-: Welcome to Automatic Plan Correction with Query Store.

This is a live webcast.

My name is Kendra Little and I am the founder

and creator of SQLWorkbooks.com.

Today, we will be looking at one part of

the new Automatic Tuning features in SQL Server.

We will be looking at a feature

called Automatic Plan Correction, which uses Query Store

in your SQL Server 2017 database or higher to look for

cases where a query has slowed down significantly.

It can notice that, hey, when you run with this plan

you're faster. We had a regression, so I'm going to

automatically tune you and give you the fast plan,

then I'm going to validate and make sure it really is faster.

It's got some intelligence there about trying out

this faster plan, and it is designed as a safety net

so that you can make sure that your queries

don't slow down forever.

It's not going to prevent your queries

from ever getting slow, because it has to

notice that they got slow, but it can then jump in and say

"Hey, maybe I can speed you up."

There's another part of Automatic Tuning

that we won't see today that's called

automatic index management: it's

currently available in Azure SQL Database.

Maybe it will show up somewhere along the roadmap in

the version of SQL Server that we install ourselves, later.

That's for another day, because we can spend

the whole day today talking about Automatic Plan Correction.

Our mission today in exploring this is:

okay how do we turn it on, what does it do,

and, if you're interested in this,

what is a starter plan for using it?

And I'm actually really excited about this

and if you have Enterprise Edition I think you should

at least be looking at the recommendations for this,

if you're on 2017 or higher. Potentially this could

even take part in, if you're making a proposal

to upgrade SQL Server to get the money for that,

potentially this could be one of the

selling points for your upgrade as well.

I think it's a really interesting feature.

Some folks are frightened of this because it sounds like

maybe we won't need DBAs anymore.

I think, really, it's exciting

rather than threatening and I'll show you why.

So first up, how do I turn it on?

It is not complicated to turn it on at all.

The first thing you need to know, though,

is that you do have to have the Query Store feature enabled.

The plan correction relies on Query Store collecting

the plans and aggregate information about performance

about, okay, how much average CPU time is that plan using?

So we have to have Query Store

all set up first and collecting data.

Then, we enable Automatic Tuning.

Now here is the bad news.

Automatic Tuning is Enterprise Edition only.

Query Store itself is not only in Enterprise Edition.

You can use Query Store widely-- and I am going to show you,

okay if I don't have Enterprise Edition

and I don't have Automatic Tuning,

what can I do with Query Store where I can at least

see the types of things it's making suggestions about?

I'll give you kind of a work-around,

the manual version, if you don't have Enterprise Edition.

The other thing about Automatic Tuning

is you enable for the entire database.

You can't turn this on for just a given schema.

You can't say, "I want to tune

everything except that procedure."

It's all the queries that run in a database,

whether the queries are in stored procedures or not.

Now we've got a question here from Allen.

Allen says, "Is this only available in Enterprise Edition?"

Yes, in fact, only Enterprise Edition and I did also

do a check that, okay, can I see the suggestions

if I'm not in Enterprise Edition?

In fact I can't even see suggestions in the DMV

if I'm not in Enterprise Edition.

Here is the command that we use to turn this on.

Right now in SQL Server 2017

we can say set AUTOMATIC_TUNING FORCE_LAST_GOOD_PLAN ON.

That is the Automatic Plan Correction feature.

That doesn't automatically tune my indexes.

This will look for regressions in my query plans

and try to see if the last good one,

the last fast one, really is faster when I keep running it.

If you try to run this command in Standard Edition,

it gives you a nice little message that says:

please insert more dollars if you want to

turn on the Automatic Tuning feature.

Wah wah wah.

Sorry about that, but like I said, I will show you

if you are in Standard Edition, how can I see

the types of queries that this would tune in my Query Store?

We've got a way to do that.

Let's now do the fun part and dig in and start

looking at Automatic Plan Correction.

You've got these scripts available for download.

What I wanted to do was create a set of scripts

where, just using Management Studio,

you could restore a small database,

this uses the BabbyNames Database

that you can download for free,

and then, run a workload against that database

that gets a procedure that is auto-tuned.

So I've configured Query Store,

I've enabled that forced last good plan,

and then I've already run this workload

which runs a query that is

sometimes fast and is sometimes slow.

Particle Detectors at CERN's LHC | What the Physics - Duration: 2:59.

Particle physics would be nothing without detectors, but this is what they

used to look like - a cloud chamber. Filled with supersaturated alcohol vapor, when

energetic charged particles travel through it they rip off the electrons of

the air molecules leaving behind an ionized trail of gas. These ions then

attract the alcohol acting as condensation centers which allow a cloud

to form. Particle physicists used to take photographs of these cloud tracks and

use those to work out what was happening.

Bubble chambers worked in much the same way but instead of supersaturated vapour

it was superheated transparent liquid and instead of clouds forming it was

visible bubbles. But things now are quite a bit different!

The experiments as part of the LHC are incredibly complicated so how do

particle detectors work in the 21st century? ATLAS is one of the two

general-purpose experiments at the LHC. Its inner detector tracks particles just

like a cloud chamber, but by using pixel detectors and semiconductor trackers

it's silicon chips that are doing this electronically. It also has a combined

transition radiation detector and straw tracker which detect particles by using

materials with lots of different refractive indices and a combination

of gas and wires respectively. The outer detectors measure the energy deposited

by the particles in these calorimeters. And the experiment produces a tremendous

amount of heat, which has to be cooled by all this water. The ALICE experiment,

which looks at heavy ion collisions at the LHC, also uses pixel detectors

similar to ATLAS and this is what they look like. But this is its main tracker,

which works a bit like a wire chamber filled with gas that gets ionized and

wires to send the signals. LHCb, an experiment focusing on bottom quarks,

also has one of these - here it is. It also has two optical detectors picking up the

light produced by the particles through scintillation and Cherenkov radiation.

Thanks so much for watching this video let me know which detector did you find

the most interesting write in the comments below and do like and subscribe

for more stuff from me, cheers.

Hibernate Tip: What's the Difference Between JOIN, LEFT JOIN and JOIN FETCH - Duration: 6:16.

Hi,

I'm Thorben Janssen from thoughts-on-java.org with a new Hibernate Tip.

I got the following question via email and thought

that it is an interesting topic for a Hibernate Tip.

So here it is:

I saw JPQL queries using JOIN,

LEFT JOIN and JOIN FETCH clauses

What are the differences between these 3 join clauses?

You might know the JOIN and LEFT JOIN clauses from SQL.

It supports clauses with the same name

and a very similar syntax.

The JOIN FETCH clause is specific to JPA

Let's take a closer look at all 3 options.

Let's start with a simple JOIN clause.

In JPQL, you can define a JOIN clause,

based on a specified association between 2 entities.

Your persistence provider, for example, Hibernate,

translates this into an SQL JOIN clause.

The SQL JOIN clause tells the database

to combine the columns of 2 tables

to a set which you can use within the same query.

You can define a join condition that specifies which rows

of each table shall be joined

with each other.

All rows which don't fulfill the condition are not part of the set.

In most cases, this condition compares the

values of a primary key column of one table

with the values of a foreign key column of an associated table.

But you can also define more complex conditions

using multiple columns of both tables.

In JPQL, you need to define join clauses

based on association mappings.

This mapping provides the names of the foreign key and primary key columns.

That makes the definition of the join clause easier,

but you can't add any additional predicates.

Here's an example of a JPQL query that returns all Author entities

who've written a Book

which title contains the word "Hibernate".

It joins the Author entity with the Book entity

and uses the title attribute of the Book

in the WHERE clause.

If you activate the logging of SQL statements,

you can see that Hibernate generates the

following statement for the JPQL query.

It uses the defined many-to-many association

to join the Author table with the

association table BookAuthor.

It then joins the association table with the Book table.

The LEFT JOIN clause is similar to the JOIN clause.

The main difference is that a LEFT JOIN clause includes all rows of the entity

or table referenced on the left side

of the clause.

I use a LEFT JOIN clause in this query

to select all Authors with the lastName "Janssen"

and their Books.

If the database contains a Book for a specific Author,

the query returns it as the

second element in the Object array.

Otherwise, that array element is null.

A simple JOIN clause would only return the Authors

who have written a Book.

The second element of the Object array

would never be null.

Hibernate generates the following SQL statement

for this query.

It selects all columns mapped by the Author

and Book entities

and uses the defined association to create a left join

between the Book and the Author tables.

The FETCH keyword of the JOIN FETCH clause is JPA-specific.

It tells the persistence provider to not only

join the 2 database tables within the query

but to also initialize the association on the returned entity.

You can use it with a JOIN and a LEFT JOIN statement.

Let's change the first example and replace the

JOIN clause with a JOIN FETCH clause.

The JPQL query selects Author entities.

But as you can see in the SQL statement,

Hibernate now selects all columns mapped by the Author

and the Book entity.

Hibernate then maps the result set to Author and Book entities.

It uses the Book entities to initialize the

books attribute of each Author entity

before it returns a List of Author entities.

OK, that's it for today.

MY VISION OF RUSSIA 2018 | What have i learnt in Russia | Juliana, Brazil - Duration: 4:55.

Hi everybody, my name is Juliana

and i want to show you My Vision of Russia

This is my country, Brazil, in South America

I lived in the capitol, Brasilia

This is my family, and they all loved to travel

And have been to many countries

And, of course, i also dreamt of that.

But i had a big problem

I didn't know at all where to go

That's why i reflected for a long time, and then decided

I wanted to go to the biggest country in the world...

Russia.

I don't know much about Russia

And when i found out i was going to live i Yekaterinburg,

I didn't even know what was Yekaterinburg

Later i found out it was Ural

And that's why i expected huge mountains

But actually is not like that

Anyway, in Urals i learnt we should always wear warm socks

And is a great excuse to buy yourself cool ones

I already knew that here all would be different

But i was very happy when i found products

that i thought only existed in Brazil

"Juliana, what are you searching?"

"I don't know..."

"Condensed milk!""

"You like condensed milk, Juliana?"

I wanted to live a real russian life

And did very nice things like russians

Or almost like russians...

This is the New Year's speech

I also learnt cool and interesting ways of expressing anger

And they are without bad words at all

Look:

Ioshkin's cat

Pine stick

Pancake

"Juliana, i am sorry"

"ALO, you are late!""

After flying almost 26 hours from brazil to Russia

I understood that Earth is big

But then...

After being 27 hours in the train,

I understood that Russia is big

I thought that in Brazil all was far

And that's true... All is far

But here is Russia, the distances are even bigger

Here in Russia we drink tea very often

And for me, the best moment is when

Is when we drink tea in library, with Tatiana Mikhailovna

And read poems

I do not always understand the meaning of the poems

But when Tatiana Mikhailovna explains, then i understand it all

"... What does he search far away?"

"What he left in homeland?" "There"

Read "Sail"by Lermontov, please. I can not translate russain poems haha

And last and maybe main that i found out in Russia

Are the people

People that carry behind themselves a great history

That do not open themselves to strangers

And don't smile all the time

But you have to wait a bit

And then you will have great friends

Warm smiles

And amazing people

Thanks to my family, my friends and AFS, of course

You're Getting What You're Creating...with Elizabeth Peru - Duration: 1:55.

Hello, I'm Elizabeth Peru and this is the week of March 2 to 8, 2018 in your

Tip-Off Global Energy Forecast - life is like being in a room of mirrors. What

you see around you, what you experience around you, is what you're creating from

within you. Perhaps you know that intellectually, but this week it's more

paramount than usual to focus on it. We've just come through Eclipse season

physically, emotionally, spiritually mentally. You've changed,

Earth's changed, the cosmos has shifted all of us and it's more important than

ever that we 'refocus' ourselves, that we focus on what's within us because that

IS going to be what you experience outside of yourself. And I know many of

you are reporting on a bit of chaos going on outside of you. Well, it all

comes from within you. You've been stirred up, now it's time to rebalance.

And in this week's forecast 'every day' I'm going to show you how. Let's work

together this week, over the next seven days, day by day because the energy is

quite specific. Work with it, work with the cycles to advance your life and get

back on track. I look forward to sharing it with you. Have a beautiful week, you can

do this and thank you...

What I bought from Japanese CVS!~conbini review(Lawson&Family Mart)[ENG, KRN SUB] - Duration: 3:06.

I'm gonna show you guys

what I bought from Japanese CVS today

So first,

I bought bananas

Since they won't go bad tomorrow

and also the day after tomorrow

like this, I bought

about five? bananas

so I bought the whole packaged one with five bananas in it

and also, water! which I really need

without water

well you're gonna be dehydrated

and this mix sandwich

I also bought this one

well this is how it looks

and...salad!

I also got this salad

I bought this one at 7/11

come to think of it

these bananas and sandwiches are also from 7/11

adding to this salad from 7/11

it says, "mixed vegetables salad"

and~

this riceball is the one I got for myself

ah, sorry!

these bananas were from Family Mart (but I guess it doesn't matter since all bananas taste the same regardless of where I got them from)

so to continue, the riceball I got is~

Ta daa~!

Ta daa~! (for the second time)

I'm not sure if this flavor is the limited edition thingy

Personally, I saw this flavor for the first time

so I ended up buying this one

and~

this riceball is for my friend

and its flavor is tuna mayo

also

this boiled egg!

Ah, I like this one!

Yuki ichigo(literally means snow strawberry-it's a strawberry daifuku)

Yuki ichigo!

(my face tickles)

This one tastes really good!

for those of you who haven't tried this one,

I really recommend this!

and~

I know it's repetitive but I really love strawberries

so I bought this strawberry mochi too

Kinako-chan, who's one of my viewers

has strongly recommended me to try strawberry sandwich

so I'm thinking of trying that one out too during my trip (I tried it! It tastes so nice♡)

and finally for the last

I bought apples!

which I eat every morning

To be honest, I'm sort of tired from all the walking today

so I'm thinking of eating these tomorrow morning (I'm really sleepy right nowㅇㅅㅇ!)

Well then, good night everyone~!

night! (in Korean)

What to do at the scene of a car crash - Duration: 12:50.

hello so in this video we're going to take a look at what to do if you're involved in a car crash

I'm going to tell you what the legal requirements are what you must do then

more importantly maybe well you mustn't do there are certain things you mustn't

do or say or you could end up in trouble so let's get straight into the video now

look at three major things you must do immediately if you're involved in a car

crash so the first one is most importantly check if anyone in your

vehicle is injured make sure you look at everyone but ask everyone if you feel

okay say if you've had a friend asleep in the

back seat don't just assume that they're still asleep that may have been injured

you do need to if it's safe to do so wake them up and check if they're okay

they'll probably been working up anyway but even in fairly minor crashes

people can get injured quite easily know if anyone is injured of course call for

an ambulance the next thing you need to do is make

sure you get the number plate of the other vehicle

it's very common I've had this happen to me where people crash into you they

realize it's their fault and it's Drive off and it's hoping that you haven't got

the number plate now if you've got an in-car camera system they are invaluable

not the one I use it's so handy to have that because if they do drive off no no

you can't prove they drew they drove off before other than them to apply to

anyway because you'll have got it recorded before the crash they even

happened the third thing you need to do is don't just jump out your vehicle so

before you get out your car have a look around and taken the situation around

you does it look suspicious are there any people standing at the side of the

road he looked like they may be talking to

the other driver is the more than one person in the other vehicle it's a two

or three people in that car is anyone on the phone before the crash even happened

they got cameras filming you because when I last what happens a lot on a

nowadays is people will get together in a car they'll go and cause a crush then

they'll all pretend they've injured two men loads of money and I conveniently

had their phones out filming at the time of the crush to trying you know to make

the money off you to try and get the conversation another thing that can

often happen is that people which won't steal your car they'll go and Nick a car

will buy an old banger and then are driving is your vehicle called

and then they'll just get out when you get a you jump out to look at the car

see what damage you is they'll get in your vehicle and drive off so those

things are rare but they do happen so if you involved in the crush number one

check your people injured number two okay the other vehicles number plate and

number three don't just jump out of the vehicle assess your surroundings if you

look suspicious lock the doors and stay in your vehicle if it's safe to do so

now let's move on to why you actually need to do when you meet the driver so

when you carry your vehicle then you made the other driver the main thing is

keep calm and polite don't start making threats don't get angry don't start

saying they're an idiot and they've crashing their serum and all that you

learning about the situation worse now by law they must give you their details

if they refuse that's a good enough reason to call the police you can't just

have a crush and say I'm not telling you where I live no not going to tell you

you must by law give the other person your details the minimum you should go

through the person is a name address and I can turn them but if it isn't their

vehicle you also need the address of the owner and the vehicle now there are some

situations where you might feel threatened maybe the other person has

been aggressive maybe the son I'm going to find out where you live and I'm going

to come and sort you out tonight no another situation now I've

never been in this situation myself but I believe you can do you can nominate a

police station so you say to the person look I won't give you my details now

because I believe you're going to do something stupid I'm going to go down a

local police station I'm not going to give them my details tell them which

station it's going to be now that advice used to be on an official government

website he was actually taken down a few days ago just before I film this video

so I would say that you're better off giving them your details right away but

if you've got a very good reason to feel that threatened by them although they

are making threats against you don't feel ashamed to call the police if

they're being aggressive and they're threatening you you've got every right

to do that now next thing you need to do is take photos and/or video of your

vehicle now pretty much everyone's got a phone with a camera on these days so get

your phone out take some photos why because what can happen is people

will have a fairly minor crush and then the other person will go away and have

another crush although you start getting a hammer smashing the car in and I

minded damaged much worse than it is to try and get and you car out of it

instead he just have a linear bumper but I'll know my hole for an end it was

smushed in look at it and they've gone in driven into a lamppost or something I

know it sounds unlikely but it does happen you need to take pictures of your

vehicle and the other vehicle to make sure that that's the damage there was

there trying to video it you know I've done this several times as you'll see

almost sites there were several videos on there you can watch me involved

several different crushes and say Howard out with them and I do take photos in my

vehicle and the other vehicle it's essentially the eyes because

unfortunately people are not honest anymore and people will try and make

money out of a bad situation now if you've been involved in the crash

you know position let's say you're on an amide you Junction you do need to try

and get out of the way but make sure you get the details first make sure you get

the other drivers name address and number trying it up before you move away

from the area unless you in the media danger because guess what some drivers

won't give you the details they'll just say oh yeah we'll drive around the

corner pull over there and I'll give them a name then they just

drive off when you get the other person to give you the details make sure that I

buy them name don't write them down yourself don't be there with a pen and

paper so much your name what's your address get them to write it down why or

two reasons first of all it proves that over there because you've got their

handwriting on a piece of paper I had a crush once where the other driver said I

wasn't even there on the only thing about it and I'll send

the document a bit of paper he'd written on so my June scum date and I said to

him ball can you explain if you weren't there how come he's got your handwriting

with you know him the dress on and he tried to make out all that's because I

know him any was going to come into my house do some painting or some rubbish

get them yeah get them to write down their details it proves one they over

there and he also proves secondly that those are the details I gave you you

could write it down a name say oh no I didn't sign number ten or

said number 20 you must have misheard me and are trying to fake it so get them to

ride the details own never ride and Diaoyu so you write down your details

they have all known their details don't just listen to other sign and write it

down now if you've crushed into another

vehicles you need to design for each vehicle if you're involved in a three or

four car pileup each person needs to give their details well if you've

crashed into a parked car we need to make a know the details it's a good idea

to leave your details on a paper underneath their windscreen wiper just

put a note saying you know this vehicles involved in accident these are Mardis

house this is mine Shira and then they can contact you if you've injured any or

hun injured if you've damaged any way called street furniture not benches

lamppost it's a good idea to call the council and tell them you don't always

have to you know if you saw could it all scratched on the lung person something

if you've caused serious damage to a bus stop for example you need to contact the

owner of that property and tell them otherwise you could end up in more

trouble because you haven't told them now so far that's what should do let's

have a look what you shouldn't do never ever admit fault for the crush the

reason for this is you don't know if it's your fault or not now let's look at

this scenario for example you're driving down the road

it's just sorry you know you're going a little bit over the speed limit

eating 33 in a third zone a car pulls out from the left and you crash into

them and you get out sunl sorry sorry I was going to see fast

that's my fault and the other drivers thinking what a mug I was on my phone I

didn't even sting coming down the road and he's just emitted it's his fault

don't be like that don't ever admit fault don't say sorry because saying

sorry is our way of admitting fault all you need to do is exchange details leave

the scene you be very cold and calculated don't saw get into arguments

don't start saying it's falsities don't start saying you're injured

now the reason so don't start saying you're injured is in many injuries

actually don't appear dull hours or sometimes even days later when you get

these people who are involved in a car crash and the start sign or me neck

in a corpsman exerting I've had a wee plush and he didn't start four hours

till after the crash so people start saying that they're injured maybe they

are but they often you don't feel injuries till later on so if you run

your phone you insurers to report the accident don't tell them you injured

unless you are of course tell them you are injured but don't make out you

injured if you're not don't try my money from conversation because if you do that

but you couldn't evaluate your whole claim unless you are I call of course

actually injured don't try and make some money for me because unfortunately

nowadays people involved in car crashes one of the first things people think is

all great money or get thousands conversation it isn't that easy you will

have to locate through medical medical examinations and it's not as easy as you

once so please don't go and try make money out of a bad situation after

you've been involved in the crash write down what happened Strada why why

because you're forgetting you might be surprised by this but within an hour of

a crash you start to died things when it happens you'll think why did i polite I

was clearly Stigler left they didn't see it and I would see lighter your mind

start playing stops to fight tricks on you and you'll think hold on was I

signaling do you know put it on did he wide me to go what did I imagine that

it's so easy to forget write it down as soon as you can but I done everything

you think I'll go even better get you come right and record it speaking to the

camera saying exactly what happened because believe me your mind apply

tricks on you and you'll start to die will actually happened

take it easy because a crash can have more of an effect on you than you think

maybe sad the rest of the day off work if you were going to go out somewhere

maybe don't go out somewhere it's surprising how much the car crash can

affect you and it's quite a comment if you to feel nothing at the time and a

few hours later your hands are shaking you start getting a pounding headache

stomach acts are very common you'll get horrible horrific stomach cramps and you

might need a day off work or off whatever you do so take it easy up to a

crush and give yourself a few days to recover even if it's fairly minor

the final thing I'll say for now is don't talk to the other persons in

shira's you're very often get a phone call from the other person's he/she was

a few days later or even a few hours later saying we understand you've been

involved in a crush we're really sorry it was our our persons full will give

you some money we'll settle it now that normally means that I know it's going to

be very expensive and I know that they were a fault

not the problem this is once you've set all the case if you accept money for

that case that's all yet you can't cabal later not

for more so they may offer you a thousand pounds anything with thousand

pounds I'll type that your car goes for garage and the side is three thousand

pounds of damage and you might be covered because you've already accepted

what they offered you before now in terms of going for Gary's getting it

fixed and all that you insurers will go through that with you so I'm not gonna

go over one now it's different for every company but most companies will arrange

feet secured to a garage of their choice I'm gonna prove to Peres you will

normally get a courtesy car but there's so many variations on that I'm not going

to go over them all so I hope you found that video helpful it is really useful

to know what to do at the scene of a crash and if you have nobody watch them

have a look at the videos I've done where you can watch me being involved in

a crash myself and have a look at what I did

I've been looking well actually happened and you'll see me following these pieces

of advice myself so thanks for watching remember those points I've told you and

you shouldn't have too much trouble if you are lucky enough to be involved in a

car crash

What Is Executive Function? - Duration: 3:22.

Trouble with executive function isn't a diagnosis or a learning

disability on its own, but when kids have a weakness in this area it impacts

learning and everyday life. The term executive function may not be familiar

to some parents. It refers to a group of important mental skills that allow us to

set goals and get things done. There are three main areas of executive function:

working memory, flexible thinking, and inhibitory control, which includes

self-control. Working memory is the ability to keep information in mind so

you can then put it to use. Flexible thinking is being able to see problems

from multiple angles and find different ways to solve them. And self-control is

the ability to stop before you respond on impulse, to control your attention and

your behavior, and to manage your emotions. Kids who struggle with

executive function often have trouble paying attention and focusing, organizing

and planning, starting and completing tasks, and shifting focus from one task

to another. It's important to know that executive function issues don't have

much to do with intelligence. Kids with executive function issues can be just as

smart as their peers who don't have these challenges. It's not clear exactly

what causes executive function issues, but we're learning more all the time.

Research using MRI shows that people who struggle with these skills have slower

development in the parts of the brain that are responsible for executive

function. There also seems to be a genetic component. Many kids who struggle

with executive function have a parent who also does. Things in the environment

could also play a role, including high stress, poor nutrition and sleep, lack of

exposure to language, and low quality of caregiving. Problems with executive

function are closely tied to ADHD, but kids with ADHD aren't the only ones who

have trouble with these skills. Many kids with learning issues also have

weaknesses in executive skills that contribute to their challenges.

For example, some kids with dyslexia have trouble with working memory. So even

after they've become fluent readers, they might have problems with reading

comprehension. They might have a hard time understanding a chapter they're

reading, because they can't remember what happened in the chapter before it.

Executive function develops over time. So many kids find they have fewer

challenges with it by the time they're young adults. But these problems don't

always disappear completely. The good news is that there are ways parents and

teachers can help kids improve executive function, and learn strategies for

working around their challenges. Classroom accommodations like extended

time and preferred seating can help. So can tutoring in organization skills.

Research shows that even brief interventions, teaching kids how to pause

and reflect before they respond, leads to improved executive function, and actual

changes in how the brain functions. And for kids with ADHD, treatment for that

disorder can often reduce the symptoms caused by weak executive function skills.

With the right supports, kids with executive function issues can do as well

in school as their peers, and have an easier time managing the tasks and

activities of daily life.

What Is Cryptocurrency? | No Dumb Questions with Nancy Graham - Duration: 6:37.

Cryptocurrency?

Bitcoin?

Blockchains?

Admit it: Not long ago, you were blissfully ignorant of all these terms.

Technically, cryptocurrency has been around since 2009, but it's only recently kicked

into overdrive and suddenly, people can't seem to get enough of it.

Which brings me to today's "No Dumb Question" – "What is cryptocurrency?"

This will be closely followed in my next video with: "Should I buy some of it myself?"

Spoiler alert!

Here's my grand conclusion, which I'll explain in my next video: If you do decide

to buy into cryptocurrency at this time, know that you're speculating,

not investing.

You might get lucky with your gambit and hit a big jackpot.

Or you could just as easily lose it all.

It's buyer beware!

But first … let's define what we're talking about to begin with.

And don't forget, for continued clarity to any of your cryptic money matters,

connect with me on LinkedIn, or subscribe to my YouTube channel and click on the bell.

Have you caught cryptocurrency fever, or are

you at least wondering what the commotion is about?

As you read all about it, you may wonder if you're missing out on that opportunity that

everybody else and their aunt has piled into.

Education is the best first step toward making informed choices.

So, first, let's define some terms.

And … let's have a little fun while we're at it!

By way of introducing some of my teammates, they're going to help me with today's

Q&A session.

Brady: Hey, Nancy, what is cryptocurrency?

Thanks Brady.

I'm glad you asked.

Cryptocurrency is essentially a kind of money – or currency.

And thanks to electronic security – or encryption – it exists in a presumably safe,

and sound, and limited supply.

Pair the "encryption" with the "currency," and you've got a new kind of digital asset,

or electronic exchange.

Well, sort of new.

Cryptocurrency was first coined – no pun intended – in 2009, supposedly by a fellow

named Satoshi Nakamoto.

His Wikipedia entry reads like a dime-novel thriller, suggesting he may or may not actually be

who he says he is … but whoever he is or they are, Nakamoto is credited with designing

and implementing Bitcoin as the first and most familiar cryptocurrency.

Ethereum is currently its second-closest competitor, with plenty of others vying for space as well,

and more are likely to come.

Unlike a looney or a gold coin,

cryptocurrency exists strictly as computer code.

You can't touch it or feel it.

You can't run it through the rinse cycle if you accidentally leave it in your pocket.

But increasingly, holders are receiving, saving and spending their cryptocurrency in ways

that emulate the things you can do with "regular" money.

Brady: So then how is cryptocurrency different from "regular" money?

After all, I can securely transact Canadian dollars electronically too.

Excellent question, Brady.

In comparing cryptocurrency to regulated "fiat" currency – or "regular," legal tender

like the Canadian dollar – there are a few key points to make.

First, since neither fiat nor cryptocurrency are still tied to the value of an underlying

commodity like gold or silver, both must have another way to maintain their spending power

in the face of inflation.

(Psst: See my past video for a review on inflation.)

For legal tender, most countries' central banks keep their currency's spending power

relatively stable.

For cryptocurrency, there is no central bank.

Its stability is essentially backed by the strength of the underlying "ledger," or

blockchain, where balances and transactions are verified and then publicly reported.

In other words, those blockchains had better be very secure and very verifiable!

There's also that "limited supply" thing I mentioned earlier.

Obviously, if money really did grow on trees, it would cease to have any value.

That's why even our cherished maple leaves won't buy you much, no matter how much we

enjoy seeing them emblazoned on our team's sports jerseys.

Again, for our legal tender, the Bank of Canada is in charge of stabilizing its value by limiting

supply without strangling demand.

While cryptocurrency fans offer explanations for why and how its supply will

be managed with its demand,

I'd say the jury remains out on how effective the systems will be in sustaining

this delicate balance over time.

I'll spare you the technical details, but if more and more people decide to get in on

the action, the processes will likely demand new, more scalable solutions than

what is currently available.

Brady: Hmmm.

Since Canada already has its own, time-tested currency, why would someone want to

use cryptocurrency instead?

Well, it can have its appeal.

Most notably, if you're not a big fan of government oversight, the system is essentially

driven "by and for the people."

With no central authorities in charge, cryptocurrency transactions are meant to be direct,

peer-to-peer exchanges.

At least in theory, this is supposed to allow the currency to flow more freely, with less

regulation, restriction, taxation, fee extraction, limitations and similar iterations.

Moreover, cryptocurrency transactions are anonymous.

If the world were filled with only good, honest people, cryptocurrency and its related infrastructures

could represent a better, more "boundary-less" system for more freely doing business with

one another, with far fewer of the usual hassles associated with international commerce.

Unfortunately, in real life, you can imagine how this sort of unchecked exchange can also

be used for all sorts of mischief – like dodging taxes, laundering money or funding

terrorism, to name a few.

Bottom line, time and technology will tell whether or which cryptocurrencies will evolve

into a widely embraced tool of legitimate commerce … or disappear into the dustbin of interesting

ideas that might have been.

Brady: Got it.

One last question though.

Well, two, really.

Why is cryptocurrency so hot now?

And, since it is, should I go buy some more?

Excellent questions, Brady!

They are so important, in fact, that I'm going to answer them in my next

"No Dumb Questions."

To be notified as soon as my next "NDQ" is hot off the press, be sure to follow me

on LinkedIn, or subscribe to my YouTube channel.
