welcome back now more on a very important diplomatic victory for the
Trump administration today and history in the making the Secretary of State
Mike Pompeo on his way home from North Korea he has the planning in place for a
trump Kim summit the president announced States saying the details will be
announced very soon secretary Pompey also has with him three
Americans who have been detained in North Korean prisons they were released
today as a sign of goodwill just a short time ago after a cabinet meeting at the
White House the president out of states celebrating and giving us the little
details about what's to come people never thought a thing like this could
happen it can people never thought you avoid you have a situation where we're
having serious and positive communication with North Korea and we
are what happens who knows we have a chance at something really great for the
world and great for North Korea and great for everyone so I want to thank
you all for being here and we will see you at two o'clock in the morning
it's hard to hear the question from ABC's Jonathan call but he asked the
president the summit planning was done the president said he would announce it
in three days and then John asked him would it be at the Demilitarized Zone
where you did see the historic South Korean North Korean meeting just a week
or so ago the president saying he will not be there but but this meeting is on
there's been a lot of questions it could still collapse there were a lot of
questions about would North Korea show enough to convince the White House it
was worth giving Kim jong-un what is a giant propaganda gift a meeting with the
President of the United States of America wherever it is in the world that
is what kim jeong-hoon wants credibility on the global stage the trump
administration would argue now we have three Americans that are coming home
it's been a long time since they tested a missile the u.s. the South Korean
forces conducted military exercises and not a peep from the north so the
president says good will let's test it again you have to give props to the
administration for the freedom of these Americans that does not mean Kim Jong
Un's gonna come to the table and say now I'm willing to give up my nukes that's
right and the question is whether or not the administration is being cleared I'd
enough about what exactly that propaganda victory would mean to Kim and
whether or not they're going to get any actual real concessions and whether Kim
really is different than his father on these questions there's a lot that
indicates that he is or he feels now he must act differently and that he does
need to engage there's also a lot going on behind the scenes with regard to
China that we don't quite know about but I think this is this is the culmination
at this point of the administration's policy on North Korea that they've been
more consistent than pretty much any foreign policy or any domestic policy
for that matter on they've been thinking about this really from the very
beginning and and and I think they're there this wait-and-see strategy is
really the only thing they can't do in a long list of critics about how we got
here critics of the president when he was doing locked and loaded and fire and
fury and severe consequences and don't you dare a lot of people were worried
that he was leading us to the war instead again we don't know the end
result but up to now the president's approach has worked the question is to
Michael's point does he go into the summit meeting with a clear set of goals
and a clear test how do you get what what is the test for Kim Jong moon about
thank you for the three Americans are you ready to give up your news that's a
central question here and the president is so hungry for a deal here there are
some in the administration and others who are supportive of this generally if
you know he's going to be so anxious for this it's going to derail it in some
respect but the question here is what is the u.s. willing to a concede or give up
here and how will they ever verify any type of dismantling of the program so so
many questions now as we have that summit which again most of us didn't
think would happen now it looks like it will happen probably just in three weeks
or so but boy this is the very beginning of this certainly not the end yeah and
talk about the beginning I mean the process would take months and months and
months if not years I mean going in there verifying what's there if he
agrees to giving this stuff up how do you dismantle it what do you do with it
how do you dispose of it so it is I mean the president clearly wants sort of the
pictures of this right I sort of the programming part of it and it will be
amazing if this thing happens not to see him standing there with the North Korean
leader a propaganda victory for the North Korean leader but also a victory
for this president who is so much about the big win the big victory the big
television sort of presentation of it and no one thought this would happen
really in many ways even after he said it would happen there was a lot of
skepticism about it and so the fact that this is happening now is pretty
extraordinary and a credit to what they've done and to that point and this
is something to celebrate again whatever your politics three Americans who were
in prison in North Korea 24 hours ago or on their way home to the United States
and the president's say 2:00 a.m. he's planning to go out to Joint Base Andrews
I think apparently they're gonna stop on the way home and these Americans have
the right if they want once they're on US soil to
go with their own way but by all indications by all indications the White
House expects them to come here the United States the the remarkable moment
is that you have this amazing potential diplomacy and deploy Russians have
potential to see there's diplomacy in North Korea
because of the relationship secretary Pompeo has developed with the North
Koreans and today I'm free these Americans they're willing to sit down to
a summit they have not taken provocative steps in weeks and weeks and weeks
diplomacy working president walking away from the Iran nuclear agreement just 24
hours ago and you see in the from the european leaders in the european
headlines sort of this outrage that oh my goodness what is the United States
doing here the president again at that same meeting at the Cabinet Room
explaining why he thinks right idea rip up the Iran deal and walk away that was
a one-sided deal that was not good and it was not appropriate and we'll see how
we do with Iran probably we won't do very well with them but that's okay too
they've gotta understand life because I don't think they do understand like it's
a terrible terrible deal that should have never ever been made and we will be
putting on among the strongest sanctions that we've ever put on now the president
promises in this in the campaign whatever your opinion you know you
should not be surprised here the surprise to many was the weight of 15
months that he delayed and delayed and delayed now we're here and what the
critics of the president is saying Hillary Clinton among those treating
this what's plan B and that's a fair whoever asked that question it's a fair
question what do you do now part of that depends on what Iran does now right yeah
and I would say that it's just interesting to see you're seeing two
different president Trump's here when I go to the global policy right he doesn't
know whether he wants to put on the peacemaker hat with North Korea or does
he want to go America first cater to the base as it comes to Iran and it's
interesting because Iran has actually been at the table and then you know
Whitney Iran nuclear deal they've been showing this willingness to move forward
in terms of trying to make peace and and denuclearize etc North Korea has been
way more aggressive in recent years when it comes to nuclear weapons and yet the
president is clearly making a diplomatic effort there and then blowing up the
Iran deal the other part of this that I find is interesting is that what how did
North Koreans know that even if there is an agreement that we're going to stay in
it because you know the United States has made commitments the Paris climate
Accords also there on nuclear deal and we're changing our policy already and so
what makes something for at one word he didn't hear saying there's President
Obama and I think the bottom line of all this is he says it's a one-sided deal
it was Obama's deal that he inherited he wants to make his own deal with North
Korea mm-hmm that explains it all right we'll see that we'll continue to watch
that again the president like him or not like the decisions are not driving the
world conversation right up next for us here the Special Counsel investigation
now taking a closer look at the president's personal lawyer and his bank
accounts and some incoming from Russia welcome back Michael Cohen is back in
the news today facing new questions that somehow yes somehow managed to connect
the hush money payment to stormy Daniels with I popping relationships with
Russian oligarchs CNN has exclusively learned the special counsel Robert Louis
team has questioned one of the Ola guards Viktor Vekselberg the
investigation specifically wanted to know about hundreds of thousands of
dollars in payments that his American company affiliate affiliate made to
Cohen after the 2016 election adding to the intrigue Michael avenatti the lawyer
always on TV who represents stormy Daniels avenatti says Cohen used the
same bank account for the Daniels payment for a series of payments after
the election make those payments coming in from that Oleg arseling company of
pharmaceutical giant a Korean aerospace company and AT&T full disclosure AT&T of
course in the process trying to buy CNN parent company Time Warner a vanetti
says Cohen was peddling access to the president Michael Cohen should not be
selling access to the President of the United States it appears that this may
be your typical pay-to-play type scenario where you have someone
close to a a politician in this case close to the president is highly unusual
selling access potential access to the President of the United States I don't
believe that Michael Cohen is registered as a lobbyist I don't believe that he's
registered as he should be in order to represent any foreign agents or foreign
interest I mean this this is a big deal now we should know for the record cNN
has not independently verified the authenticity of the documents that
everybody released to support his claims there let's try to untangle
this I should say increasingly complex web increasingly increasingly
increasingly seen in crime and justice reports male proko Pez
joins us now shamone help us understand why this matters well it matters for one
reason really John and as we've reported that the mother team has been looking at
foreign influence Russian influence in the campaign and as an aspect of that is
money and was Russian money flown into the campaign was Russian money flowing
into any people who perhaps were associated with the president and the
concern here from what we're told is that victim Beckles Berg of excells Berg
oh who is now been sanctioned for interference into the elections been
sanctioned by the u.s. it's concerned obviously that there is money that may
have been exchanged here that may have been given in some way perhaps for
influence and that is why the FBI and the Special Counsel had taken a look at
it now this company in New York Columbus Nova which is linked to victim
Vekselberg of the CEO of this company is a cousin of victim meckel's Berg they
were seen together at the inauguration at the Trump inauguration so all of
these sort of links these coincidences perhaps have raised some suspicions
among investigators and that's why they started looking out at these connections
and also at the money that ultimately went to Michael Cohen
shamone and one more quick question when Michael eben and he goes on TV and says
he's suspicious because the same bank account was used to pay stormy Daniels
and the payments that started to come into that account where after the
Daniels payment that's his conjecture right we have no we have no evidence of
that right right now it's completely his conjecture look we've we've confirmed
certainly that money went to Michael Cohen
to the same account that he was using to pay stormy Daniels the hush money that
that much we do know we know that he knows the person who paid him this money
we know that they have some kind of business arrangement but we don't have a
lot of our questions have not been answered in terms of what the business
relationship was how do they know each other when do they meet those kinds of
questions that probably investigators are asking and probably already know the
answers to we don't have those it's John you're right about the special
counsels team looking at them Michael and Eddie hopes to get Michael Cohen in
quarters boss you don't appreciate the reporting it is just one of these you
just you start reading these things do you think this can't be real but the
president consistently says no Russian collusion there's no public evidence of
Russian collusion especially involving the president but how about Russian cozy
and how about just plain outright stupidity if you have Michael Cohen the
president's lawyer taking money from a parent company that has a very close
relationship with a Russian oligarch after the election when you know the
president and his whole team are under investigation for Russia connections
the gentleman has subsequently been sanctioned by the United States Treasury
Department for meddling in the United States election
it's forgive me but it raises a lot of questions without a doubt at best it's a
judgment a question but also I think we have to keep in mind the issue of the
sanctions the white house repeatedly slow-walked many sanctions that the
Republicans and Democrats on the hill were supportive of so I think that we
are just at the very tip of all of this of understanding all of this I mean
Michael Cohen did not come inside the White House the president did not hire
him to come inside but boy what were all these corporations paying him for his
company was essential consultants we know we talked to the president all the
time here to me that is the most fascinating part of this I mean he was
obviously doing business as he always did in the shadows as a fixer but the
rules changed once he was elected I don't think Michael Cohen got by and and
the president said he was going to drain the swamp insert laughter here but the
president said he's going to drain the swamp and even if there's nothing about
collusion or elections or this is not connected to the campaign Michael Cohen
$500,000 from Columbus no over $400,000 from Novartis $150,000 from Korea
aerospace 200,000 from our potential future bosses here at CNN AT&T this is
selling access selling influence I know the president therefore pay me money at
which is which is depending on what was done but it's potentially absolutely
above the board and legal it stinks yeah about it's legal yeah I think that's
right there's nothing unusual about this people you know maybe they'll work on a
campaign on and they'll set up a consulting chat because they know people
in the administration and this seems sort of similar to that I mean you throw
Rock in Washington you meet somebody you know who's who's a consultant and that's
just how how it works so it doesn't seem to be even though bad judgment that's
not a crowd party to register for if you're if you're if you're asking the
other end about specific policy if you're just saying you know here's what
the president thinks about pharmaceutical companies or I know the
president hates the 18c Time Warner merger because of this is that that's
ideal question what did the president know about this he does not like his
staffers and people in his world to profit off of him he's been very up he
says that but does he mean that I don't know you mean that Corey lewandowski's
former campaign manager same business these guys are in business they won't
come in some michael cohen was not invited to the White House others some
others who have been haven't come in because it requires how to give up a lot
of change all around Washington DC where again people have these relationships
and companies pay them big dollars because they know somebody on the hill
they know somebody in the White House and again unless it's actually paying
money to get a policy change I mean there's nothing illegal with that and we
see this all the time I mean going back just a couple of years I mean we were
talking about this with Hillary Clinton and people were investigating it on the
hill of course the hill is not investigating
this at least at this point and I definitely wouldn't think they're going
to because Republicans don't want to touch this at all and that to me is the
biggest takeaway from this that is not this didn't happen two weeks ago this
has been going on the Moller investigation has been looking at this
for months and we should be cautious again about Michael avenatti not me of
presenting things that he doesn't have evidence for that's why I think what
what we do know the facts that we do know is that Moeller is still looking
into things that we don't know about the public the press we don't know about and
every person is sort of the Trump or Trump friendly orbit who says Muller has
gone astray he doesn't have anything this this investigation needs to end
were running up against the one-year anniversary of this I think that that
drumbeat is getting louder well we find out as we have every few weeks that
Muller knows a lot more than we do and is looking into a lot more maybe nothing
comes out of it but it's certainly worth investigation as your segment first
pointed out all the connectors oligarch payments to a trusted Trump associate
after the question his cousin here in the United
States making $250,000 in contributions these inauguration for Trump $35,000 to
the Trump victory front $30,000 to the Republican National Committee that's a
good a special counsel to these Russians and Russian tide people or just love
Donald Trump or is there something off the foot here that is the question
quickly I just find it very curious that these Russian oligarchs are even talking
to Muller because they're not gonna do that without Putin's bothers and why
would Putin want them to do this in case of Beckles Berg when his plane plane
landed in the United States they were there waiting for him to make an
appointment all right coming up for us here a big night of primaries across the
country and a big win for the president there's a controversial candidate the
president didn't like came up short in West Virginia after one of those tweets
