Alrighty, we are back baby here at All Prophecy Fulfilled where we are
attempting to define the last days and we are attempting to do that biblically
that is that means we have been going through the entirety of the Old
Testament looking at the prophets and getting their perspective on things so
the last day biblically defined. And hey we have arrived!
we have arrived well we've arrived at the New Testament anyway and you're
thinking yeah finally it's about time it's been like 40 lessons so you know
just by way of reminder I'm kind of curious here if you have actually stuck
with this from the very beginning I don't know how many of you are out there
we established what I what I called common ground at the very beginning that
is three points of agreement and I think pretty much most of us or all of us you
know can agree upon if we're a little bit familiar with our Bible or maybe
you've grown up in church or something like that and I'm wondering do you
remember what those three points of agreement are what was our common ground
that we started from well let me remind you number one the Bible alone defines
its own terms number two the Bible teaches a coming
and that coming was after that would it would be after the death burial
resurrection and ascension of Jesus and it was future to his disciples so we can
call that a return being called a second coming I don't really care what you want
to call it I'm not gonna quibble with you on that one but the Bible teaches
that there was a coming that was future to them number three the Bible teaches
that this coming would occur in the last days now those are our three points of
agreement I guess you could say and that really was our launching pad and from
there I tell you what this study really has been a long road through the story a
story told and guided by the long line of Israel's prophets it's all about the
prophets and man I tell you what the prophets have been just amazed
consistent if nothing else they are consistent and look if you're convinced
still at this point that Jesus is gonna return in our future
you know maybe in a physical body or whatever and he's gonna basically bring
this world this planet to a close then this is something I think that you
really need to consider up to this point from Genesis all the way to Malachi
there has not been one single mention of an end of the world of an end of the
planet earth or of the end of the the physical cosmos okay no look I'm not
saying that can't happen or that won't happen whatever I'm just saying
according to this story we cannot contextually tie an end to
Planet Earth or ever you know the world to that the prophets we can't
contextually to tie that to anything the prophets have talked about and I think
yeah that is so powerful and that's a powerful point because the prophets
actually do describe many many many ins many you know latter days we're looking
at Kate's and we're looking at a curries and you know you got the end of this
people or you've got the latter days of that nation
you know before another nation comes in and kind of brings their world to an end
so there's a lot of ends in scripture but never an end of planet Earth and I
think that's a little bit revealing so here's the truth of it I think from the
beginning and then throughout all these various ends within Israel story as they
kind of travel down I would say their their road to redemption under law the
prophets they're the prophets man they've just always I mean always
they're dealing with immediate you know historical contextual situations at
their time but I tell you what they are always looking down that road through
their prophetic lenses if you were there kind of narrowing in it seems always
there's always one particular end that seems to really come into focus a lot
and that would be the end of their nation it would be the end
they're people Old Covenant Israel and with that end of course you've got the
you've got salvation and redemption you got the end of life under the law and
you know what this really shouldn't catch us off guard it shouldn't take us
by surprise because we're familiar with Deuteronomy I've talked about that ad
nauseam blad right Deuteronomy Deuteronomy Deuteronomy way back at the
beginning of their journey you know Moses actually kind of told their story
ahead of time he kind of gave this 30,000 foot view if you will of their
hid histories like hey here's what's gonna happen to you you got blessings
you've got cursings all the way to your latter end Israel Deuteronomy 32 so what
I'm saying here folks really is that we see a lot of ends and a lot of ladders
mentioned we do but just that one end just seems to keep rearing its head and
and that that end is not the end of planet Earth that's what I'm saying it's
not it's not the physical cosmos it's the end of Israel and their covenant
world under law that's that's always right there in perspective okay and the
prophets have been a hundred percent consistent with this so here we are the
new testament and it's really been all about the prophets the prophets the
prophets of the prophets and that's all i seem to talk about and you're probably
thinking take your thinking okay great he's into the New Testament now so you
know maybe we can just kind of put these pesky prophets off to the side for a
while because it's kind of like a news story right no no no no no no no it's
not
it's the same story and you know that because I've said that and I think you
know what anyway it's the same story it's just the tail end of it same people
Israel and it's you know their prophets in fact you know what who's the first
prophet that we see well we see John the Baptist right he is a prophet of and to
Israel okay and I did a little search hear the word prophets or prophets all
by itself that's missions like almost a hundred times it's like 90
sometimes in the New Testament itself the term together the prophets that's
mentioned 54 times in the New Testament so let me just give you some examples
here this is probably overkill but I just want you to listen to this and just
get a feel of flavor an idea of the importance the relevance in the emphasis
on prophets not in just in the Old Testament but what we're gonna see in
the New Testament okay watch this Matthew 5:17 do not think that I came to
destroy the law or the prophets I did not come to destroy but to fulfill
Matthew 7:12 therefore whatever you want me to did you do also to them for this
is the law and the prophets 22:40 of these two Commandments hang all
the law and the prophets Luke 18:31 then he took the twelve aside and said to
them behold we are going to Jerusalem and all things that are written by the
prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished Luke 24 25 and he said
to them o foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all the prophets have
spoken Luke 24 27 and beginning at Moses hey there's Moses and all the prophets
he expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself
Luke 22:44 then he said to them these are the words which I spoke to you while
I was still with you that all things must be fulfilled which were written in
the law of Moses and the prophets and psalms concerning me about John 1:45
philip found nathanael and said to him hey Nathaniel we have found him of whom
Moses and in the law and also the prophets wrote Jesus of Nazareth the son
of Joseph how about acts 324 yes and all the
prophets from Samuel and those who follow as many as have spoken have also
foretold these days these days right here next
10:43 to him all the prophets witness acts 24:14 but i confess to you that
according to the way which they call a sect so i worship the god of my fathers
believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets you're
getting the picture I should I stop now I don't want to him to keep going
therefore having you up tempt him from God to this day I stand witnessing both
to small and great saying no other things that those which the prophets and
who and Moses said would come how about this one Hebrews 1:1 God who at various
times and in various ways spoke in times past to the father's by the prophets who
are the father's they were the fathers of Israel God spoke to Israel through
the prophets the fathers of Israel whom so in the New Testament is he speaking
to who he's still speaking to the fathers of this he's still speaking to
Israel through the prophets John the Baptist was a a prophet to Israel ok ok
enough already man what a massive emphasis on the
prophets I mean do you see I hope you do I think you do it's impossible to
accurately or biblically define the last days without the prophets and I mean
just the the authority that that the New Testament writers give the prophets it's
right smack in your face so again here we are we have to we have to read this
story as if it's a continuation of this sort story and not only that but it's
nearing the end of the story that is so important because I think we're we have
been like programmed to think ok New Testament starting up a new thing here
let's you know let's let's forget what's back there and let's just kind of push
forward and know that's not the right perspective that's
not the right angle to take so this is Israel story we have arrived in the last
days now let me give you a little analogy here this is something that I I
thought of and I think I've said it before but maybe it makes sense maybe it
doesn't but Luke 16:16 the law and the prophets were until John well what then
since that time the kingdom of God has been preached and everyone is pressing
into it hmm okay no just you ever seen one of
them them bottles that has like a ship in it you know you're thinking well
how's that ships gonna get out well maybe you don't think that okay
visualize not world peace visualize a big bottle like a beer bottle and it's a
you know in the East a long necked bottle so at the very end it bottlenecks
right so obviously a bottle is gonna bottleneck okay so right here this you
know visualize Moses and Deuteronomy and the story is moving along that way and
you've got Moses and Deuteronomy and you've got you know like judges and
you've got King the Kings and the prophets and all the way until John all
the way until you hit that bottleneck in that bottleneck is the last day
everything is heading towards that conversion boom right there and that is
when everything would boom the the last days everything would come in to
fulfillment and everything was pressing into the kingdom of God that was the
goal look when you open up your Bible to Matthew you know what you're opening
your opening up to that bottleneck everything those are the last days does
that help or is that stupid don't answer that
it's about the prophets that's what I'm trying to say okay here's what I want to
do I just want to remind you of like three things three big
picture findings I think that we've uncovered some things that are kind of
what I would consider interpretive takeaways you know for the last 40
lessons and I really just want to lay that kind of a foundation as we enter
into the new testament so this is kind of like an intro into the New Testament
so I'm going to give you three points these three points I think are gonna
serve as interpretive tools going forward as we kind of meander through
the New Testament okay so in other words over the last 40 lessons if you've been
paying attention what are we standing on what do we know what have we seen what
are the things that really stick out here how can we summarize this what are
the things that we need to have right now kind of stored in your mind quickly
on that shelf that we can easily easily take from for instant access well here
are the things that I've seen and I've boiled it down I think to three things
here they are number one the authority of the prophets number two the language
of the prophets in number three themes of the prophets so those are the three
things that I'm gonna talk about real briefly but I want you to hang on to
those right now going forward because you're gonna need them so authority of
the prophets I've already talked about that a little bit this is kind of a
no-brainer I think by now but the reason I mention it is because it's really
gonna be important going forward because the prophets are quoted they're cited
they're alluded to hundreds of times in the New Testament okay
the New Testament writers they were constantly drawing on the the prophets
authority really to reiterate or to demonstrate or to prove the case they
were making I like to call Old Testament citations Old Testament hyperlinks you
know like on the computer there's a hyperlink and I like to do that because
I tell you what every time we see a citation it's like a hyperlink that we
need to click on and we need it's gonna take us to another place it's gonna take
as to the profit and it's gonna help us
understand what the new testament writer is actually talking about so I think by
citing the Prophet the New Testament writer I think he's attributing weight
and authority to that prophet and the prophets writing and I think he's saying
hey remember what so-and-so said well he's agreeing with me or actually I'm
agreeing with him or this is what he was saying or you know what he said is
confirming what I'm telling you and so that's what we have to to really really
really focus and concentrate on the authority of the prophets so what the
New Testament writers say about what the Old Testament writers say that too
becomes authoritative that becomes we have to take the new what the New
Testament writers say at their word when they're deciphering and deciding and
interpreting what the Old Testament prophets say so we are going to click on
a lot of Old Testament hyperlinks in the New Testament so remember the authority
of the prophets number two the language of the prophets and I've talked about
this a lot but you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna talk about it again so fast
forward if you need to the prophets use metaphor they used allegory they use
hyperbole they painted pictures with their words I like to say that they
painted pictures with their words animals representing people descriptions
of judgments you know they were painted with wild cataclysmic hyperbolic
language for example and we had really important like for this study for
example we're talking about the coming of Lord right with the coming of Jesus
there was a coming future okay well then what kind of language did they use to
describe a coming of the Lord if that's what we're going to be looking at in the
New Testament well we have to be aware of and I think consistent of the
language of the prophets in the Old Testament because as you know the Lord
came down many times in the Old Testament right there were numerous days
of the Lord's in the Old Testament where God came down riding a cloud and and
you know the these comings were were the profits
you know the vivid descriptions that they that they painted they were really
worth historical judgments you know on various nations that came through other
nations so every single one of these comings of God came through the means of
a foreign nation but we have to take note of how the the prophets described
those what was their language and again probably old hat but let me give you an
example describing a day of the Lord coming of the Lord against Babylon via
the metes Isaiah 13 6 9 and 10 well for the daily Lords at hand it will come as
destruction from the Almighty behold that there the Lord comes cruel with
both anger and wrath and fierce anger to lay the land desolate for the stars of
heaven and their constellations will not give their light the Sun will be
darkened and it's going forth and a moon will not cause its light to shine so
you've got stars falling from heaven you got the Sun being darkened you got the
moon not shiny not giving this light okay have you heard anything like that
in the New Testament well yeah I think you have and we're gonna cover that and
you know we're gonna pay attention to that and we're gonna ask questions about
that and we're gonna be honest about that we're not just going to use
Scripture we're actually going to use logic and common sense we're gonna think
about things remember the story line of Saul's persecution of David well I bet
you probably do do you remember how how David's you know prevailing over his
enemy how that was described you probably do second sound you're 22 8
through 14 ish listen to this the earth shook and trembled the foundations of
the earth quake and were shaken because he was angry smoke went up from his
nostrils and devouring fire from his mouth coals were kindled bad he bowed
the heavens also and came down with darkness under his feet
he rode a cherub and he flew he had what else here he made darkness canopies
around him dark waters of thick clouds of the skies the Lord thundered from
heaven kind of sounds like a shout he thundered from heaven and the most high
uttered his voice well that's interesting okay so look what I'm saying
is this is the language of the prophets you know that I know that but we have to
keep this on the front shelf of our minds when we read the New Testament and
again I'm gonna remind you about this when we run across various passages
where Jesus used this exact kind of leg language and we're gonna ask ourselves
logical reasonable audience relevant questions like wait a minute how would
the first century Jewish audience how would they take this how would they
understand it you know Jesus being a prophet himself wouldn't he use the same
kind of prophetic language of the prophets before him use well yeah I
think so we'll take a look at John 5 I think that's a just a very interesting
telling passage that's really largely ignored where Jesus talks about you know
how the father had given judgment into his hands and how he he could do nothing
but what he sees his father do you know and he's you know talking about his
coming well isn't he going to come just like his father had to come many times
before him well yeah I think so and we'll talk about that so language of the
prophets I mean it's not just about coming it's about everything how's the
New Jerusalem described how is the heaven and earth described how is
salvation' described how is this described how what language did the
prophets use and we're just going to carry that on through the New Testament
number three the themes of the prophets lo the story of Israel's Redemption is
just saturated with themes you probably remember maybe it's
embedded in your head because it's embedded in mine because that's all i
dentist talk about themes themes themes themes Old Testament prophetic last-day
themes and they're just everywhere life and death and
day and night light and darkness the remnant the elect the new temple or a
messianic temple a new covenant a new wedding marriage or you know the
marriage feast the wedding banquet I guess resurrection the land the New
Jerusalem blessings and curses and in judgment and mountain of the Lord which
is what Mount Zion - pouring out of the Holy Spirit of the the gathering I'm
sorry the scattering and then the gathering and then you know this the the
last days I mean there's a theme right there but the truth is actually I
shouldn't say the last days because these are last day themes all of these
every single one of these themes they would culminate they would come to
fruition and be fulfilled in Israel's last days hence last days theme so these
themes are exactly what we see if we're careful to know what time period we're
looking at in our New Testaments we will see these themes come to fruition and
when we do man there's a lot of aha moments and so that's really what I want
to talk about so themes of the prophets so you know here's really what I want to
do but I don't have time to do it now but it's really really important because
you know if you've been with me here for any period of time you know how much I
refer to Old Testament prophetic last names themes I just think they're
everywhere and I think this is my opinion I think they're one of the most
helpful lenses to look through and so so much in fact what I want to do is I want
to just give a little more explanation on this number three themes of the
prophets and I want to give an example and I want to give a demonstration of
exactly what I mean by how all these things come to fruition in the New
Testament and so that's going to take like 30 minutes or so so I know I know
you want me just to kind of hurry up and move
forward in the New Testament but I feel like I just I want to do this one little
example so here's what I'm gonna do I want to demonstrate I'm gonna take one
theme and I'm gonna take for example I'm gonna take what's actually two things
but it's two and one it's the scattering in the gathering that is huge that's a
huge Old Testament theme or a motif whatever you want to call it that begins
way back you way back here and it develops all through the story and it
comes to a head and I'm positive I know that it comes to a head in the New
Testament and I want you to see how that works so I am gonna demonstrate how that
works and so I'm gonna basically kind of do a little exercise but I'm gonna do
that next lesson I just want to I just wanted to get a lesson out there let you
know that I'm still here and we are going to press forward so I'm gonna I'm
gonna put that out like in him about two days because I have it ready to rock a
roll I just didn't want to combine it with this here lesson so I am gonna do
that next lesson we are gonna look at the theme of the scattering and the
gathering of Israel how it was fulfilled and I think that will give you insight
as we're going through the New Testament and I'm talking about these other themes
and you'll kind of you'll start making that connection as well I don't know if
I explained that very well but you'll you'll catch on you're you're you're
smart crowd out there okay that's about all I have right now so I'm gonna cut it
up right here and thanks for tuning in happy new year like I said and I'm gonna
be back at you here probably in about three days I think so appreciate it
folks we will see you next round Adios!
