Hello, today we are going to talk about the female writer Carmen Conde.
Carmen was born in Cartagena on the 15th of August, 1907. She was a poet, prose writer, essayist,
dramatist, teacher and she was the first woman
in the Royal Spanish Academy.
When she was 20 years old, she meets the poet Antonio Oliver Belmás with whom she would marry in 1931.
He will support her career and they will create the first
Popular University of Cartagena. She had friendship with the most important literature authors:
Miguel Hernández, Gabriela Mistral and Juan Ramón Jiménez,
among others. Conde, she was one of the main poets of
the Generation of 27, she wrote a lot of literature.
Her main topics are love, eroticism, sensuality, feminine body
and the God experience. I talk today about her because on the last
15th of August I heard that she became the first woman in the
Royal Spanish Academy after 264 years of its foundation and I saw a clear
example of the difficulties that women have had to access
relevant spaces in society. Since 1979 until this 2018 only
11 members have been women. If we look to the past,
three times they have rejected
Emilia Pardo Bazán with the excuse of "the ladies can't be part of
this institute", and before the Galician writer, the Cuban Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda,
she had tried to enter without success.
José Zorrilla said: "the woman who writes is a
error of nature". Opposition to that the writer Juan Valera joined,
he said: " the worst will be the candidates
that would come later, we would have Carolina Coronado,
Baroness of Wilson, Mrs Pilar Sinués and Mrs Robustiana Armiño
and the Academy would become a coven."
The democracy had just begun and the mistake had to be corrected
that persisted for so many years. Then they presented three female candidates
because Miguel Mihura died and couldn't enter the Academy.
The proposals were: Rosa Chacel, Carmen Guirado
and Carmen Conde. Finally, the third one
will occupy the K seat and she was the first academic woman, because sometimes,
María Isidra de Guzmán is mentioned as the first academic woman is not like that.
María Isidra de Guzmán just went to the Academy to read her letter
when she was named honorary member and she never came back.
Carmen Conde titled her speech of income in the RAE "Poetry
before time and immortality" she began with these words: Academic
gentlemen, first of all, thank you for your generosity to
choosing me to ocuppy a place, secularly, it wasn't granted to any of our
great female writers already disappeared. Allow me also to manifest my
homage, admiration and respect to their works.
Your righteous decision puts an end to an unfair and old literary discrimination."
And if we've mentioned two writers who didn't see well the
inclusion of the female writers in the Royal Spanish Academy, Carmen Conde quotes
Nicasio Gallego, among others authors, as vindicator of
necessity, recognition and visibility of the female writers.
Now I'm going to read two poems from the book "From never":
There is the house, yes, indeed, but her content isn't ... I look for
the presence, I hear the voice, and the house is empty ... How to replace it from her soul, how
to give back to her what she lost?? A house without light, a mist spreading throughout. The
house was a flower, the house was more than a garden: it was life.
The life that doesn't has when I come and I'm looking for you, the absent, helpless. Everything goes on
same and it isn't the same. Everything is living and it's a lie. The house that without you
isn't the house and I'm like you: I'm absent.
The love, I love you, water is to have in the hands that refreshes and slips.
Is to summon the impossible to what you never have, because the water is diluted...
I would like to love you more than to fire and more to water they never consumed. How much
I want to love you and I don't know how I love you being you, water that escapes.
Carmen Conde, was and is a great voice of Spanish literature and with her
the misogyny in the Real Academy began to stop,
although there's still a lot to do, because in 2018 of 46 seats only 8 are
occupied by women. Thank you very much for watching the video and see you
next week.
