Youtube daily MRE Feb 14 2019

hey there, and welcome back to 'tastes seoul good'. today we are checking out Korean military

meals.

Let's go! alright, so today i'm going test out two different

flavors of Korean MRE's - Meals Ready to Eat.

They both require a little bit of preparation.

neither of these are very authentic.

i ordered them online.

this one is more classic and more old school.

this one is apparently the newer version.

so this one is really cool! because it has a self-heating element to it.

so we can cook it all in this box and then enjoy it.

so let's go ahead and take a look at these and see how they taste.

so first off i'm going to try this one.

this is the more traditional type of MRE. this comes in a plastic bag. and i'm going

to take off this top part and there is a seal underneath that.

so once i do that, i can see a few different things.

so there are a few packages.

this one is sesame oil.

i'm just going to put it to the side. and also there is a package of soup mix.

i'm going to also put this to the side.

inside, it looks like there is little pieces of rice and maybe some vegetables and piece

of beef.

i've boiled 250 ml of water.

i'm just going to pour it in and seal it shut.

then i'm going to let this cook for 7 or 8 minutes, and then we'll come back to it.

alright, so it's been about 8 minutes, so my bibimbap should be ready.

so let me open it up.

now i'm going to add the other ingredients.

first i've got the sesame oil.

next is the soup mix.

it smells really good.

it smells like ramen plus sesame oil.

it smells really fragrant.

now i'm just going to stir this up.

so let's take a look at it.

i've put it in a separate dish so you can see it.

it smells really good and it looks really good.

so i'm curious.

i've heard from my Korean friends that ARMY food isn't really good, so I'm not really

confident.

but here we go.

mmmm. oh, it's not as bad as i expected.

the rice is instant, so it has a little bit of a different texture.

the carrots are still pretty crunchy.

the flavor is pretty good.

it's got a little bit of spice.

it tastes like shin ramyeon.

but it is quite flavorful.

i can taste the cabbage, and onion.

the portion of this is pretty big.

i think what is most interesting to me about this is how crispy and crunchy the vegetables

are.

it really tastes fresh! i'm not going to lie. this is actually pretty decent! i wasn't expecting

it to be this good.

this is something i would actually eat if i was just hungry and didn't feel like cooking.

the portion is big and the flavor is good.

it's easier to cook this than it is ramen.

i also think that this is the type of meal that would be really good if i was in the

Army and i was doing a lot of physical things, and maybe it was winter time, and i needed

something to keep up my energy.

this is something that would stick with me all day.

this is the type of meal that would to that because there are so many carbs and vegetables.

this is really good.

but it is a big portion and I have another MRE to eat, so i'm going to stop here and

check out the next one! so next up i'm going to try this one.

this is the dalk galbi deop bap. this is stir fried chicken with rice and there is fried

kimchi in here.

so it should be really delicious.

this one is extra cool because it has a self-heating pack in there.

there's a few different steps to cook this.

i'm going to start by opening it.

now i'm going to do the second step.

there is a string.

i'm going to pull the string about 15 centimeters.

the heating has started.

oh - i can already see the steam coming out of it.

i can ihear it! it sounds like it is boiling in there.

oh wow - this is super cooL! it's going to take about 10 minutes, and after that i'm

going to lay it on its side and let it cook for another 10 minutes.

in total - it will take 20 minutes.

oh wow, guys! look at all that steam! this is super cooL! wow. i'm super excited.

i don't know if you can see me! can you see me?alright - so it's been 20 minutes.

it's still steaming a little bit.

but it sounds like it's stopped cooking.

so i'm going to go ahead and open this up and we're going to try it out.

oh, HOT! you want to be careful when you do this because it's going to be very hot! we

have a few different pieces here.

we have a tray and a spork - the best utensil ever, right! It is half spoon, half fork. we

have our fried kimchi. this is the sauce part.

the rice.

so this says rice with vegetables.

so i have three different packages.

i'm going to plate them up on my little plate here and then we will test them out.

here is my completed meal! i've stirred everything up.

the sauce looks like it has pieces of carrots and potatoes in it.

this looks like it has some red pepper flakes in it.

i'm really curious to try it out.

i've got my fried kimchi here.

this looks like a complete meal.

here we go! uh... let's get a piece of the chicken.

let's see how that tastes.

first of all, i can say it's really warm.

the rice is mushy.

the sauce itself tastes really instant.

it tastes like canned food.

to me, it doesn't taste like dalk galbi that i'm used to.

it's not bad.

but it's not like the original thing.

it's very filling.

it's very hearty.

there's many different texture in it.

the chicken is a nice sized piece of chicken.

it's a little dry.

it does have a lot of flavor though.

it's pretty salty.

it's an interesting flavor. to me it almost tastes like a spaghetti sauce.

i'm going to try a little piece of this kimchi.

let's see how that tastes.

oh, that kimchi is really sour! this is a fried kimchi.

the longer it ages, the more sour it gets.

it's hard to eat this.

let's try the kimchi with the rice.

let's see if that helps it.

eh, not bad.

alright - so i just checked out 2 different kinds of Korean MREs. the second one is a

lot more convenient and it's really cool because you just lift that string and it heats up.

but the first one tastes much better, even though you do have to get the water and mix

it all together.

however, if i had to choose, i would choose the bibimbap because i think it tastes a lot

better.

alright - i'm going to end this video here.
