Leaf Life Lab - Duration: 7:18.
Welcome to the Leaf Life Lab!
Here we are going to investigate a role of light in producing the oxygen during the process
of photosynthesis.
For this experiment we are going to need a usual transparent glass, a little bit of water,
tap water will do well, a smallest drop of liquid soap, sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3),
also known as baking soda, the leaves of course, in this particular case we will use spinach,
the fresher, the better, we have already prepared small pieces; also we are going to need a
glass stick to mix soap and water, a spoon, a syringe and a source of light.
Some powerful source of light, well, the best option of course is a sun, but in case of
cloudy weather we can use a flashlight for example, but not LED, because the wavelenght
of light produced by LED is not the same that plants use in photosynthesis.
The first step is to pour water into the glass.
The usual tap water, not mineral nor carbonated, just nice water.
So, then we will add some sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) to the glass and we do this in order
to produce the source of carbon dioxide (CO2) for our leaves.
So mix it a little bit, so it will dissolve there.
And now we have to decrease a surface tension of water, so leaves can drown.
For this purpose we use soap, just a tiny drop, and mix just a little bit, we do not
need any bubbles there, just mix a little bit.
Now we will take small pieces of the leaves, the ones that we prepared, like a few of them
– five, four, something like that, and place them into the syringe.
Very good.
And now we will fill the syringe with water from our glass.
We do not need much, yeah, that is very good.
So push the pump a little bit.
And now we have to get rid of all the bubbles of the gas inside the syringe.
So for this we have to cover the hole on the top of the syringe and pull the pump down.
So, it decreases the pressure inside the syringe, so all the gas goes out.
And when all the pieces of leaves are down on the bottom of the syringe, it means that the gas,
the oxygen, is out.
It may need a few repeats, but you will see it when the leaves are down on the bottom.
So now, as you can see, they are down, they are on the bottom, so we can pour everything from the syringe
back to the glass.
And now our leaves are drowning to the bottom of our glass.
The next step is the most difficult step of our experiment – it is the waiting.
We will need a few minutes to leaves to get the oxygen from the air and float back to
the surface.
But for this we are going to need the light.
We do not have any sunlight here unfortunately, so we are going to use the flashlight.
It may take some time as I already told, but it is really worth waiting.
Fortunately we have prepared the other glass, so you do not have to wait with us.
The glass was standing outside of the window and the leaves started rising up to the surface
and one has already reached it, which means that it has enough oxygen to float, because
the density of oxygen is way lower than the density of water of course.
So the experiment is succesfully over.
Or is it actually?
Because you know, it is just a base, we just gave you the start.
You can improve it the way you want.
You can put your glass to the dark place and observe what will happen.
You can put different glasses under the different light sources and check it out, which one
works better.
It is up to you.
So, what is the role of light in photosynthesis?
Can you answer right now?

Do you sleep? - Good Talk about life - Duration: 4:39.
I want to talk about sleep. We had a discussion yesterday me and my friend
Joakim who sits right next to me here at work. Yes I'm at work and it's 7:30
in the morning. We normally start at 9:00 and the reason why I'm here early
is that my wife has the early shift in the morning when she normally has the late shift.
Which means that she goes to work when I get off work which means
that we stay up longer because she don't have to go to work in the morning but I do.
I have a sleeping pattern which means that I can sleep for six hours
or five and a half hours because we need to do, you know, the Netflix and stuff.
So this resulted in us going to bed early last night because she was
gonna get up early and then I woke up after my normal six hours which was
around 6:00. I woke up, I went and did a raid, Pokemon Go raid as you do in the morning.
And had my breakfast then I went to work
because I thought, if I go to work early I can maybe go a little earlier from work.
But also I like the fact that you come here, either you're the first one here,
which means you get to greet everybody welcome to my humble abode where I
rule alone until you come. Or there's maybe only one person here and you get
to sit down and just have a more personal chat with that person.
I mean normally creatively I am a night person. I stay up late, that's when I do the most
creative stuff but in a way I am sort of not blessed, but I am I am equipped with
the fact that I can be both a late-nighter and an early morning person.
I mean I used to have a warehouse work we started at 3 in the morning.
And sure, we got off work at 12:00, at noon but you didn't go to bed at midnight if
you know what I mean. You missed all the primetime shows before everything was
you know, you can watch it whenever you want streaming. But I want to
start a discussion or have a discussion
around sleep patterns and you asking you question. How many hours a night do you sleep?
Is it important for you to go to bed before midnight? Because people often
say that the hours before midnight, that's the hours that really count.
Are you a light sleeper? Are you a snoozer? I am personally,
I am not a snoozer. I never snooze. I feel like I'm cheating myself or something.
When that thing rings I turn it off within a second, mostly because I don't
want to wake my wife up. But also yeah it's just like discipline. I go up, I just
don't think about it. I just go up and most often when I've set the alarm to
the same time. I wake up like a minute before and I turn the alarm off so it
won't sound at all, and I think it was yesterday or the day before I actually,
like I woke up and I reached down because the phone is on the side of the
bed on the floor. And as I was reaching down that's when the alarm went off and
I'm like yeah. I'm like super timer. I should boil eggs based on my intuition.
I shouldn't. My little brother, he was gonna do like fast macaroni three
minutes and I told him; do you do have the time and he was like I know when it's done.
A lot of ketchup was needed for that meal. So let me know, I mean
sleep is an important part of keeping focus and keeping yourself mentally and
physically stable throughout the day for the tasks that you need to do.
And one last note, unlike my friend Joakim, I don't have a problem going to bed.
I mean falling asleep, I mean obviously there are some nights when I'm like
mm-hmm mostly when I'm anticipating something,
like the day before Christmas. Not anymore but stuff like that, when I'm really
excited, because then I lay there thinking there are seven hours before I
can get up and do all the fun stuff. So even if I go to bed and fall asleep it's
still seven hours cause that's how I think.
So let me know. Talk about how you sleep? Who you sleep with is not important,
we'll do that in another video but how do you sleep and how do
you experience this thing, this necessary thing we call sleep? Good talk.

British businessman fears Novichok-style Russian attempt on his life - Duration: 2:27.
Acritic of Vladimir Putin says he fears he could be next on the Kremlin's hitlist and accused British intelligence firms of spying on him for the Russian regime
Bill Browder has led criticism of the Russian leader after an investment fund he ran in Moscow was seized and he was kicked out of the country following his work exposing corruption
After Britain accused Russia of carrying out the Novichok attack on former spy Sergei Skripal earlier this year, Mr Browder says he fears he could be next
The 54-year-old businessman told The Daily Mirror: 'They are pursuing every way of getting to me
The most extreme way would be Novichok on my door handle.'Or one that would cause the least consequences is to find a friendly country to extradite me to Russia, where they would torture me, have a show trial and then murder me, telling everyone I died of natural causes
' Browder also used the interview to accuse private British intelligence firms of spying on him for the Kremlin
He said the companies, who often employ retired MI5 and MI6 agents, have been producing reports on his 'whereabouts, activities and background' for Russian money
Browder intends to make the same claims when he goes before a parliamentary committee next month, the Mirror reported
Earlier this summer, Mr Browder told The Mail On Sunday how he was nearly 'kidnapped' by Putin's men during a trip to Spain
Mr Browder set up Hermitage Capital Management in Russia in 1996, when the country's markets were opening up to capitalist investment following the fall of Communism
He was once Russia's biggest foreign investor and earned hundreds of millions of pounds from his funds
But he fell foul of the Kremlin in 2005 and was black listed from Russia, while many of his assets were seized
His Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, who helped Browder's investigation into corruption in Russia, was jailed, beaten and died in custody
He gave his name to the Magnitsky Act, a US move to make life more difficult for corrupt Russian officials
