Manchester United fans got a glimpse of what could have been as Jose Mourinho went on a scouting trip alongside the man he wanted to overhaul the club's recruitment, Lille chief Luis Campos
The axed Portuguese coach, who has made several appearances as a pundit on TV since leaving Old Trafford, was in France to watch Lille take on Montpellier on Sunday
Mourinho is believed to be carefully weighing up his options before deciding his next managerial move, having been linked with both Real Madrid and Inter
In previous spells out of a job, Mourinho has often watched future targets in action – which makes his trip to the Stade Pierre Mauroy all the more intriguing
A high-flying Lille side have a number of exciting players in their ranks, particularly Nicolas Pepe – who has 16 goals and eight assists in Ligue 1 this season already – and striker Rafael Leao
Mourinho was watching the game alongside Lille sporting director and friend Luis Campos, who has overseen the club's brilliant recruitment of players
The pair worked together at Real Madrid, where Campos was chief scout, and Mourinho had campaigned for his countryman to head up the recruitment team at United after becoming disillusioned with Ed Woodward's failure to identify and land key targets
United are still believed to be interested in bringing in a sporting director, having been linked with Roma's Monchi and RB Leipzig's Paul Mitchell, though Campos is no longer in the running
Before Mourinho landed the United job, he watched both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ivan Perisic play for Dortmund and Inter respectively before trying to sign them for United
He'll already know all about Portuguese teenager Leao, though the forward – who was subbed off in Sunday's goalless draw with Mourinho watching on – appears reluctant to leave Lille, saying: 'What's the use of being in a big club if I do not play?'
