind of covers up that little
wraps, the wraps that we just did.
So we feed this right through the center of
one of our shaped sequins and I'm just going to pull that wire through
that and
I'm just going to go ahead and wrap once around one side of
the wire here. And
that's kind of the trick each time.
We're going to go around once, we'll feed on a bead or a sequin, and then go once around,
in between each bead or sequin.
So now let's see what we want to do next?
I think I'll do this turquoise bead next. And the idea, what this is, is just to create just a super fun
mishmash of beads and sequins that when it's all done ends up looking really unified and fun and playful.
It makes a really fun ornament.
So I'm just going to hold the bead kind of against the wire like that and then pull the thin wire
through the heart and then around the heart once, like that. And
then I'm ready to add my next bead or sequin. I think I'll do a little bead this time
in a color that's not the same as that turquoise color. How about this red? It's awfully pretty.
We like this project because it's super fun to do with kids or at a party.
You can buy these beads and sequins really inexpensively. They come in a giant
sort of grab bag at the craft store. Same with the sequins and the
plain sequins and the shaped sequins. They're
super inexpensive and part of why we chose the acrylic beads is not only because they're inexpensive,
but because they're super lightweight and we like that
they're lightweight because then when you hang them on a tree or
even on a package or in a window or something, you don't want something super heavy.
So it just ends up being really nice that they're so lightweight.
With a sequin it is a little bit funny
you're just going to go right around the edge and
ignore that the wire shows. That's sort of part of the look of this. And
then do the same thing we've been doing which is wrap around an extra loop around the heart like that.
So there's a wrap of wire in between
each bead or sequin. And now that I've got a few beads on there. What I want to do is add about five...
five or so onto my wire. And I think I'm going to start with this purple bead and
I'm going to get them on the wire and that way I can
make faster work of this.
Do about five at a time. I'll show you how and then we'll add a few more beads on.
So I'm just at random adding some beads
onto my wire.
We did a big one so I did a bunch of little ones. How about this big red one?
I'll do one more. I think I'll do...
This is the hardest part is picking them out. Another little...actually I'll do this little flower guy. Great.
Sliding all of the beads down to my heart.
And now what you can do is sort of move the other beads out of the way and keep one in place.
So I've got that pink bead there,
I'm going to hold on to it against the wire, and
then wrap my skinny wire, holding on to the beads so they don't fly down the wire.
Around like that.
Pull it through.
And just be careful with this, the end of the wire, when you first start working the wire is really long.
You don't want to poke anybody
with this wire.
And now I can just slide that up a little bit, take my sequin, and do the same thing.
I'm going to just hold it in place against the armature wire,
hold onto these beads, so they don't slide down my skinny wire and then wrap it around and pull
tt through.
And I'll wrap the wire around one more time
And
then let another bead slide down there in place.
Hold it against that floral wire armature wire and
then wrap the other wire around,
like that.
You can see it starts going a little bit faster when you get more beads
on the wire.
And I'm just going to keep
beading like this. I'm going to slide five more beads and sequins
onto my skinny wire and
wrap around like I've been doing. I'm going to kind of push these together a little bit more.
It's nice to sort of shift them around as you're going so that some are along the outside edge and some are kind of facing forward.
And
once I have my whole heart beaded, I'm going to show you how to create a little hanger.
It looks like we have room for one more bead there, so I think I'll use this green bead and
if you run out of wire while you're working, don't worry about it.
You can just cut a new piece of the skinny wire and just wrap it on and keep beading.
We did that back here and
you can't even tell like there's a little end there, but no one's ever going to see that.
So don't worry if you run out of wire.
I'm going to hold that green bead on and do what we've been doing, which is just wrap and
wrap again, and then because we want to finish here, I'm going to do some extra wraps and that'll just secure the wire.
Just a few more like that. And
then I'm going to turn this around and I'm going to trim the wire on the back so that that little end doesn't show.
Like that.
And you can just sort of press it down.
Super cute. And
at this point what we like to do is sort of manipulate the beads so that they're not all on the front or on the
outside edge. It's fun to move some so that they're on the inside edge, too.
Just looks a little more playful.
So you can just wiggle them around.
That's one of the fun things about this project is there's a lot of flexibility
with the beads and with the arrangement of them. You can just play with that.
Super cute.
So now all we need to do is add a little ribbon hanger. We've got a piece of our quarter inch ribbon here.
I'm going to get the ends lined up here and then I'm just going to slip
the ribbon through the center of my heart and
pull it up where the two pieces connect.
Like that. And I'm going to tuck the ribbon behind that center sequin that I have there.
You might have a center bead. You might not have anything there. But if you do have something there, tuck the ribbon behind it and
then do the start of a knot. Just tie it one time and
that'll just hold the ribbon in place and
now I'm just going to tie a little knot here at the top.
Just a simple little knot and that
makes it into a nice little hanger.
And I'm going to trim my ends so that they're even and kind of little short, looks a little bit long right now. And
now we have a darling
beaded
ornament, and this would be really pretty on a Christmas tree. It'd be super fun on a gift.
You could tie it just right under the bow.
Or you could hang it in a window! So many fun things you can do with this beautiful beaded ornament.
