Hey everybody happy new year hope everybody
enjoyed the holidays. So, the last like
two to three days obviously after January
first a ton of news coming out a lot
of press releases things that the news
sources were kind of holding off to the
beginning of the year but one of the things that
came out that I was kinda like following
is the forbes 30 under 30 list i think i
wrote about this about three or four
years ago in the Niche Movement blog but
this is such a great list for especially
college students but anybody looking to
make a career transition or work in a
different company.
The first thing I do is go through and
look at obviously who's on the list, what
sectors they are in: finance, media, product
development, etc., tech, and then what I
like to do is dig a little bit to
figure out you know are they have
founder or do they work for a big
company like Goldman Sachs what do they
do, where they work, because most likely
if you're making a force 30 under 30 list
you're probably hustling hustling you're
probably thriving and feel challenged all
the things we talk about at The
Niche Movement so they probably love their
job! And so I immediately want to find if you want to find
out what are they doing, where they work.
But here's my two, three, four pieces of
advice to college students or anybody in
the early twenties looking to make
career transition. First thing I would
do is do what I did and go through and
read the entire list and research. Go
deep. Find out who they are, where the they went to
school, how they got there, how long they've been
working there,
but also research the company. Maybe a lot
of them on there i think about half of
them are founders of some type of
company so find out what they did to
find that come to to create that company
and how old they are, where the company is
and what they do.
The second thing is then follow them in
or their company on social media.
The thing that I like to recommend is
make a private twitter list so that way we could
follow all 30 put them on a Twitter list
I'm sure pretty much ninety percent of
them have a Twitter account and you can
follow them on a daily basis. Find out
what type of news articles they are sharing
how and where they're engaging with
their community and what they have to
say because you
no you never know you might be able to chime into a
tweet or after 3-4 months of building some
type of relationship with them you might
be able to tweet them back and create some
type of dialogue you never know. Next
thing we do is follow their company on
social media. In the short term though it
wouldn't hurt if there's about 4-5 that
you really would love to aspire to be or
admire or love to work for their company it
wouldn't hurt to just shoot them a tweet,
an Instagram message, find their email
and just say "Hey congratulations!" Tom or
Becky or whoever on making the forbes 30
under 30 list. The next thing I would do
is if you are a college student I would
go deep, find their email address
and i would figure out a way to get in
touch with them. Hey, I'm a college
student I would love an informational
interview
do you have your 15 minutes I'd love to
figure out how you got on this list or
I'm aspiring to get on this list someday
I'd love 15 minutes of your time. Reach
to them and ask them for informal
interview. The next thing to just realize
is the totem pole effect is these young
individuals just got put on this list
25-26, 30 years old they're gonna be
inundated with more press inquiries a
lot more traffic what I'm suggesting you
do they're gonna be getting pinged more
left and right so their noise of trying
to break through just went up tenfold so
realize the total effect is you might
need to go a step lower who's the
co-founder, who is the VP, who is
someone that works underneath them as
a junior graphic designer
whatever it might be don't be afraid to
go two or three tiers below and get in
touch with them.
Same thing informal interview, follow
them on Twitter, whatever it might be but
this is a great way to figure out you
here are 30 new individuals 30 new companies
that you potentially may love to work
for or find your niche.
That's my tip for early 2017, hope you
guys have an excellent excellent year
more to come both from my content and
Niche Movement. Take care.
