So we moved again, into a bigger apartment.
We have 2 floors, a bedroom quite separated from the computer area, and a TV in both the
bedroom and the living room, along with a lot of digital media.
Movies, TV shows, documentaries, video archives, and the random nerdy educational videos - we
have a lot that we need to be able to stream throughout the house.
This is where Plex comes in.
I'm quite fond of using physical media whenever possible, but the convenience of streaming
our media everywhere right from my always-on server just can't be beat.
This is something that just about anyone can set up, so let's walk through setting up
your own Plex media server or library.
You don't actually need to use it as a server - if you just have one PC, or a basic computer
and network setup, Plex is also a great tool for just organizing your media to playback,
as well.
You will need: A computer - preferably a desktop or laptop,
and if you plan on doing multiple streams at once to different devices, you will need
a powerful PC with a quad core or higher processor Digital media files
Plex software - which is free, though the affordable Plex Pass offers great additional
features
To start, download the Plex Media Server installer from their website.
Run it and install the software - once done, it should place a Plex icon in your system
tray.
If not, you may need to restart your PC after installing.
Right-click that icon and hit "Open Plex."This will open the web UI for the software.
Sign up for a Plex account, or sign-in to your account if you have one.
Next you need to name your Plex library and make a potentially important decision: Do
you want your Plex library available outside of your home?
This checkbox at the bottom is important, as it affects your network configuration.
Unless you really think you'll use it outside your home - which may be impossible, depending
on your internet upload speed - then uncheck this box.
It's a security thing.
Next, you want to set up various Libraries for your media.
This divides up the type of content you want to stream - which helps with organization,
acquiring metadata (such as titles and episode numbers) and so on.
Click "Add library" and locate your different types of media.
Pretty straightforward.
The "Add Folders" section is where you tell it the location of your media files so
the app can automatically update and start putting your library together.
The status of Plex processing your media files pops up at the bottom of your screen.
Once you've added your appropriate libraries, hit Done, and give it time to load everything
- you're good to go.
Pick a video, photo, or music file and enjoy!
Plex lets you choose your streaming file quality, the language on multiple language files such
as anime, and even subtitles if provided!
You can also cast to Chromecast or other devices.
The library is extremely helpful and intuitive.
Also, be sure to download Plex apps on your other devices to stream your media.
These are the basics of setting up a Plex Media Server.
We'll go into some more advanced settings you can configure in a future video, but for
now, enjoy your content!
