Giving up smoking for the new year - Duration: 2:31.
We're now exactly three days into 2017, and three days - that's all it takes for your
new year's resolution to go down the drain.
It's a saying familiar to many Koreans.
One of the most popular resolutions worldwide include kicking the horrible habit of smoking.
But, surveys show just one in five smokers who've pledged to kick the habit actually
do so within a year.
How do you help it?
Lee Unshin has this story.
The new year is a time for making resolutions.
But whether it's to make a new habit or kick an old one, the toughest part of any resolution
is sticking to it for the long term.
Kim Young-gi, is struggling with just that.
Kim's been using tobacco for almost 35 years... and yet he still hopes to give it up for the
year 2017.
"I go through about 10 cigarettes a day.
I tried to quit numerous times.
I tried patches and herbal remedies, but none of those worked.
But every January, I say this is going to be the year I'm really going to quit."
Kim's wish for the new year is a common one.
In December, online sales of stop-smoking aids like nicotine patches and gum... soared
about 30-percent from the month before.
To help those who want to be tobacco-free... the government has taken several measures,
such as nearly doubling the price of cigarettes two years ago... and making tobacco companies
put graphic images on the packaging to warn people of the health risks of smoking -- those
are set to appear later this month.
But the campaign against smoking has so far not been enough to get Kim to go cold turkey.
So how can someone like Kim succeed after years of trying in vain?
Doctors suggest seeking help from experts.
"Doctors see smoking as a condition; an addiction to nicotine.
While those quit-kits, may work for light smokers, some heavy, long-time smokers, could
use additional help."
Like medication to reduce cravings for tobacco, or counseling services available for free
at health centers throughout the country.
And a moment of weakness here or there doesn't mean you've failed.
"One slip up, is not an excuse to throw away your resolution.
First try cutting back on smoking, and then aim for going cold turkey."
And, letting friends, family and coworkers know what you're working towards will help
you hold on to your determination.
After all... it might be worth giving it your best... so this resolution does NOT become
a yearly tradition.

They'll ask you to log in with your account.
Once you're logged in you'll get a list

many impressions does that query get and
click-through rate what's the number of
people searching for that term who are
clicking through to your site and what
position your site is for that term so
let's use an example so here's a quarry
marketing for developers in the last 90
days had 654 impressions the
click-through rate is thirty-seven

things but if we search for marketing
for developers right now you can see
that in this case number one means that
the number one search result on that
page so this is a great way for you to
see how are people finding my website
what search terms are they using where
am I ranking really well and where do i
need to improve you can also see which
pages are getting the most impressions
in search results so in my case it is my
root domain the next one is startup
marketing checklist lots of impressions
although not very many clicks to that
page they're obviously looking for
something else or I'm not giving them
the result that they want
there's also a lot of potential traffic
for this webcam review i had on the site
but again not a lot of clicks so perhaps
that's something i could look to improve
you can also filter by country so in my
case the United States is where I get
most of my clicks from and with my
impressions i get higher click-through
rates from people in the united kingdom
in Canada and then I can also look at
devices so in this case I'm higher on
mobile search results both for mobile
and tablet and my click-through rate is
higher on mobile devices i will delve
into search analytics in more detail
next week but let me show you a few more
things
another thing that might be interesting
to you is to see who is linking to your
site so what websites are linking to you
the most and you can actually download a
table of the latest links as a CSV or in
Google Docs and this is going to give
you a list of the exact pages that are
linking to your website so for example
i'm interested in who's listening to me
on pinterest let's go grab that URL and
take a look here because they all look
this is a Pinterest board of startup
books that have linked to my site so
that's interesting to be able to see
which websites are linking to you
sometimes you can reach out to those
folks sometimes you can maybe leave a
comment on the Pinterest boards that are
linking to you the other thing is which
is your most link to content so
naturally your root domain is going to
be the most popular but in this case get
more visitors is the next most popular
and I can see ok who is linking to this
website and in this case that's a site
called the startup pitch dot-com but I
can also see that looks like folks were
reading that on nuzzle and also it was
linked to from this reddit thread
another area you might want to look at
from time to time is under crawl crawl
errors and it will let you know if
there's any site errors and if there's
any URL errors in this case it looks
like I've got a couple landing pages
that are no longer on the site that i
need to fix so one is this page here it
looks like i used to have slides on this
page and I don't anymore so that's
something i should fix right away and
the other one that's interesting is this
fetch as Google now again I'm going to
show you this in more detail next week
but i found this is a way to get Google
to index your pages faster so let me
show you what I mean I'm gonna go crazy
dismissing landing page I'm going to
come back and then i'll show you how i
would submit it using search console
alright I've just recreated this page
and now i want to manually submit to
google so i'm going to go back to fetch
as Google paste in the the landing page
here click fetch and render and this is
going to grind away for a second and
once it's done processing this little
button here pops up request indexing and
i found when you go through this process
google will index this site sometimes
almost immediately look at that I just
searched for microcon slides market for
developers and there is and there is the
post i just created it's already showing
up in search results so really quick way
to get google to fetch any new pages
that you create and have them show up in
the index right away
alright so that's a brief overview of
setting up search console and some
things you can do with it

Blind Person's Favorite Sense? / Give Up A Sense For Sight? - Duration: 5:25.
Okay, here we go. Let's do it. [swoosh]
[music plays] Here's a question.
Out of all the senses available to you, what is your favorite sense?
I'm going to say my hearing. Listen, I like to touch things,
I love to smell things and taste things as well,
but, man, hearing is just... because it's music.
And it's also people's voices.
It's people's accents. I love that. I just love how people be.
I love to hear a person smile. I love to hear people
laugh and I think my hearing delivers something
that none of the other senses can bring me. That's what really helps me
to get to know a person is by the way that they,
you know, how they talk. I would never be able to understand that
without my ears. It wouldn't be the same.
[music plays]
What smell does for me and I think it does for a lot of people is trigger
memories. I mean, one of the most common things is the
smell of charcoal on a grill. People love that
smell and they always talk about it. And it's a great one.
It really is, but I can't get to know
somebody from just by sense of smell.
Right? I can't hear the --- I can't sense the joy in them.
I can't tell what kind of mood somebody's in by the way that they smell.
You know what I mean. I can only tell whether or not
they've been to the gym. [laughs]

You know what? I don't think touch offers more than hearing.
Listen, touch is great. I can feel a smile.
I can feel the warmth of a human.
I can feel the clothing that they wear.
But again I can't get a sense
of somebody's mood from... just by touching them.
I can't get a sense of how somebody's day was by touching them.
You know, it's all about that communication.
[music continues] The other senses are great,
but I can't get from those senses what I get
from my ears and that's why hearing is my favorite.
The voice is so powerful. It does so many things.
You know, that's why texting is so difficult. You get a text
from somebody and they say some thing to you and you're like,
"wait, what does that mean?" But if you heard them say that thing
it would make all the sense in the world. You know, and then there's
other things that aren't just human things. I can hear music.
You know, I can hear Miles Davis play or Prince
or Charlie Parker or Jaco Pastorius, you know.
Or Yo-Yo Ma. There's all sorts of things to listen to.
And there's things that are, you know,
maybe not so pleasant to listen to as well. You know, like the sound
of construction. Like a lawnmower or something.
But still, I need those things.
Especially when I'm walking around. I really do depend on my hearing more
than any of the other senses. It's so important.
And I'm sorry about the other --- I'm sorry
smell, touch, and taste. I really am. But hearing's go you beat.
Why am I apologizing to senses?
What's wrong with me? It's not like they can hear me.
[music plays] Another question that comes up...
If you could trade one of your other senses to get sight,
would you do it?
Whew. Um...
This is difficult. That's tough
because smell and taste are so connected. You're nose and your throat are very connected.
So you lose one, you really lose two.
But I'll say I'll give up those two to see. Those are the two I think
I could do without to see. I could live without smelling the lilacs in the Spring
or smelling somebody's nice perfume or
tasting a nice meal, you know, a nice piece of steak
or a Thanksgiving dinner. Because the other ones
like touching - no way. Because that would mean
my whole body, right? Because we touch with our entire bodies,
don't we? So I would have to live without that. No, I couldn't do that.
And hearing - no, there's no way
I'm living without hearing so... I'll trade two for one.
Smell and taste for sight. There's your trade.
I'd make that deal. Right now.
