4 Steps to Start a New Semester (The Right Way) - Duration: 10:13.

Don't you just love it when vacation ends and it's time to get back to school?

Me too!

But in all seriousness, it's time to get back into the groove and if you need help

setting up your new quarter or new semester for success, then this video is for you.

What's going on guys, Dr. Jubbal, MedSchoolInsiders.com.

At the beginning of a new quarter or new semester, you may feel amped and motivated to do things

differently.

But more often than not, we revert back to our old ways.

And once again, we didn't exercise as much as we wanted to, and our grades are still

not where we want them to be.

This tendency of feeling good in the moment and allowing that burst of inspiration to

positively color your future projections is called affective forecasting.

And it doesn't last.

I get it, I've been there.

But this time, we're going to use that to our advantage.

First, it is critical you set up the systems that reduce friction throughout the quarter.

The most important one being to lay out all the important information in your calendar

of choice.

This is the foundation upon which you will build your study schedule and good habits.

More on that shortly.

I opted for Google Calendar, and would input a few critical pieces of information.

First, my "Class" calendar included my lecture and small group schedule, in addition

to the building name, room number, and professor.

Second, my "Exam" calendar included mid-terms and final exams.

The reason I included this as a separate calendar is two-fold.

First, it could be a different color than the Class calendar, helping my exams to visually pop

out from the rest of my schedule.

Secondly, I could schedule automatic reminders for all events in that specific calendar.

Therefore, for each exam, Google would automatically send me a reminder 1 week in

advance, again 1 day in advance, and then 1 hour in advance.

Lastly, I created a third calendar to include any other class-related events, which I creatively

titled "Class (Other)".

In this, I input my professor's office hours (again, being careful to include the building

and location), as well as review sessions and other events that were not part of mandatory

class or exam time.

Second, Structure Your Days & Your Weeks Now that you have a framework of what your

class schedule is like, it's time to fill in your calendar with how you will spend your time.

The key is to not get too ambitious at this step.

It's better to have a good plan that you can actually adhere to rather than a perfect

plan that you ultimately give up on.

If you were to fill a jar with large rocks and sand, you would first put in the rocks and

then fill in the gaps with sand.

We're going to do the same thing here with scheduling.

Approach your schedule in the following order: First, make sure your classes and exams are

set from step one.

Second, schedule in regular exercise.

Do not overlook this step as it will help your grades in the long term!

This is going to be your activity of choice - something that you actually enjoy.

For me, that's been weight training and cycling, but for you it could be running or

swimming or dancing or really anything else.

I aimed for 4 or 5 days per week, but of course figure out what works best for you.

Next, schedule in your meal times.

You don't need more than 20 or 30 minutes per meal.

I still sometimes forget to eat meals because I get caught up with work or other things

on my plate.

No pun intended.

Last, schedule in your study time.

Again, be realistic here.

Are you really going to marathon for 5 hours immediately after coming home from class?

Probably not.

Instead, give yourself a short 30 minute break to unwind, destress, and then plan to do

a couple of Pomodoro cycles.

Now you may be wondering why I am suggesting to schedule study time last.

While study time is critical for your school success, your study schedule needs to work

into your life to be sustainable, rather than you forcing your life to meet your study requirements.

So for example, if you have dinner from 7-7:30, its easy to schedule study time before, then use dinner

as a break, and then study some more after.

In structuring your schedule, there are three additional elements to keep in mind:

First, regularly scheduled events are more likely to stick.

That means if you wake up at the same time, eat breakfast at the same time, and work out

at the same time, you're more likely to be successful than if your workouts are at

8AM some days and at 8PM on others.

Second, use necessary chores or meals as breaks from studying.

I would often come back from class, do a couple hours of studying, and use laundry or groceries

or dinner as a large study break, and then study more when I got back home.

Third, don't be too ambitious, and make sure you schedule in enough time for relaxation

and buffer time.

See if you can have either Sunday or Saturday completely free from any studying.

This will require you to be very efficient during the week, and it will also contribute

to a healthy social life and healthy mind, which ultimately is more sustainable in the

long term.

Remember, we're going for a marathon here, not a sprint.

Number three, Get Your Materials in Order It's key you get your materials in order

before classes start.

You don't want to be falling behind because you don't have books yet. That's a terrible way to start the quarter

Again, minimize the chances of getting derailed early in the quarter or semester, and you'll

have a much better outcome.

That being said, you shouldn't blindly buy every textbook listed in the syllabus.

To most effectively prepare for your class, I recommend you first speak with at least

2 separate friends who have already taken the course before.

Ask them what the professor's testing style is like, if they teach or test straight from

the textbook, and whether or not the book is necessary.

If your two friends have conflicting opinions, then ask a third.

And when in doubt, err on the side of buying a book versus not.

Even better, ask your friends if you can borrow their books for the quarter.

I did this multiple times and returned the favor as well.

If you're on a tighter budget, consider going to the library when you need to access

the textbook.

I personally did not do this, because if another student is using the textbook when you intend

to, it can completely derail your studying.

PDF's and other digital copies of textbooks, if available, can be cheaper and

more accessible alternatives.

I generally bought books from Amazon or the campus bookstore, and would resell them

used on Amazon when the quarter was done.

You can also opt to rent books if you'd rather not deal with the process of selling.

And number four, Keep Busy (But Not Too Busy) Over the years I've become intimately familiar

with Parkinson's Law.

Parkinson's Law states that work expands to fill the time allotted to it.

I've found there's a sweet spot during which I am most productive.

If I don't have a plan for the day and don't feel at least a little pushed for time, I'm just not as efficient.

Similarly, if I have too many things lined up for the day, my efficiency may be pushed

to the limit on that day, but the following day I'll be drained and burned out.

As with most things in life, the middle is the sweet spot, where there's a slight amount of stress to be helpful, but

not enough to be detrimental.

To achieve this balance, I suggest you kill two birds with one stone by joining interesting

and fulfilling extracurricular organizations.

If you're a pre-med student, choosing your extracurriculars wisely is essential to bolster

the strongest possible application for medical school.

Do not look at this as a way to check a box.

Instead, see it as an opportunity to develop the skills and qualities necessary to be an

effective future physician.

Through these extracurriculars, you'll learn additional skills, make new friends, and have

a lot of fun.

While I did research and volunteer in the hospital, I also competed with a dance team

and was a graphic designer for my university's events organization.

If you need help figuring out which extracurriculars to pursue and at which points during your

college career, I recommend you check out our Pre-Med Roadmap to Medical School Acceptance

Course.

In it, you'll find everything you need to effectively plan out a successful college

career to set yourself up for a medical school acceptance.

It goes over everything from when and how to pursue research, including the various

types, to the timeline of letters of recommendation, optimal MCAT scheduling, recommended extracurricular

activities, and much much more.

It was created from the ground up by our team of top doctors with combined dozens of years

of medical school admissions experience.

This course comes with a 100% 30-day money back guarantee.

If you're not satisfied for any reason, we'll give you a full refund.

Talk about a good deal.

The Truth About the New Toyota Supra and Why You Should Be Mad About It - Duration: 4:56.

Rev up your engines, mike row asks scotty what do you think of

the new toyota supra coming out, ok they've been talking about it for ages and now their

actually going to come and sell them, I guess their having an auction for the first one

to make a bunch of money to help people so that's a cool idea,

now here's the thing, it's going to be a niche car it's going to be pretty expensive, it's

got a BMW straight 6 cylinder engine and a bmw zf 8 speed automatic transmission, so

it seems to me like it's more a BMW than a toyota, you know toyota has done that with

their other sports car that's pretty much a subaru, toyota's always been a company that

was never that into pure sports cars, back in the 60's they made a toyota and it was

pretty much, had a yamaha engine in it, when they did the toyota celica in the early 2000's

they had a yamaha designed engine in it, it's kind of weird that their always making their

sports cars with other companies, I guess they don't want to do the research and design,

that said it will probably be really fun to drive around I mean the BMW stuff is zippy

to run around but it's going to be kind of a niche car, it doesn't look like it's going

to be anything like the original supra that they sold a whole bunch of them, toyota made

all the stuff themselves, it's going to be a rear wheel drive 6 cylinder engine, I hope

one of my customers buys one so I can try it out and drive it around but it's probably

more of a BMW than anything else, pacheco says scotty I got a 2000 ford explorer

with 185,000 miles and it won't pass emissions, the mechanic said it needs a new alternator

and a catalytic converter is it worth fixing should I look for another SUV, it depends

what he's going to charge you and what really needs doing, is it needs an alternator that's

no big deal you can do it yourself they just bolt on and off, I've got videos on that,

replacing an alternator on your car scotty type that and youtube you'll see my video,

you'll see how easy it is to do, the catalytic converter, if it runs good enough, look at

fixing a car with a bad catalytic converter, you can put some cleaner in the gas tank and

drive it and a lot of times that will allow it when you reset the computer to pass the

emissions test, you might try that first, I wouldn't put a whole bunch of money into

it with that kind of mileage on it, if the guy is going to charge you thousands of dollars

or something I'd say forget it, but you can put an alternator on yourself or price around

it's not that hard of a job, and then try cleaning the car rather than replacing it,

cuz if it runs ok cats being inefficient the cleaner will a lot of times fix it for quite

some time, 250 says I got an old Chrysler Daytona, it

hasn't been started in 14 years, can I take it to your shop and fix it up and should I

spend money re-wiring her for the sake of it, I wouldn't, let's face it the chrysler

dodge daytonas they really weren't collectors items or anything, and it would be so much

work to get that thing up and in decent shape, it's not worth it, you'll never see the money

back, I mean if it was your grandfathers car or something and your emotionally involved

and you want to get it running and you can do it yourself, give it a try but I personally

wouldn't, it wasn't like their worth something that was really great that you'd want to bring

back like you know an old classic Mercedes from the 60's or you know a 60's mustang,

the daytonas were really never worth anything, the fattest buffalo in the west, air vs electric

impact wrenches, ok I've been an air impact wrench guy my whole life, since I was a kid

at my father's gas station, we had a big compressor, you can't beat the air tools for power, that's

why theirs air tools out there, but and this is a big but, recently they've been making

electric power tools a lot better, their higher voltage and the higher voltage they are the

more power that their going to put out, I've seen some that were 36 volts, I've talked

to other mechanics and some of them that do a lot of mobile work, they swear buy them,

they'll buy, and they don't buy a cheap one they'll buy one that's $300-400, and they'll

have 2 or 3 big battery packs with them charged up and they swear by them saying that they

can take the tires and everything off with no problems at all, just realize when you

use electric stuff, they only got a limited amount of power to get big stuff off before

they start running out, where an air compressor, all it does is use the air and then when the

air pressure gets lower it pumps it back up again and it's plugged into the wall, so if

your a traveling guy you could have an air compressor that's got a gasoline motor, you

start the gasoline motor and then that runs the compressor pretty much unlimited supply

there you don't have to worry about running out of power,

so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos, remember to ring

that bell!

Cyberconflict: Why the Worst Is Yet to Come | NYT News - Duration: 4:20.

Cyberconflict right now, at this very moment,

is like this airplane.

It was the first military airplane that was ever built —

back in 1909.

But in just a few decades,

planes would be capable of destroying entire cities.

Right, so when we talk about cyberweapons,

we're still basically in 1909.

"That's why you have to have some humility about what's

going to happen in the world of cyberconflict."

David, here, is a national security correspondent

for The Times,

and he's written a book about cyberconflict.

It seems like we're hearing more and more —

"One of the worst cyberattacks ever."

— about state-sponsored cyberattacks.

"Occasionally, there are going to be breaches like this."

"And this weapon will not be put back into the box."

"We have more to lose than any other nation on earth."

So, we really wanted to find out just how bad things are.

And how bad they could get.

Should we be afraid?

"Yes, you should be afraid, but not for the reason

you think —

not because somebody is going to come in and turn off

all the power between Boston and Washington.

You should be worried about the far more subtle uses

of cyber."

For example, not an overt attack on U.S. troops,

but instead, maybe hacking into military health records

and switching around people's blood types.

It still causes havoc.

"Think terrorism —"

"About a third of the building has been blown away."

"— instead of full-scale war."

"Why do you call it the perfect weapon?"

"Because it's deniable.

If you can't figure out right away where

the attack's coming from, you can't really retaliate."

Plus, you can fine-tune the strength of cyberattacks.

You can make them just strong enough to do real damage,

but not so strong that they trigger a military response.

"It's cheap compared to, say, nuclear weapons.

You just need some twenty-somethings who

are good at programming, a little bit of stolen code

and maybe some Red Bull just to keep them awake

during the night."

That's why cyberweapons have only just begun to spread.

"And cyber is the perfect weapon for a country

that's broke."

"And we can confirm that North Korea

engaged in this attack."

Take that time North Korea hacked into Sony —

"Because of a satirical movie starring

Seth Rogen and James Flacco."

What if they didn't have cyberweapons?

"Maybe they would have landed some commandos at Long Beach,

called an Uber, stuck some dynamite underneath the

Sony computer center and run like hell."

So really, North Korea's only option

was to use cyberweapons.

But it wouldn't be so easy for the U.S.

to hit North Korea's cybernetworks.

"They have fewer IP addresses — Internet Protocol addresses —

in North Korea, than you have on any given

block of New York City."

Still, we wanted to know who's the best at cyberconflict.

"Russia, China, Iran, they use it regularly

to advance their political agendas.

The Russians to disrupt, the Chinese frequently

to steal information, the Iranians to show that they

can reach the United States."

"How good or bad is the U.S. at this stuff?"

"Among the very best at cyberoffense.

The problem is that while we're good at offense,

we're the most vulnerable in the defensive world

because we've got so many networks that

form such a big target.

The United States has 6,200 cybersoldiers."

"Are these people sitting in military fatigues

behind a computer?"

"They are sitting in military fatigues behind a computer.

But the Russian hackers, or the Chinese hackers,

may not be in uniform.

They may be in blue jeans.

They are probably sitting at the beach

somewhere — someplace that's got a really good

internet connection."

All this cyberconflict really kicked off in 2008.

Right, that's when the U.S. and Israel attacked

Iranian nuclear facilities.

"It was the most sophisticated use of cyber

by one state against another, and it opened up

the Pandora's box."

And remember —

it's still only the beginning.

"We haven't seen a full-blown war,

and we don't know what one looks like."

"What's the most challenging part

about covering this beat?"

"The hardest part about covering the state use of cyber,

is the enormous secrecy

that the U.S. government wraps around it.

But we've hit the point where the secrecy has actually

begun to impede our ability to deter attacks.

Because others don't understand

what we can do to them, and what

we're willing to do to them.

In other words, we're not setting any

red lines out there."

I tend to esteem motion pictures more for their aesthetic value than for their use value but sometimes there are exceptions. Through scrupulous and heightened simulations of terrifying reality, last years First Man reminded me why I never even entertained the notion of becoming an astronaut.

Taking the opposite tack with an irrational but not altogether implausible conceit, Escape Room reminds me why Ill never engage in the in which you allow yourself to be trapped in a room and puzzle solve your way out of it.

The conceit is that this movies game masters absolutely intend to kill the six invitees who at first find themselves in a waiting area that turns into a people cooking oven. The players, mostly adult but still Breakfast Club ish, include a female war veteran, an overachieving but friendless collegian, a dirtbag grocery stock boy and a too pragmatic finance guy.

The screenwriters Bragi F. Schut and Maria Melnik and the director Adam Robitel steer this not all that intriguing crew through a series of challenges, in spaces that the production designer Edward Thomas clearly enjoyed putting together. The upside down bar is particularly gnarly, especially once the ceiling panels start dropping out. The puzzles arent constructed in a way that gives the viewers any sort of whack at them; we merely watch as the characters solve or dont solve them, then start dying for real. There are intimations of Tales From the Crypt, Final Destination, The Game, and other older, better films here; this movie never catches a fire like any of those did, and even its twist coda feels dreary and pro forma. But the movie is keeping me even further away from real life escape rooms than I already had been.

Surviving R. Kelly Documentary Reviews Decades of Sex Abuse Accusations The New York Times - Duration: 4:22.

Surviving R. Kelly Documentary Reviews Decades of Sex Abuse Accusations The New York Times

For more than two decades, the R B singer Robert Kelly, who performs as R. Kelly, has faced accusations of sexual misconduct and abuse.

This week, a six part documentary on Lifetime is taking an expansive look at the allegations against Mr. Kelly, a chart topping artist whose history has invited extra scrutiny in recent years.

The series, , includes testimony from several women accusing the singer of abuse, as well as commentary from Mr. Kellys critics, including the founder of the MeToo movement, Tarana Burke, and the singer John Legend.

The first two episodes, which were broadcast Thursday night, looked at the long history of allegations against Mr. Kelly. In the episodes, women described being controlled or abused by him, often when they were teenagers.

Mr. Kelly has continuously denied the allegations against him.

The documentary has become the subject of widespread attention and fierce debate on social media, with many expressing gratitude to the women who continue to tell their stories.

I wish that he would experience a kind of social death, and that people who still vociferously declare him innocent — or their favorite artist, or worthy of having his work separated from who he is — that they are denied that, said dream hampton, an executive producer of the documentary.

The six parts of the series were scheduled over three days of broadcast, from Thursday through Saturday. The third and fourth episodes focus on Mr. Kellys 2008 child pornography trial. The fifth and sixth episodes examine more recent allegations and follow parents who were trying to free their daughters from Mr. Kellys influence, Ms. hampton said.

While some fans of Mr. Kelly still defend him, many critics say that he has escaped the consequences of his actions for far too long.

No one cared because we were black girls, the writer Mikki Kendall said in the documentary.

Ms. hampton agreed that race was an integral part of this story. She added that black boys and girls in the United States are often perceived as older than they are, and referenced , a 12 year old boy who was shot and killed by a police officer in Cleveland in 2014.

We know black boys are perceived to be older than they are by police, and we absolutely do an equivalent thing to black girls, Ms. hampton said in an interview Friday. We perceive them to be more sexual at an early age. We perceive them to be older. And that is rooted — there is no other way to say it, and its not hyperbole to say — its absolutely rooted in this countrys history of slavery, which has gone on longer than it hasnt.

Mr. Kelly was still on Friday evening. The label did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday, and a representative for Sony Music, which oversees RCA Records, declined to comment. Mr. Kellys management also declined to comment.

it would vigorously resist this attempted public lynching of a black man who has made extraordinary contributions to our culture. Mr. Kelly is not currently facing criminal charges.

In 1994, when Mr. Kelly was 27, he married Aaliyah Haughton, who was 15 but was listed as 18 on a wedding certificate, The marriage was annulled in 1995. Ms. Haughton, who was a popular singer in her own right, in 2001.

Mr. Kelly was accused of having sex with a teenager in a lawsuit in 1996, and again in 2001. Both lawsuits were settled, but the music critic Jim DeRogatis, who reported on them, .

In 2002, a video that appeared to show Mr. Kelly having sex with a teenage girl and urinating in her mouth was sent to Mr. DeRogatis at , which reported that the footage was being investigated by the Chicago police.

Later that year, Mr. Kelly was indicted by a grand jury in Chicago for child pornography. He pleaded not guilty, and for more than five years his case did not make it to trial. During that time he released albums including Chocolate Factory, which contained the chart topping song Ignition Remix .

Arguments in the 2008 trial centered on whether the man shown in the video was indeed Mr. Kelly, and whether the girls identity or her age could be verified. The jury decided that the girl, who did not testify, could not be identified, and Mr. Kelly was found not guilty.

In 2017, reported on allegations that the singer was controlling several young women by taking away their phones and limiting contact with their families. That same year, a campaign of protests, in person and on social media under the hashtag MuteRKelly, began to pick up steam. In 2018, Spotify announced that it would from its official playlists, though his music would remain on the streaming platform.

A screening of the Lifetime documentary in Manhattan last month was called off after anonymous threats were called in to the venue, .

The documentarys producers include Ms. hampton, Tamra Simmons, Brie Miranda Bryant, Joel Karsberg and Jesse Daniels, according to Lifetime.

Supporters of the documentary, including and the columnist , have pointed people to organizations like , a Chicago based nonprofit working to end violence against girls and women; and , a nonprofit that has for viewers of the documentary, including those who are survivors of sexual assault.

Tropical Storm Pabuk Strikes Thailands Resort Islands The New York Times - Duration: 2:19.

Tropical Storm Pabuk Strikes Thailands Resort Islands The New York Times

By The Associated Press

BANGKOK — Rain, winds and surging seawater knocked down trees and flooded roads on Friday, as Tropical Storm Pabuk made landfall in southern Thailand.

One person was reported dead and another missing after a fishing boat with a crew of six capsized in strong winds, but there were no reports of major damage by nightfall. The first tropical storm to make landfall in Thailand in three decades appeared to cause far less destruction than had been feared.

Torrential rain was expected in a dozen provinces in southern Thailand, including Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani — which includes the popular resort islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Airports were closed, and flights and ferry services were canceled for safety reasons.

The Meteorological Department said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 47 miles per hour when it hit land shortly after noon on Friday. Officials said the storm was losing speed as it moved inland, but warned that strong winds, storm surges and flash floods were still a danger. They advised all ships to stay ashore through Saturday.

Joe Kieta, an American visiting the island of Koh Samui, said that the rain had stopped there by Friday evening. It seems like the worst is past us, he said.

Mr. Kieta said in an email that roads on the island had light debris, and that his hotel had closed its beach area and discouraged guests from going out.

Before the storm, the National Disaster Warning Center urged people to head for higher ground, including in Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. More than 6,100 people were evacuated in four provinces as the storm approached, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

Evacuation efforts were particularly intense in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, south of Bangkok. Officials drove riving trucks through flooded streets with downed power lines urging people to leave.

You cannot stay here. Its too dangerous, they repeated from loudspeakers.

The Thai Navy said its only aircraft carrier, the HTMS Chakri Naruebet, was on standby and prepared to sail if needed for relief efforts.

There had been fears that the storm would be the worst to hit Thailand since 1989, when Typhoon Gay killed more than 400 people.

Meet the new Manager of Animal Protection and Control and Code Enforcement - Duration: 12:49.

Hello, I'm Jim Demmon with Clark

County Close Up.

Thank you so

much for meeting with us.

Thank you for having me.

Susan, you started in your

position as manager of both Code

Enforcement and Animal

Protection Control in September.

What was your previous

background.

I have over 20 years of

experience in public service.

Most recently I worked for the

Clark County Fire Marshal's

Office as a Senior Deputy Fire

Marshal and I was in that

position for around 13 years.

So

I'm thrilled to have a new

challenge still within Clark

County and still serving our

citizens.

OK.

Earlier this summer there

were some unexpected temporary

service reductions for both code

enforcement and animal control.

Are service levels fully

restored?

Not quite.

I do want to start

out by thanking and recognizing

the existing staff for all their

hard work over the summer and

the fall, as well as the

community members that stepped

up during those times and really

helped kind of keep things

afloat.

They did an amazing,

amazing job.

We are still down a

little bit so I have one officer

in each of those two offices to

hire still.

Do you anticipate fairly soon

giving those positions filled?

I anticipate having those

positions filled by the end of

January.

OK, all right.

So let's start

first with code enforcement,

what is the role of code

enforcement?

Yes, our code enforcement

division is in charge of

responding to concerns about

code enforcement issues related

to zoning, related to nuisances

in neighborhoods and in

commercial areas, and to

building code violations in some

cases, as well as land use.

OK.

About how many officers you

have to patrol.

We currently have one officer

and one lead officer that are

covering the whole county.

And

like I mentioned before we still

have one vacancy that we need to

fill.

And when you've saying the whole

county, are you talking just

unincorporated Clark County, not

the cities?

Correct.

Vancouver and the small

cities enforce their own

jurisdictions.

OK now let's switch to animal

control.

What's the role of

animal control?

Animal control is responding to

concerns and complaints about

animal related issues.

That

would include neglecting cruelty

cases, that would include

nuisances such as barking dogs

which is very common, as well as

animals running at large,

commonly known as strays.

We

pick up dead animals and in some

circumstances as well.

So pretty much anything domestic

animal related we will respond

to.

And do you serve the entire

county beyond just

unincorporated Clark County?

Yes we do on the animal

protection and control side we

do serve the city of Vancouver

as well as the town of Yacolt.

And we are also speaking with

the Cowlitz Tribe about forming

a partnership with them to

provide services at their casino

site up the road.

And how many officers cover

Clark County?

So we currently have three

certified officers and one

trainee on staff, and we have

that one officer position yet to

fill.

Okay, so with enforcement, could

you just give us a few examples

of the kind of complaints that

you deal with?

Certainly, this time of year

when the leaves are off the

trees often properties are a

little more visible to neighbors

than they were the rest of the

year and so we get a uptick in

the types of complaints dealing

with property nuisances, such as

junk or debris in accumulations

or an operable vehicles.

People

living in Rvs that type of

thing.

So, if I noticed something in my

neighborhood, I live in

unincorporated Clark County,

what are some initial steps I

should take?

We would always recommend that

you start with having a

conversation directly with your

neighbor, with the property

owner.

Oftentimes you can also

speak with a homeowner's

association if you have one and

they can offer some remedies in

some cases if there's violations

of their CC&Rs as well.

If that doesn't yield results

then they are welcome to call

code enforcement or to go on our

website.

The best way to file a

complaint with us is to use our

online form.

And we'll show those contact

information at the end of the

interview.

OK so now let's turn

to animals.

First, why is it

important to license your pet?

Well the license fees that we

collect are a significant

revenue stream for our program.

It supports our investigations

of cruelty and neglect, as well

as our other services to the

community, such as low cost spay

and neutering, as well as

sheltering at the shelter out

there at The Humane Society.

And then of course if you have

an animal potentially they could

get out, get lost.

So if an

animal has a license tag it is

likely to be reunited with its

family much faster than if it is

not.

In the wintertime what are some

common complaints that you

receive regarding animals.

In the winter time on the

animal's side, the nuisance

noise complaints tend to kind of

fall off and unfortunately we

start seeing a lot more of the

neglect and cruelty cases.

Often

we see pets or domestic animals

or livestock that are not given

adequate food, water or shelter

from the elements.

Obviously those kind of

complaints are responses to

being much quicker, so how are

those complaint calls handled?

Sure, we do have a dispatcher

that works Monday through Friday

during the day.

She does take

most of our online and telephone

complaints.

We have a priority

system basically.

For the most

urgent calls where there's

imminent threat to an animal or

persons life or property those

are red coded calls and those

are deemed for a immediate

response.

The next level priority are the

blue calls.

Those are the public

service calls and requests that

are not emergent in nature but

still need to be addressed

within the next several hours.

And then lastly the green

priority calls are the general

nuisance calls.

We get a lot of

those and just based on our

staffing resources we have to

address those kind of as we can.

This fall the road number of

raccoons and cats apparently

poisoned in Vancouver.

Have

these posionings stopped?

Well I can say that since we did

the news feature and got

information about that out to

the public, those calls have

dramatically decreased.

So

that's great, great news.

We

have not received, to my

knowledge, any more reports of

dead raccoons in Fir Crest Park.

We do still occasionally get

calls where we have cats that

appear to be suffering from from

poisoning.

We have not been able

to prove that anyone was

intentionally poisoning animals.

But it is a good reminder again

for folks that it is illegal to

put out poison bait of any kind

in an area that is accessible to

domestic pets.

OK.

Winter can be especially

tough on pets as we talked

about.

What are some extra steps

that pet owners should take to

keep their animals safe for

wintertime?

So I looked into this

specifically as we were coming

into this season, and also the

other inquiries from the media

about this, based on what

veterinarians will tell us that

despite the fur that a lot of

animals have they're still not

really any more suited for cold

weather than we are.

You know we've we've raised them

and domesticated them to a point

where they're used to being

inside and that's what they can

deal with.

They are not

necessarily better suited to

deal with cold weather than we

are, so veterinarians will

recommend that animals are kept

indoors.

Pets are kept indoors

except for the walks and

exercise that are necessary.

Also, if for some reason the pet

has to be kept outdoors.

The

owner is responsible for

providing adequate freshwater,

food to maintain a healthy body

weight, as well as shelter from

the elements, including wind,

rain, snow, and that would

include dry bedding.

All right, are there community

resources available for horse

hardship cases?

There are and I want to talk

about that specifically because

in our community there is an

estimated 30,000 horses in the

county here.

Thirty thousand?

Yes.

Wow!

Yes.

We are a big horse loving

community and fortunately there

is a large dedicated community

of horse owners here.

And Clark

County Animal Protection and

control in conjunction with the

Clark County Executive Horse

Council does have a program

called Ripley's Horse Aid.

And

that is designed to prevent

horse neglect.

What we do is we invite any

horse owner that is suffering a

hardship, and for whatever

reason is not able to adequately

care for their horse or horses,

to please contact our office at

animal protection and control.

We will help them get the food,

medical services, other help

that they need to prevent

neglect from ever occurring or

comes to the point where they

would need finding homes for

their horses, re-homing them,

then the Executive Council also

has an adopt-a-horse program

that we can connect folks with.

So there's no reason for horses

to go hungry or to suffer in

Clark County.

The resources are

there to address that.

OK.

And if you notice a horse in

your community that might have

issues you could share that

information with the owner.

But

if you have concerns and are

being addressed maybe

contact...?

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

You're

always welcome to contact

somebody directly.

Talk to them

about the help that might be

available or what your concerns

are, and then refer them to us.

If it gets to a point where

that's not working or you still

have concerns about the

well-being of the animals do not

hesitate to contact animal

protection and control.

OK so now let's give the

information.

If people want more

information about Code

Enforcement or Animal Protection

and Control they can check the

website which will show

clark.wa.gov/community-development

and then from there they can get

to your services, both Code

Enforcement and Animal

Protection and Control.

Okay then let's give the

numbers, for Clark County Code

Enforcement the number is

564.397.2408.

Correct and that is for filing

concerns or complaints.

For Code

Enforcement.

Then for Clark County Animal

Protection and Control there's

two numbers.

Licensing, if you

want to get a license I'm

assuming.

564.397.2489.

Correct and a reminder that cats

and dogs are required to be

licensed in Clark County and the

City of Vancouver.

Okay and again all those license

fees not only protect your

animals but protects all the

animals in Clark County.

Absolutely.

OK.

And then the final number

for concerns 564.397.2488.

That's it.

Okay, well thank you very much

for meeting with us.

You're

dealing with two major issues so

really appreciate it and Happy

Holidays.

Thank you, same to you.

Cathy Olig Thoughts on the New Year - Duration: 1:11.

Hey everybody thought I'd get behind from just my keyboard and take a quick video.

So reflecting on 2018 - it was an awesome year I've met a lot of goals in

Appeal Marketing and I feel blessed my family is doing well. My kids are growing like weeds.

They're seven and nine now, but 2018 was awesome.

I'm excited for 2019 and what that holds. I wanted to quick share a resolution

that I have for this year and that is to be more present

One piece of that is my use of technology, and I think I'm just using my smartphone

as a filler and it's not really helping me be more productive and to be more

connected with people in face-to-face interactions and just time with my

family, so my goal is to be more present and to kind of just be more sensitive to

how often I'm picking up my phone or responding to notifications.

Let me what you think about that if you're trying to do that too or what you're

looking to accomplish in 2019. Thanks everybody hope you're doing well.

Have an awesome day! Bye!
