[Bubbers]: At the 2019 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto it's clear you've got
more choices than ever. And not just, "Do I go for massaging seats or mood lighting?"
[Trottier]: Right, and you can choose the kind of power you want. Gasoline, electric
or a combination of two: hybrid.
And the question everybody always asks is, well, is it worth it?
Okay, so the answer has to do with CO2 and climate change but for
most people it understandably just comes down to cost.
Today we're gonna look at two options from opposite ends of the price spectrum.
And we're also going to use information from Natural Resources Canada to help us out.
Ya, get ready for some math.
This is the all-new 2019 Toyota RAV4. The hybrid model actually has more power
but it also costs more. $32,000 versus $30,000 for the all-wheel
drive gas model. Your regular car only has a gasoline engine. A hybrid, however,
has a gasoline internal engine as well as an electric motor powered by its onboard battery.
So in this case, annual fuel costs for the hybrid all-wheel drive is $1,224 per year.
For the gas all-wheel drive it's $1,693.
So after just three years the hybrid is actually cheaper. Ya, although keep in mind
if you drive less than 20,000 kilometers a year it'll take longer to recoup that cost.
At the higher end of the price spectrum is this: Porsche's all-new Cayenne.
Now, the base model is $75,000 but it only has 335 horsepower.
The new plug-in e-hybrid model costs $91,000 and has 455 horsepower.
So a more fair comparison for this is the gas only Cayenne S, which costs $92,000 and has 434 horsepower.
Do you follow all those numbers?
Unlike a standard gasoline engine which has to build power gradually,
an electric motor can reach maximum torque almost immediately.
Fully recharged this vehicle can travel for 44 kilometers using only the electric motor.
After that it will use the internal combustion engine for its primary
motivation and to charge the batteries.
So the Cayenne S costs $2,761a year in fuel according EnerGuide. They don't actually have annual
fuel cost estimates for the hybrid yet, but you don't need them, because the
hybrid is actually cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, and accelerates faster
off the line. So it's a no-brainer: Get the hybrid.
So if I win the lotto tomorrow I'm definitely getting the plug-in Porsche.
Wow, yeah I never thought I'd hear you say that, plug-in Porsche? But, you know what?
The numbers don't lie.
