Hello everyone and welcome to Train Talk!

Today, I'm going to tell you the story of the Golden Spike National Historic Site, which

is located at Promontory Point, Utah.

This was the site of completion of the Transcontinental Railroad and today, it features a visitor's

center and display site with two replica steam locomotives.

Let's dive right in!

The transcontinental railroad was a massive undertaking that linked the east and west

coast of the United States with a railroad for the first time in history.

The project was written into law by the United States Congress and approved by president

Abraham Lincoln in 1862 and construction began the following year.

Two railroads worked on the project, starting from opposite ends: the Union Pacific from

Omaha, Nebraska in the East and the Central Pacific from Sacramento, California in the west.

Later, the Central Pacific railroad became the Southern Pacific Railroad.

The Transcontinental Railroad was finally completed on May 10th, 1869, at a place known

as Promontory Summit.

A ceremony was held for the completion and telegraphs were present to tell the rest of

the nation the precise moment the railroad was completed and open for business.

Two steam locomotives were on hand for the event and made up the backdrop for the well

known photograph of the completion of the transcontinental railroad.

A special laurel wood tie and series of spikes made of various precious metals were used

as part of the ceremony, the most famous of which was a spike made of gold.

It is this spike that the site was later named for, but more on that later.

The Pacific Railroad was finally finished.

With the railroad completed, goods and people could be moved across the country in under

a week.

The railroad continued to thrive and grow.

Eventually, it was decided that Ogden Utah, located directly to the east was a better

meeting point for the two railroads due to Promontory's remote location, so Union Pacific

sold their section of track between Promontory Point and Ogden to the Southern Pacific.

In addition to the route through Promontory Point being remote, it also had steep grades

and was indirect, since it went all the way around the north side of the Great Salt Lake.

The Southern Pacific built a bypass route in 1904, known as the Lucin Cutoff.

This new route cut directly across the middle of the Great Salt Lake, using a series of

causeways and a 12 mile long bridge.

Today, this route is still used by freight traffic.

Union Pacific bought out the Southern Pacific railroad in 1996, and the bridge on the Lucin

Cutoff has been replaced by a causeway, but much of the original transcontinental rail

line is still intact.

The line through Promontory Point was finally abandoned in 1942, and the rails were pulled

up.

In the 1950's, there was a renewed interest in preserving the original right of way through

Promontory Point due to its historical significance.

So, in 1957, Promontory Summit was established as a National Historic Site in an effort to

preserve the historic right of way and work began to restore it to how it appeared on

May 10th, 1869.

Two steam locomotives were moved to the site to perform reenactments of the golden spike

ceremony in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the completion of the railroad in 1969.

These locomotives were done up to appear as the two locomotives that were at the original

ceremony: Central Pacific number 60, the Jupiter, and Union Pacific number 119.

Unfortunately, both original locomotives were scrapped in the early 1900's.

Following the 100th anniversary celebration, the National Park Service looked into having

their own replica locomotives built for demonstration purposes.

The Park Service first turned to the Walt Disney Company, which had built full sized

replica locomotives for the Disneyland theme park.

Disney turned down the offer because they didn't think that they could make replicas

to within a quarter of an inch of the originals, as specified by the contract.

Eventually, the contract went to Chad O'Conner, a friend of Walt Disney and fellow train enthusiast.

It is said that Chad significantly underbid all other offers and even put some of his

own money into the project just to have the honor of building these replica locomotives.

The locomotives were built at the O'Connor Engineering Laboratories in Costa Mesa, California.

Since no blueprints existed of the original locomotives, O'Connor and his team had to

use calipers to measure and scale up all the dimensions of the locomotives from historical

photos.

The paintwork was even more of a challenge, since color film did not exist at the time.

The only resources available were written accounts of the event and the various different

shades of grey seen in the photos.

Disney animator Ward Kimball also contributed to the project, painting the original artwork

on the locomotive tenders and domes.

The two replica locomotives were completed and delivered to the Golden Spike Historic

Site in 1979.

Today, the Golden Spike Historic Site serves as an interpretive center of the impact of

the Transcontinental Railroad on the nation.

There is a Visitor's center with various displays about the railroad construction and

two theaters.

Outside the visitor's center, the actual site where the golden spike was driven has

been completely recreated, including a couple hundred feet of track, some wooden benches,

and a period correct American Flag.

During the summer months, both locomotives are fired up almost daily, and various demonstrations

are made throughout the day.

On Saturdays and holidays, a complete reenactment of the driving of the golden spike is held

with volunteer actors in period clothes.

In the winter months, maintenance is performed on the two replica locomotives in the engine

house, also located at the historic site.

The Park Service has guided tours of the engine house so that visitors still have a chance

to see the replica locomotives, even if they aren't under steam.

And finally, in addition to the Visitor's Center and re-created ceremony site, several

miles of the original right of way are preserved as driving and walking paths.

The driving of the golden spike forever changed the United States.

It meant that goods and people could finally travel across the country quickly.

It ushered in a new era in the history of the nation, bringing goods closer to market

and people closer to each other.

Within a few years of the railroad being completed, fresh produce was being shipped across the

country for the first time ever, thanks to refrigerated box cars.

It made a lasting impact on how we move goods.

And, it created a railroad that still ties the country together to this day.

A golden spike is still kept on display in the visitor's center at the Golden Spike

National Historic Site.

The original, used in the ceremony, is now kept at Sanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Jack Ma: Success At Any Age (motivation 2017) - Duration: 32:48.

it is my privilege to be here this

evening with Jack Ma one of the great

entrepreneurs of our time of course the

founder of Alibaba and we have so many

things to talk about over the next half

an hour and of course we also want to

try to get to your questions as well

we're going to talk about Alibaba of

course but also China the Trump world

that we all live in globalization and

trade and and so many other issues but

first of all thank you I'm sort of my

owning us let me start with this which

is to say that you just spent some time

inside Trump Tower in and when to go

visit with Donald yeah our president

elect in the United States tell us about

that meeting what's very productive

meeting much better than I thought that

I expected what did you expect well I

heard a lot and watch like anybody i

watch all the news and heard a lot about

him so when I go inside us all hmm

anything that up but he's very sort of

open minded listened what I talk so I

think I'm a very happy bad results and

filed when he he said he offered so Jack

let me walk you down so i assume he's

very happy by the results we had can i

ask how does a meeting like that happen

do you call him did he call you well how

does this take place well that's that's

the question I'm asking myself

because some Sunday I got some requests

from people say Jack do you want meeting

the president-elect I say is that true

or not because I'm not ready for that

because I don't know what to talk about

and then few days later I got another

request I got a several requests and

then I saw one email which worth ran has

very sort of specific I thought I

thought about it I think yes maybe I

should go and have a talk and at least I

think present left on the Trump would be

happy to hear what I want to talk about

so I went and what did you tell him

about the small business talk about

agriculture products talk about the

trade between China and the USA we

special focus on Todd telling about how

can we bring this small business in

America sell them to China to age it

through our network which can create a

lot of jobs for them and you committed

to create what you say is we're going to

be 1 million jobs in the United States

yeah / unify five years yeah now that's

not a million jobs that Alibaba itself

but you're not hiring a million female

no we are all totally Alibaba employ put

together it's like a 45,000 people we

cannot hi one day I cannot imagine I can

manage one minute people

now explain to us how you think about

the us-china relationship given some of

the comments that Donald Trump has made

about China being a manipular enci

manipulated that did that come up during

your meeting well I think first in

America there's a freedom of speech

right so he can say whatever he wants

and I respect I understand but of course

i have my views we did not debate about

the china-us a trade or manipulation

within a debate with another we actually

agreed on something small business

developed in the Middle West America

helping the farmers their small business

there to exporting to China so we all

agree but something that we do not

discuss about the you know the American

did the job losing to China Mexico and

this can I share with you my ideas

please yeah first I think 30 years ago

when i justa graduate from universities

I heard America and a wonderful strategy

they also the manufactured job service

jobs they also manufactured to Mexico

and China also the service jobs to

Indian there's a book called the world

is flat Tom Friedman yeah a league of

the near time and I think it's a perfect

strategy you know that the American said

we just want to conclude the adjust want

to technology we just want to brand to

leave but the law and the jobs for the

world grace strategy and second is that

the american international companies

made millions and millions of dollars

from globalization the top 10 top 100

companies in America amazing I remember

when I graduate from the University I

try to buy a deeper the motorola beeper

cost to me two hundred fifty dollars my

pay at that time to ten dollars a month

as a teacher and the cost of making that

beeper is only eight dollars for a chip

so pastor 30 years IBM Cisco Microsoft

they made a ton of woman the money the

Prophet did made a much more than the

four largest banks in China put together

the moat china mobile phone china unicom

in or whatever you name it put together

still these multinational companies made

more money death so the market cap grow

more than 100 times in past of the years

but where the money go this is what I'm

a curious custom some business people I

always care about the balance of shit

where the money coming when money go

past 30 years the American had 13 wars

spanning fourteen point two trillion

dollars the money going there what if

there's been a part of them money on

building up the infrastructure helping

the white cause the divided colors and

blue colors no matter how strategy good

it is you're supposed to spend money on

your own people right only not everybody

can pass Harvard like me we may now

Chris education right we should spend

money on those people who are not a good

as schooling and the other money which I

curious about is that when i was young i

heard America's bad fold fold and Boeing

those big manufacturing companies last

10 20 years I heard about his Silicon

Valley and Wall Street the money go to

the wall street and what happened year

2008 the financial crisis wipe it out

nineteen point two trillion dollars usal

off then why put all of the white colors

and destroyed 34 million jobs globally

so what it's the money is not a wall

strip what if the money spent on a

Middle East Middle wealth of the United

States developing the industry there

that could be changed a lot so it's not

the other countries still jobs from you

guys it is your strategy okay but are

you do not distribute the money that the

mine and things in a proper way this is

what I and now we're having a backlash

and that backlash is a rebuke of

globalization and so much of the

conversation frankly that we have here

and that backlash is happening in the

United States but i will say president

she was here yesterday you had lunch

with him and he was quoting Abraham

Lincoln what did you make of that well i

would say that globalization is a great

stuff it's it's the USA's developer

countries to teach us how to do

globalization I remember 2002 or one

would people trying to join the WTO

everybody in China wasn't worried me I

was worried because what if all the

international products come to China

destroy our industry and we have lose a

job so convinced the China after 20

years then you guys hotel and say this

is a terrible thing I believe

globalization is good but globalization

need to be improved this is Donald Trump

president-elect want to solve it the

problems that globalization I think

should be inclusive globalization in the

past of 30 years the globalization was

controlled by 60,000 big companies a

hundred years ago globalization was

controlled by several kings and emperors

what if next to 30 years we can support

six million business doing this cross

book what if in next 30 years we can

help support 20-minute small business

can do business cross the ball so this

is something which I believe

globalization should be inclusive and do

you think that the words present she

will happen in reality which is to say

yeah that China has largely acted on its

own behalf for many many years and now

is effectively saying that the US needs

to continue acting on everybody else's

behalf yeah I think you know the world

to need some IOUs are being to such a

mr. Xie yesterday said it's a wonderful

time it's a best time or the worst time

the world need a new leadership

but the new leadership is about working

together this is what I understand we do

not necessarily need one specific leader

to teach us what to do what not to do

but the world had to partner together

this is what I think and I think I like

as a Chinese as a business people I like

I feel proud for what President as she

said yesterday as a business person I

want the world to share the prosperity

together for joining the force together

as a Chinese I'm happy about what he

committed yesterday he said you know he

speaks like us take the responsibility

of the second largest economy as the

China second largest economy he has to

take some responsibility it's the first

time I heard a chinese leader make

number commitment he said next ten years

we are going to import ate a US dollars

this if you live you make me feel

excited because China is transforming

from exporting to importing if there's a

concrete a number if we can fulfill it

this is going to be huge change to the

China and to the wall but I think that

it's easier today for China to be

interested in globalization because of

the benefits that accrue that can accrue

to China because you're continuing to

develop than it is for countries that

are quote unquote developed well first

the WTO rule is not designed by China

it's not night by China I will say

there's something that I want to change

the WTO is designed a lot louder rules

designed for big companies and popular

years and only big companies can do it

and China definitely benefit a lot from

opening I think Chinese shall learn one

thing that we grow in the past of the

years it's because we open to the world

it will continue to open our way not

fully American business that wants to

affect we go into business in China has

a very difficult time has to partner

effectively with a company that's there

already this is why I said China has the

problems to the world as

and China has deafness a lot of problems

China should open should have been more

confidence this is what I feel yesterday

after the confidence of mr. XI that he

is ready to open more to the child to

the world this is what I suggest that we

should solve the problem by business

community and fight negotiation WTO

China join w204 suit for 20 years of 70

years I have done the number but the

past years that I think we as a business

we as a country with the world we have

to review something and but not because

unbalanced the things we stop it you've

been calling for something called ewt p

yeah what is that this is what I would

talk about is that the WTO was great but

they mainly designed for developer

countries big companies there's no

opportunity for small business we want

to build up aw electronic world trade

platform to support young people small

business thanks through mobile phones

internet they can sell by across the

board and the other thing is that W is

is a very interesting organization when

you put the door hard round we put 200

government offices in a world room ask

them to agree on something it's

impossible III can never imagine that

they can agree on something together

business should be designed about

business people so we believe ewt p

should be something that the business

people sit down together agree on

something negotiate or something and get

endorsement from the government we

talked a little bit about Ali Baba and

the model itself because I think for

many in the West if you will they don't

necessarily understand it and to the

extent down I to Natalie that the extent

that i could try to compare it to amazon

which I know you think is an unfair

comparison one of the things that's so

fascinating to me is that amazon and

Jeff Bezos have pursued what might be

described as a very asset heavy business

model they're buying airplanes they want

only tires

supply chain from beginning to end and

Alibaba has effectively an asset like

business it is very much in terms of the

retail piece of this the opposite you

don't want to own the warehouses you

don't want to own the logistics

companies how do you think about that is

Jeff Bezos right or you right and is

there is there going to be a meeting in

the middle I hope both are right and

because the world can never have a one

model if the world has only one correct

a model there was too boring but we need

have all kinds of models and the people

who do the bottom should believe in the

models and I believe what I do right the

difference between amazon and us amazon

is more like an empire everything they

should control themselves buy and sell

and our philosophy is that we want a

bigger ecosystem our philosophy is to

empower others to sell empower others to

sit to service empower making sure the

other people are more powerful than us

making sure with our technology our

innovation our partners I was ten very

small business sellers they can compete

with Microsoft IBM our philosophy is

that we we think using Internet

technology we can make every company

become amazon remember one thing today

for ourselves our gme last year is more

than 550 billion u.s. dollars to hide

people deliver for us we need a 5

million people so how can we hide

five-minute people deliver things for us

to deliver the things we sold the only

way we do is empower the service company

largest companies making sure they are

efficient making sure that they make the

money and making sure that they can hire

more people without owning the whole

chain can you do it as effectively the

idea that you're having watching Amazon

being able to deliver things now within

hours literally we made a hundred twenty

five cities deliver within one day last

year in London ten years ago deliver one

thing from Beijing to house or takes by

the 80 days now you can deliver things

from a hung from Beijing to minimum

glory or some city within 12 hours it's

improving you can never expect these

things happen within 24 hours we have

patience so I think clean imagine that

we did the 11 11 singles day we sold 17

billion trillion billion dollars and by

delivering more than 600 million

packages within three days this is

happening and this is what we feel proud

of is not how much money we make is not

how powerful we are we think because of

the technology we can make the

technology very inclusive that every

small companies can use it this is my

dream because I start my first business

1992 in China as a small business being

ordered to borrow money 5,000 u.s.

dollars from bank took me three months

to acquire still fail so difficult to be

a small business today with the

technology we can empower them this is

something I wanted it one of the

critiques is you know and it continues

to linger around alibaba's the piracy

issue this is a night there's an IP

issue and it's issue all over China but

it you you take the brunt of a lot of it

now how much progress have you made in

your mind and how do you think about

some of the regulatory bodies and other

countries including the US that

continued to criticize Alibaba for this

issue first when we start do this

business at the business like this size

you have to take all the criticism you

have to listen what is right what is

wrong and the second is the e-commerce

when you put 10 minutes small business

empower them to sell we do not like

Amazon 5 we cannot even you buy when you

buy fifty five trillion dollars of 55

550 billion dollars you cannot check

every products so the model itself and

the e-commerce or the self may have a

lot of this frost

and third I would say in the past 17

years we are the leader of this empty

privacy this is the IP protect IP but

the second that we are internet

companies we do not have the law

enforcement we find this guy is selling

product cheaper you know fake products

we delete them we cannot arrest them but

we're a huge progress last year alone we

put 400 people into Jill's with delete a

370 million freak product listing on our

site I want to say we are the leaders

and we are using the big data to check

out who's buying who's manufacturing

who's selling what is that dress so now

I'm happy about the whole world

especially China all the government

organization start to realize the issues

so i would tell you a good thing is that

today when you go to those criminal

group which i call them criminals those

fake products manufacturers sellers you

praised the quality though of some of

these i would talk about it later right

those criminals that they can go

anywhere but not not top on t-mo because

using our data we trace where they are

who they are what's the address what

they now I will deliver this to the

police station and working with that the

rest the quality issues is something I

want to share with people it's not by

praising the fake products I want to say

that for so many years those branded

accompanies you have to be very careful

because the fake products their quality

improving is scary that is the

difference between us because we find

guys the thing that people said this is

fake and you have to find people you

have found a third-party institution to

check it as a fake or not we find

sometimes the quality is better and I

tell you another thing is that either

scary

there's a one brand company he said we

are selling fake products we check

everything it's nothing wrong so sir hmm

what is wrong we buy the parts from his

flagship and delivered to that this is a

fake you know the thing we buy shop buy

things from the flag shop of this brand

and deliver back it's the fake products

they say so it's a bit confusing this is

fighting against the fake products it's

the wall against the greeting human

greediness it's not easy you cannot have

finish it but you have to continue to

fight and i want to say we put two

thousand people 1 billion i'd be every

of fighting again that it can never

finish the role within two years but i'm

happy whether people criticize me

criticize the most important is that we

are happy about the progress we've made

but if people praised me so you know

when people's a jack you're wonderful i

know i'm not wonderful right all about

the great we are not great we are just a

17 year old company but when people say

you're doing nothing no we're doing lot

of things but you have to argue you have

to debate you do what you believe one of

the things you mentioned was using big

data on the piracy side but the other

thing that you're using a lot of that

big data to do is provide credit yeah

and effectively banking the unbanked and

what's so fascinating to me and i hope

you'll share it is we talked about the

sesame credit how how you are able to

use big data effectively to figure out

who deserves credit and who doesn't in a

marketplace where some of these people

had no credit history before ok well

before we do that we had a system could

teach computers to learn how to entice

fake products teach the computers learn

how to because we have a leap a lot of

people try to use all the ways to

cheating so we teach the computer how to

do that the cheating things so we've

been doing that for 10 years until now

there is called artificial intelligence

because we've been doing that we are a

data company eight years ago we said to

ourselves alibaba should not be an

e-commerce company we should be a data

company because we have the data from

consumers we have data from the the

manufacturer of datos from logistic

companies and transactions but we think

of how we can make it betta really

beneficiary to the society what China

need is that we have a lot of great

people all the small business they have

a very they're very credible but the

other we don't have a credit system for

that so how can we using a credit rating

system based on the data so we have to

giving everybody a Sesame a rating

system that is so powerful in the past

four years because every individual

every small business if they have been

using our services would give no rating

system so we're giving loans in the past

five years with giving five million

business loans the only about borrow

five thousand dollars three minutes we

can decide whether we should give you

money how much you want to give readings

it one second the money will be in your

account and zero people touch so we

called 310 and even today the sesame

rating system become people dating the

mother-in-law want to say hey you want

to date you with my daughter show me

your rating system of the sesame car so

it's so funny we go to the people want

to rent a car people want to rent a

bicycle they will say show me your

sesame cards good just if they do not

have paid back if they do not fulfill

the radiances are going to blow down and

they can never rent a house right this

is what we want to build up the system

that if you sell or buy fake products

the sets in the cars we're sure i'm

going to open up to questions but a

final one for me there's been a lot of

speculation that you're going to get

into the business of Hollywood your name

has appeared how a Volvo Group at the

beginning of a couple of big films

recently what is the ambition for

Alibaba in the entertainment world

on the beginning were like this several

years we every five years we have a

review for our strategy now our strategy

is always look at the 30 years and 10

years every strategic decisions we make

we have to ask one question the

disposition we make solve society

problem because we believe the biggest

social problem you solve the most

success where you are so if we do this

cannot solve any social problems we

don't do it second is this project is

going to be successful in 10 years if

it's going to be successful in 10 years

let's do it if it's going to be

successful in one year or one month

normal i say forget about it because why

you can be successful in one year or one

mouth so we all have to prepare and five

years ago we had a big debate about 10

years later 20 years what are the things

this china society the world leave want

so we say happiness and health 2h

strategy the happiness and health we

believe hollow you know the movie

industry bring people happy because

today nobody is happy rich people are

happy poor people not happier you know

at least when i watch movie after you're

happy but but so I think we should

partner with the Hollywood especially

like a lot of you know we have a

different way of living and in China the

movie we have a lot of heroes but China

movies heroes always dead the American

me movie here will never die

if all the heroes die who want to be the

hero so my movie I want to make the hero

live right so this is this is I think we

should learn a lot and it's only about

two years so we have another eight years

ago I want to make our company that it's

not ecommerce it's something that given

people inspirations given people because

I learn a lot for example I will see

that my favorite movie Forrest the gum

and on life stuff this is I learned and

that inspired me that is why when people

call me crazy stupid past the 70 years

you're crazier doing something that will

work you're stupid how can do that model

imogen this model eat me this model why

add about this model I told myself force

the gum set go ahead that would care

about what the other people and the

other thing Forrest Gump said nobody

make money out of the catching whales

people make money by catching shrimps so

we serve small business or not jack ma

we should probably end it there is it

going to run out of time but I thank you

thank you so much for the conversation I

promise we sleep in a question or two

when we literally have two minutes and

they're going to get into upset with me

if you have a question of and we're

going to got beg you to do it within

literally you know a second to go for it

right there

well I don't think I think China and the

US should never have a trade war will

never have a trade war and I think we

should giving president-elect on it from

some time and he's open-minded he's

listening and I think the world is so

easy to launch a wall but it's so

difficult almost impossible sometimes to

terminate a wall the Iraq war

Afghanistan war is that finished no

trade war I believe one thing when trade

stops the world starts trade is

something that people start to

communicate train is something people

exchange culture and valley and I will

be happy if China USA agree on something

and Alibaba did this business model

destroyed I would destroy allapattah

model by stopping the world fitting

because how can you imagine the first

largest economy of the world second

largest economy of the world have a

tradable it's going to be a disaster for

two countries and for the world if we

can anybody can do something to stop it

do anything to stop it did you have a

reaction to trump and the situation with

taiwan and how he's thinking about that

well tile art I think this is this is

not that something about government this

is not something of a business is

something about the people if the tower

is suit is the population if you do tie

Was ist das Politische am Kapital? #Marx200 - Duration: 7:29.

What does the word political mean in the critique of political economy?

To me, the economy is political.

Every economy, including the capitalist economy, is political.

Regardless of the fact that the ideologues of capitalism ...

try to convince us of capitalism's a- and pre-political nature.

They present our historically specific economy,

as an economy that has always existed in this way.

You attempt to free yourself from ideology.

Marx provides a fundamental theory of society, not of domestic economics,

not of macroeconomics.

Marx was not primarily concerned

with an analysis of capitalist society as such

and laws such as the tendency of the rate of profit to fall and surplus value.

Rather, he was interested in how the dynamics of capitalism produce

the potentials to overcome capitalism.

I am Michael Brie and I work for the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung,

I am a founding member.

I focus on the theory and history of socialism

and the transformation of capitalist societies.

My name is Wolfgang Fritz Haug.

In 1959, when I was 23 years old,

a string of coincidences led to the founding of the magazine Das Argument.

To a certain degree, I am a product of that magazine.

My name is Bini Adamczak.

I work as an author and artist in Berlin's Kreuzberg neighborhood.

I first read capital during a school strike.

Since then I have continued to study Marxist theory.

In particular, I have attempted to create

an imaginary dialogue between Marx and Butler.

First of all, Marx is not a Marxist.

He is a brilliant young bourgeois philosopher

with a PhD.

His point of view is universal,

not of vested interests.

That's important.

Therefore he automatically stands in opposition to ruling interests.

The book is called 'Capital'.

We could call it

the Old Testament of capitalist society.

In capitalism, capital is God.

The imperative, the commandment of capital is to multiply.

We teach our children to prepare for the labour market so they can

be valorised.

The same holds true for municpalities. They need to attract investors.

The question is: How can they valorise the municipality?

Or in the case of Germany as a business location.

Marx precisely analyses this underlying dynamic.

We work to fulfil the needs of others.

Conversely, we depend on the work of others to fulfil our own needs.

All our needs depend on the work of millions of other people.

However, we don't feel like we are

dependent on other people. We feel like we are dependent on money.

Part 1 Commodities and Money

The greatest challenge competition creates in capitalism

is to reduce labour.

Why? If you are more productive, i.e. can reduce the labour input

or produce more with the same amount of work, you beat your competitors.

Marx then says, if this is the case,

then we end up in a situation, where we have lots of spare time.

We try to ensure a steady supply of necessary work,

salaries for necessary work for everybody.

But a different form of wealth develops.

From Marx's Capital we learn that the question is not simply

to ensure that the state can re-distribute

the wealth created through exploitation.

Within such a perspective, people are merely consumers.

At best, the recipients of state benefits.

Rather, the aim must be to produce and reproduce

this wealth of society differently.

Including material, social, gender-based and sexual wealth.

People who read capital today, don't talk about

revolution or the dictatorship of the proletariat.

What would dictatorship of the proletariat mean today?

In the 1960s and 1970s, the mass of assembly line workers

represented the backbone of what we call the 'Fordist working class'.

They won important battles and social achievements.

That era is history.

This class has

been replaced by a nameless mass of

salaried workers and people, who are only nominally self-employed.

They do not see themselves as workers, but they form the working class today.

This multitude of people, depends in one way or another

on formal or informal salaried work.

If they would learn to recognise and understand each other,

they would become an unstoppable force.

If they don't, they won't.

We need to ask: how do we want to live?

Which needs do we want to fulfil?

Based on which work? How should we collectively organise this work?

These questions turn the economy

into a political issue.

Collectively answering this question in a radically democratic manner

and taking everybody who is affected into account,

would no longer be capitalism but communism.

It Was Us Against The World | Alexandra & Marcie - Duration: 8:40.

- You also told me,

"You're pretty,

but you know how many pretty girls there are in the world?

You have to be more."

(gentle piano music)

- Ready?

- I was born ready. Are you ready?

- Hello.

- What features or traits do you think we share?

- Oh my goodness,

we actually share a lot of the same traits (laughs)

It's actually kind of weird.

We definitely have the same eyes

and I think we have the same lips, for sure.

I think the traits we have in common are

just like that go-getter attitude,

very independent, do it yourself,

bold and courageous,

risk taker,

also likes a good challenge as well.

I think those are some things that we have in common.

- It is our work ethic.

It is our loyalty.

- For sure. - You're extremely loyal.

You have some friends that you're very loyal to.

And dedication.

- What is most beautiful about me?

- Your spirit.

I know it might be talking about your outer beauty,

you have a beautiful smile but I would say your inner spirit

and your ability to just love.

You love your family.

- You hit that on the head.

Do you like my hair?

- I love your hair.

(laughs)

- Cause it came from me, of course.

- But, it's coming.

- Yeah.

(laughter)

I personally like it when it's longer

and me, personally, I like it straighter.

That's a generation thing

because I have naturally curly hair and my entire life,

I have blown dried it straight and flat ironed it

and curled it and everything and that's just a generation,

but that fact that you've come to a point in your life

where you can wear it short

and put a little something into it and go and it's curly

and it looks as good as it does,

then that makes me happy. - Yeah.

- But, it's a generation thing

and that women with long hair, et cetera,

but and you know your grandfather and grandmother love it.

- They do.

- I know.

(laughs)

I'm out voted.

- Yeah yeah.

Cause every time I see them they always compliment me

on my short hair.

- Okay.

(laughs) Short and sassy.

(laughter)

What have I taught you about beauty and confidence?

(laughs)

- So first off,

you are a tomboy,

that's a great way to explain you.

And we're actually,

we have a lot of similar traits,

but we're very opposite in especially

in the beauty department.

I help you with your hair and your make-up (laughs)

and I pick out all your clothes.

Cause you need a little help,

but don't worry, I got you.

(laughter)

But, you still taught me

I think it's just the basics of

really just embracing who you are.

I feel like you always encourage me just to be myself and

when you walk in the room, all eyes will be on you.

Just own it.

but it's way more just about who you are as a person.

- What was your favorite hairstyle to put me in?

- My go to was the ponytail with the Afro puff.

Yes. Cause I didn't have to do anything.

I just pulled, brushed it,

put it in a little Afro puff, and kept going.

(laughter)

I got teased a lot, but that's okay

and your cousin, actually,

had to use a Cabbage Patch doll one time

and teach me how to braid your hair.

- Who?

- Holly.

She used a Cabbage Patch doll.

So we sat down,

I would divide it half to pig tails,

so then I went from the Afro puff to pig tails with braids

which still wasn't real good,

but it was better than just the Afro puff.

- So when you say people used to tease you

about how you did my hair. - Yes.

What would they say?

- They would tell me I was not very good.

(laughter)

I mean, they would just say,

"Typical white girl. You can't do hair."

That kind of thing. - Yeah.

- Which is true. I'm a country girl and I just didn't know.

And to top it all off, we all know I'm a tomboy

and I don't care about my hair that much.

I would say that was one of the biggest challenges I had,

if not the biggest challenge until you got older

and then you started being able to do your own hair

or Socora would braid it for you.

- Yeah.

Well and also, we've had conversations, too,

I think it's interesting that your mom never taught you

how to really maintain your hair.

- No.

Do you remember me telling you,

my hair was so curly that we actually put a perm on it

and sat there and combed it straight for like 30 minutes

or however you're supposed to leave a perm on

and combed it straight thinkin' that was gonna work.

And that didn't work.

When did you start doing your own hair

and what did you like doing your hair different

from the way I did it?

(laughs)

- I never really did my hair, now that I think about it.

And if it was, it was just a really simple pony tail.

Cause we had, I would wear braids, I would get it done.

I would get it relaxed.

I would go to the hair salon.

Honest, I feel like I really just started doing my hair

in the past two years.

And that's when I've been really getting

more used to my texture and my curl pattern,

but before that, too, it kinda makes sense.

I never really wore my hair curly.

- I remember with you doing your hair,

you went through a lot of stages

in your teenage years and even into your early 20s,

where'd you do the sew in or you know,

those type of things and now this would be a challenge,

this is a good topic here.

(laughs)

They'd get the hair sewn in

and then I would have to take it out.

Yes, that was interesting.

Remember me getting a steak knife?

Getting the steak knife (laughs)

and trying to cut the string.

- You trying to cut the thread.

- And a couple times, I cut my finger, too.

- Yeah. - Uh huh.

But then, I had to start getting Courtney and them

to come over and help me

cause I just couldn't do it anymore.

- Yeah.

- Why do you love me?

(laughs)

- Oh, wow.

Oh, I can go on and on, girl.

Earlier, we already talked about it,

but just that loyalty

and that unconditional love

not that you only share with me,

but everybody around you.

Definitely (deep breath)

I think just

also how supportive you are

of everything that I've ever done

from volleyball to track

to school to work, whatever,

you have been, by far, like number one supporter.

Every single time.

Woo, y'all ima mess up my make-up up

But yeah, I would really just say this

I love you for

being strong and being courageous and being brave.

Just being such a loyal person

and supporting me in every single thing that I've done.

- Okay.

We've been through a lot.

You know, your dad was like the love of my life

and I've told you that before

and when he died,

it was the three musketeers

and it was us against the world

and I might have been then

that I stepped into that mama bear role

because I almost looked for people to try to do something

to one of you because I lost him

and I wasn't about to lose either one of you

and that's why probably I got quite so protective,

but I love you and I'm proud of the woman you've become.

- I love you, too.

- Cut it.

(laughs)

Radium Was a Miracle Product, Until it Started Killing People - Duration: 3:20.

Hoping to get your pearly whites brighter?

Try radioactive toothpaste!

Is that a sad, boring piece of toast?

Spread on some radium butter for a tasty treat.

Looking worn out?

Don't forget to treat your skin with radium cosmetics, for that bright, youthful look.

Considering what we now know about the dangers of radiation, these products seem preposterous.

But they were real.

In the early 20th century, the harmful effects of radiation exposure weren't fully known

until a group of women in New Jersey paid a fatal price for us to find out.

So, what is radium anyway?

Well, radium is a chemical element that was discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898.

It's found in uranium ore and is formed when uranium and thorium break down.

It's highly radioactive, which means it gives off energy called radiation.

And that radioactivity is actually useful in treating cancers, which is exactly what

radium was used for shortly after its isolation.

In addition to all of that, it also gives off a pretty cool faint, blue glow.

Now, at the beginning of the 20th century, the mystical healing properties and glow of

radium were being used by advertisers to sell a range of products from food to cosmetics.

It was like the early 1900's version of kale, except instead of being a leafy green,

its horrifically deadly radiation salts.

Sometimes this was just a clever marketing ploy, but certain products, like the drink

Radithor, actually contained small amounts of the chemical element.

The elixir was famously used by celebrity golf champion Eben Byers, who later died from

radiation poisoning.

But it wasn't radium's medicinal uses that led to the exposure of it dangerous side

effects.

It was its use in glow-in-the dark paint.

In Orange, New Jersey, the United States Radium Corporation used a radioluminescent paint

called "Undark" to illuminate the dials on watches used by the military.

The women working in the factory who painted the watches were instructed to use their lips

to fashion their brushes to a fine point.

And while their clothes and hair would glow from the radiation exposure, they were all

assured it was safe.

But then, the eventually nicknamed "Radium Girls" started to become gravely ill.

Their teeth fell out, their bones broke, their jaws actually fell apart.

It's really a horrific part to this story that we can't fully get into here. Now, there

are articles online and a few books you can check out if you want to know just how much

these women suffered.

And we think you should, but be advised, it is not for the faint of heart.

At first, the miraculous radium wasn't the suspected culprit for all of this.

But, in 1925, a medical examiner made the shocking discovery: the radium that they were

putting on their hair, clothes, skin and lips had been absorbed into the women's bones.

Radium, as it turns out, is easily mistaken for calcium by the human body.

And once it's absorbed, the radium blasts the bones with alpha rays, resulting in bone

damage, cell mutation and cancer.

Some of the workers sued the U.S. Radium Corporation, but their employer fought back, blaming the

women's worsening health conditions on syphilis.

The women settled their case out of court, receiving a lifetime annuity and medical benefits.

Within a decade, they had all died.

But the Radium Girls story continued after their court case.

The ruling set the precedent that workers could sue employers based on damages for on-the-job

abuse.

And their story led to further investigation into the adverse effects of radiation.

Today we use radiation in a lot of different ways, from x-rays to treating cancer.

We better understand radiation and its risks, and there are several laws in place to protect

us from the dangers of radiation.

Unfortunately, it took a tragic event for someone to stop and take a look at the possible

dangerous effects of radioactive material on the human body.

Want to know more about medical history?

Well check out this video I did about what it was like to get the very first vaccine.

What Charles Barkley Would've Done If He Was At Fenway - Duration: 7:27.

WE'RE BACK WITH CHARLES BARKLEY.

NOW CHARLES, IT SEEMS THAT THE NBA OR TNT HAS JUST RELEASED

EMOJIS BASED ON RETIRED PLAYERS AND 1078 OF THEIR SPORTSCASTERS.

I JUST WANT TO POINT OUT THAT YOUR EMOJI RIGHT HERE IS A HALF

EATEN DONUT.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?

IS THAT HURT YOUR FEELINGS?

>> YOU KNOW, LISTEN, I'M A LITTLE HEAVY RIGHT NOW.

YOU KNOW, I JUST GOT MY SECOND HIP REPLACEMENT.

SO I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO WORK OUT, SO THE DONUTS HAVE BEEN

FLOWING FREELY.

AND I, EVERYBODY KNOW I'M A KRISPY KREME GUY.

LIKE WHEN ARE YOU DRIVING UP THE STREET AND THAT LITTLE HOT SIGN

COMES ON.

>> Stephen: YEAH.

>> YOU HAVE TO-- I CAN'T STOP IT.

>> Stephen: THAT'S JUST A BLACK HOLE.

>> IT IS.

THAT LITTLE HEART SIGN, IT'S LIKE GRAPH TAITIONAL PULL.

>> Stephen: NEIL DEGRASSE TIE SON CAN'T EXPLAIN THAT.

>> NO, HE CAN NOT, HE CAN NOT.

BUT I LOVE KRISPY KREMES, BUT CAN I WORK OUT NOW, I HAVE TWO

FUNCTIONING HIPS.

>> Stephen: OKAY, AGAIN, THE THREE ON THREE THIS SUMMER.

>> NO.

I'M NOT-- LISTEN, YOU GOT TO KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS.

PI BASKETBALL DAYS ARE OVER.

THEY OVER.

AND JUST FOR THE RECORD, Y'ALL'S OVER TOO.

>> Stephen: MINE NEVER REALLY BEGAN.

MINE NEVER REALLY BEGAN.

NOW YOU HAVE-- YOU HAVE OPINIONS ON EVERYTHING.

ALL RIGHT?

YOU HAVE OPINIONS ON EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD.

I UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE AN OPINION ON A FASHION TREND.

YOU SPENT SOME MONEY TO TRY TO END A FASHION TREND.

>> PIE GOAL IS TO RUIN, RID THE WORLD OF THE MAN BUN.

(APPLAUSE) THAT, THAT IS NOT A THING.

SO WE GOT-- .

>> Stephen: BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GROW ONE?

WHAT'S THE REASON?

>> NO-- YES, YOU'RE RIGHT ON THAT.

BUT WE HAVE THIS KID WITHOUT WORK NAMED ANDY.

HE HAD A MAN BUN.

I SAID I WILL GIVE YOU $1,000 TO CUT OFF THAT THING, LET ME CUT

IT OFF ON TV.

AND I CUT OFF THE MAN BUN.

THE THING WAS, I WOULD HAVE WENT UP TO 5,000, WELL $2500.

BUT I SAID $1,000.

I SAID $1,000.

HE JUMPED AT THE $1,000.

SO I CUT HIS MAN BUN AND PIE GOAL, IF I CAN GET ME A LITTLE

GROUP OF GUYS TOGETHER AND WE JUST WALK AROUND THE COUNTRY

JUST HOLDING GUYS DOWN JUST CUTTING OFF THAT DAMN MAN BUN.

>> Stephen: NOT SURE THAT'S LEGAL.

NOT SURE IF THAT IS LEGAL.

I JUST WANT TO PAUSE ONE SECOND HERE AND WE'LL EDIT THIS MOMENT

OUT IN THE SHOW BUT YOUR BUTTON IS UNDONE RIGHT THERE.

>> OH, SORRY.

UP HERE, STEVEN-- STEPHEN.

(APPLAUSE).

>> Stephen: ALL RIGHT.

MY APOLOGIES.

>> OKAY.

>> THAT'S OKAY.

>> Stephen: I'M ONLY HUMAN.

>> EYE CONTACT.

>> Stephen: I UNDERSTAND.

I UNDERSTAND.

>> YOU KNOW, DEEP IN THERE IS A SIX PACK.

>> Stephen: DOWN IN YOUR NAVAL, LIKE IN A MINI FRIDGE.

>> YEAH, DEEP, DEEP.

IT'S BIGGER THAN A MINI FRIDGE RIGHT NOW.

BUT NEXT TIME I COME ON YOUR SHOW, I'M GOING TO BE SVELT.

>> Stephen: ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT.

>> I'M GOING TO SPEND MY ENTIRE SUMMER WORKING OUT WITH MY

TRAINER.

>> Stephen: ALL RIGHT, I WILL SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER.

>> OKAY.

>> Stephen: THAT SOUNDS GOOD, THAT SOUNDS GOOD.

(APPLAUSE) ALL RIGHT, SOUNDS GOOD.

NOW YOU HAVE GOT A VERY SERIOUS PROJECT RIGHT NOW ON TNT.

IT'S CALLED AMERICAN RACE.

ITS FOUR HOUR LONG SHOWS WHERE YOU TRAVEL AROUND THE UNITED

STATES TO TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT RACE.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO DO THIS?

WHY NOW?

>> WELL, I WANTED TO DO A POSITIVE SHOW ON RACE.

AND IT STARTS ABOUT THE SITUATION BETWEEN THE BLACK

COMMUNITY AND THE COPS.

>> WE NEED TO MEND THAT FENCE.

CLEARLY SOME THINGS THAT HAPPENED, THE COPS MADE SOME

MISTAKES AND SOME PEOPLE IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY GET MADS AT ME

BECAUSE I DEFEND THE COPS.

THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I FOLLOW THE COPS BLINDLY.

I ALWAYS SUPPORT THE COPS BUT THEY HAVE MADE SOME MISTAKES AND

WE HAVE TO BRIDGE THAT GAP.

ONE EPISODE IS ABOUT THE MUSLIM BAN.

I THINK IT'S SO DISRESPECTFUL TO ALLOW A LUMP A WHOLE RELIGIOUS

BROWP INTO A BOX THINKING THIS HE ARE ALL TERRORISTS AND THINGS

LIKE THAT.

SO THAT IS A REALLY POWERFUL EPISODE.

(APPLAUSE) AND ALSO WE DO, TALK ABOUT

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS WHO I THINK ARE GETTING A BAD RAP IN

THIS COUNTRY.

THEY'RE HERE, THEY'RE WORKING THEIR BEHIND OFF.

THEY DO A LOT OF WORK.

THE BLACKS AND WHITES DON'T WANT TO DO.

AND REALLY JUST LIKE LAY EVERYTHING OUT ON THE TABLE.

SO I MET SOME AMAZING PEOPLE.

WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE SHOW FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS AM LIKE

I SAID, I JUST WANT TO CREATE A DEBATE.

I'M NOT TRYING TO CHANGE ANYBODY'S MIND.

BUT WE SAY THIS ONE LADY, SHE IS AMAZING, IS HE GOES CRAZY ON ME

BECAUSE HER SON SHE SAID WAS BEATEN TO DEATH ON THE COPS.

>> AND SHE SAID I ULSZ ALWAYS SUPPORT THE COP. I SAID TO A

CERTAIN DEGREE.

I DON'T WANT EVERYBODY TO THINK THEY DO THINGS PERFECT.

BUT I WANTED PEOPLE TO SEE HER FACE AND HER PAIN.

THAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO SHOW THAT.

AND ALSO WE TALK ABOUT THE MUGS LIMB-- MUSLIM RELIGION.

BUT I DON'T EVEN THEY ANY MUSLIMS LIKE THAT.

AND I WANTED PEOPLE TO SPEND SOME TIME AROUND A MUSLIM FAMILY

AND SO THEY CAN SEE THESE ARE ACTUALLY REAL PEOPLE.

AND SAME THING WITH THE UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS.

I SPENT A DAY WITH THEM, AND THEY HAVE BEEN HERE OVER 20

SOMETHING YEARS, WORK FOUR AN PFEIFFER JOBS, THE MOM AND DAD,

THE THREE KIDS, LIKE STRAIGHT A STUDENTS.

AND THEY DON'T DRIVE, THEY DON'T GO OUT AT NIGHT 6789 THEY HAVE A

SYSTEM WHERE THEY TALK TO EACH OTHER EVERY HOUR TO MAKE SURE

SOMETHING HASN'T HAPPENED.

AND I ASKED-- .

>> Stephen: THAT ONE OF THEM HASN'T BEEN PUCKED UP BY ICE.

>> I ASKED WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESIDENT

TRUMP AND PRESIDENT OBAMA.

THEY SAID THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE.

BECAUSE UNDER PRESIDENT OBAMA THEY ONLY GOT DEPORTED FOR

FELONIES.

WHERE PRESIDENT TRUMP THEY ARE GETTING DEPORTED EVEN FOR

MISDEMEANORS, SO CLEARLY THAT SAY HUGE DIFFERENCE.

LIKE I SAY, I WANTED TO BRING A CONVERSATION TO IT.

>> Stephen: WHAT ABOUT IN SPORTS.

DO YOU THINK WE'RE GOING BACKWARDS AT ALL?

BECAUSE ADAM JONES WHO IS THE CENTER FIELDER FOR THE ORIOLES

GOT CALLED RACIAL SLURS AT FENWAY THE OTHER NIGHT, THE "N"

WORD, PEOPLE THROWING PEANUTS AT HIM.

AND THEN THE NEXT NIGHT CAME OUT AND GOT A STANDING OVATION.

>> I DIDN'T LIKE THAT STANDING OVATION.

IF I WAS IN A CROWD OF PEOPLE AND THEY WERE INSUMENTING ANY

ETHNIC GROUP, I THINK THAT I AM MAN ENOUGH TO CALL THEM OUT.

I'M NOT GOING TO SIT THERE AND LET THEM WE RATE ANYBODY

CONTINUOUSLY.

SO I WAS MORE DISAPPOINTED IN THE CROWD, BECAUSE IF SOMEBODY

IS JUST SITTING THERE LISTENING, YOU ARE CONDONING IT.

>> Stephen: SILENCE IS CONSENT IS WHAT ARE YOU SAYING.

(APPLAUSE) WELL, THE SERIES IS CALLED

AMERICAN RACE.

THE MAN IS CHARLES BARKLEY.

IT PREMIERS NEXT THURSDAY ON TNT.

YOU CAN SEE CHARLES ON INSIDE THE NBA THROUGHOUT THE PLAYOFFS.

CHARLES BARKLEY, EVERYBODY. (APPLAUSE)

LOOK Something CHILLING Was Just Found At Mexican Border – You Won't Believe This… - Duration: 2:44.

LOOK Something CHILLING Was Just Found At Mexican Border – You Won't Believe This…

A report released by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) this week demonstrates all tunnels

discovered were under the U.S.-Mexico Border.

The report revealed that from fiscal years 2011 through 2016, 67 cross-border smuggling

tunnels were discovered along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Sixty-two out of the 67 smuggling tunnels were in the Border Patrol's Tucson, Arizona,

and San Diego, California, sectors which are known strongholds of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The GAO also found there were 534 detected ultralight aircraft incursions and 309 detected

incidents of drug smuggling that involved small fishing vessels.

Seventy-five percent of the maritime drug smuggling incidents occurred on the Pacific

coast.

"While these methods account for a small proportion of known smuggling, they can be

used to transport significant quantities of drugs or for terrorist activity," the report

noted.

Breitbart Texas has reported extensively on the different techniques used by Mexican cartels

to smuggle narcotics and humans into the United States.

Most recently, Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents discovered two tunnels within the span

of a week.

The first was on April 26, when agents discovered a tunnel that extended into the United States

by 60 yards and had collapsed.

The next tunnel was reported by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on April 28, where

agents found one under construction.

In April 2016, U.S. authorities found what they believed was the largest ever cross-border

smuggling tunnel along the California-Mexico Border.

The tunnel was estimated to be over 800 yards long and included an elevator, lights, rails,

and a ventilation system.

Rep. Ami Bera: Health Care Was A Bad Vote | Hardball | MSNBC - Duration: 5:32.

STEPHANIE GOSS. WE'LL BE BACK TO CHECK IN LATER

AS THE PRESIDENT MAKES HIS ARRIVAL.

NOW TO THE HOUSE VOTE TO REPEAL OBAMACARE.

I'M JOINED BY STEVE RATNER, AN CHECK ADVISER TO PRESIDENT

OBAMA. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

CONGRESSMAN, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, THIS VOTE?

I NOTICE THAT REPUBLICANS SQUEAKED IT TODAY.

THEY ONLY HAD ONE EXTRA VOTE. OBVIOUSLY THERE'S 20 REPUBLICANS

DIDN'T WANT TO VOTE FOR IT AND A LOT MORE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE NOT

VOTED FOR IT. YOU HAD DID YOU SEE IT AS A

POLITICAL MOVE TODAY? >> AS A DOCTOR, A LOT OF THEM

KNEW THIS WAS A BAD BILL THAT WAS GOING TO HURT PATIENTS AND

CONSTITUENTS. THERE WAS A LOT OF ARM TWISTING

GOING ON. THIS WAS A BAD VOTE.

AGAIN, IT'S GOING TO HURT A LOT OF PATIENTS.

>> WHEN YOU'RE DOWN ON THE FLOOR, CAN YOU TELL THE PRESSURE

ON REPUBLICANS TO GET UP TO THE 217?

>> YEAH, THEY DIDN'T HAVE THAT LOOK OF ENTHUSIASM ON THEIR

FACE, PARTICULARLY THROUGHOUT THIS WEEK AS YOU SAW THEM KIND

OF TWIST ARMS AND WHIP THE VOTE HERE.

SO, AGAIN, I THINK A LOT OF THEM KNOW THIS WAS A VERY DIFFICULT

VOTE THAT'S GOING TO HURT A LOT OF THEIR OWN CONSTITUENTS.

>> LET ME GO TO STEVE. STEVE, I UNDERSTAND YOU'VE GOT A

REALLY GOOD ANALYSIS OF WHO THE WINNERS AND LOSERS ARE TO PUT IT

BLUNTLY UNDER THIS BILL. >> I DON'T THINK THERE ARE A LOT

OF WINNERS. I THINK THERE ARE A FAIR NUMBER

OF LOSERS. FIRST OF ALL, LET'S GO BACK TO

THE ORIGINAL BILL, WHICH INCLUDED MASSIVE CUTS IN

MEDICAID, MASSIVE CUTS IN SUBSIDIES FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE

ABOVE THE MEDICAID LEVEL BUT NOT REALLY ABLE TO PAY FOR

THEMSELVES, AND THEN THE NEW BILL ADDED TO THAT THE ABILITY

OF STATES TO GET OUT OF THE TEN BASIC REQUIREMENTS AS WELL AS TO

GET OUT OF THE REQUIREMENT THAT INSURERS CHARGE PEOPLE WITH

PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS THE SAME AS PEOPLE WITHOUT THEM.

SO I CAN'T THINK OF MANY WINNERS.

THERE ARE A LOT OF LOSERS. >> HERE'S A CHART PUT OUT BY THE

CENTER FOR AMERICAN PROGRESS, A PROGRESSIVE THINK TANK.

IT SHOWS HOW MUCH MORE A YEAR SOME WITH CERTAIN

PRE-CONDITIONS, EXISTING CONDITIONS, MIGHT HAVE TO PAY

COMPARED TO A HEALTHY 40-YEAR-OLD PERSON.

FOR EXAMPLE, SOMEONE WITH METASTATIC CANCER WOULD PAY MORE

THAN $140,000 A YEAR. SOME WITH DEPRESSION WOULD PAY

AN EXTRA $8,500. SOMEONE WITH ASTHMA WOULD PAY

MORE THAN $4,000 MORE. I THINK DIABETES IS ABOUT

$5,000, WHICH MATTERS TO ME. THESE ARE REAL DIFFERENCES.

IN OTHER WORDS, THEY'VE BEEN THROWING THOSE PEOPLE INTO A

HIGH RISK POOL WHERE THEY'D HAVE TO PAY A LOT MORE.

>> YEAH, AND WE'VE TRIED HIGH RISK POOLS BEFORE AND THEY NEVER

WORK. WHAT ENDS UP HAPPENING IS FOLKS

CAN'T GET THE HEALTH CARE THEY NEED.

THEY END UP ON WAITING LISTS. HOW DO YOU TELL SOMEONE WITH

CANCER, OH, YOU'VE GOT TO GO ON A WAITING LIST?

THAT'S WHY WE TOOK THE APPROACH WE DID WITH THE AFFORDABLE CARE

ACT, GUARANTEEING COVERAGE. THIS IS GOING TO TAKE HEALTH

CARE AWAY OR MAKE IT UNAFFORDABLE FOR MILLIONS OF

AMERICANS. >> THIS IDEA THAT FOR

$8 BILLION -- IT SEEMS A LOT OF MONEY, BUT IT'S OVER FIVE YEARS,

WHICH IS $1.5 BILLION A YEAR. THEY SAY -- I THINK IT IS A

BAND-AID ON THIS BILL. SO A WEEK AGO OR TWO WEEKS AGO,

THIS BILL WOULD NEVER PASS. THEY PUT THE BAND-AID ON IT AND

SAID WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THIS SUBSIDY.

WE'RE GOING TO WRITE A CHECK FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO

COVER THOSE PEOPLE, BUT NOBODY BELIEVES THE $1.5 BILLION A YEAR

WILL COVER ALL THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY'S HEALTH INSURANCE

COSTS, MEDICINES, PILLS, DOCTORS, HOSPITALIZATION.

ALL OF THAT IS GOING TO BE COVERED FOR ABOUT $1.5 BILLION A

YEAR. NOBODY BELIEVES THAT.

>> I DON'T KNOW ANY HEALTH CARE EXPERT OR ECONOMIST THAT

BELIEVES THAT. THAT'S A DROP IN THE BUCKET FOR

WHAT'S NEEDED, AND I BET STEVE WOULD AGREE WITH THAT.

>> LET'S GO ALONG WITH THAT NUMBER BECAUSE IT LOOKED TO ME

AS A PALIATIVE AS A DOCTOR MIGHT SAY.

>> IT'S SUBMITTED IT WOULD COST ANYWHERE FROM $200 BILLION TO

$330 BILLION TO PROVIDE THESE HIGH-RISK POOLS THAT ARE

ADEQUATE TO COVER EVERYBODY. THE HOUSE BILL INCLUDED BEFORE

THE $8 BILLION, INCLUDED $130 BILLION TOWARD A VARIETY OF

THINGS, THANNING ONE OF THEM. THEN $8 BILLION WAS ADDED.

THE POINT IS THEY'RE UP TO $200 BILLION SHORT OF WHAT WOULD

BE NEEDED TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY IN THE HIGH-RISK CATEGORY WITH

THE PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS GOT COVERAGE.

SO THE $8 BILLION, AS YOU SURMISED, IS A COMPLETE DROP IN

THE BUCKET. >> I COULD TELL THAT BECAUSE I

SAW THE ANALYSIS OF WHAT HAD BEEN SPENT BEFORE TO COVER THESE

HIGH RISK PATIENTS. THE BILL IS SURE TO FACE A

TOUGHER CHALLENGE WHEN IT HEADS TO THE SENATE.

SENATOR LINDSEY GRAHAM TWEETED TODAY, A BILL, FINALIZED

YESTERDAY, HAS NOT BEEN SCORED. AMENDMENTS NOT ALLOWED.

THREE HOURS FINAL DEBATE. SHOULD BE VIEWED WITH CAUTION.

HERE'S SENATOR BOB CORKER THIS MORNING.

>> IS THERE ANY CHANCE IF IT PASSES THE HOUSE TODAY, IS THERE

ANY CHANCE FOR AN UP OR DOWN VOTE IN THE SENATE ON THE BILL

AS WRITTEN TO GET IT QUICKLY PASSED AND MOVE QUICKLY PAST THE

ISSUE FOR REPUBLICANS? >> NO.

>> ZERO? >> IT'S JUST THAT'S NOT THE WAY

IT'S GOING TO WORK. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO WANT TO

IMPROVE IT. I DON'T SEE ANY WAY THAT IT GOES

BACK IN THE FORM THAT IT COMES. >> WELL, YOU KNOW, CONGRESSMAN,

HERE'S THE PROBLEM IF YOU'RE A REPUBLICAN AT THE WHITE HOUSE,

ONE OF THESE LOBBYISTS TRYING TO GET THIS THROUGH.

YOU KNOW YOU PASSED THIS WITH ONE VOTE TO SPEAR.

YOU HAD TO BEG THE FREEDOM CAUCUS PEOPLE.

YOU HAD TO TAKE THE MODERATE REPUBLICANS FROM A LOT OF

VULNERABLE SEATS IN PENNSYLVANIA LIKE BARLETTA, WHO WAS GOING TO

RUN AGAINST BOB CASEY FOR THE SENATE.

A LOT OF THESE GUYS FACE REAL PROBLEMS, SO YOU SQUEEZE THEM.

NOW HAVING SAID TO THEM, THIS IS AS BAD AS IT'S GOING TO GET, YOU

TAKE IT OVER TO THE SENATE. THE SENATE IS MUCH LESS RIGHT

WING. THE BILL COMES B
